Love, Power and A Sound Mind

TODAY’S VERSE

I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind. II Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

It is easy to get a spirit of fear. Stress, financial difficulties, job uncertainty, relational strife all create havoc in our mind. We worry about criticism from others all the while being berated by our own “inner critic.” It was the same in Paul’s day. The early church was being persecuted. Many people lived hard impoverished life. Christians lived in desperate times so Paul wrote to encourage them. Little did he know that his words would bring comfort to millions upon millions of people for thousands of years. He encourages us by pointing out that fear is not our natural demeanor. Instead God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, had much more in store for us. Instead of fear, God has given us love, power and a sound mind. How great is that!  His love brings meaning and purpose worth much more than gold. His power gives us the assurance of His protection and provision. A sound mind is the guarantee of His peace. Today when fear comes to reside in your mind, don’t let it in. Instead let God’s, love, power and sound mind rule in your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, today I bring you my fears. I give them to you and take instead Your love, power and the assurance of a sound mind. May it be so Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN

Word And Power

TODAY’S VERSE
“Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.”
Mark 12:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How clearer can it get? In one sentence Jesus identified the problem most of us have with our Christian experience. Are we doubting God? Cynical about life?  Lack of faith? Frustration with circumstances? Sin having reign in our life? It could be that we are guilty of the same problems the Sadducees, religious leaders, had. Jesus said that they did not know the scriptures or the power of God. Knowing the Bible is crucial to our Christian life. Paul wrote to Timothy that “all scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” And it is the power of God that we depend on to get us through this life. Again Paul wrote, “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.” Today, let us come to God and begin to know His word. Let us begin to believe in His power. Otherwise, as Jesus implied, we will be making a serious mistake.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for I have doubted Your power and have not spent enough time in Your word. Help me to know You and Your word more. Help me to increase my faith and put my trust in both Your word and power.

The Holy Spirit

TODAY’S VERSE
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. – For the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.”
Romans 8:26-27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Today’s passage puts a whole new meaning to the phrase, “You are never alone.” It goes way beyond telling someone, “God loves you.” It goes straight to our deepest needs. Paul paints a picture of the Holy Spirit coming before God in deep, deep concern, groaning as He intercedes for us, pleading with God Almighty to move in our life according to His will. Stop for a minute. Try to grasp what is going on. Close your eyes and see if you can picture it. The Holy Spirit praying, pleading, groaning on your behalf. What love, what empathy, what compassion. What peace, what comfort, what love. And it changes everything. We are not alone. We don’t have to live as if everything depends on us. We can put all our trust in Him. Today, might we have a deep sense of gratitude and love for the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. Might we be moved with a profound reverence and awe for our Heavenly Father who loves us in such an amazing way. 

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Holy Spirit, how I marvel at Your intercession for me. How humbled I am that You would act with such love for me. How deeply moved I am that You would pray and plead on my behalf. Thank You so much for all You do and are.

Live For Him

TODAY’S VERSE
May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
II Thessalonians 1:11-12

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who are we that the almighty God of the universe would allow us to serve Him? Yet, that is what God has done. He specifically created us to love Him, worship Him and serve Him. But what is so amazing, is that He did not create us like robots and program us to serve Him or beat us down and force us to live for Him. No, He has drawn us toward Him by His grace. Grace, that mixture of His love, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, concern and favor, all rolled into one. It is His grace toward us that encourages our faith and compels us to live for Him. God pours His love into our heart and then empowers us to do whatever our heart desires. What has your faith in God prompted you to do for Him lately? If the answer is vague, it is not too late. God has grace enough to forgive you. He has grace enough to encourage you. He has grace enough to empower you. Come to God today and may your faith prompt you to accomplish good things for Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You Lord for Your grace in my life. I pray that You will prompt me to do great things for You and then give me the power to do them. Father, might You be honored today in the way I live for You.

Object Of His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Look, the highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the LORD your God. Yet the LORD chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you – Therefore, change your hearts and stop being stubborn. For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God.”
Deuteronomy 10:14-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some times we just need to be reminded. We get so busy, so crazy, so wrapped up in our own world we forget; we forget about God. And then in His mercy, He lets us come across a passage like the one today and it calls us back to what is real, back to Him and His love for us. The author reminds us that even though God made all of the universe and everything in it, He choose you and I to be the object of His love. The God of gods, Lord of lords, the Great God, mighty and awesome, chose you and I to be the object of His love. No wonder the author asks us to get serious, change our stubborn hearts and take God’s love seriously. Today, do as the author suggests, “Change your heart and stop being stubborn.” Turn to God, acknowledge Him as Lord of your life and thank Him for all His love, grace and mercy toward you. 

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord God Almighty. I thank You for choosing me to be an object of Your love. Forgive me for taking that for granted. I come to You now and surrender my life to You, for You are the mighty and awesome God, worthy of all my praise and devotion.

But God

TODAY’S VERSE
“We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside. But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us.”
II Corinthians 7:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Two words. Two words that can turn everything around. Two words that make all the difference in the world. Two words, that are available to us at any time. Paul is beside himself so he writes, “We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside.” He paints a bleak picture, with seemingly no hope, and then he writes two words, “but God.” All would have been lost, “but God”. There would have been no hope, “but God”. There is nothing that could be done, “but God”. It was God. The God who encourages those who are discouraged, that encouraged him. And He will do the same for us. Today, let God be the difference. Let God give you all the encouragement you need. Let God be God in your life. 

