Forget The Past

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have not achieved it (perfection), but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
Philippians 3:13-14

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul started the whole “No perfect people allowed” movement! He knew the pressure that Christians were getting from the religious people. Get circumcised, follow the commandments, obey the law. Paul knew that this was a trap. He knew that there were two kinds of people that miss God’s standard of perfection. Those that say they do and those that pretend they don’t. Paul did not have to pretend to be perfect; he had a better way! He forgot his sin. Paul knew his struggle. He knew his shortcomings but instead of putting on the pretence of perfection, he focused on one thing: “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.” How about you? There comes a time when you have to make a choice. Are you going to let the past dictate your life or your future? Follow Paul’s example, “I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, you know my past better than I do and yet You are willing to forgive. Help me to do the same. Help me to forgive and forget the past and focus on what’s ahead. Help me live in the present reality of Your love and forgiveness and then press on toward living my life for You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

First Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
Colossians 2:6-7

“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance… Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.”
Revelation 2:2, 4-5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Remember when you first came to Christ? You were aware of your need. You were humbled by His love, appreciative of His sacrifice for you. You wanted to help everyone else know Him. What happened? How did we allow our intimate relationship with Christ to become a ritual? When did we trade our freedom? When did we forsake our joy? Have we traded our relationship with Christ for a religion? Have we given up grace for rules and regulations? Have we traded the mission of the church for membership in a country club? Paul encouraged the church in Colossians to continue to live in Christ just like they did the first day they tasted of salvation. The first day the Spirit of God was born in their heart, the first time the tears from God’s forgiveness stained their cheeks. John wrote to the church in Ephesus that even though they worked hard and persevered, they lost their first love. He admonished them to repent and do the things that they did at first. Oh, that we would never forget the wonder that God loves us. Or extinguish the joy from knowing that He has chosen us to be His children. Today, examine your heart. Do you feel far from God? Who moved? Go back to the place you met Christ. Rededicate your heart to Him. Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, take me back to the time I first knew You. Renew the joy in my soul. Reignite the fire that burned in my heart. Help me to remember and to live this day in the fresh awareness of Your love and forgiveness.
In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Object Of His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Look, the highest heavens and the earth and everything in it all belong to the LORD your God. Yet the LORD chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you – Therefore, change your hearts and stop being stubborn. For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God.”
Deuteronomy 10:14-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some times we just need to be reminded. We get so busy, so crazy, so wrapped up in our own world we forget; we forget about God. And then in His mercy, He lets us come across a passage like the one today and it calls us back to what is real, back to Him and His love for us. The author reminds us that even though God made all of the universe and everything in it, He choose you and I to be the object of His love. The God of gods, Lord of lords, the Great God, mighty and awesome, chose you and I to be the object of His love. No wonder the author asks us to get serious, change our stubborn hearts and take God’s love seriously. Today, do as the author suggests, “Change your heart and stop being stubborn.” Turn to God, acknowledge Him as Lord of your life and thank Him for all His love, grace and mercy toward you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord God Almighty. I thank You for choosing me to be an object of Your love. Forgive me for taking that for granted. I come to You now and surrender my life to You, for You are the mighty and awesome God, worthy of all my praise and devotion.
AMEN

Confess To God

TODAY’S VERSE
“When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”
Psalms 32:3-5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David paints an accurate picture of someone who is under the hand of conviction. He wrote about the physical affect that guilt played on his body. But David did not allow it to stay that way. Instead he confessed all his sins to God and experienced what John was talking about in I John 1:8-9, “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” The result of David’s confession was the joy of knowing that all his guilt was gone. How about you? Are you burdened with some nagging issue that you need to talk to God about? Have you been consumed with bitterness, anger, fear or worry and God is saying that you need to repent of it? Is the guilt from being separated from God affecting your thinking, behavior and health? If so, repent. Confess to God and ask Him to cleanse you and set you free. He will forgive you. He will restore your body, mind and soul.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, you know how I can let things build up. Instead of dealing with issues in the way I should, I let them build up until they are sins festering in my soul and body. Show me today where I need to confess. Point out areas in my life that need forgiveness. Help me to live the life of freedom that you desire for me. Help me break free from this bondage of guilt. In Jesus name I pray.
AMEN

Hypocrite

TODAY’S VERSE

‘“Jesus replied, ‘You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce.’”
Mark 7:6-7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
According to Webster, a hypocrite is “a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings, puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion.” None of us start out trying to be a hypocrite but so often it end up happening. What starts as a wonderful relationship with Christ somewhere along the way becomes a religion, a system of do’s and don’t. Whereas we found salvation as a free gift from Christ, we start to believe that God would love us more if we behaved certain ways. We slowly go from a relationship of grace to a system of works. We start spending more time knowing about God and less time knowing Him. And then it begins to happen. Our Christianity becomes more about church and less about our life. We know how to “talk” about Jesus but know nothing about “walking” with Him. Jesus said it this way, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” True worship is from the heart and Jesus says that ours has become a farce. It doesn’t have to be this way. Today, be real with God. Come to Him seeking to really know Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you in new and refreshing ways. Accept His love and forgiveness. Accept His grace and fellowship. Today, start afresh and begin to love Him again with all your heart, soul and mind.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me search my heart. Help me to know where I have wandered from You. Forgive me for any hypocrisy and help me to embrace Your love simply living for You in return.
AMEN

Search Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.”
Lamentations 3:40 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
“You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” These famous words were said by Jesus. Although He was referring to the truth of salvation, the larger application is true as well. Truth will set us free. Free from bondage, free from negative thinking, free from poor choices. But truth can be elusive. This is why we must call upon the Lord to help us be honest with ourself. David did this. He asked God to search the deepest parts of his mind and heart and lead him in the truth. Jeremiah in Lamentations encourages us to, “examine our ways and test them.” And God always has our best in mind. His purpose isn’t to fail us, embarrass us or send us back a grade. His desire is to encourage and motivate us, moving us toward maturity. What better way to mature than coming before God, examining our progress and letting Him coach us through the power of His word and the Holy Spirit. This is consistent with God’s will for our life. Jeremiah wrote it this way, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Today, let God examine your heart. Seek His direction and let Him develop the plans He has for your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, search me and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
AMEN
