Today’s Joy

TODAY’S VERSE
Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy;no shadow of shame will darken their faces.
Psalms 34:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
“No shadow of shame will darken their face.” What overshadows you? Unresolved trauma, bitterness, unforgiveness, sense of shame, sorrow, guilt? We are emotional creatures and if we are not careful, our emotions will overshadow us. Instead, God offers us joy. All we need to do is look to Him. But that is easier said than done. We let the mistakes, troubles and traumas of the past cast a dark ominus shadow over all we do and are. Or we spend our time fretting about the future. We get so busy worrying and planning that we don’t see the darkness that it leaves us in. Instead, God wants to live in His radiant light. He wants us to live each day to its fullest. He has joy for us if we will trust Him for it. Today, let us come to Him. Give Him this day. Take all your bitterness, regret, and trauma from the past and the worries, fears, apprehensions of the future and trade them for the the joy and love God has for you today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, how I need Your joy today. Forgive me for letting the past cast such a shadow on me. Forgive me for letting the worries of the future keep me from enjoying Your presence today. I come to You now and ask that You would take this day and lead me, guide me and fill me with the reality of Your love and joy.
AMEN

TODAY’S AFFIRMATION & MEDITATION
I choose to live in the now
Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. As you do, focus on this day. As your mind begins to fill with thoughts, stop and focus again, but this time on this very moment. Become conscious of this very moment. Hear your breath, feel your heart beat, hear the noise around you. Pray, Lord make me conscious of Your presence. Sense God here with you, right now. Pray again, “Lord, help me live today with full awareness that You are with me and today I will live in the radiance of present joy.

Doubt and Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then the chief of staff stood and shouted in Hebrew to the people on the wall, ‘Listen to this message from the great king of Assyria! This is what the king says: Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue you. Don’t let him fool you into trusting in the LORD by saying, ‘The LORD will surely rescue us. This city will never fall into the hands of the Assyrian king!’’’
Isaiah 36:13-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you been confronted by doubt and fear? It happens. And it’s usually not quiet. Just like the chief of staff in today’s passage, doubt and fear shouts out his message of pending doom. Isn’t that usually how it goes? Our faith whispers “trust God” and our doubt and fear shouts “Don’t be fooled!” Don’t be deceived.” challenging our faith in God’s integrity, power or desire. However, Hezekiah knew what to do. The Bible says, after Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD and prayed. Part of what he prayed was this, “It is true, LORD, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all these nations. And they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them. But, of course, the Assyrians could destroy them! They were not gods at all—only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands. Now, O LORD our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” Today, be like Hezekiah and don’t give up. Don’t give in. Instead, quiet your heart, commit your worries to God and trust in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You that You are the one true God. Your word is true, Your power is almighty and Your love toward me is boundless. Forgive me for doubt and worry. Today I recommit myself to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Return

TODAY’S VERSE
“But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.”
Psalms 42:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If nothing else, we are full of emotions. You can’t get away from them. But the goal is not to evade emotions rather we need to regulate them. That is letting God, in all His power, grace and love, return us to a deep joy and peace. Psalms 42 exemplifies this. Throughout the Psalm the author shares deep emotional angst. But each time the Psalmist turns to God. “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad?” the author asks. But then the author writes, “I will put my hope in God!” Again, “Now I am deeply discouraged,” followed with a resounding, “but I will remember you.”  Every day seemed to bring its emotional test but the author is quick to note, “Each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.” Today, life will have its emotional challenges but don’t stop there. You have a choice. Give your heart to God. Talk to Him, share your story with Him and let His love for you, His concern, His opinion of you, return you to joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my emotions. You know my ups and downs. You know my hurts, my fraility, my insecurities. So I come to You. I come and ask You to speak to me, comfort me, share with me the truth of Your deep love and care You have for me. And then, in Your tender mercy, return me to joy. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Lord, I Am Coming

TODAY’S VERSE
“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘LORD, I am coming.”’
Psalms 27:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are a lot of voices calling out for the attention of our heart. Depending how deep you are thinking, you can have a new thought every two to ten seconds. That’s anywhere from ten thousand to fifty thousand thoughts a day. How many of these are cries of the heart? How many come from emotional pain? How many are the result of unsolved spiritual issues? How we ruminate over and over again, struggling to find peace and joy. And yet if we listen, if we stop, quiet ourselves, we will hear it. We will hear the voice of God crying out to us. David heard it. He wrote, “My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’” How God wants your heart. How He desires to fellowship with you. And yet we resist. We have so many important things to tend to. Yet God is calling, “Come and talk with me.” David’s heart heard the voice of God and David said, “Lord, I am coming.” What does your heart say? Today, come to God. Come and talk with Him. Come and listen. Come and fellowship. God is calling you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I come and quiet myself before You. I need You so badly and yet I don’t know where to start. Teach me. Show me how to know You. Help me talk to You. Lord, hear the silent cries of my heart. Hear my inner thoughts. I come to You now, in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Christ’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Christ’s love controls us.”
II Corinthians 5:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can let a lot of things control us. Fear, anger, lust, greed, pride are just a few emotions vying for the control of our heart. Negative emotions are powerful motivators. Regulating them is a full time job. But Paul knew the secret to returning to joy from negative emotions. He let the love of God fill his thoughts. He called upon the love of Christ for mercy and grace. Surrendering to Christ brought him peace and hope. This love of Christ is able to the same for you. Today, you can choose what will control you. Choose Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Christ, pour out Your love upon me. Fill me, guide me, direct me. Make me so conscious of Your love that I am under its control. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Lay Your Burden Down