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, you know all about me. You are the one that makes all the difference in my life. Thank You for being the God of all encouragement. Encourage my heart today.

Awestruck

TODAY’S VERSE
“When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, ‘Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.’ For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.”
Luke 5:8-9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Shocked, amazed, astonished, terrified, stunned, awestruck. When is the last time we reacted to God like that? Certainly He is worthy. It was fishing that brought Peter to this place. He was tired and frustrated because they tried all day and did not catch any fish. Yet Jesus asked Peter to go cast his nets out one more time. Peter was obedient and to his utter surprise God performed a miracle. The nets were completely full and Peter was completely undone. He could do nothing but drop to his knees and cry out before God, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” It’s that way we see the majesty of God, when we see a glimpse of His power, His love, His creativity and His holiness. But we need to be present to see it. Peter had to be in the boat. Had he not gone, he would have missed it. We need to be with Jesus if we are going to be awestruck. He invites us to come and fellowship with Him. We need to spend time talking to Him and listening for His instruction. When we focus on His constant presence throughout the day, He will guide us, He will direct our path. Today, be with Jesus. Worship Him. Listen to Him. And don’t be surprised if He asks you to obey Him by faith. When He does, you just need to obey like Peter and you, too, will end up awestruck at what He does.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your love for me. Thank you for Your power and majesty. Thank You for Your guidance. Help me live for You today and obey all that You ask me to. I want to be awestruck by You.

Strength And Song

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD is my strength and my song; He has given me victory. Songs of joy and victory are sung in the camp of the godly. The strong right arm of the LORD has done glorious things!”
Psalms 118:14-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love the two words, “strength” and “song” together. They go hand in hand; His strength, our song. Here is the Psalmist. He had seen God’s strength move on his behalf resulting in a great victory and his heart bursts out in singing. That’s because sometimes words alone are not enough. Our soul must express itself in melody. And yet, how many times do we fail to respond to God’s strength on our behalf? Remember the ten lepers that Jesus healed? Only one came back to even give thanks. Can you imagine? Forget a victory in battle. Their body, full of putrefying skin, had just been miraculously healed, and nine out of ten did not even say, “Thanks.”  And sadly, Jesus noticed. He asked the one who returned, “Where are the other nine?” Unfortunately, He’s still asking today. Where are we? Where are our praising hearts? Where are the songs of our souls that lift to the heavens in adoration for all that He has done for us? We have no excuse. We have been healed. Today let’s lift our voices in praise for all His strength on our behalf.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, my heart sings in praise and adoration for all You have done for me. You are the Almighty and all loving God who has saved my soul. I thank You and praise Your Holy name.

More

TODAY’S VERSE
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”
Ephesians 3:20 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God is so much more than we believe He is. We barely begin to know anything about His infinite power, wisdom and love. It’s like looking at a pebble and saying we comprehend what Mt. Everest must look like. God’s provisions are so vast that if we were to exhaust all the resources of a multi-billionaire, we would barely be starting with God. So why is it we don’t dream big dreams for God? He has promised that He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine and yet we live a life without the miraculous. The secret is in knowing Him. And even that is a gift. A gift we need to pray for. We need to ask God to help us comprehend who He is and to allow us to dream for Him. He created us to be His ambassador of dreams. He lives through our visions, our hopes and aspirations. He longs for us to challenge Him, to create with Him and to partner in being change agents in this world. Paul put it this way, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” Today, let us ask God to strengthen us with His power and to fill us with His fullness so we will ask Him for the immeasurable, and trust Him to do more that we can ever imagine.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, what immeasurable mighty dreams do You have for my life? What is it that You want me to trust You for? Strengthen me, Lord, with Your power. Fill me with Your fullness. Help me believe You for great things.

Your Cross

TODAY’S VERSE
“Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”’

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t understand suffering. Pain, heartache, sadness seem so antithetical to the love, joy and peace that we claim is the Christian experience. I don’t understand why our first and only stop isn’t Heaven instead of earth. But here we are and in this world we do have tribulation. All of us have crosses to bear. In his book, “Desiring God’s Will”, Dr. Benner writes, “We experience good and bad in our childhood. But Jesus’ invitation is to accept the givens of our life and follow Him. We experience love and betrayal in our marriages and friendships. But Jesus’ invitation remains the same, to accept the givens and follow Him. – We want to either fight against the suffering or ignore it. What Jesus asks is something quite different. – We can choose to acknowledge the suffering rather than ignore it. And while holding it, we can choose to look toward God. If we do, we discover God looking toward us.” The mystery in all of this is God’s grace. Grace stands between us and our pain. It is the salve for our breaking heart. It is the presence of God in the midst of our darkness. It is the strength in our weakness. God promises it will be sufficient. He promises. Today, don’t turn away. Quit running. Lay down your burden and follow Christ. He is sufficient.
   
TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You. Only You can be my strength. Only You can give me the grace I need. I look to You dear God for You promised Your grace will be sufficient.
