The joy of the Lord is your strength.
Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)

We were made for joy. Joy is an emotion of excitement and exuberance when we experience or anticipate something good. We experience joy when good things happen. But joy is also a peaceful assurance, a deep down inner satisfaction that we get from the source of the good. And what greater source of good is there that God? It is the presence of the Lord that brings us to this joyful conclusion. He changes everything. That is why the Bibles says, “In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” That is why the scriptures can command us to be joyful even in our troubles, suffering, affliction, poverty, and persecution. Why? Because the Bible says we will find true joy in God, the Holy Spirit and His people. We find joy in our faith, believing, hoping and giving. That is why Paul could write for us to joyfully bring our requests to Him, to finish our race with joy and to be joyful in all things. Today we have a choice. Troubles will come but when we think of God in all His power and deep love for us, we can return to joy over and over again. When we do, we will find our strength.

Dear Father, I take great joy in knowing who You are and anticipating all that you have for me. Help me find a deep strength as I return to this joy from the painful emotions I experience. In Jesus’ name.
