Christ’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Christ’s love controls us.”
II Corinthians 5:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can let a lot of things control us. Fear, anger, lust, greed, pride are just a few emotions vying for the control of our heart. Negative emotions are powerful motivators. Regulating them is a full time job. But Paul knew the secret to returning to joy from negative emotions. He let the love of God fill his thoughts. He called upon the love of Christ for mercy and grace. Surrendering to Christ brought him peace and hope. This love of Christ is able to the same for you. Today, you can choose what will control you. Choose Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Christ, pour out Your love upon me. Fill me, guide me, direct me. Make me so conscious of Your love that I am under its control. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Temptation

TODAY’S VERSE
“Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
Matthew 26:41 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If ever we needed Jesus’ admonition, we need it today. Television, internet, media – all around us are temptations ready to take us out spiritually. Peter said it this way, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” So what do we do? Jesus said that we must live “in” the world, but we are not to be “of” the world. That is why He told us to watch and pray; He didn’t want us to fall into temptations. When He said “watch and pray,” He wasn’t suggesting a casual Christianity. He was biding us to follow Him in a life of vigilant spiritual discipline. Like Jesus, this life must involve devotion, prayer and consecration. It is Jesus’ kind of spirituality that will “deliver us from evil.” But John knew that we would sin, so he gave us another way to overcome temptation. It is through living with a clear conscience. John wrote “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” Today we will fall into temptation. Perhaps to slander, anger, lies, lust, or any number of other behaviors. Let us be alert, keeping our eyes and heart on Jesus. Let us pray, spend time with God and confess when we need to. Praise God, He is faithful, He is forgiving. He will give us all we need to live for Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my needs. You know how I want to live for You, but I can’t do it by myself. I need You and the Holy Spirit to guide me. I need the power of the living Christ to forgive me, cleanse me and empower me to live for You.
AMEN

Self Control

TODAY’S VERSE
“So think clearly and exercise self-control.- Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires.”
I Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to fall prey to our own desires and lusts. I know if I am not careful, I will spend time doing things that are not in my best interest. Peter is encouraging us to live a better way. Now that we know Christ we don’t have to slip back into our old habits. We can count on God to help us with new desires. As we read the scriptures, spend time with God in prayer and keep our conscience clear with Him, He will renew our mind. He will help us “think clearly and exercise self-control”. It is this thinking clearly, this deliberate focused attention on God and His power, His strength, His love for us, that helps us align our thinking with His. It is this deliberate focus and yielding to the indwelling Holy Spirit that helps us exercise the self-control that is crucial to living our lives the way He wants us to. Today, let’s think clearly. Let’s focus on God and His will for our life, then we will exercise our self-control in living this day for Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to think clearly. Help me exercise the self-control that You desire for me. I don’t want to slip back into my old ways. I want to live for You. Help me to this end I pray.
AMEN

Overcoming Lust

TODAY’S VERSE
“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”
Ephesians 4:21-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Everyday we make choices. Some choices however are more subtle than others. For example, the old saying, “Not to decide is to decide already.” Otherwise, if you need to make a choice and you do not say “yes” to it, then you have really chosen against it whether you felt that way or not. It is like that with most of the things that we “lust” after. Lusting implies that we are desiring something that we cannot (or should not) have at that moment. The trouble, however, is not in the one time choice to lust. Very few of us struggle with that. It is the rebound effect that gets us in trouble. You know, get close to something you know is wrong, withdrawal and then rebound getting closer the next time. As time moves on we find ourself finally in the grips of the thing we were trying not to lust after. How much better to choose ahead of time not to trifle with those habits, thoughts and behaviors that lead to trouble. We do this by asking the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts and attitudes. Then God can help us discern what temps us and determine ahead of time to set our limits and boundaries. Today, let us give our various temptations over to God and ask Him to help us overcome them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, You know that I struggle with lust and need Your help. Renew my thoughts and attitudes so I can live the way you want me to. Help me continue to say “no” and put away those things that war against me.
AMEN
