Being Real

TODAY’S VERSE
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
I John 1:8-9

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why would John write, “If we claim we have no sin”? Who would ever claim that? Who in their right mind would think that they do not sin? The truth is that those of us in the church are close to doing that very thing. We come to a point where we feel we need to live a certain way in order to be a follower of Christ. Now while there is virtue in trying to live a righteous life, we will never be sinless. So there becomes a temptation to try and hide any “sins” that we may have. There seems to be fear of humiliation or a shame that comes with “falling from Grace.” This makes it hard for Christians to be honest and open with each other. Perhaps John’s message today would be something like, “There are no perfect people in the church, so don’t pretend you are without sin. Go ahead and confess to God and each other. Christ is faithful to forgive you.” In order to be real, we need to come to God and confess our sins, admit our needs and get the help we need. It is in sharing our struggles and helping each other that we experience true Christianity. Then we help others in the way we were helped. This is what people are looking for. They will think, “Finally, someone who is real! Someone who knows what I am going through and can help me.” The sooner the community knows that there are no perfect people allowed at church, the sooner they will feel comfortable enough to come. They, too, can experience the same grace, love and forgiveness that we feel.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my situation. You know my shortcomings. Help me keep it real with You. Help me confess my sins so that I might experience Your freedom and forgiveness. And then, Father, help me help others, in the same way You have helped me. Bring revival, Lord, to my church. Help us embrace our shortcomings, confess them one to another and accept Your forgiveness. Might we be a witness of Your grace throughout our community and to all who enter our doors. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Confess To God

TODAY’S VERSE
“When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”
Psalms 32:3-5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David paints an accurate picture of someone who is under the hand of conviction. He wrote about the physical affect that guilt played on his body. But David did not allow it to stay that way. Instead he confessed all his sins to God and experienced what John was talking about in I John 1:8-9, “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” The result of David’s confession was the joy of knowing that all his guilt was gone. How about you? Are you burdened with some nagging issue that you need to talk to God about? Have you been consumed with bitterness, anger, fear or worry and God is saying that you need to repent of it? Is the guilt from being separated from God affecting your thinking, behavior and health? If so, repent. Confess to God and ask Him to cleanse you and set you free. He will forgive you. He will restore your body, mind and soul.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, you know how I can let things build up. Instead of dealing with issues in the way I should, I let them build up until they are sins festering in my soul and body. Show me today where I need to confess. Point out areas in my life that need forgiveness. Help me to live the life of freedom that you desire for me. Help me break free from this bondage of guilt. In Jesus name I pray.
AMEN

Confess

TODAY’S VERSE
“If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.”
Psalm 66:18-19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our heart is key to our relationship with God. Our emotions, motives, beliefs, assumptions, self image, and so much more all interface in our heart. If we are tempted or in denial to our own behavior, it is in our heart. So it stands to reason, if we have sin in our life, we know it in our heart. When there is sin, it is in contrast to God’s purposes; so why would our communication to God even be heard? That is what David is trying to say. God is not interested in our deception, lies or rationalizations. He would rather have our confession, repentance and humility. When we come to Him in this way, there is open communication. Love, joy and peace can be shared because our hearts are in tune with His. Today, protect your heart. Keep your conscious clear, be honest with God in all you do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for all the times I have held sin in my heart. I come to you repentant. Help me keep my conscious clean. Help me to constantly be honest with you and confess all my wrong doing. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Humble Yourself

TODAY’S VERSE
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:5-7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We are complex beings. Behind our behavior are a labyrinth of beliefs, assumptions and attitudes. For example, if we have a need, you would think that we would automatically ask God for help. But instead, we get proud and see our need as a sign of weakness. People ask us “How are you?” and we say, “Fine!” We believe that having a need and asking for help would reduce our self image that we are fighting to protect. The Bible calls this kind of thinking “pride”. Peter writes:  “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” God knows our needs and He delights in our coming to Him. Peter verifies this when he writes, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Today, don’t let pride get in your way. Humble yourself and come to Christ with all your needs and He will care for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my needs. You are God Almighty and have promised that I can cast all my anxieties on You because You genuinely care for me. Thank You, Lord, for Your love. Thank You for Your gracious provision.
AMEN

