God’s Power

TODAY’S VERSE
I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.
I Corinthians 2:4-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We like to move toward balance. Homeostasis, a relatively stable state of equilibrium, seems to work in many systems. But sometimes that is not the best move. Balance is good if you want to have normalcy. But many times, if you want to reach worthwhile goals, you have to unbalance a few things. Does the professional athlete balance his or her practice time to other activities? No, they are consumed with their sport and devote many hours to that single pursuit. Soon or later, if you are going to excel at something, you must become a little unbalanced. Paul was trying to share Jesus with people groups that never heard of Christ before. He was starting churches from scratch and he learned that the spiritual life must not be balanced with worldly wisdom. There needs to be a radical dependence on God to do mighty things if you are going to see His Kingdom come. Sure you need to ask for wisdom, but it is spiritual discernment that you should seek. You need to move in faith and hope in the spiritual realm, not logic and theory in the earthly. Today, what are you depending on God’s power for? What big hairy audacious goal are you trusting the Holy Spirit to accomplish in and through you? Paul trusted in the power of God, today do the same.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I must confess that many times conventional wisdom tells me to move in one direction when I know I should trust You for greater things. Lord, I want my life to make a difference. I want to see Your kingdom come as a result of Your Holy Spirit’s guidance in my life. Lead me, use me, I pray.
AMEN

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, it’s not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me, I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can be better at my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship when we should be praying for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then wait to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life-changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You in an honest and open way. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.
AMEN

What Is Your God Like?

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
Psalms 18:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What you believe about God makes a difference. Not in God, but in the way you live. Your comprehension of God has everything to do with your faith and hope in this world. Look at what David believed. He saw God as his rock, fortress, savior, protection, shield, power and safety. How do you think this affected his attitude during a crisis? Time and experience had taught David well. All that he went through only made him stronger and deepened his beliefs about the God who is there. The God who cares. The God who is able. What is God to you? Is He your rock, fortress, and protection? Do you come to Him when the world gets too tough? Is God your power? Can you trust in Him to supply all that you need for each and every day? David felt so and so can we. Today, step out in faith. Ask God to reveal Himself to you and give you a fresh faith like David had. When you do, you will find God to be all that you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please reveal Yourself to me. Help me see what David saw. Help me see You as my rock, fortress, savior, protection, shield, power and safety. Help me step out in faith and trust You today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Light Up My Darkness

TODAY’S VERSE
You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.
Psalms 18:28 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be unpredictable and messy. Every one of us has some drama in their life. We all have a story. We would rather have control over our situation, but so often we are simply left in the dark, wondering what to do. David experienced this. He had his difficulties, but instead of staying in the dark, he turned to God for help. He cried out to God and God became his light. He wrote, “You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.” Today, if things become unclear, if you are bombarded with problems, or if dark clouds start to clutter up your sky, turn to God. He will light your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for being a light in my life. Whenever I have been left in the dark Your light has been right there. Thank You for being a lamp for my path showing me where to go. Guide me today I pray.
AMEN

Grace, Truth, and Time

TODAY’S VERSE
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus came to earth to be our Savior. He came to give us an abundant life. The way He does this is through the very expression of who He is. We see this in today’s passage. Jesus, or as John calls Him, the Word, came from the Father, took on a human form and was full of grace and truth. It is grace that saves us. Grace that sustains us. God’s grace that forgives us. But it is His truth that corrects us, directs us and as Jesus said, “Sets us free.” Dr. Henry Cloud talks about this in his book, “Changes That Heal.” He claims that it is the combination of God’s grace and truth that gives us the balance we need to live an emotionally healthy life. Grace without truth would never lead to true change. Truth without grace would never allow us the space we need to fail and start over. We need both. Dr. Cloud adds one more ingredient. He adds time. How wise. When we take the grace of God to forgive, the truth of God to guide and we add time, true maturity results. Today may we rejoice in God’s wonderful plan for our spiritual growth.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I thank You for Your wonderful amazing grace that loves me unconditionally. Thank You for Your truth that has as its aim, my maturity. And Father, thank You for the time and patience that You have given me in order that I may mature in You.
AMEN

I Am Slipping

TODAY’S VERSE
When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your love, O LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.
Psalms 94:18-19

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever lost your footing? My son Nathan did. I went rock climbing a small rock with my two oldest boys. Nathan was climbing above me. He was almost to the top of our little climb when his foot slipped. I was below on a ledge and as he came sliding down the face, I was able to catch him. We hugged and I helped him back up where he completed the climb. I went with him the whole way. I don’t know who was more scared, Nathan or me. I love my son and did everything I could to stop him from getting hurt. Our feet slip, don’t they? Everyday anxiety, pressure, and the complexities of life assault us and knock us off balance. The good news is that we have a Father waiting to catch us and help us back up the trail.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, when my feet slip, I am so thankful for Your help and support. When I am troubled today, I ask that You would make me conscious of Your presence and bring a deep joy to my soul.
AMEN

Everything We Need For Life and Godliness

TODAY’S VERSE
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him.
II Peter 1:3 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times have we felt inadequate in a situation? If only there was something that could help us? It is easy to feel this way about our spiritual life. How can we live for God? How can we live this Christian life the way He wants us to? By ourselves, we can’t. But the good news is, “He has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” How? Through knowing Him and His promises. What a blessing! Capture the scope of what Peter is saying, he has “given us everything we need for life and Godliness!” Today, spend time and get to know God. Talk to Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. If you will spend time getting to know God, you will find that He does indeed have everything you need for life and godliness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I want to live the life You want me to, but I can’t do it by myself. I need You. I need Your promises. Reveal Yourself to me today and in the days to come, so I can get to know You more and more and live the life You desire for me.
AMEN
