Love As God Does

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
I John 4:7-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was, He said to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbor as yourself. If this wasn’t enough to convince us that love is essential, the Apostle John makes it abundantly clear by giving us a unique piece of theology. He defines God. He says, “God is love!” Not “God wants us to love.” Not “God desires love.” Not “God loves us.” He says, “God is love, and if anyone does not love, he or she does not know God.” Today, let us reset our priorities and love the way our God, who is love, loves.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You are love. I cannot even imagine what that means. But I do know that You want me to love as You do. So today, dear Lord, help me love others the same way You love me.
AMEN

Servant of the Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:38

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a shock it must have been to Mary. First, to see an angel would have been an incredible experience. But to have that angel say that you would have a baby through Immaculate Conception and that the baby would be God in the flesh would have been incomprehensible. But instead of trying to get her mind around it, Mary let her faith understand. In love, trust, and obedience, she submitted to the word of God through the angel. How did she do it? A better question may be, “Why did she submit to such an inconceivable experience?” She could say, “Let it be to me according to your word,” because she was confident in who she was. Before this ever happened, she had made up her mind that she was a servant of the Lord. What a difference it makes in our life when that issue is settled. You see, the word “No” and “Lord” cannot go together. The only possible answer to the Lordship of Christ is, “Yes, Your will be done.” Today, come to God as young Mary did. Say, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I desire Your will in my life. Like Mary, I come to You today and say, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
AMEN

Really Love Others

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them.
Romans 12:9 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to pretend. When it comes to loving others, it is easy to go through the superficial motions without getting involved in a more profound way. Paul writes that we are to “really” love each other, and if we do not understand his meaning, he gives us a list of loving attributes. He writes, “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other and finally, do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” Today, consider all those that you will be with, and with God’s grace, don’t pretend to love others; really love them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You are love, so I ask that through the power of Your Holy Spirit, help me quit pretending and really love others.
AMEN

Care and Share

TODAY’S VERSE
Do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing?
I Corinthians 11:22 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul was concerned about the selfish practices of some of those that were coming to their Christian fellowship and worship service. They were being gluttons, getting drunk and totally ignoring the needs of the poor that were there. It was a form of discrimination that angered Paul and brought shame to Jesus Himself. Paul wrote to them saying that humiliating the poor by ignoring their needs, flaunting their riches in front of them and not having compassion on them was the same as despising the church and bringing disgrace upon it. God cares for the poor and needy. The question is, “Do we?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for ignoring those in need and bringing shame to You and Your church. Help me to care and share the way that brings glory to Your name.
AMEN

Love His Way

TODAY’S VERSE
Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
John 15:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are commands, and then there are commands. Jesus gave us a tall order when He told His disciples to love others the same way He loved us. Jesus’ love was unfathomable. His sacrifice and compassion were His trademarks. It doesn’t take long, and we will find that we cannot do it. We cannot love the way He does without His help. The good news is that just a few sentences later, Jesus looked at His disciples and said, “You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit.” Here in lies our answer. Here is the solution. God chose you and me to be His disciples. He chose us to love others in the same way He loves us. And whom He chooses, He can empower. We don’t love in our strength but in His. Today, in the power of the Holy Spirit, let us love those around us the way Jesus would love them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, Help me in the power of your Holy Spirit, to love others the way you love.
AMEN

To-Do List

TODAY’S VERSE
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It helps me to have a “to-do” list. It helps me keep my priorities. It helps me remember what is important. It helps me focus my attention on what needs to be done. Today’s verse is a great spiritual “to-do” list. Do you want our spiritual life to be fulfilling? Do we want to live a Spirit-filled life? Then there are three things that Paul says are God’s will for our life. Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances. May God help us achieve these top three priorities today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, please help me always be joyful, never stop praying and be thankful in all circumstances.
AMEN

Faith

TODAY’S VERSE
Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the hardest parts of following Christ is exercising our faith. It was hard for the disciples, and they lived with Jesus! He had just finished feeding the 5,000 people and told the disciples to take the boat across the lake. There was a big storm, and they were afraid. When Jesus came walking on the water toward them at 3:00 in the morning, they were terrified. St. Mark writes, “Then Jesus climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.” According to the author of Hebrews, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” This is more than optimism. Faith is the confident belief in the trustworthiness of our Lord. We can have optimism because of our faith. But we exercise faith in God, even when things don’t seem optimistic. Today put your faith in the loving trustworthiness of our Lord.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for my lack of faith. Help me to see through Your eyes and put my faith and confidence in Your trustworthiness.
AMEN

Come To Your Senses

TODAY’S VERSE
God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
II Timothy 2:25-26 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever felt God nudge you? You know, the feeling in your stomach that something is not right. The twinge in your conscience that says, “This is wrong.” The circumstance that goes haywire and wakes you up from your spiritual stupor. The concern from a friend that gently warms you of impending danger. God uses these and more to help us repent. And in that single acknowledgment that God is right and we are so desperately wrong, He leads us to the truth. We come to our senses and can flee the trap that Satan had for us. How good God’s grace is. He saves us from the penalty of our sin and often the consequences of our sinning. Today, say with David, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father God, thank You for watching over me. Thank You for helping me see the error of my way and leading me to repentance. Today, help me live for You.
AMEN

Prove It

TODAY’S VERSE
If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.
James 3:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Apostle James reminds me of the Prophet Isaiah. In Isaiah 58 the Prophet rebukes Israel for coming to God with their sanctimonious fasting. But God wasn’t interested. Instead, God said, “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.” Listen to James as he writes, “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” So today, let’s take James up on his challenge and prove that we understand God’s ways by doing the good works that God has called us to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me live out my faith and fulfill Your desires, by doing the good works that you have for me to do this day.
AMEN

New Life

TODAY’S VERSE
Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
II Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When we read today’s verse, we often think of the person that has been raised outside of the church and has never known anything about Christ. Or we think of the person whose lifestyle has been in complete opposition to scriptural standards. We understand how they can become new. But what about those who were raised in the church? Those who have heard the Bible taught since they were little? What is new in their life? The answer is maturity. That’s right. When we truly understand what “belonging to Christ” means, we can choose to believe what Christ believes about us. A “new person” means we don’t have to live with our immature, childish belief systems. Shame, false guilt, people pleasing, and negative self-beliefs melt away when we see that we are a “new” creature in Christ. So you may have belonged to Christ for a long time but have you embraced the new person He created you to be? The old childish, immature life is gone. Embrace your new mature life in Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me understand how to live that “new” life you gave me. Help me to break away from my “old life” beliefs and embrace the new. In Jesus’ Name.
AMEN
