Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
Matthew 6:22-23 (NLT)
I have studied psychology all my life, and I have never heard a more accurate statement than what Jesus said in this passage. How deceived we can become. We look at what we think is reality, and all the time, we are actually looking through filters. Anger, sadness, jealousy, fear, abandonment, hurt, and a hundred other emotions, attitudes, perceptions, and impressions skew our view of what is true. We think we see in the light, and all the time, it is darkness. And Jesus warned us, “If the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!” That is why He gave us the Holy Spirit and His word. The Holy Spirit is our teacher and guide, showing us the way. The word of God is our filter in which to see the world. Together they keep us in the light. Today, come to God. Ask Him to help you see the truth of your own situation. Ask Him to be your guide so that you will know which way to go. May His light penetrate your darkness and set you free.
Father, how I need You. I need Your light to penetrate my darkness. Guide me, lead me, show me the way to go, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
