Light Your Corner Of The World

TODAY’S VERSE

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love synergy. That is the result of different entities working together to create a bigger response than they could by themselves. Have you ever been to a “candle light sing,” when at the end of the service one candle is lit and one by one each candle in the auditorium sends forth its illumination? What a beautiful sight. How amazing that one little candle can be part of such brightness. This is the effect Jesus had in mind when He said that we were the “light of the world.” He was leaving this world and with the power of the Holy Spirit in each of our lives, we would each shine our own light. Together we would become the light of the world. Dallas Willard in his book Hearing God writes, “Those who receive the grace of God’s saving companionship in His word are by that very fact also fitted to show humankind how to live.  Collectively the ‘called out’ people of God, the church is empowered to stand up for wandering humanity to see. When faced with starvation, crime, economic disasters and difficulties, disease, loneliness, alienation and war, the church should be, because it alone could be, the certified authority on how to live to which the world looks for answers.” We are called to be the light where we are. Today, come to Him, bring Him your candle; let Him light it for you and then light up your corner of the world. I’ll light mine. If everyone reading this devotional would let Christ light their life, someone is bound to be effected. There are people all around us dying to come out of the darkness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, speak to me, ignite my heart and then help me shine that light today. Help me share the light that I have with those hurting in utter darkness so they, too, can live in the light of Your love and glory.  In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Faith, Hope and Love

TODAY’S VERSE
We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.  And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.
I Thessalonians 1:2-3, 7-8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Christianity is more than a belief system; it is a way of life. It is more than a way of life; it is a tour of duty. When we became a Christian, we enlisted in the service of Jesus Christ. There is a spiritual battle in the world. Poverty, injustice, abuse, and hatred are all part of the human suffering going on around us. Depression, divorce, drug abuse, psychosomatic disease is all part of the world we live in and God has created us to be His ambassadors of love. You and I have a purpose beyond mere existence. We are disciples of Jesus Christ. No one knew this better than the church in Thessalonica. Paul was blown away by their seriousness and dedication. He thanked God for their faith, love and hope and committed himself to pray for them. But it wasn’t what we would consider “faith, love and hope.” Listen to what Paul wrote. He said, “your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope.” When is the last time we did something because of faith in a mighty working God? When did we labor in love? When have we had to endure hanging on to nothing else but hope? That is what it is to serve Jesus. You take the responsibility seriously. You involve yourself in the life of others. You step out, way over your head and know that only faith in God can get results. You take on situations that try your love beyond reason. It is hard, hard work. And when nothing else seems to be working, God comes through and you are inspired to get up and do it all again because there is hope. There is a hurting world. We have the answer. May we follow the example of the Thessalonians.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, give me faith to live for You today. Help me love today the way You want me to. Fill my heart with hope so it spills over onto everyone I come in contact with. Lead me on, dear Jesus.
AMEN

Church Of Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior.”
II Corinthians 12:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What happened? Paul is concerned about the behavior of the church in Corinth. This is the same church that he wrote, “I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people.” But the reality is, even though we are called to be His holy people, we are still a work in progress. There are no perfect people in the church. We sin. But it doesn’t mean we have to continue in sin. Here was a case where Paul was afraid that he would come to Corinth and find the church full of quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorderly behavior. So in his letter, Paul encouraged the people to examine themselves and repent of ungodly behavior. We need to do the same. We need to pray. We need to ask God to cleanse us of relational sin and help us to love one another. We need to ask God to fill our church with His Spirit. We need to call upon our Lord to help our church be an example of the way He lived. Today, pray for your church. Pray that together you would be a witness to your community of His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come and pray for my church. I ask that You would fill us with Your Spirit. I pray that You would help us repent of sin and live the life of love that You have called us to. Help us to love one another and those in our community. Help us be the witness You have called us to be. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Who Have You Been With?

TODAY’S VERSE
“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”
Acts 4:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever noticed how deeply influenced we can be by those that we spend time with? Reading books by the same author will deeply influence you to their way of thinking. People who have been married for a long time become more and more alike. A student becomes much like their favorite teacher and a disciple of martial arts much like their sensei. Today’s passage tells us that those that were arresting Peter and John were astonished at how much influence Jesus had on these men. How about you? Can your family tell who you have been spending time with? Who do those at your work believe you are inspired by? Today, start to build a deeper relationship with Christ. Spend time with Jesus and let Him influence your mind and behavior. Let Christ teach you, guide you and direct your path. When you do, others will be astonished and be able to tell you have been with Jesus.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I want to spend time with You. I want my life to be permeated with You so that others may recognize it and desire the same thing for their life. Teach me, guide me, mold me I pray. In Jesus name. AMEN

Sing

TODAY’S VERSE
“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.”
Psalms 40:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can tell people about God or we can tell them about the God that has made a difference in our life! As we come to know Christ the more He will put a song in our heart. A song, like the Psalmist says, that will cause people to see what God has done and amaze them. More that that, they will trust in God for their own needs. This is what happened to the small town where a woman came to a well that Jesus was at. After she met Jesus and He gave her hope, she ran home and told everyone, “Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.” The Bible records that the many of the people came from the town to meet Jesus. Many trusted in Him as their Savior. People today are dying for lack of a genuine song, a song that will meet the deepest needs of their soul. God has called you and I to sing. When we do, other people just like us, will put their trust in the Lord.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for the song You have put in my heart. Help me sing! Help me share with others all the wonderful things You have done for me.
AMEN

Do Good To Others

TODAY’S VERSE
“Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.”
Proverbs 3:27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How serious God takes our benevolence. We are His chosen representatives. We act in this world on His behalf. How then can we take the principles of the God who is love and not obey them? How can we withhold good from those in need if it is in our power to help them? In the Jewish law the Israelites were told not to be tightfisted. In the book of James the author tells Christians that if someone comes to us naked and hungry and we say to them, “God bless you, be fed be clothed” and do nothing to help them, how can the love of God be in us? There are all kinds of hurts and needs and so many of the people around us suffer with one kind or another. All it takes is a little time and some empathy and we will find more people to help then we ever imagined. Today, let the Spirit of God lead you to someone in need. When He does, do whatever is in your power to help them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I thank You that You have called me to be like You, a lover of people. Help me see others through Your eyes and then give me the strength and grace to do all I can to help them.
AMEN

Your Testimony

TODAY’S VERSE
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.’
I Peter 3:15 (NIV)

“They overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”
Revelation 12:11 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
There is something about a testimony that touches people deep in their heart. It is a powerful spiritual force. Sure it is important to share the scriptures. We need to tell the gospel story. But we also need to share with others the reality of Christ in our life. You may think, my story is not as dramatic as, “I once was blind but now I see.” Yet has not God allowed you to “see” peace in the midst of despair? Has not God provided the food that you eat? Has He not given you another day to live? People are looking for a God that is alive. A God that is relevant to everyday issues. Issues like the ones you face. Today witness with the love you have to those around you, and when you can, share how meaningful prayer, the scriptures and God is to the many different facets of your life. Many will come to know Christ better as they see the gospel according to your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, help me share today with someone who needs to know You. Help me share how You effect my life. Help others see in You in the way I live. Help me be ready to give to anyone who asks, the hope I have in You.
AMEN
