Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.
I john 4:18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Not all fear is equal. There is legitimate fear and false fear. God wants to free us from both. With true fear we need to lean on His love and power. With false fear we need to lean on the truth. False fear is the anxiety and panic we feel over something that in reality should not trouble us. It is built on a lie. For example, fear of abandonment, rejection and failure are often the result of feeling unlovable and broken. These are lies. The truth is that we are loveable and are not damaged goods. We may stop from trying something new because we fear failure. Why? Because we believe is we fail we will be rejected or abandoned. Indeed, someone with conditional love may reject us but that does not mean we are unlovable. It does not negate God’s unfailing love for us. God’s love trumps those that would reject us based on performance. Their rejection is not the final word! God’s is. That is what John meant when he wrote. “Perfect love expels all fear.” Today consider how much of what you do is motivated by fear. Consider the lies you believe, the false consequences that push you into panic and bring them all to the Cross of Calvary. Let God’s perfect love expel all your fears and especially your false fears.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me with fear. I need your wisdom to know the truth and not believe lies that send me into panic. More than wisdom, I need to know Your perfect love. Help me live in that love without fear. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Fear Not

TODAY’S VERSE
But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!”
Mark 7:50 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus told the Disciples to take their boat to the other side of the Lake. While they were on their way a large storm came down upon them. They were afraid enough by the storm, but then they thought they saw a ghost when Jesus came walking on the water to their boat around 3:00 am! They were terrified. Jesus, seeing their fear doesn’t rebuke them but rather says to them, “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” He would say the same to you. What storm of life has you shaking in the back of the boat? What is keeping you up at three in the morning? Today, hear Jesus say to you, “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, You know those things that frighten me. Help me take courage today knowing that you are with me.
AMEN

Unbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.”
Mark 6:51-52 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why is it so hard to believe? What is it about the supernatural that makes us so skeptical? Why is it we can experience a miracle one minute and doubt if God will help us in the next? The disciples had seen Jesus heal countless numbers of people. He just finished feeding thousands of people from a few loafs of bread and fish. And yet when they were in a battle for their life on the sea, they are shocked that Jesus could (or perhaps would) stop the raging sea. When explaining this mystery Mark simply says that “Their hearts were too hard to take it in.” And therein lies the problem . . . their hearts, their felt beliefs, their deep down gut level feeling that things are okay, were not softened by a relational belief system. Their hearts didn’t really know Jesus. They may have seen His power, but they did not see His motives. They weren’t convinced of His love for them. And neither are we. If we did, we would react differently to the storms we encounter. Instead we too doubt, cower in fear, or lash out in anger. All symbolic reactions to our confusion over who He is and what He wants to do. We wonder, are we lovable enough? Is He? And so we too don’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. But we can! We can begin to understand, one day at a time, as we get to know Jesus better and better. Today, spend time with Him. Begin to know His heart and we will find ours begin to soften.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me to know You better. I want to trust You more. I want to know Your heart, motives and wisdom. Help me know You more, love You more and then trust You in everything that comes my way.
AMEN

Be Like Elijah

TODAY’S VERSE
“Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”
James 5:17-18
Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.”
I Kings 19:3-4

TODAY’S COMMENT
I love the way James starts his example of Elijah and his miraculous prayer life. He says, “Elijah was a man just like us.” No wonder we feel pressure to be a super saint. You know, go to church with the halo just right and “S” on our chest. But that was not the point James was trying to make. James was really saying, “There are no perfect people needed to get God’s work done!” I am sure that the image of Elijah that James had in his mind wasn’t just the praying for rain to stop and start again; not just the fire coming from heaven to consume the altar; not just the flour and oil continuing to be supplied to the widow and her son; nor was it just the image of Elijah asking God to raise the widow’s son from the dead. I am sure that James also remembered the fact that Elijah was afraid of Jezebel’s threat to kill him and he ran, fleeing for his life. He knew that Elijah became exhausted and sat down under a tree and prayed that he would die. James knew that Elijah was a person just like you and I. Elijah had emotions that could lead to despair. He had depression, doubt, and fear. Like us Elijah exercised doubt and faith; fear and courage, advance and defeat.  But James also saw God work through Elijah’s life and prayers. God used Elijah even with his imperfections. God can do the same for you and I. We do not have to be perfect. We do not have to pretend to be something we are not. We can be like Elijah, real with God about our deepest feelings and fears. God will meet us where we are and give us strength to live for Him. Be real with God today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for the example of Elijah. What a wonderful testimony of Your grace. How You took this person who could be so courageous one moment and so afraid the next and used him for Your glory. Father, use my life. I give it to You in all its complexity and contradictions. Thank You that I do not have to be perfect, just available. Use me for Your glory, I pray. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Calm The Inner Sea

TODAY’S VERSE
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’”
Mark 4:39-41

