I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. II Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
It is easy to get a spirit of fear. Stress, financial difficulties, job uncertainty, relational strife all create havoc in our mind. We worry about criticism from others all the while being berated by our own “inner critic.” It was the same in Paul’s day. The early church was being persecuted. Many people lived hard impoverished life. Christians lived in desperate times so Paul wrote to encourage them. Little did he know that his words would bring comfort to millions upon millions of people for thousands of years. He encourages us by pointing out that fear is not our natural demeanor. Instead God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, had much more in store for us. Instead of fear, God has given us love, power and a sound mind. How great is that! His love brings meaning and purpose worth much more than gold. His power gives us the assurance of His protection and provision. A sound mind is the guarantee of His peace. Today when fear comes to reside in your mind, don’t let it in. Instead let God’s, love, power and sound mind rule in your heart.
Father, today I bring you my fears. I give them to you and take instead Your love, power and the assurance of a sound mind. May it be so Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
