Choose The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.
Psalms 56:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How often do we think of light as being life-giving? It is when all there is, is darkness. Without the light, we would be in peril. Without light, how would we avoid pending danger? The trouble comes when we get used to the darkness. We feel that what little light there is, is enough. But how distorted it is. There is no color, no definition, no beauty. Shapes are often obscure, and we can end up hurting ourselves. But the word “light” in today’s verse is only a metaphor. It is walking in the presence of God that the Psalmist is writing about. It is being conscious of God and letting Him lead us in everything we do that guides, sustains, and protects us. His light is life-giving. Today we have a choice. We can choose where we want to walk. Will we walk in the darkness, or will we choose the light?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to live in awareness of Your presence. Help me to walk in your life-giving light.
AMEN

Power and Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
God is awesome in his sanctuary. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!
Psalm 68:35 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are a lot of things that we need to make it through this life. Sometimes it is hard to ascertain what exactly to ask God for. Today’s verse sets good guidelines to help us when we pray. First, God is awesome. We have every reason to ask for His miraculous power to intervene in our situations. He can heal, change circumstances or move in the hearts of people. We need to ask and expect God to be awesome on behalf of His people. And yet, there is another side. Today’s verse also says that God gives power and strength to His people. Although we can ask God to show His love to others, hasn’t He commanded you and I to be His ambassadors of love? Paul wrote, “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” And who knew this better than David? After all, it was David who picked up the stone and aimed at Goliath, but God directed the stone. David said to Goliath, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” God created you and me to be His ministers in this world, and He gives us the strength and power to do it. What a magnificent plan. God, with His power working with and through us to do His will in this world. No wonder David ended by saying, “Praise be to God!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I can’t live the life You want me to without Your power. Nor do I want to try. I come today and ask You to guide me, direct me, and fill me with Your power and strength. May You show Yourself strong through all I say and do. To You be all the Glory!
AMEN

Trust In Him

TODAY’S VERSE
O LORD of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you.
Psalms 84:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who do you trust? Whether or not you have joy depends on it. How many times have we put our trust in those things that did not deliver? Our friends, programs, fortune, our strength, a great plan – how many times have our hopes been smashed because our trust was in the wrong place? Today, God is calling. The Almighty, the Lord of all of Heaven’s Armies, says, “Trust in me. Give me your hope. Have faith in my strength and my unfailing love for you.” And so, we move in closer. Barely one hope left – yet that is enough. A mustard seed of faith is all it takes, and God delivers. His love is sure, His promises are true, our joy is secure. Today, put your trust in Him and return to joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, You proved Your love for me on the Cross. Today, I come and put my trust in You. Increase my faith, breathe hope into the depths of my soul and return me to joy. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.
II Corinthians 13:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It was Paul’s desire that the church in Corinth mature. The church was full of confusion, sin, and strife, but Paul did not give up. Instead, he sent them a letter, and at the end of his writing, he appealed one more time for them to mature. They needed to change their behavior if they were going to be effective in their Christian walk. Paul wanted them to be joyful, and the way he suggested that they do that was to encourage each other. Joy comes from Godly encouraging relationships. Nothing is more important than each of us committing ourselves to encourage others. Nothing works like encouragement in helping us live in harmony and peace. And the result of our harmony and peace is the fellowship of God Himself, the one and true God of love and peace. Today chose maturity by being an encourager and live in harmony and peace with those around you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, help me become more and more mature. Help me be an encourager seeking to live in harmony and peace with everyone I come into contact with. Help me love as You do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Unbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.
Mark 6:51-52 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why is it so hard to believe? What is it about the supernatural that makes us so skeptical? Why is it we can experience a miracle one minute and doubt if God will help us in the next? The disciples had seen Jesus heal countless numbers of people. He just finished feeding thousands of people from a few loafs of bread and fish. And yet, when they were in a battle for their life on the sea, they are shocked that Jesus could (or perhaps would) stop the raging sea. When explaining this mystery Mark simply says that “Their hearts were too hard to take it in.” And therein lays the problem – their hearts, their felt beliefs, their deep-down gut-level feeling that things will be okay were not softened by a relational belief system. Their hearts didn’t know Jesus. They may have seen His power, but they did not see His heart! They weren’t convinced of His love for them. And neither are we. If we were, we would react differently to the storms we encounter. Instead, we too doubt, cower in fear or lash out in anger, all reactions to our confusion over who He is and what He wants to do. The good news is that today we can change that. We can begin to know Jesus better by spending time with Him. As we get to know His heart better, we will find ours start to soften.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me to know You better. I want to know Your heart, motives, and wisdom. Help me trust You in everything that comes my way.
AMEN