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”’
Matthew 11:28

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some days are harder than others. There are so many things that can get us down. Long hours at work, difficult relationships, financial difficulties, medical conditions, emotional stress and family responsibilities are just a few of the pressures that can weigh on us.
Jesus knew the human condition. All around Him He witnessed human suffering. He worked tirelessly to help those that were sick and oppressed. More importantly, He left behind a system to replace His efforts and to expand His influence. He gave us the Church, sent the Holy Spirit and took His rightful place at the right hand of the Father. The church works on His behalf to help and heal us, the Holy Spirit indwells us in order to guide and comfort us and Jesus Himself intercedes for us with the Father. So when Jesus said “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest,” He meant it. What burden do you have? What is weighing you down? Bring it to Jesus. He will comfort you, He will guide you, He will give you rest.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I bring to you my burdens. You know my situation. I cannot make it without you. Comfort my heart today. Guide me. Give me strength. Help me carry on. I give you my burdens; please give me Your rest.
AMEN

Help Others

TODAY’S VERSE
“Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So much of the sin in our life is due to our emotions. We get upset, worried, stressed and the emotional pain starts to build up. Instead of regulating our emotion and return to a more joyful or peaceful state of  mind, we let our anger, rage, depression, or sadness take over our behavior. This leads us to sin. The solution is found in our relationship with God and other close friends. It is the love, support and comfort that is able to tame our sinful behavior. It is in these deep relationships that we learn how to return to joy. Paul says that we should gently and humbly help a person return to sanity and stop their negative behavior. How? By sharing their burdens and pain. In using a kind word, a listening ear and a prayerful heart, your sincere help will keep a person from acting out on their negative emotions. Your empathy and love will help keep them from committing deep relational sins. Today ask God to help you share in someone else’s burden and restore them to a place of peace and joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me be there for other people. Help me share their burdens and gently bring them back to You. Thank You for Your grace and mercy extended to me. Help me do the same to others. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
“God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Comfort. How often we long for it. It is one of our greatest needs. Everyday has its challenges. We find our self on an emotional roller coaster constantly in need to regulate our emotions. We try all types of solutions but to no avail. Only real comfort soothes us, consoles our breaking heart, reassuring us that all will be okay. Only comfort supports and encourages us in the face of conflict. Only comfort gives us relief in affliction and lasting consolation to our weary soul. But comfort is only as good as the comforter. It is no comfort when a dying man says, “Try my medicine.” A person who is lost is no comfort to someone else seeking directions. In today’s verse we find that it is God who is our “merciful Father and source of all comfort.” It is God that comforts us all our troubles. It is God and His love for us that returns us to joy. It is knowing Him, in all His majesty, that gives us hope and assurance. It is knowing that we are the objects of His unfailing love that makes Him the source of all our comfort. And with this comfort we in turn can comfort others. Today, come to God. Bring all your burdens to Him. Give Him your emotions and let Him comfort you. He is the source of all comfort.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am in need of Your comfort. Only You can satisfy. Only Your love can bring what my soul needs. Comfort me I pray. In Jesus name.
AMEN

Grumbling

TODAY’S VERSE
“And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.”
I Corinthians 10:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be hard. Not everything works out the way we plan. That is why God created us with the capacity for resilience. By faith, we can return to joy from negative emotions. But returning to joy is a choice. Sadly, instead of joy, many times we choose to grumble. Grumbling is different than simple negative emotions. Sadness, disappointment, even anger can be natural reactions to difficult situations, and with time spent in reflection, we can find our way back to joy. But grumbling is different. Grumbling, unchecked, becomes a bitter root that destroys faith, hope and joy. It grows and festers, blaming, attacking and rebelling against any and everything that would be cause for its pain. Grumbling eventually attacks the very sovereignty of God Himself. It is an offense to Him. So today, let us check ourselves. Are we letting anger and frustration get the best of us? Are we blaming and complaining? Is it possible that we are spending more and more time grumbling? If so, let us heed the warning of Paul and stop. Let’s not let grumbling get the best of us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for complaining. Forgive me for my critical spirit. I have let these lead me into grumbling against You. I am wrong for lifting my voice against You and ask Your forgiveness. Instead, Father, help me return to joy.
AMEN

He Is There

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:12-13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been lost? Imagine if you were hiking and all of a sudden you realize you don’t know where you are? You have no map or compass and don’t know how to get to where you want to go. What a helpless feeling. So picture your joy when someone sees you and asks if they can help you. They take out a map, show you where you are and show you the way to your destination. What a relief. That is how it is when we get emotionally lost. We are running from day to day. We over-react, panic and without help, we eventually become emotionally frozen. How great then is our joy when we hear the words of our Lord, “You will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” We don’t have to wander in our emotional wilderness. We don’t have to remain lost in all our madness, God is here. He will listen, He will show us the way, day by day. He promises that we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart. Today, cry out to God, seek Him, He is there.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come today, crying out for You. I am seeking You, Lord, with all my heart. Hear my prayer, make Your presence known to me as You have promised. Guide me, lead me, comfort me with Your Holy Spirit I pray.
AMEN