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”
John 14:27

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I have never been on a stormy sea. I can only imagine how fierce the storm must have been. Here are seasoned fishermen and they were exceedingly afraid. Now it did not help that they were going across the lake. The deep part of the lake in the center regions was referred to as the “abyss.” Many frightening fishermen stories were based on journeying into the abyss. Add to that the fact that they left in the evening. It was dark! Finally, they were going to the “other side”. Everyone knew what the “other side” was. It was where that horrific demon processed person lived in the caves. Jesus knew where they were going and fell asleep on the back of the boat. The storm was fast, furious and fierce and they cried out to Jesus. What they saw happen next was shocking to them, and they had seen healing miracles! Jesus stood and commanded the sea to be still! And it did. Now I don’t know about storms on the sea, but I know about storms inside the “sea” of my mind. There is an abyss, there is an “other side” that frightens all of us. Dread, fear, worry, remorse, addictions, obsessive thinking; it seems that our ship is going to sink. When you feel all is lost, do what the disciples did — cry out to Jesus. Name your fear, tell Him exactly what it is that you dread; be specific with your doubts. This same Jesus that said to the sea “Be still” says to you, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, You calmed the sea; please calm my troubled heart with the peace only You can give. I take the horrific storms of my life and submit them to Your command. You say “peace be still” so I choose not to be troubled or afraid. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Doubt and Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then the chief of staff stood and shouted in Hebrew to the people on the wall, ‘Listen to this message from the great king of Assyria! This is what the king says: Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue you. Don’t let him fool you into trusting in the LORD by saying, ‘The LORD will surely rescue us. This city will never fall into the hands of the Assyrian king!’’’
Isaiah 36:13-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you been confronted by doubt and fear? It happens. And it’s usually not quiet. Just like the chief of staff in today’s passage, doubt and fear shouts out his message of pending doom. Isn’t that usually how it goes? Our faith whispers “trust God” and our doubt and fear shouts “Don’t be fooled!” Don’t be deceived.” challenging our faith in God’s integrity, power or desire. However, Hezekiah knew what to do. The Bible says, after Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD and prayed. Part of what he prayed was this, “It is true, LORD, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all these nations. And they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them. But, of course, the Assyrians could destroy them! They were not gods at all—only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands. Now, O LORD our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” Today, be like Hezekiah and don’t give up. Don’t give in. Instead, quiet your heart, commit your worries to God and trust in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You that You are the one true God. Your word is true, Your power is almighty and Your love toward me is boundless. Forgive me for doubt and worry. Today I recommit myself to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Today You Can Rejoice

TODAY’S VERSE
“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24

TODAY’S THOUGHT
“Happiness is a choice.” This was a title of a book that helped change my life. For me the “aha” came when I realized that my worry, fear, and sadness was a habit. I knew that a habit could be broken and a new habit could take its place. So it was very exciting to consider that happiness could be a habit, too. To help me start the day with the habit of “happiness,” I would get up and quote today’s verse out loud: “This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” That simple habit would allow me to focus and begin a string of thoughts that would lead to a more joyful outlook on life. It would allow me to energize faith before negative and pessimistic thinking could take root in my morning. How about you? Is happiness the choice that you have made today? If not, it is not too late. Happiness, joy, peace and faith can be yours today. God has provided it, you need to choose it. This is the day the LORD has made; go ahead, rejoice and be glad in it.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I choose happiness, joy and faith. Thank You that this is a day that You have made; please help me to rejoice today and be glad in it. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Christ’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Christ’s love controls us.”
II Corinthians 5:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can let a lot of things control us. Fear, anger, lust, greed, pride are just a few emotions vying for the control of our heart. Negative emotions are powerful motivators. Regulating them is a full time job. But Paul knew the secret to returning to joy from negative emotions. He let the love of God fill his thoughts. He called upon the love of Christ for mercy and grace. Surrendering to Christ brought him peace and hope. This love of Christ is able to the same for you. Today, you can choose what will control you. Choose Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Christ, pour out Your love upon me. Fill me, guide me, direct me. Make me so conscious of Your love that I am under its control. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Heal My Inner Self

TODAY’S VERSE
“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.”
Psalms 27:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We live in a fallen world and many of us suffer from early childhood trauma that has left us emotionally immature. It seems that we are constantly using negative ways to regulate our emotions. But we don’t have to be victims of our past. In His wisdom and grace, God has provided us with the ability to overcome childhood attachment issues through new adult relationships with Him. God designed us with the ability to bond with Him; whether it is in the moment of abandonment or decades later, when memories rise to the surface, He is able to hold us close and heal our broken hearts. Today, we don’t need to suffer from a painful past. We have the presence of the Holy Spirit, the forgiveness of Christ and the love of God the Father. As we spend time with God and develop a deep relationship, we will find ourself creating a new and liberating bond with God. This healing relationship with the Father will renew our mind and heal the negative memories that lead us to despair. Today, come to God. Let Him hold you. Allow His love to do a deep work in you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your loving commitment to me. Thank You that You have not abandoned me but instead You love me and hold me close to Your heart. Do a deep work in me. Heal me deep in my inner self and give me the joy and peace that only You can give.
AMEN

He Will Never Forsake You

TODAY’S VERSE

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are many promises in the Bible, but I think the one that is most precious to me is when He promises that He will never leave me or forsake me. It boggles my mind to think that God promises such a thing to me. I know that there are universes and solar systems. I know that there are billions of people. And with each person there are multitudes of situations that need God’s attention. And yet, He is God. In His sovereign magnificence He has declared that He will not leave me or forsake me. Never. What comfort. What hope. What joy it brings to my heart. No wonder this same author could conclude, “We can say with confidence, ‘The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear.’” Today, bring whatever struggles you have, whatever fears, whatever guilt, whatever sorrow and lay it before God. Then hear Him say, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your wonderful promise that You will never leave me nor will You forsake me. Thank You for Your faithful love. Thank You for Your grace. Fill my heart with peace and joy, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
