The God Who Is There

TODAY’S VERSE

I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
Psalms 16:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The secret in this verse is David’s awareness. God being near to us is not novel. He is omnipresent. David writes later in the Psalms that there is nowhere that we can go to get away from His presence. No, the novelty here is David’s heartfelt awareness. He knew both in his mind and in his heart that God was with him. God was as close to him as his own breath. And with that presence was a keen awareness of God’s unconditional love. It was David’s driving force. Jehovah was the God of love. He was the God who was there. And He is the same for you. Today, do not be shaken. Instead rejoice in the fact that God is with you. He is right next to you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, how I rejoice that You are with me. You have promised to never leave me or forsake me. I rejoice in Your closeness and humbly thank You for Your presence.Because of Jesus.
AMEN

Let’s Make A Deal

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When it comes to seeking God’s will, we often fall into the role of Monty Hall on the old TV game show, “Let’s Make a Deal.” Larry Crabb in his book The Pressures Off shares how we try to negotiate the Lord’s will. He writes, “You negotiate; you do not worship. You analyze and interpret to gain control over what happens; you do not depend. You seek the “better life” of God’s blessing over the “better hope” of God’s presence.” His advice was, “Seek only the blessing of His presence, and you’ll know what to do.” David says that the secret to God’s will is to trust in Him with all our heart and to seek His will in all we do. When we do, David says that God will show us what to do. Larry Crabb in his book The PAPA Prayer writes, “Know God so well that the deepest desire of His heart actually becomes the deepest desire of ours. That frees us to ask God for what we really want with the confidence that He’ll move heaven and earth to grant our requests, because what we want now matches what He wants.” We don’t need to make a deal with God. We don’t need to try to balance a scale to get our way. We need to know Him. We need to spend time in His presence. As we do, He will direct us, He will guide our path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess, I have sought Your blessings more than I have sought You. I have spent time seeking Your blessing more than Your presence. Lord, I want to know You. I want to seek You with all my heart. Please show me how. Please draw me to Yourself through the power and love of Your Holy Spirit. Dear God, take my life, take my mind, take my will. I want only You. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Get Comfort, Give Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”
II Corinthians 1:3-4

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why is it so important that we do not fall into the trap of thinking that we have to be perfect? Because, there are no perfect people! Instead God expects us to admit our struggles and come to Him for help. And then, we humbly go and help others. In his book Abba’s Child, Brennan Manning shares the insight that Mike Yacinelli, author and co-founder of Youth Specialties, had after he went on a spiritual retreat. Mike writes, “Finally, I accepted my brokenness. I never came to terms with that. I knew I was a sinner. I knew that I continually disappointed God, but I could never accept that part of me. It was a part of me that embarrassed me. I continually felt the need to apologize, to run from my weaknesses, to deny who I was and concentrate on what I should be. I was broken, yes, but I was continually trying never to be broken again – or at least to get to the place where I was very seldom broken. It became clear to me that I had totally misunderstood the Christian faith. I came to see that it was in my brokenness, in my powerlessness, in my weakness that Jesus was made strong. It was in the embracing of my brokenness that I could identify with other’s brokenness.” Might we learn the same lesson that Mike did. Might we cry out to God and be comforted and then invite others to experience the same kind of comfort we received. This is the true Christian experience.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I admit that I have troubles. I bring them to You in exchange for your comfort. Help me in return, not to have false shame, but rather embrace my humanness and Your grace and comfort others in the way You comfort me. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Overflow With Joy

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.”
John 15:11-12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We were meant for joy. Instead we settle for comfort. We look everywhere for it. It is at the root of addictions, greed and many of our emotional issues. We look for comfort because we do not have joy. There’s a difference. God wants us to have more than comfort, He wants us to return to joy from our negative emotions. Jesus said, “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” This begs the question, what was it that Jesus said that would result in such joy? When we look, we see that Jesus told those listening, “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.” It is His love that gives us joy and remaining in His love, even after negative emotions, that returns us to joy. So how do we do this? How do we remain in His love? By following His commandment that He gave us in today’s passage. “Love each other in the same way I have loved you.” It is this simple: our joy will come through loving relationships, both with God and those He brings into our life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, fill me with Your joy. The joy that comes through the deep and loving relationships I can have with You and those that You bring into my life. Help my joy overflow. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Comfort And Hope

TODAY’S VERSE
“LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.”
Psalms 10:17 (NLT)

“Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping.”
Romans 4:18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are times when we feel helpless. But it doesn’t mean we are hopeless. David shared that God can give us hope no matter how helpless we feel. He hears our cries and will bring us comfort. That is why Abraham kept hoping even when there was no reason for hope. Even when circumstances did not make any sense, it was the comfort of hope that allowed Abraham’s faith not to weaken. Paul shared that “Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God.” Why did his faith grow stronger? Because He knew God and “he was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.” How my heart yearns for that kind of faith, that kind of trust, that kind of hope. Today, may we know God like David. May we believe God like Abraham. May our faith grow stronger. Today, let us keep hoping.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know You better. Increase my faith. Help me to trust in You and be comforted and full of hope. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Bring It To God

