True Happiness

TODAY’S VERSE
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
Psalms 1:1-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We spend so much of our time looking for happiness. We are searching for that one thing that will solve all our problems and bring us into a constant state of contentment. How many times have we thought, “If I just win the Lotto?”; “If I had a certain job”; “If I just looked different”. Fill in your own blank. We seem to look everywhere for lasting joy and yet it is right in front of us. In the very first chapter of Psalms, David writes about the secret to joy. He says it’s not found in the counsel of the ungodly, but rather real joy comes when we delight in God’s word and meditate on what He says. David Benner, in his book, “The Gift Of Being Yourself” writes, “Everything that is false about us arises from our belief that our deepest happiness will come from living life our way, not God’s way. Although we may say we want to trust God and surrender to his will, deep down we doubt that God is really capable of securing our happiness.” Is that how you feel? What is your reaction when you read, “But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do?” Do you believe God will bless you and give you deep joy by living according to His word or do you doubt that God is really capable of securing your happiness? You can’t believe both. Today, choose to follow God’s word and begin to meditate on it and apply it to your life. As you do, you will find joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your word. I ask that you teach me and guide me through reading and meditating on what Your Holy Word has to say. Help me find happiness, joy and true meaning in You.
AMEN

Listen To God

TODAY’S VERSE
I am the LORD your God. – But you have not listened to me.
Judges 6:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think if God spoke, people would listen and obey. But do we? How many times have we turned our back on what His word says? How many times have we ignored the conviction of the Holy Spirit? How many times have we bent the meaning of the Scriptures into our own will? There are dedication and discipline needed in listening to God. There is a passion tempered with a conviction that results in obeying what we hear. Part of listening is repenting when we know we have ignored Him. Part of listening is remembering the past and trusting Him with the present. However, the most important part of listening is spending time with God. Reading His word, meditating on what it says and communing with God is the best way to keep our hearts ready to hear Him. Might our prayer be like that of Samuel, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for speaking to me so many times. Forgive me for the times I did not listen. Help me to seek Your wisdom. Help me to read Your word and to meditate on it. Most of all, might the prayer of my heart be “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.”
AMEN

Doing His Will

TODAY’S VERSE
Now may the God of peace—may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.
Hebrews 13:20-21 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Isn’t it exciting to know that God is more interested in you doing good than you are? In fact, He is so invested in your success that He has equipped you with everything you need to do what He wants you to do. In fact, the author of Hebrews says that God is going to produce in you, every good thing that is pleasing to Him, through the power of Jesus Christ! No wonder the author could finish this passage by saying, “All glory to Him forever and ever! Amen.” Today you can bring glory to God by living the way He has called you to. Ask Him to help you do His will. Ask Him to provide all the power you will need to do every good thing that pleases Him today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for equipping me with everything I need to do Your will. Thank You for Your power that You make available to me so I can do every good thing that is pleasing to You. Give me the strength to live for You this day. Give me the wisdom to know what to do, the courage to follow through and the faith to trust You with the outcome.
AMEN

Renew Me

TODAY’S VERSE
They tell the seers, “Stop seeing visions!” They tell the prophets, “Don’t tell us what is right. Tell us nice things. Tell us lies. Forget all this gloom. Get off your narrow path. Stop telling us about your Holy One of Israel.”
Isaiah 30:10-11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been at the place where the last thing you want to hear is a word from God? You know, nothing like a “twinge of conscience” to ruin a “good time.” Who needs a sermon that meddles in our affairs? That is what the children of Israel felt like. They wanted to abolish visions and prophetic words from God. Instead, they wanted the prophets to tell them nice lies. They didn’t want gloom and doom. They didn’t want to live in a narrow way. Sadly, we can become this way. It starts slowly, like a frog in boiling water. If we knew the poisonous attitude we were cultivating was going to reach the boiling point we would never allow it to grow, but apathy never starts out that strong. It is subtle. It is an insidious process. We become too busy for Spiritual discipline. We begin to fill our mind with television, the internet, and other distractions. Work and other affairs begin to distance us from church and fellowship with other Christians. Our conscience slowly loses its conviction. We find it easier and easier to ignore that “still small voice.” Let me ask you, “Where are you?” “Do you feel far from God?” If so, who moved? God is always there, His love for you is unconditional. Turn to Him today while there is time. Before your heart gets hardened, tell God how sorry you are. Repent, come back to God and you will find Him. He is ready to forgive you and restore you to a real and relevant fellowship with Himself.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how far I have wandered from You. Forgive me. I desire today to renew my fellowship with You. Restore my heart. I want to hear Your voice. I desire to do Your will. Hear me dear Lord, guide and direct me I pray, in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Seek Him First

TODAY’S VERSE
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33 (NASB)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It’s easy for us to assume what God’s will is instead of asking Him for it. The truth is that God’s ways are not always our ways. Jesus said to seek His kingdom and righteousness before anything else. So if we want to live out God’s will in our life, then we must seek God first. A quarterback has the same goal as his coach. They both want to win the game. But the Coach is better versed in the game. He has more experience and a more comprehensive view of the whole game. If the quarterback is going to do his best, he needs to work in harmony with the coach. How much more should we align our behavior and attitudes with God Almighty? A hurtful situation, a wayward son, a sudden illness, a loss of a job. Life has many twists and turns. When they come, stop and seek God. Let Him know your thoughts, your apprehensions, your fears, and frustrations. Come to Him, seek Him first and He will direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess that I do “my own thing” so many times. I do not take the time to know your will. I just assume that what I am doing is the “right” thing. Forgive me. Help me to stop when I am tempted to run in a certain direction. Help me to seek You first.
AMEN

What Do You Believe About God?

TODAY’S VERSE
And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
What we believe about God makes a difference. Is He an overbearing parent, never pleased with us? Is he our celestial Genie whose purpose is to give us our wishes on command? Is he a senile old man, unable to really comprehend what we are thinking or doing? Is He sadistic, getting pleasure from making our lives miserable? Perhaps a mad scientist that started this experiment but has lost control, not able to influence any desirable outcome? If we are really honest with ourselves, we will see a little bit of our own beliefs in these scenarios. The author of Hebrews says if we want to please God, then we must believe that He is the God of the Bible, not something that we made up. Not some misconceptions that we bring with us from childhood. He is the God who created the world and loves us with a never-ending love. He is the God that rewards those that earnestly seek Him. Start to seek Him today. Study the Bible, pray, meditate on His goodness. He is the God who desires to be known.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I confess I do not really know You as I should. I haven’t spent the time it takes. I haven’t shared my real heart with You. I haven’t waited long enough to hear Your voice. Forgive me. Please reveal Yourself to me through Your word and in my prayers. Today I commit myself to know You more.
AMEN

A Solid Foundation

TODAY’S VERSE
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
Matthew 7:24-25

TODAY’S MESSAGE
It matters what you build your life on. Both Jesus and Paul agreed you need to build your life on the truth of the Bible. Not just knowing the truth but living the truth. Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them in practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Paul wrote that we should be a “workman that does not need to be ashamed, who correctly handles the word of truth.” If we want our life on the firm ground, then we need to be grounded in His word. We need to read the Bible, study it and then apply it to our life. We need to live what we read. When we do, we will find that life will stand the tests of time.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I want to live my life on solid ground. I want to be able to stand firm when I go through hard times. Help me to read Your word and understand its meaning. Help me to live what You tell me to do. I want to be a workman that does not need to be ashamed, who correctly handles Your word of truth! In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
