He Is My King

TODAY’S VERSE
But though I have rescued you from your misery and distress, you have rejected your God today and have said, ‘No, we want a king instead!
I Samuel 10:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How much do we really rely on God? How much do we really commune with Him and depend on Him for wisdom and direction? Think about it. We have pastors, radio preachers, counselors, and bookstores full of books and magazines. That’s not counting conferences, colleges, Bible studies, or Sunday School classes. With all this help, with all this representation of God, why would we ever need God at all? The people of God wanted a King. They wanted a physical representation of God instead of God Himself. Now there is nothing wrong with having Pastors to teach and equip us. Participating in small groups or enjoying Bible Study is a needed thing. The point, however, is this. In all our searching, in all our seeking for answers, for all the comfort we are looking for, let us not forget to seek God Himself.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am so sorry for putting other things above You. You are all my heart needs. I come to You, my Lord and King, and ask that You guide and direct me throughout this day.
AMEN

Power and Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
God is awesome in his sanctuary. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!
Psalm 68:35 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are a lot of things that we need to make it through this life. Sometimes it is hard to ascertain what exactly to ask God for. Today’s verse sets good guidelines to help us when we pray. First, God is awesome. We have every reason to ask for His miraculous power to intervene in our situations. He can heal, change circumstances or move in the hearts of people. We need to ask and expect God to be awesome on behalf of His people. And yet, there is another side. Today’s verse also says that God gives power and strength to His people. Although we can ask God to show His love to others, hasn’t He commanded you and I to be His ambassadors of love? Paul wrote, “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” And who knew this better than David? After all, it was David who picked up the stone and aimed at Goliath, but God directed the stone. David said to Goliath, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” God created you and me to be His ministers in this world, and He gives us the strength and power to do it. What a magnificent plan. God, with His power working with and through us to do His will in this world. No wonder David ended by saying, “Praise be to God!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I can’t live the life You want me to without Your power. Nor do I want to try. I come today and ask You to guide me, direct me, and fill me with Your power and strength. May You show Yourself strong through all I say and do. To You be all the Glory!
AMEN

Love and Good Works

TODAY’S VERSE
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
Hebrews 10:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When you became a Christian, you became a follower of Christ. You became part of a worldwide fellowship of believers. This is more than a fraternity; it is a fellowship. But more than a fellowship, it is a mission. Our mission is to share the message of Christ with the world. It is also to love others and to become involved in doing good. Love and doing good? It sounds too simple and too humanistic. Instead, we want to preach and teach and tell others about the love of God. While teaching and preaching are crucial, we miss the point. It is not an either/or; it is both. God has chosen some to teach, some to preach, but He has chosen us all to love. Why? Because our preaching and teaching will never be accepted by the world if it isn’t backed up with real living proof? And the evidence that Christianity is authentic is in our actions, not our words. So, if we want to see others around us come to know Christ, we must tell them, but we must also love! Today think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me live for you. Help me tell others about your love. But also help me think of ways to motivate others around me to join me in performing acts of love and good works.
AMEN

Amazing Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
I was so foolish and ignorant—I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you. Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.
Psalms 73:22-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How true is the first part of this passage? And yet, as true as the fact that we behave foolishly and ignorant before God, like senseless animals, so is the fact that nothing can separate us from His love. We are still His. Even in our vilest condition we belong to Him and He extends His hand toward us. This is love. This is God’s love. It is so vast, so great that we could never fully comprehend it. It would be easier to explain when the end of eternity is, than to fully understand the love God has for us. Yet Paul asks God to, “give us the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is.” So, even though we are reminded over and over again how foolish we have been, don’t stop there. Also remember that you will always belong to Him and nothing can separate you from His love! He will continue to love you and guide you with His counsel. Praise be to God for His marvelous grace!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, how foolish and ignorant I have been before You. I have sinned over and over again. And yet, Your love for me, your matchless grace, and utter forgiveness has been unbelievable. I thank You for accepting me and continuing to guide and direct my paths.
AMEN

Trust

TODAY’S VERSE
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NTL)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes you just have to trust. You know what it’s like. You are sitting there and “bam” – the sky starts falling. You are caught off guard. Your head starts spinning, and you feel sick to your stomach. Gasping for breath, you start accessing your situation. For some, adrenalin starts to kick in, and you hang on for the ride. For others, you just go numb. Indecision, blocked from thinking, you sit there. You, too, are on a ride, even if it doesn’t feel like you are going anywhere. And that is when you have to trust. You’re thrown into an unwanted journey where you need your faith. It is a desperate time, and you can’t depend on our own understanding. Instead, you must seek His will, and God promises that He will show you which way to go. So today, hang on. God knows your situation. He knows and deeply cares. Come to Him. Quit trying to figure it out and trust. He is there. He will show you the way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I surrender. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know which way to go. I will quit depending on my own understanding and will trust in You with all my heart. I need Your supernatural wisdom and guidance. Please show me which way to go. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

What Controls You?