A Clear Conscience

TODAY’S VERSE
“Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.”
Hebrews 9:14 (NLT)

“Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.”
I Timothy 1:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
If we want to live a joyful Christian life then we need to keep our conscience clear. We have a large propensity toward rationalizing away our attitudes and behavior. We will do anything to keep from feeling guilt over something we have done. We bury any negative emotions and before you know it our conscience has been seared. But the truth is we end up paying a toll for our lack of repentance. Before you know it, we are like the person in today’s passage, our faith becomes shipwrecked. Instead, God made us for grace. Christ is the perfect sacrifice for our sins and His blood shed on Calvary has made it possible to have our conscience clear for all of eternity. All He asks is that we repent, confess our sins to Him and accept His forgiveness and unconditional love. What is it that has alienated you from God or other people? Today, bring it to God. Confess it and ask His forgiveness. Keep your conscience clear.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me keep my conscience clear with You. Convict me of sin and by Your grace, lead me to repentance. Thank You, that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and willing to forgive me of every transgression.
AMEN

Confess

TODAY’S VERSE
“He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”
James 5:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Confession is good for the soul. If done right, it is a tremendous spiritual discipline. As a counselor and Pastor I have heard many “confessions” in the form of remorse, sadness, guilt and fear. As a person struggling with my own “sinful” nature I have had the blessing of sharing with others, those “sins that so easily beset me.” There is something about cleansing our heart that gives life. Of course sharing our sins with Jesus Himself is first and foremost. In I John 1:9 John shares, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Jesus listens with a never ending love and forgives with His matchless grace. And yet, even with His forgiveness in our hearts, there can be that false suspicion that if people knew the truth about us, they would reject us. So instead of admitting any shortcomings we put on a mask of “Christian perfection” so everyone knows that we have reached the mark and are Grade “A”, quality number one! But who put that kind of false standard on us? God? No. This false standard is manmade and evil. We need to be transparent with each other. We need to admit to those who we trust and are mature in the Lord, our struggles, shortcomings and outright sins, so we can receive prayer, understanding and wisdom. This is what it means to bear each others burdens. Today, let go of those “sins” that are eating away at your soul. Find someone you can share it with. Ask for prayer and help. Confess to Christ and Christ will forgive you. Confess to a trusted friend and they will lovingly embrace you and restore you to joyful living.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my sins. I confess them to You. Yet You know my struggles, my fears, the masks that I have put on. Help me confess my struggles to my Christian friends that I might put down this heavy burden of pretence and live in the freedom of forgiveness and fellowship. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Get Rid Of Sin

TODAY’S VERSE
“Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.”
Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

“My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.  He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.”
I John 2:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do we do with our sinfulness? The author of Hebrews said that we should strip it off us, get rid of it like we would a weight tied around our ankle. But how do we that? There are many different ways. We can blame others for our actions. We can deny that what we have done is wrong. We can project those very things we do onto others. We can choose to ignore our behavior or better yet rationalize why we did what we did. There are other options. We can feel shame. We can feel helpless and get deeply depressed. We can give up and say, “It’s no use, that’s the way I am.” We can choose to become bitter and give up. Thank God there is another way. John shared it with us. He says if we sin, we can come to Christ, who will go to God the Father on our behalf. He is the one who can assure us of forgiveness. He is the one who can comfort us. He is the one who can give us the strength to get up and start over. He is the one who can say to our accuser, “Be gone, leave my child alone!” Today, if you have something bothering your conscience, bring it to Jesus. Confess it to Him and them let Him wash it way. Let Him clean your heart and free your soul. Let Him give you a peace and joy that is greater than all of your sins. Hear Him say, “You are forgiven.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for convicting me of sin. Thank you that I can come to You, confess my sin and know that the blood of Your son Jesus totally cleanses me. Thank You for complete forgiveness. Thank You for new direction and giving me a fresh start. Thank You for Your love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
