Loving Others

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then Jesus asked them, ‘Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?’ But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.”
Mark 3:4-5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How did the church ever become a country club? When did we decide it was a place to simply “Grow in the Lord” and not be a vibrant, loving witness for those outside our front doors? When did we give up the mission work to the “missionaries” and decide not to be the light of the world right in our back yard? Not many things made our Lord angry, but this was one. Don’t stand in the way of Him ministering to someone in need. What is so sad is that the Pharisees could have been a help. With their standing in the community, they could have went out and compelled people to come and meet the Messiah. What an impact they could have had on the world, but they were not able to get past their traditional views. Somehow, God loving people different then them, people that did not live the same kind of life as they did, was an offense. They did not see God’s love for the whole world and the mission Jesus was on. Today, let us check our beliefs against the scriptures. Let’s compare our love for people with that of our Lord Jesus. We are His disciples. Let’s follow His words when he shared about the Good Samaritan and told us to, “Go and do likewise.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me love people. Open my eyes, open my heart that I may reach out to others the way You would. Work in and through me I pray.
AMEN

Calling

TODAY’S VERSE
“This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 1:1 (NLT)

“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”
Romans 12:6-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If you were writing to the church in Ephesus how would you introduce your self? “This letter is from me, chosen by the will of God to be – what? This is a question we must all ask but instead we end up asking, “What is my purpose? Why am I on this earth?” These are important questions to ask our self, but have more to do with our vocation, than spiritual calling. Now your career is significant and it certainly a big part of who you are, but here we see Paul talking about a spiritual calling more than he was a vocation. In Romans, Paul writes about the different spiritual gifts and how God has given each of us at least one. How about you? Which of the spiritual gifts helps you define your spiritual calling? Imagine if we started thinking in these terms? Ron called to be merciful for Christ. Susan, chosen by God to be a discerner for God. Mark, called to be a prophet for Jesus. God has called you to serve Him. Today follow the words of Paul to Timothy, “Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for calling me. You have created me and given me spiritual gifts. He me discern what they are and use them for You.
AMEN

See With The Eyes Of Jesus

TODAY’S VERSE
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’”
Matthew 9:36-38 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus saw the crowds and when He did, He was filled with compassion. He healed, taught, loved and cast out demons. Now it is our turn. “Ask”, He said, “the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” He has asked us to go in His name and minister to others. We do this by doing what He did. It says, “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion.” Our commission is to see people with the eyes of Jesus. Dr. David Benner, in his book, “Sacred Companions” writes, “Seeing the other person through the eyes of Christ – this is my prayer as I seek to relate to people I encounter in daily life. For when I see them through the eyes of Christ, I see their worth and dignity. I also see what they can become, not simply what they are. And if I am really willing to see them as God sees them, I see Jesus in them; I see them as imagers of the God who was fully represented in Jesus.” When we see what Jesus saw, we too will be moved with compassion. Today, ask Christ to show you what He sees.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, You saw people and were moved with compassion. Help me see people through Your eyes. Help me love with Your love. Minister through me I pray.
AMEN

How Should We Live?

TODAY’S VERSE
“We live in such a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find fault with our ministry. – We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love.”
II Corinthians 6:3, 6 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Christ has commanded us to be His servants in this world. We are representing Him. When people see us they should see Him. Paul knew this. In today’s passage we see that Paul was trying to live in such a way that nobody would be able to discredit the Lord because of his ministry. But how did he do this? He did it by the way he lived. He was able to overcome allegations by his pure lifestyle. He did not participate in the worldly practices that those around him did. This allowed him to have moral authority. His understanding of God, the scriptures, his ministry and the culture also allowed him to be above reproach. Paul was also patient in his suffering. He trusted God and it showed others that they too could trust their heavenly Father. This was perhaps one of his biggest weapon in the fight against being discredited. Paul was kind and this kindness went far in given him favor with the people. Paul’s kindness caused many to consider believing in the God he believed in. Paul also believed deeply in the Holy Spirit and allowed Him to move in the hearts of those that would oppose Him. It was the Holy Spirit that filled Paul with love, joy, peace, patience and all the other attributes that he needed to be effective in his testimony of Christ’s love. Finally it was Paul’s sincere love that enabled him to live among so many different people groups and win people to Christ. Love was the international language that cut through cultural barriers and allowed people to hear Christ’s message of salvation. Today, let us go into the world that God has called us to minister in. Let’s live the same way Paul did and help others to come to a saving knowledge of Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me live like Paul. Help me live in a way that those around me every day would see something in me that would lead them to You.
AMEN

Working With God

TODAY’S VERSE
“Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.”
Psalms 127:1 (NLT)

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
God has created us to work in harmony with Him. We are at our best when we allow God to guide us and be Lord of whatever we do. Paul reminds us that we are a specific created masterpiece created by God for the purpose of doing good works in partnership God Himself. The Psalmist suggests that seeking God’s guidance, blessing and partnership on everything we do is the wise and prudent thing to do. How much of our lives never reach their full potential because we did not let God work with us. The Psalmist reminds us that our best efforts will never be better than what we could do with God’s lead. Today may we seek God’s guidance, wisdom and partnership in all we do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, lead me, guide me, direct me in all I do today. Help me join You in Your work so what I do today will not be in vain, but for Your glory.
AMEN
