Love God

TODAY’S VERSE
“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’
Luke 15:17-19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to “love” what we can get from God more than God. It is easier to “love” God when things are going according to our preconceived idea of a “happy life” than it is when things go crazy. In his book The Papa Prayer, Larry Crabb points out that in the story of the Prodigal Son, the son decides to return home, not because of his love for his father but because he wanted what his father could provide. The truth is that the son knew that the hired servants lived better than he was living at the time so he went home to be provided for. It is interesting to note that in the speech the Prodigal Son gave to his father, that he never once told his father that he loved him. What about us? Do we love God or do we really love what He provides? As long as things are great or at least status quo, God is deserving of our love. But what happens when things turn sour, or there is conflict in our life? We are the first to doubt Him. Today, love God. Just love Him. Tell Him so. Love Him because He is! Love Him not to get but just because you want to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today, I just want to love You. I want to love You for who You are. Help me to examine my heart and repent of a consumer mentality that comes to You for what I can get. Forgive me for attaching strings to my love. Holy Spirit, guide me into a deeper love for the Triune God today. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

New Start

TODAY’S VERSE
“Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.”
Romans 6:4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
A new life. What would that be like? A do over. A get out of jail free card. What if you really could begin again? What would change? What would you do different? It seems so impossible, but Christ came to give us a new life. Jesus Himself used the word “born again” when describing those who decide to follow Him. God knew us from the beginning of time and created us for His purposes and though our life may seem like one mistake after another, one wrong turn followed by another, God can change everything. This same power that God used to raise Jesus from the dead, is the power He wants to use in helping you begin to live a new life. Today, come to Him. Surrender your life and ask Him to help you start afresh. He will. He will hear your prayer and give you the new chance you have been looking for. His love for you is boundless. His promise is sure. All God desires is a contrite and humble heart. He promises that He will not reject your plea if you come to Him with a broken and repentant heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need a new start. I ask, dear Lord, that You use that same power that You used to raise Jesus from the dead to help me live a new life. I surrender to You and ask for Your help today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Church Of Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior.”
II Corinthians 12:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What happened? Paul is concerned about the behavior of the church in Corinth. This is the same church that he wrote, “I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people.” But the reality is, even though we are called to be His holy people, we are still a work in progress. There are no perfect people in the church. We sin. But it doesn’t mean we have to continue in sin. Here was a case where Paul was afraid that he would come to Corinth and find the church full of quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorderly behavior. So in his letter, Paul encouraged the people to examine themselves and repent of ungodly behavior. We need to do the same. We need to pray. We need to ask God to cleanse us of relational sin and help us to love one another. We need to ask God to fill our church with His Spirit. We need to call upon our Lord to help our church be an example of the way He lived. Today, pray for your church. Pray that together you would be a witness to your community of His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come and pray for my church. I ask that You would fill us with Your Spirit. I pray that You would help us repent of sin and live the life of love that You have called us to. Help us to love one another and those in our community. Help us be the witness You have called us to be. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Confess

TODAY’S VERSE
“If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer.”
Psalm 66:18-19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our heart is key to our relationship with God. Our emotions, motives, beliefs, assumptions, self image, and so much more all interface in our heart. If we are tempted or in denial to our own behavior, it is in our heart. So it stands to reason, if we have sin in our life, we know it in our heart. When there is sin, it is in contrast to God’s purposes; so why would our communication to God even be heard? That is what David is trying to say. God is not interested in our deception, lies or rationalizations. He would rather have our confession, repentance and humility. When we come to Him in this way, there is open communication. Love, joy and peace can be shared because our hearts are in tune with His. Today, protect your heart. Keep your conscious clear, be honest with God in all you do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for all the times I have held sin in my heart. I come to you repentant. Help me keep my conscious clean. Help me to constantly be honest with you and confess all my wrong doing. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Humble Yourself

TODAY’S VERSE
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:5-7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We are complex beings. Behind our behavior are a labyrinth of beliefs, assumptions and attitudes. For example, if we have a need, you would think that we would automatically ask God for help. But instead, we get proud and see our need as a sign of weakness. People ask us “How are you?” and we say, “Fine!” We believe that having a need and asking for help would reduce our self image that we are fighting to protect. The Bible calls this kind of thinking “pride”. Peter writes:  “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” God knows our needs and He delights in our coming to Him. Peter verifies this when he writes, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Today, don’t let pride get in your way. Humble yourself and come to Christ with all your needs and He will care for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my needs. You are God Almighty and have promised that I can cast all my anxieties on You because You genuinely care for me. Thank You, Lord, for Your love. Thank You for Your gracious provision.
AMEN

Overcoming Lust

TODAY’S VERSE
“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”
Ephesians 4:21-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Everyday we make choices. Some choices however are more subtle than others. For example, the old saying, “Not to decide is to decide already.” Otherwise, if you need to make a choice and you do not say “yes” to it, then you have really chosen against it whether you felt that way or not. It is like that with most of the things that we “lust” after. Lusting implies that we are desiring something that we cannot (or should not) have at that moment. The trouble, however, is not in the one time choice to lust. Very few of us struggle with that. It is the rebound effect that gets us in trouble. You know, get close to something you know is wrong, withdrawal and then rebound getting closer the next time. As time moves on we find ourself finally in the grips of the thing we were trying not to lust after. How much better to choose ahead of time not to trifle with those habits, thoughts and behaviors that lead to trouble. We do this by asking the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts and attitudes. Then God can help us discern what temps us and determine ahead of time to set our limits and boundaries. Today, let us give our various temptations over to God and ask Him to help us overcome them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, You know that I struggle with lust and need Your help. Renew my thoughts and attitudes so I can live the way you want me to. Help me continue to say “no” and put away those things that war against me.
AMEN

Self Awareness

TODAY’S VERSE
“You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.”
Revelation 3:17 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
In his book “Practicing Greatness” Reggie McNeal gives seven disciplines to improve our spirituality. The first one is the discipline of self awareness. This is critical if we are going to live the way Christ asks us to. Why? Because it is so easy to deceive ourselves. Look at the Pharisees. They thought they were doing everything God required of them to be holy and yet Jesus constantly pointed out how far they missed the target of true Holiness. It was that way with the early church. In Revelation John wrote what God told him to write about the churches. When it came to the church in Laodicea, John pointed out that they lacked self awareness. Because they were rich and had many things, they felt they didn’t lack anything. However, God pointed out to them that they were deceived. In reality they were spiritually wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. The good news is that we don’t have to be this way; but unless we are aware of our spiritual condition, we will never take the steps to correct ourselves. So how do we know? How can we find out where we are spiritually? Insight comes when we spend time with God. When we open ourselves to hear His voice, read His word and spend time in introspection. As we humble ourselves before God, spend time with Him and listen to His leading, He will guide us. He will correct us. He will help us discern what we need to change. Today, talk to God. Ask Him to make you aware of your spiritual condition. Might we pray with David when he wrote, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me become more self aware of my true spiritual attitudes. Help me to be honest with myself and with You. Help me see if there is any offensive way in me and then lead me in a more spiritual path. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