TODAY’S VERSE
“After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD.  And Hezekiah prayed.”
II Kings 19:14-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When you get bad news, what do you do? King Hezekiah was the King of Judah. The King of Assyria was mounting a campaign against the Jews and God told Hezekiah not to worry, that He would take care of the nation. But with the same ploy that Satan used against Adam and Eve, the King of Assyria’s messenger told King Hezekiah, “Don’t let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you.” Satan’s strategy is to get us to doubt God. God loves you, don’t believe it. God will provide your needs, don’t believe it. God cares, don’t believe it. But I love Hezekiah’s response. After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, “he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD and prayed.” There is no better plan. There is nothing I could ever say that would be better than to take all your burdens, take all your cares, take all of your worries and spread them out before God. Today, find a quiet place and meet with Him. Lay everything out before Him and pray. Talk to Him. Share your pain with Him. Listen to Him; let Him share with you His love and the truth about your situation. Take comfort in this, you are not deceived, you can trust God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You with all my worries and cares. I lay them before You. I trust You, dear Lord. Comfort me. Guide me. Protect me, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Rest For The Weary

TODAY’S VERSE
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to get weary. There are so many demands on your life. You live at such a fast pace, burning the candle at both ends. The result is that you end up tired much of the time. Where do you turn? Where do you turn for relief, comfort, and escape from all the pressure? If not careful, you can find yourself victim to addictions, unhealthy relationships or negative emotions. But Jesus has a better way. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” More than that, Jesus invites you to learn from Him. His teaching is easy, and His burden is light. So today, turn to Jesus. Bring your weary soul to Him. Give Him your circumstances and your emotions. Surrender yourself to His care. He promises that you will find rest for your soul.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my condition. I am weary and in need of renewal. I am so glad that You have invited me to come to You for rest. I know that You are gentle and humble in heart and will give me rest for my soul. So I come to You even now, Jesus. I put my soul into Your capable hands. Help me and heal me even now. I pray this in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
“God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Comfort. How often we long for it. It is one of our greatest needs. Everyday has its challenges. We find our self on an emotional roller coaster constantly in need to regulate our emotions. We try all types of solutions but to no avail. Only real comfort soothes us, consoles our breaking heart, reassuring us that all will be okay. Only comfort supports and encourages us in the face of conflict. Only comfort gives us relief in affliction and lasting consolation to our weary soul. But comfort is only as good as the comforter. It is no comfort when a dying man says, “Try my medicine.” A person who is lost is no comfort to someone else seeking directions. In today’s verse we find that it is God who is our “merciful Father and source of all comfort.” It is God that comforts us all our troubles. It is God and His love for us that returns us to joy. It is knowing Him, in all His majesty, that gives us hope and assurance. It is knowing that we are the objects of His unfailing love that makes Him the source of all our comfort. And with this comfort we in turn can comfort others. Today, come to God. Bring all your burdens to Him. Give Him your emotions and let Him comfort you. He is the source of all comfort.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am in need of Your comfort. Only You can satisfy. Only Your love can bring what my soul needs. Comfort me I pray. In Jesus name.
AMEN

I Will Be With You

TODAY’S VERSE
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
Isaiah 43:2

“And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The difference between Christianity the religion and Christianity the lifestyle is the personal application of Biblical truth. We take His word personally. When God says, “I will be with you,” it is not a religious phrase, it is a reality that brings us comfort, strength and hope. When there was a famine in the land, God told Isaac to stay in the land for “I will be with you”. When Jacob was in danger, God told him to return to his home land and said, “I will be with you”. When God commissioned Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, Moses shared how he felt that he was incompetent. God said to do it anyway because, “I will be with you”. When God asked Joshua to take over for Moses and lead the people into the Promised Land, He told Joshua, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” God asked Gideon to lead His people into battle and Gideon was afraid and asked God, “How can I rescue Israel?” God said, “I will be with you” When Jesus was leaving earth to return to God’s right hand and commissioned the Church to make disciples, He promised, “I will be with you always.”
Life has its trials. God has commissioned you and I to serve Him. The tasks may be difficult. We may face trials, temptations and struggles but take comfort in this, even today, God is with you. He will never, never, never leave you or forsake you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for your ever abiding presence. Thank you for the comfort I find in the fact that You are with me. Today, make me keenly aware that nothing can separate me from You. Help my heart be filled with faith in the reality that You will never leave me or forsake me. In Jesus Name.
AMEN

Heavenly Shepherd

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.”
Psalms 23:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David wrote this famous Psalm from experience. As a young man, he spent his time shepherding a flock of sheep for his father. He knew the value of a shepherd to the flock. He also knew the value of knowing God. David writes that the shepherd provides all that the sheep need. David writes that God, like a shepherd, lets us rest in green meadows, leads us beside peaceful streams, renews our strength, and guides us along right paths. And like a shepherd, even in the darkest times God is right there close by our side, comforting us. With God as our shepherd, David concludes that goodness and unfailing love will pursue us as long as we shall live. I love the concept of the shepherd; it is being a sheep that I struggle with. Perhaps that is because I am not a sheep. I am human, and being so, I struggle surrendering my will to God. But even still, His love cuts through my pride. His love compels me to live for Him. It wins and woos me to surrender myself to His control. I can trust Him. I can lean on Him. I can be my needy self and know that God desires to shepherd me. It brings Him great joy. Today, respond to His love. Let Him be your shepherd.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for all Your care. Thank You for all You provide and do for You. You are my Heavenly shepherd and I gladly live for You.
AMEN