TODAY’S VERSE
Either way, Christ’s love controls us.
II Corinthians 5:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We would like to think that we are free, that nothing controls us. And yet, it is not a question of whether or not we are controlled. It is what do we let control us? Influences, impulses, beliefs, assumptions, responsibilities, promises, obligations, emotions, addictions, spiritual forces, desires, dreams, aspirations, and a myriad of other things shape our behavior more than we would like to admit. However, we are not helpless. We are not a puppet. James suggests we are “unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.” But today, we have a choice. We can come to Christ. We can choose to let His love guide and control us. We can allow the Holy Spirit to fill us and direct us. Today, let Christ’s deep, deep love for you permeate your thinking and actions and say with Paul, “Christ’s love controls me.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Christ, fill me with Your love. Let it permeate my very being until I am controlled by it.
AMEN

Your Will Be Done

TODAY’S VERSE
He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Matthew 26:39

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Obedience is not the absence of doubt or fear. It is an act of faith and trust. Jesus was a perfect example. He knew that His purpose was to be the sacrifice for the sins of the world. Jesus also knew that His death would be an excruciating, painful ordeal. In His anguish, He came to God His Father and asked if it was possible to let His suffering be put off. But in the next breath, He submitted to His crucifixion with gut-wrenching faith. Against His desire to be free from such terrific agony, He trusted His loving Father. His Father, our Almighty God, almighty in love, in knowledge, and power. Our Lord Jesus modeled the faith and trust that you and I need to live the life God has for us. He prayed, “I want Your will to be done, not mine.” That’s it, isn’t it? That says it all. Faith and obedience come together. Love and trust intersect. What is it you are struggling with? What is it that you cannot understand? What difficulties have you at your wits’ end? Come to God. Follow Christ, and in faith surrender yourself to your loving Father and pray what Jesus prayed, “Not my will Lord, but Your will be done.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, there are so many times that I don’t know what to do. I am so perplexed, so troubled, but today I choose faith. I choose You. I choose to trust Your love and pray that “Your will” be done in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Encouragement

TODAY’S VERSE
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
Hebrews 3:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God made us for fellowship. It is wired into our brains. We need God and other people. Relationships also play a pivotal role in our Christianity. We must attune ourselves to God and to each other. If we don’t, then we isolate. And when we isolate, we start to ruminate on our inner thoughts with no checks or balance. What starts out as hurt can fester into a deep wound if there is no one to encourage us. Anger becomes revenge; sadness becomes despair; temptation becomes sins, all because we had no one to listen, to correct, to pray for us. Fellowship with our Lord and each other is crucial to our everyday life, and it begins with us. We must choose not to isolate. We must choose to be someone else’s encourager. Today, find someone who encourages you and then go and encourage others.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess I have forsaken the encouragement of others. Help me not to isolate. Help me truly fellowship with other believers to be encouraged and then help me encourage others.
AMEN

Have Faith and Trust God

TODAY’S VERSE
For they did not believe God or trust him to care for them.
Psalms 78:22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a fine line between trust and faith. The Children of Israel were in the wilderness, a rugged and barren land. It was a cruel and challenging existence. Even though God had promised to take care of them, they did not believe it. It was hard for them to rely on God to provide for them. It is hard to trust with your mind when your feet are in a precarious place. This is when we need faith. We trust God as we put our faith in Him. Faith believes that God “is” and is able to care for us. That is where the Israelites failed. Like us, instead of faith, they chose murmuring and complaining. They looked around and saw nothing but rocks and hot and barren land. They did not believe God would take care of them. Today, might we consider the reality of God being in our situation. Might we trust Him for a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. Might we taste the Manna and drink the water from the rock. Today, let us rejoice, for He is Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord, our provider.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my complaining. Forgive me when I forget that You love me and are my provider. I lay my needs at Your feet and give You all my trust and faith.
AMEN

Walk Our Talk

TODAY’S VERSE
But all they gave him was lip service; they lied to him with their tongues.
Psalms 78:36 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to give “lip service.” How often do we do it in our relationships? James writes, “Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, ‘Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well’—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?” It is easy to praise God with our lips but dishonor Him with our lives. It is so easy to say, “We love you, Lord” and not do what He says. Today, examine your heart. If needed, repent and know that He will forgive you and give you the grace you need to serve Him with harmony between your lips and your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know that there are so many times that I give you lip service only. I talk the talk but neglect to walk the walk. Forgive me for my hypocrisy. Holy Spirit, help me live as Jesus lived, in Spirit and in truth.
AMEN
