Holy Spirit

TODAY’S VERSE
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil,’ which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.
Galatians 5:16-17

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The fight between good and evil can get old. This is especially true when we are talking about our behavior. Which of us has not experienced the struggle between the Holy Spirit inside us and what Paul calls our “sinful nature”? Paul points out the difference in outcomes between both. He writes, “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. – But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The point is clear. Paul says that we need to let the Holy Spirit guide our lives to see the Spiritual results that our heart desires. Today, yield to the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to assist you in everything you do. Focus on the fruit of the Holy Spirit and watch it grow.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit alive in my heart. I confess my struggle with my sinful nature and ask that the fruit from fellowship with the Holy Spirit will grow in my life.
AMEN

Renewed

TODAY’S VERSE
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Colossians 3:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul starts this passage by writing, “But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.” What a list. And how many times have we tried to do this? The only way we can successfully eliminate these negative characteristics is by getting rid of our old sinful nature. However, the best way to “put off” our old nature is to focus on “putting on” the new! But how? We can do it by getting to know our Creator God and becoming more like Him. God has put in us the capacity to know Him. His Holy Spirit inside us guides us, and as we attune ourselves to Him, the renewing of our mind takes place. Today, spend time with God. Get to know Him and experience His presence and immense love for you. Let Him speak to your heart. As you do, you will experience yourself becoming renewed.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to know You more. I want to experience Your presence more. I want to be renewed more and more so I can be like You.
AMEN

What Do You Want?

TODAY’S VERSE
What do you want me to do for you?
Mark 10:49-51 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Today’s verse was from one of the first passages I ever preached on. I was a teenager giving a gospel message. I still remember the impact this simple passage had on me. Here was this blind man sitting by the road, and he heard that Jesus was coming by. Nothing could shut him up. He started shouting out to Jesus. The disciples tried to make him quiet down, but Jesus told them to bring the man to Him. I love what happens next. Jesus looks at him and says to the blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man simply answers, “I want to see.” What appealed to me then as a teenager still appeals to me decades later. It was the sincerity of Jesus and the invitation to tell Him what the blind man wanted. This is the same Jesus that we pray to. It is the same heart of Christ that bids us to come to Him. It is the same power available that asks such an open-ended question. Today, see Him passing your way. Sit before Him and answer His question, “What do you want me to do for you?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, I thank You for coming my way today. I thank You for caring so much for me that You would ask me what I need from You. I come silently before You and share my request. – Thank You, Lord, for hearing the desire of my heart.
AMEN

My Own Eye

TODAY’S VERSE
And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t agree with everything Freud wrote. There is, however, one of his observations that I think has some truth to it. Freud wrote about “projection,” the action of pointing out faults in others that we have ourselves.” Have you ever caught yourself criticizing someone and suddenly realized that you exhibit the same behavior? Jesus warned us about pointing out other people’s faults and ignoring our own. He said not to point out the little failings in other people while we have huge issues to deal with in our own lives. He mastered the use of hyperbole with the comparison of a speck in another person’s eye while we have this massive beam in our own. How funny this must have sounded to His audience, yet how true! We often take offense at other’s shortcomings when we have glaring inconsistencies in our own lives. Today, let us examine ourselves. Let us come before God and ask Him to point out our own “sins” and deal with them before we worry about someone else’s behavior.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for judging others. Help me to bring myself to you and allow Your Holy Spirit to work on my behavior. Lord, make me more like You.
AMEN

Lord LORD

TODAY’S VERSE
So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?
Luke 6:46 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to speak half-truths. It is easy to say we are committed to a cause and yet not live that way. What exactly is loyalty? Jesus asked this in His day. People were beginning to follow Him for the miracles or food rather than for the new spiritual reality He was teaching. What was worse, people said they were Christ’s followers but ignored His words. He compared this to a person who was building a house. Jesus insisted that if you make a house, build it on a good foundation. Likewise, if you are going to create a life worth living, it must be built on a good foundation of the teachings and person of Jesus Christ. Jesus was right. He said that you can call Him a lot of things, but if you are going to call Him Lord, you have to do what He says.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me follow You. Be the Lord of my life, and help me build my life on a solid foundation of Your word.
AMEN

What Fruit Are You?

