Passages

TODAY’S VERSE
Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
I Timothy 6:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do you pursue? What is important to you? Each decade there seems to be a whole new set of situations, priorities, and goals. Life is much different at 20 than at 40. Yet, even though life changes, the essential attributes don’t. No matter who we are, what age, what situation, we can choose to follow Paul’s advice. He admonishes us to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. With this pursuit, it doesn’t matter if we have toddlers or are empty nesting. The Holy Spirit will use these spiritual disciplines to help us through all our passages of life. So today, no matter what stage of life you are in, may God help you pursue with all your heart a Godly life full of righteousness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my situation. Help me today to pursue You and a Godly life that is full of righteousness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
AMEN

Promises

TODAY’S VERSE
I praise God for what he has promised; yes, I praise the LORD for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
Psalms 56:10-11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Promises are a blessed reality. But what if you didn’t know about them? How would you apply them to the way you live? Imagine how much fear would be averted if we remembered that He has promised never to leave us or forsake us? More than the promise is the promise maker. His promises are true because He made them. Will there be times of doubt? Probably, but that is where faith comes in. You cannot have faith without doubt. It would not be faith. We come to God with our finite humanness, weaknesses, needs, and doubts and read His promises. At that moment, we make a choice. Stay with our doubt or believe the promise maker. Today, consider your situation and say with David, “I praise the LORD for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, thank You for Your promises. How faithful You are. How true is Your word. Help me today. I lay down my doubts and choose by faith to believe Your precious promises. I trust You, Lord, and will not be afraid. Because of Jesus.
AMEN

Love

TODAY’S VERSE
The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.
I Timothy 1:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Love can get very confusing. Our emotions can get out of skew, and we can find ourselves wandering down a road that we were never intended for. This is why Paul said that the purpose of his instruction was to help us be filled with a love that comes from a pure heart, not one with envy, deceit, fear, lust, bitterness, or selfish ambition. Paul wanted us to strive to have a love that comes from a clear conscience, not one full of remorse, guilt, shame, or regret. Finally, Paul encourages our love to be guided by genuine faith, not a false notion, legalism or religious ritual. The good news is that the love Paul is writing about is taught in the Bible. May God help us study the word so our love will come from a pure heart, clear conscience, and genuine faith.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me, as I study Your word, to understand it and live by it. Help me have a love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.
AMEN

Whole

TODAY’S VERSE
And he said to him, Arise, go your way: your faith has made you whole.
Luke 17:19 (AKJV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There were ten lepers on the side of the road quite a distance from Jesus. They had heard he was coming, so in desperation, they cried out for the Lord to have mercy on them. Jesus did and told them to go and show themselves to the priest. According to Levitical law, this was what was expected when someone was healed of leprosy. The Priest would declare them clean. It would have been easy to dismiss what Jesus said. Where were the potions, long prayers, or sackcloth and ashes? There was no oil, anointed handkerchiefs, or laying on of hands. Instead, Jesus said, “Go show yourselves to the Priests.” It said that on their way, they were healed. I’m sure they were excited, so they probably ran to the Priest’s home. However, one of them decided to stop, turn around, and return to Jesus. He came back to thank Him. There was something about giving thanks that touched Jesus. He said, “Where are the other nine? Only this one returned to give thanks.” He admired the man’s faith and attitude of gratitude. He loved his spirit of thanksgiving. Then Jesus gave him something more than healing. He gave him wholeness. He said, “Go your way: your faith has made you whole.” This was a different word than “clean”. The others were healed or made clean of their leprosy; he, however was made spiritually and physically whole. Today, give God thanks for all He is doing in your life. Develop a spirit of praise and thanksgiving, and let God make you whole.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for my lack of thanksgiving. Today I want to acknowledge all that You have done for me. Help me have a heart of gratitude toward You. Increase my faith and make me whole.
AMEN

