A New Song

TODAY’S VERSE
“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.”
Psalms 40:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever noticed how many sad songs there are? Songs of despair, betrayal or heartbreak? Songs that reflect the needs of our heart. How many songs have been our anthem? How many nights have we gone to bed with a sad song going through our head? And then there was God. God comes and gives us a new song. A song of deliverance, of hope and of joy. That happened to King David. God had given him a new song, a song of praise. And because of David’s song of testimony, many put their trust in God. God wants to do the same today. He wants to use our lives as a testimony of His love and grace so others will put their trust in Him. What has been your song lately? If it has been out of tune, why not ask God for a new song, a song of deliverance, a song of hope and song of joy and peace? Put your trust in God and He will put a new song in your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I need a new melody of hope, joy and peace. I ask You to fill my heart with a song of Your love. Then might others hear my praise and put their trust in You.
AMEN

More Than Caring

TODAY’S VERSE
“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?”
James 2:15-16

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to get wrapped up in our own life that we forget about those all around us who are in need. We can’t save the whole world, so we don’t try to save just one. “Someone else will help”, we think as we walk away. But James says that we have to do more than just “care” about the poor, we need to help. In his book Irresistible Revolution, Shane Claiborne shares about a survey he took of American Christians. He found that 80% believed that Jesus spent time with the poor. When asked if they spent any time with the poor, only 20% of the same group said “yes.” Shane concluded, “We can admire and worship Jesus without doing what He did. We can applaud what he preached and stood for without caring about the same things. We can adore his cross without taking up ours.” James talks about our apathy toward the poor in this way, “But someone will say, ‘You have faith; I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.”  It is not good enough to care about the poor. If we follow Christ, we need to do something.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, there are so many people hurting and in desperate need. It is overwhelming. My heart aches but I don’t know what to do. Please forgive me for my inactivity and help me today find something that I can do. Help me make a difference in someone’s life, even if it is just a small difference. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Help The Needy

TODAY’S VERSE
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him.”
Isaiah 58:6-7

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The children of Israel had forgotten that God had them here on this earth to be His representatives, to show people the way to God. They were to love people and share the importance of knowing Jehovah. Instead, they thought that they had somehow “deserved” the status that they had as the “Children of God.” They began to act as if they were “gods” unto themselves. When God favors us with certain status or vocations, we can easily fall into a trap of thinking that we achieved the status and vocation by our own merits. This leads to pride and arrogance. This is what God pointed out to the Israelites. They were fasting and God was not listening to their pomp and circumstance. Instead, God wanted equality, justice and love among all people. The prophet Isaiah asked, “What is it that God has required of each of us?” He answered with a sobering indictment, “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him.” God wants us to serve others. He has called us to be His representatives of love. Most of us live such a privileged life. Let’s do all we can to give back to those in need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You take the plight of the poor seriously. You hate injustice and love mercy. Help me to love others the way You do. Help me live my true calling, as a productive steward working for the well-being of others in need. Show me today, Lord, how I can make a difference. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Be Still

TODAY’S VERSE

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalms 46:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever noticed how we hate silence? I don’t mean the momentary silence after you walk inside from loud street noise. I mean the “quiet yourself down and think” kind of silence. It is so hard to shut off the inward noise. We are obsessed with busyness. It’s as if we are afraid to face who we really are and where we are in our journey. But we must face our loneliness. Leanne Payne makes this point in her book Listening Prayer. She writes, “Our Pastoral task is to help all needy individuals face their inner loneliness, and there begin to hear God and their own true self. Everyone one of us – not just those who are the most visibly wounded by the darkness in humanity and the world – has to face the inner loneliness and separation from God. We all need to begin the rigorous but sternly magnificent work of converting the ‘desert of loneliness’ within into the spaciously beautiful ‘garden of solitude’ where the true self comes forward and flourishes. This is the self capable of friendship and Christian fellowship.” As we face our life, we need to stop filling in the gaps with empty “busyness.” Instead, we need to consider who we are and all that God is. This will lead us on a beautiful journey of the soul. Why not start today? Throughout this day, stop and listen to your inner self; bring it to God and dialog with Him. May you begin to hear God and embrace your true self in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, so many times during the day You cry out my name, but I am too busy “keeping busy” that I do not hear You. How many times, Lord, You have wanted me to turn to You in my loneliness but I fill the void with noise. Lord, I am sorry. I want to hear You, I want to know You. Help me start today to convert my “desert of loneliness” into a “garden of solitude.” In Jesus’ name. AMEN

The Gift

TODAY’S VERSE
“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another counselor, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.”
John 14:16

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can you imagine someone knocking on your door and giving you a check for a hundred million dollars? Think of all you could do with that. How tragic would it be if you thanked the person, closed the door and put the check on your dresser top and never used it? Never helped anyone, never bettered your own situation. Instead, you live a meager existence, paycheck to paycheck, and die a pauper. We would shake our head and mutter, “What a shame to waste such a resource.” And yet, what must God the Father think of what we have done with the precious gift of His Holy Spirit? Jesus asked the Father to give us a counselor who will never leave us and lead us into all truth, and He has. You and I, when we became a child of God, received His Holy Spirit into our life and yet we barely know this third part of the Trinity. When have we ever asked the Holy Spirit to fill us, guide us or lead us into truth? We have been given Spiritual Gifts but do we know what they are or how they work? How much time have we spent  contemplating how to cultivate the “fruit of the Spirit” in our life? God has indwelled us with the person of the Holy Spirit. Might we seek to understand more about this treasure that God has given us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Forgive me for not knowing more about Him. Forgive me for not living in His power. Oh Holy Spirit, I ask that you would make me conscious of your presence in my life. Teach me, guide me, fill me and lead me into all truth. I give You control of my life and pray that You would produce Your fruit in my life and activate the Spiritual Gifts that You have given me. I pray this in Jesus Name.
AMEN