TODAY’S VERSE
By their fruit you will recognize them.
Matthew 7:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Not all things are what they seem. Jesus once cursed a fig tree that gave the impression that it was bearing fruit when, in fact, it was barren. Something about “saying one thing” and “doing another” really got to Jesus. Whether it was the Pharisees who posed as religious zealots but knew nothing of the righteousness God was interested in or a false prophet who pretended to know what God wanted to say and led people down the wrong path. Jesus would rather be with a prostitute, tax collector, or leper who sincerely repented than those who had the pretense of faith. Jesus said it this way. “You can tell a tree by the fruit it produces.” Peachtree? Peaches. Apple tree? Apples. Christians? The fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Today, when people look at your life, what fruit will they see?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that the Holy Spirit will bear His fruit in my life so that when people see me, they will glorify You.
AMEN

Get Right With God

TODAY’S VERSE
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
Romans 3:22-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Are you right with God? This is a serious question, yet most of us don’t spend much time thinking about it. Somewhere along the line, we have developed our own theory of how to be right with God. It usually involves doing some good, at least more good than we think we have done wrong. But the Bible tells of a different plan. It talks of a God who loves us and has made a way that we can be forgiven. It shares how receiving Christ as our personal Savior will bring us into right standing with Him. By putting our faith in the sacrifice of His son, Jesus, on the cross, we become God’s child and are born again into His family. This brings us into a whole new relationship with God, and we are made right with Him. Today, you can have this relationship. Accept Christ as your personal Savior, ask Him to forgive your sins, and make you His child. Put your faith in Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross for you and you will have a right relationship with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I accept Christ’s death on the cross for me and ask You to forgive all my sins. I accept Christ as my Savior, and put my faith in Him. Take my life and help me live it for You.
AMEN

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, it’s not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me; I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can be better at my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship when we should be praying for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then wait to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life-changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest, and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You honestly and openly. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.
AMEN

Wholeheartedly

TODAY’S VERSE
Acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.
I Chronicles 28:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to say that we are a Christian. It’s another to follow Him wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, in many cases, we fall short. But that is not the way God intended it to be. We have been called to follow Christ in how we think, feel, and behave. David knew the seriousness of following God. When he commissioned his son, Solomon, to build the Temple, he challenged Solomon to live Godly. King David told him to acknowledge God as the Lord of everything and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and a willing mind. God doesn’t want pretense; He wants sincerity and authenticity. That is why He searches our hearts and motives. Might our prayer be that of David’s at the end of Psalm 139. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Today, decide to serve Him wholeheartedly.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the opportunity to serve You. Help me to be true to You and to serve You with wholehearted devotion and a willing mind. In Jesus’ Name.
AMEN

I Am A Loved Child Of God

TODAY’S VERSE
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
I John 3:1 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I understand that it is really hard to get our mind around concepts like infinity, predestination, and omnipresence. There are things about God that will take all eternity for us to understand. What I don’t understand is why it is so hard to believe we are God’s loving child. John emphatically tells us that God’s love for us is proven in the fact that God calls us His children. John even punctuates the point with the phrase, “And that is what we are!” Paul, however, knew how hard it would be and challenged us. He wrote, “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.  May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.” Can you imagine what our life would be like if we really knew and experienced His love? How different would we approach the challenges that come our way? The truth is most of us wrestle with the concept of being loved as God’s child. We have no clue as to what it means or how it should affect our lives. Today, this can change. Ask God to help you understand the depths of the love He has lavished on you. It will change your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that my life will be a living testimony of the fact that You have lavished Your love on me by making me Your child. Might everything I think, say and do today be shaped by this glorious fact. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