Loving Fellowship

TODAY’S VERSE
We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through.
I Thessalonians 3:2-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Fellowship is critical to living our Christian life. Paul sent Timothy to the Thessalonians to encourage them in their faith and strengthen them. Godly fellowship can do that. How seriously do you take your responsibility as a brother or sister in Christ? How important do you see your role when it comes to those God has put in your life? Part of your responsibility as a disciple of Christ is to be Christ to those around you. You have an enormous God-given capacity to make a difference. God has put you in the lives of those around you so you can strengthen them, encourage them in their faith and keep them from being shaken by all the troubles they are going through. After all, isn’t that what God has done for you?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me be conscious of those around me. Help me look for opportunities to encourage others in their faith, give them the strength to move on, and keep them from being shaken by all the troubles they are going through. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word.
Hebrews 5:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Maturity is not a given; rather, it is something we must strive for. Have you ever seen an adult act like a child? It is uncomfortable to watch. It is unnatural. Yet most of us have some area that we need to “grow up” in. We may be mature when it comes to handling sadness but are immature with our anger. It could be fear that causes us to revert to childlike behavior. In today’s verse, the author of Hebrews challenges us to mature spiritually. He writes, “You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.” We don’t mature in Christ by accident. We must ingest the solid food of God’s word. Through meditating on it and praying over it, God helps us mature into the person He has called us to be. You may be old in the Lord but are you mature? Today commit your life to spiritual growth.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I am Your child. Help me mature into the person You have created me to be.
AMEN

Radical Love

TODAY’S VERSE
Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:36 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is hard to exaggerate the radicalness of Jesus’ teaching. Many have claimed to be prophets, but no one has ever taught and lived like Jesus. He lived a life of love, even in His death on the cross. His teaching demands the same of us. He said, “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you.” He hasn’t called us to be believers; He has called us to be His disciples. Imagine what the world would be like if every one of us who entered a church entered a life of radical obedience to the kind of love Christ has called us to! It’s not too late! We can start today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Merciful Father, Our God who is love, fill us with Your Spirit. Help us live as Jesus did. Empower us to love with Your love!
In Jesus’ name and for His sake.
AMEN

Do The Word

TODAY’S VERSE
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
James 1:22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Self-deception is so real. Denial can keep an addict in their addiction. It can keep us from living the way God wants us to. The way to overcome deception is to expose ourselves to the word of God and then do what it says. For example, James writes in this same passage, “So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” He continues, “Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” Today, read the word, but don’t stop there, meditate on it and ask God to show you what you need to do. Be a “doer” of the word and not just a “hearer.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me when I just read Your word and ignore what it says. Help me obey what You say and live the way You want me to.
AMEN

Press On

TODAY’S VERSE
Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Romans 7:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is hard to wrestle with our human condition. Paul struggled with this. He wrote, “I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.” Paul came to grips with the fact that he was a human being, flawed and prone to sin. Yet, at the same time, he knew he was born again and strived to live the life Christ called him to live. He knew that Heaven would be a sweet metamorphosis. He wrote, “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.” Paul let go of the past and pressed on. We, too, must let go of our sins, seek forgiveness, and press on. Today, get up and let Christ cleanse your heart. Ask Jesus to forgive you, help you, guide you, and give you the strength to live the life He has called you to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus. You know my propensity toward sin. But I will not be discouraged. Instead, I will press on. Help me, guide me, give me the strength to live the life You have called me to live.
AMEN

Faith

TODAY’S VERSE
Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.
Daniel 3:17-18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We often think of authentic faith as superseding reality. Miracles do that. Faith, on the other hand, is exercised with the full knowledge of the reality before us. God is the one who does the miracles; we are the ones who exercise faith in the uncertainly with confidence in God and His love. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were perfect examples. They exercised tremendous faith in God and gave a marvelous testimony of it. They said “No” to worshipping the idol and testified that they knew God would deliver them from the furnace. Then they said, “But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” They had a strong faith, believing that God was going to deliver them. However, knowing that it is God that makes the final decision and they may die, they still chose to obey God rather than the King. They trusted God for the outcome. Today, trust God with your own fiery furnace. Know that He can deliver you, live in that belief, but no matter what, trust Him for the outcome.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You know what I am in need of. Please increase my faith. Help me believe You for deliverance and trust You with the outcome. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