Inner Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”
Ephesians 3:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our inward journey significantly affects our outward one. How we live is dependent on how we think and feel. If we live in the truth, if we know that we are loved, if we have the resilience to bounce back from painful emotions, we will find our outward journey one of peace and joy, the abundant life Christ talked about. However, if we allow life with its trauma to sicken our inner life, we will find ourselves living with festering emotional wounds, lies, and dysfunctional behavior. Paul had the cure to an unhealthy inner life. He believed that God, with everything He is, wants to influence everything we are. Therefore, Paul prayed that we would allow the Holy Spirit’s unlimited resources to empower us and give us inner strength. He prayed that we would trust Christ and let Him live at home in our hearts. He prayed that we would let our roots grow deep down into God’s love. If we do these things through prayer, meditation, and reflection, Paul promises that God Himself will keep us Spiritually strong.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please empower me with inner strength through Your Holy Spirit. Please make Your home in my heart and help my roots grow deep down into Your love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Word and Power

TODAY’S VERSE

Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.

Mark 12:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

How clearer can it get? In one sentence, Jesus identified the problem most of us have with our Christian experience. Are we doubting God? Cynical about life?  Lack of faith? Frustration with circumstances? Is sin having reign in our life? It could be that we are guilty of the same problems the Sadducees, the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, had. Jesus said that they did not know the scriptures or the power of God. Understanding the Bible is crucial to our Christian life. Paul wrote to Timothy that “all scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” We also need the power of God in our life. It is His power that gets us through this life. Paul wrote, “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead.” Today, let us set our minds to know both God’s word and His power. Otherwise, as Jesus implied, we will be making a grave mistake.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Dear Father, forgive me for having doubted Your power and have not spent enough time in Your word. Help me increase my faith and put my trust in both Your word and power.

AMEN

Speak To Me

TODAY’S VERSE
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. – Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.
Psalms 119: 11, 18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God has created us in such a marvelous way. He has given us the ability to use sounds and letters combined in ways that a community of people can understand. And not just verbal communication; we use the written language to learn with as well. God created and uses this marvelous, complex language to communicate to us both emotionally and rationally. Paul wrote to Timothy that “all scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Today, use this mighty gift from God and take the time to learn the scriptures. Knowing the Word will help you live the way God wants you to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for the gift of language. Speak to my heart through your word and Holy Spirit. Teach me so that I can live for You.
AMEN

More Than Coping

TODAY’S VERSE
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.
II Thessalonians 2:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So many times, I feel a deep need in my heart. It’s like a tugging or anxiousness. Sometimes it is like a tightness in my neck or shallow breathing. Other times, I give out a deep sigh. If I stop to reflect, I may be able to get in touch with the thoughts and feelings going through my mind. Then, I could apply today’s verse to my situation. But instead of seeking comfort from God, I choose to cope or escape into other things. Isn’t this at the root of lust, cravings, or our drive for success? Isn’t this why we tend to procrastinate, over compensate, or just vegetate? We want comfort. We want to know that we are okay, loved, and will never be abandoned. We want that feeling that all is well and people are happy to be with me. And so we search, seek, and try to find comfort in all the wrong places. But Praise God, Paul gives us hope. He asks God to provide us with what we so desperately need. Receive Paul’s answer for anxiety today. “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.” Today receive His incredible comfort and strength deep into your inner being.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I cannot find real comfort on my own. I cannot find the strength I need in myself or the other substitutes I use. I need You. I need Your comfort and strength. Come, oh Lord, and comfort my soul. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Christ’s Creed

Christ’s Creed

TODAY’S VERSE
But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. – You will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
Luke 6:27-28, 35-36 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are causes, and then there are causes! Jesus, in a straightforward discourse, defines what it means to be Christian. Christ lived and died by this creed. There has never been a greater cause than to follow Jesus in His love for mankind. And yet Jesus explains that it wasn’t His idea. He says if we love our enemies, if we love the unlovely, if we love those that curse us, hurt us and hate us, then we will be living like God the Father does. We are so shallow in our definition of love. We call it fellowship. We create churches where we love one another while the rest of humanity only sees a small portion of our compassion. But Jesus railed against that selfish kind of love. He said, “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them!” If we want to be His follower, if we’re going to be genuinely acting like our Father in Heaven, then we must love others, even those who are our enemies! We must be compassionate toward all people the way He is. Today, let God love the way He desires to love. Let Him love, even the undeserving, with your hands, your feet, and your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, Your ways are not my ways. I need Your Holy Spirit to fill me and pour into me the great love that You have. Help me love the way You do. Help me be compassionate to others the way You have been toward me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