Wisdom and Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
“Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. –  For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:2-3, 6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a difference wisdom and understanding can make. How many times have we forged on ahead into disaster because we did not seek God for the insight that only He can give. Solomon knew about this more than any man that ever lived. He was asked specifically by God to request anything that he wanted and he asked for wisdom. He knew that with wisdom everything, else in life would come. In today’s passage Solomon shares his secret to life. He writes, “Seek wisdom and understanding”. Specifically, he encourages us to seek God because. “The Lord grants wisdom. From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” And yet it is in our human nature to think that we have all the answers. Why would we ever need to seek God? How foolish. Today, let us be wise, by seeking Him in everything we do. Let’s ask God to grant us wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that You would lead me today. I cannot make it without Your guidance. Give me the wisdom, knowledge and understanding that I so desperately need.
AMEN

God’s Will

TODAY’S VERSE
“May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The disciples came to Jesus and asked Him to show them how to pray. He then prayed what is now known as the “Lord’s Prayer”. In the prayer He says, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”
Notice that He did not say, “God, may my will be done on earth.” So often that is how we pray. We come to God with requests that are more like demands. It is not wrong to ask God for something with confidence. God says that He wants to give us good things. God does answer prayer. Where the problem comes in is when we assume our desire is the will of God. Our confidence should come from knowing God and aligning our desires with His. Not confidence in the fact that we simply want something. In “Desiring God’s Will”, Dr. David Benner writes, “The prayer that comes most naturally for all of us is ‘My name be hallowed, my kingdom come, my will be done.’ This is a prayer of independence and willfulness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of self. The prayer that goes against our nature and that can become our prayer only through the action of divine grace, is the Lord’s prayer. It inverts everything in the liturgy of the kingdom of the self – ‘Thy name be hallowed, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.’ It is a prayer of surrendered autonomy and willingness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of God.” Today, attune your heart with God. Pray for wisdom, discernment and align your request with His will. Then we can pray, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I ask that You would help me discern Your will for my life. Help me align my joys, desires and will with Yours I pray.
AMEN

Calling

TODAY’S VERSE
“This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 1:1 (NLT)

“In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”
Romans 12:6-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If you were writing to the church in Ephesus how would you introduce your self? “This letter is from me, chosen by the will of God to be – what? This is a question we must all ask but instead we end up asking, “What is my purpose? Why am I on this earth?” These are important questions to ask our self, but have more to do with our vocation, than spiritual calling. Now your career is significant and it certainly a big part of who you are, but here we see Paul talking about a spiritual calling more than he was a vocation. In Romans, Paul writes about the different spiritual gifts and how God has given each of us at least one. How about you? Which of the spiritual gifts helps you define your spiritual calling? Imagine if we started thinking in these terms? Ron called to be merciful for Christ. Susan, chosen by God to be a discerner for God. Mark, called to be a prophet for Jesus. God has called you to serve Him. Today follow the words of Paul to Timothy, “Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for calling me. You have created me and given me spiritual gifts. He me discern what they are and use them for You.
AMEN

Purpose

TODAY’S VERSE
“I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me.”
Psalms 57:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
I can understand God’s purpose for Michael the Archangel. I understand when God chooses a Moses, Abraham or David to do His will. I can comprehend Jesus picking twelve disciples to follow Him and God choosing Paul to be a great missionary. What completely mystifies me however, is that God has a purpose for me! Not only does God have a purpose for me, His purpose is to fulfill that purpose. Now you try. Read today’s passage and put yourself in the picture. God will fulfill His purpose for you! Can you get a sense of what that means? Perhaps you are thinking, “I’m nobody special.”  Sorry but God thinks you are! “I don’t have special skills.” You have exactly what God wants you to have. “I have done too many wrong things.” God’s grace is greater than all your wrong doing. “I can’t do anything out of the ordinary.” All God asks you to do is show up and be willing to live for Him. He will do the rest. Stop and hear God saying to you, “I am so glad I created you! I am so excited about you living out your purpose.” Today, cry out to God surrender yourself to Him. Purpose in your heart to live out the purpose He has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I surrender my life to You. Use me, live through me. Guide me and help me fulfill Your purpose for my life.
AMEN

The Holy Spirit Within Us

TODAY’S VERSE
“We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love.”
II Corinthians 6:6 (NLT)

“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” (NLT)
Galatians 5:25

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Paul was sharing about all the hardship and suffering that he and the church was experiencing. Even though the times were rough, he writes that it was the Holy Spirit that still produced the attributes that God desired in their life. Attributes like purity, understanding, patience, kindness and love were able to get them through the hardest times. In another passage Paul writes, “The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” How is it that the Holy Spirit can produce this effect in our life? Paul answers by writing, “Let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” Today seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Commit your way to Him. Ask for His leading, direction and influence in all that you do. When you do, He will produce the desired effects in your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit in my life. Holy Spirit, lead me today. I desire Your fruit to be evident in my life. Guide me, direct me, influence everything I do.
AMEN
