Love The Giver More Than The Gifts

TODAY’S VERSE
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.” – At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?”
John 6:26, 66-67 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes we don’t get it. Our priorities get all mixed up. Like many who followed Jesus, we follow Him for the food and miracles. We want His blessings. We have the offer of a deep relationship with God, but instead, we seek the blessings. But what happens when blessings don’t come? What happens when the job we wanted doesn’t pan out, sickness interrupts our plans, and our children don’t act as we think they should? When our eyes are on our circumstances and not our creator, it is easy to get discouraged. We can lose hope and become bitter. Why? Because we have worshipped the gifts and not the giver, the blessings, and not the blesser. Today, we need to renew our love for God. Knowing Him is the real blessing. We need to love God, who alone is the source of our joy. No matter what circumstances come our way, we will find true peace and joy as we develop a relationship with God and truly love Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me love You today more than ever. Help me seek You more than Your blessings. Help me understand Your love for me and the incredible joy that is mine when I follow You.
AMEN

Love One Another

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
I John 4:7-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How can we miss it? How could God make it any clearer? There is one central theme throughout the Bible, yet we don’t seem to get it. It is not optional. It is not a suggestion. When asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus said it consisted of one thing! It was love. We are to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbor in the same way. John, the disciple who Jesus loved, says the same thing. He says that if we know God, we will love because God is love. God, Himself, set the example by giving the extreme example of love. He gave His son’s life as a sacrifice for our sins. How, then, can we argue with John’s conclusion? Might it be the theme for today, “Since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your strength, Your power, and Your heart in order to love the way You love. Help me to love all those who come my way today. Help me make love a priority in my life. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

The Beauty Of The Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple.
Psalms 27:4 (NASB)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to get wrapped up in life and not catch all the beauty. Can you imagine being on a business trip to Hawaii and never stopping to gaze at the magnificent ocean or the incredible sunsets? Yet how different is that from going through day after day, week after week and never meditating on God’s goodness and unfailing kindness? David knew the treasure he had in his relationship with God and decided to appreciate it. He made it his priority. He said that the ability to be in God’s presence and behold His beauty was the most important request he made of God. I love the imagery. “Beholding the beauty of the Lord.” Have you ever beheld true beauty? It takes your breath away. It saturates your senses. It changes you. Oh, that we would behold God in the same way. Today, take time and behold the beauty of God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for letting so much time go by and not appreciating Your presence. Forgive me for taking You for granted. You are God and Your love, kindness, grace, and forgiveness are beyond description. Today help me behold Your true beauty.
AMEN

Realization

TODAY’S VERSE
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
John 14:20 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
A realization is different than assuming something. You can think you “know” how difficult something may be and later explain, “I never realized how much work it was going to be!” Knowing can be academic or theoretical, whereas realization is experiential knowledge. Actual realization is an awakening. It is an “aha” moment. We can “know” all about Christ, but realizing His presence is totally different. Jesus is explaining that because He rose again from the dead, we should realize that He is equal with God the Father. Jesus is also saying that because we believe He has a special relationship with God the Father, we should likewise realize that He has a special relationship with us. As God the Father is “in” Jesus, Jesus is “in” us. Here is the crux of the matter. When are we going to start living as if the Almighty God of the Universe is living in us? When are we going to realize all that is ours in Christ? It is not too late. Today, meditate on God’s love for you and His desire to live in and through you. Ask Him to help you realize what that should mean to you and the way you live.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for your presence in my life and for making me Your child. I pray that today I may fully realize what it means to have You alive in me.
AMEN

Your New Reality

TODAY’S VERSE
Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.
I Corinthians 1:30 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to miss the reality of what Christ has done for us. We get so caught up in our everyday lives. Our habits, thoughts, and emotions constantly remind us of our humanness. However, Paul shares that there is another reality. There is a new you! It was created in Christ when you were born again. Born again as in a “new” creature. So, what is this new creature? It is royalty, a new child of God. It is not made with flesh and blood like you were in your mother’s womb, but rather born again in the spiritual realm. God took you, with your self-will and sinfulness, and made you right with Him. He created you this time, pure and holy, and most of all, He freed you from sin’s power. It is hard to believe, but you don’t have to strive to be right with God. You don’t have to earn God’s love. When Christ died on the Cross, you received His free gift of salvation. He freed you from sin that very moment. He made you over again, pure and holy. He canceled all records of your wrongdoing and made you right with Him. Today, live in this freedom. Look into the mirror of God’s love and see what He sees.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your love and forgiveness. Thank You for freeing me from sin. Thank You for Your salvation and for making me pure and Holy in Your sight.
AMEN

Come Boldly To God

TODAY’S VERSE
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:15,16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The author of Hebrews uses the High Priest as a model of Christ. It was the High Priest who represented the Israelites to God, confessed their sins, and gave an offering for their offenses. To do this, he would first have to confess his own sins. He would have to make a sacrifice for his own failings. Then, after his cleansing, he could represent the people. You see, there was a limit to what the High Priest could do. He couldn’t help the people stop their sins. He could not meet the individual needs of the people. Today, God has created a better way. He has sent Himself to be our High Priest. God, in the person of Jesus Christ, came once and for all time and sacrificed Himself so we could be forgiven. More than that, Christ is on the right hand of the Father, interceding for our every need. He knows your weaknesses, so He gives you complete access to His love, power, mercy, and grace. If you know Him, you can say with confidence that He is “my” Savior. When Christ became your High Priest, He made it personal. Today, come to God’s very throne. Come to the one who loves you and has everything you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for sacrificing Your Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ. I thank You for knowing who I am, You know my weaknesses, and You still love me. I especially thank You for promising to care for my every need with Your mercy and grace. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Working With God

Working With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.
Psalms 127:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God has created us to work in harmony with Him. We are at our best when we allow God to guide us and be Lord of whatever we do. Paul wrote, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” The Psalmist suggests that making plans and working toward goals without God is foolishness. It is wasted. Instead, seeking God’s guidance, blessing, and partnership in everything we do is the wisest and most prudent thing we can do. How much of our lives will never reach their full potential because we do not let God work with us? Today, seek God’s guidance, wisdom, and partnership in whatever you do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, lead, guide, and direct me in all I do today. Help me join You in Your work so what I do today will not be in vain but for Your glory.
AMEN

Change Your Spots

TODAY’S VERSE
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
II Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You’ve heard the saying, “A leopard can not change its spots.” Well, today’s passage begs to differ. God is the God of change. When we become His child, He begins a process of making us more and more like Him. How? Paul writes that it is through the process of transformation. He says that we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. By his own testimony, Paul shares that he was being inwardly changed and renewed daily. The good news is that our God, the great creator, is also the re-creator. Today, we can present our whole selves to Him and ask God to renew our minds and personalities day by day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am so thankful that You do not give up on me. Instead, You believe in me and have a wonderful plan for my life. I come and commit myself to You and ask that You would renew me day by day and make me more like You.
AMEN

Forgiveness

TODAY’S VERSE
LORD, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness.
Psalms 130:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to keep a record of sins. How many times have we found ourselves caught up in bitterness over someone’s repeated offenses against us? How many times should we continue to forgive? Jesus addressed that very question when Peter asked Him how many times we should forgive someone. In a magnanimous gesture, Peter suggests seven times, but Jesus said seven times seventy was more like it. The truth is God’s love is greater than we can imagine. David was trying to make that point in this passage. He was amazed that God is justified in keeping a record of all our wrongs but chooses not to. Instead, what does God do? He offers forgiveness. Forgiveness is a powerful healer. Is there something weighing heavy on your heart? Is there a secret sin or something from the past you need to repent of? Today, bring it to God. The God who does not keep a ledger of your wrongdoings but instead offers complete forgiveness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for not keeping a record of my wrongs. Instead, I bring my sins to You, ask You to forgive me, and set me free. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Joy and Quiet

TODAY’S VERSE
I have stilled and quieted myself, just as a small child is quiet with its mother. Yes, like a small child is my soul within me.
Psalms 131:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever seen the behavior of a mother and infant? They go through a rhythm of joy and quiet. The mother is happy to be with the baby, and the baby is joyful in return. Laughter and a lot of love are exchanged. Next, the baby will quiet itself and want to rest. Rest is especially true after nursing. The joyful bond between the mother and child is followed by quiet. A deep, serene trust is built. This is the way God prepares us for life. He knows that, in this world, we need joy and quiet. David knew this, too. David purposely stilled himself to a place of quietness where he could enjoy and be nourished by the fellowship of God. He knew that peace, hope, courage, and strength came from His love bond with His Heavenly Father. This loving bond resulted from times of joy and quiet in God’s presence. We need to do the same. God offers us peace that passes all understanding. He gives rest to those He loves. He asks us to be still so we can know that He is God. Today, put aside some time and quiet yourself before God. Be at peace, resting in His love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You today and desire a sacred time of quietness before You. I need Your peace. I need to be assured of Your love. I desire to experience Your quiet presence. As I come before You, like a child resting in their mother’s love, I ask You to please quiet my heart and fill me with your joy, love, and peace. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
