Lament

TODAY’S VERSE
For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain.
Psalms 109:22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Lord is not put off by our crying out in grief and anger. The Bible is full of lament. Life is hard, and there are times when we cannot make sense of anything going on. There are situations in our lives that seem so unjust. Others feel as if God isn’t paying any attention at all. And so we cry out to God. We let Him know how we feel. Anger, sadness, fear, disbelief all come surfacing to the top, and we unload. How loving God is to hear our desperate complaints. But it doesn’t stop there. In the Bible, when there was a lament when all the emotion was spilled out on the floor, there came a moment of sanity. This was a time of reflection that allowed them to readjust their sails, reset their bearings, regather their soul. In this Psalm the author wrote, “Help me, O LORD my God! Save me because of your unfailing love.” The author was able to give his situation back to God. After the recommitment, there is a moment of praise. In this case, the author wrote, “But I will give repeated thanks to the LORD, praising him to everyone. For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them.” Today, don’t hesitate. Let God know what is on your mind. Spill out to Him your lament. Purge your soul of its emotion, reground yourself in the Lord, and then praise Him because He does care for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, You know my heart. You know my pain. Hear my complaint; put me back on the right path. Cause my heart to praise You again. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Keep It Real

TODAY’S VERSE
Then he said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts.
Luke 16:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to perform. We play different roles depending upon which play we are in. At work, we are one person, at home another. At school, we adapt to the particular people around us, and at church, we put on the righteous role. The question is, “who are we?” When we quit coping, quit people-pleasing, stop posturing and posing, who are we? If you know Jesus, you are a child of God, a citizen of heaven, a disciple of Christ. This is not pretending. It is a reality. When you dedicated your life to Christ, you became a citizen of another world. Integrity, love, truth, justice, morality, purity are virtues of His kingdom and run counter to what we, as humans, have come up with by ourselves. That is why in the very next verse, Jesus says, “What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.” Today, Jesus invites you to keep it real. You don’t need to act, perform or appear to be something you are not. Instead, give Him your heart. Confess and repent of any sin, live for Him, and love others. This is what God is looking for.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, keep me from pretense and posturing. I want to live for You in all I do. Help me to this end, I pray.
AMEN

Love The Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
I love the LORD because
Psalms 116:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Psalmist finished the verse. He wrote, “I love the Lord because He hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen.” What would you write? Why do you love the Lord? It’s good to remember. When I was early on in my marriage, many couples I knew were getting divorced. It scared me. I thought, “What if I fall out of love with my wife?” I decided then to make a list of why I loved her. I put it in my car and looked at it when I got home at night. I have written a list every year since. What would you write about God? Here are a few things to consider. His mercy; His love for you; His death and resurrection; His forgiveness; His constant awareness of you; His patience, compassion and understanding; His friendship and companionship; His comfort and promises. Today, tell Him. Tell God why you love Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I love You. I love You. I love You.
AMEN

Search My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
Psalms 139:23-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to give in to sinful behavior. You know the kind that you participate in and later think, “What was I doing?” Hopefully, God will convict us, and we can repent of it lest it becomes a sinful habit. But what about the behavior we don’t even pay attention to? Lust, greed, jealously, anger, slander, lying are just a few examples. Sadly we can go through a whole day and not even think anything about it. We turn a deaf ear to any conscience. We don’t notice a twinge in our heart saying, “This is wrong.” This is when we need the Lord’s help the most. David knew this, so he invited the Lord to do an inventory of his heart. He prays and asks the Lord to search his heart and point out everything that offends Him. Why? So he could clear his conscience and get back on God’s path of everlasting life. What about you? When was the last time you asked the Lord to take an inventory of your heart? Today, come to God and pray what David prayed. The good news is that this same David also wrote about God, “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Father, search me, O God, and know my heart. Point out anything in me that offends you, Lord, and help me repent. Forgive me, I pray. In Jesus’ name and because of His sacrifice.
AMEN

Transformed

TODAY’S VERSE
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
Romans 12:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Humans have lived in this world for a long time. Being adaptive creatures, we conform to the environment we live in. How many things do we do every day out of habit? Habits that are nothing more than conforming behavior to what we learned in the world. What automatic thoughts, assumptions, beliefs do we subscribe to because we have conformed to the surroundings we live in? To be transformed means to change our nature or character. That is what Christ wants to do with our life. He desires that we become more like Him, so He transforms our minds. He gives us the Holy Spirit to guide this whole process. Soon our thinking, values, beliefs, assumptions begin to align with the mind of Christ. This can happen to you. Today, quit conforming to the world’s values and ask God to transform you by renewing your mind.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for conforming to the thinking of this world. Today come in the power of the Holy Spirit and transform my mind so I can be more like You.
AMEN

Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger.
I Corinthians 1:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is one thing to see a baby behaving like a baby but totally inappropriate for an adult. An assumed maturity should come with age, but sadly, this is not always the case. Emotionally we can be stuck in “arrested development.” Spiritually Paul says we can be stuck in infancy. Instead of growing at a reasonable rate in our faith, we become more nominal. In the letter to the Galatians, Paul writes, “The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” This is the growth God desires. He promises if we abide in Him and He in us, we will bear much fruit. Today, make it your goal to grow in Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I want to grow in my faith. I want to grow in my knowledge of Christ. I want to grow in my relationship with You. Help me I pray.
AMEN

Servanthood

TODAY’S VERSE
And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.
John13:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Humility is an essential part of our Christian experience. Christ has called us to follow Him in love and selflessness. Paul wrote, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” Jesus said it best after washing His disciple’s feet, “And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.” Today, humble yourself and be the servant Christ has called you to be.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord Jesus, I want to be Your servant. Help me have the same mindset of humility and servanthood that You do.
AMEN

What Is A Christian?

TODAY’S VERSE
But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
I Corinthians 6:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You call yourself a Christian but do you really understand what that makes you? It is more than being a church member. It is more than knowing some Bible Stories. It is more than having a moral lifestyle. Being a Christian means, you are a child of God. Today’s verse says that you were cleansed from your past when you became a Christian and received Him as your savior. You were made holy in God’s sight. All your sins were forgiven, and you were made right with God. Today revel in the reality of your new life in Christ. Your past doesn’t define you. Christ has! You are a child of God and deeply loved, cleansed, forgiven, and set apart for His service.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for cleansing me, making me holy, and making me right with You. I am Your child and deeply loved by You.
AMEN

True Faith

TODAY’S VERSE
How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.
James 2:18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to say we have faith in God. The test, however is whether our faith is affecting our everyday living? Although the dictionary and most people treat faith as a noun, James is suggesting that faith is a verb. Faith without action, he says, is dead. The faith that James is writing about isn’t something we “have” but something we “live.” Faith that we have displays itself every once in a while, especially if something troubling happens. But the faith James is writing about is an everyday realization that God is with us and living for Him. It affects our actions. James asks a great question. If your life isn’t being lived out for Jesus in the way you love others, then is it really faith? Today, let’s not “have” faith. Let’s “live” it. May your faith bless all those around you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for my dead faith. Help me believe in you and live my life with a faith that is vibrant and blessing all those around me.
AMEN

Renewed

TODAY’S VERSE
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.
II Corinthians 4:16

TODAY’S THOUGHT
For much of life, God has ordained two processes. Renewal and maturity. We were not meant to stay static. As His followers, we were intended to grow and mature. But this maturity does not come easy. It comes from a daily relationship with Jesus. We mature as we go to Him each day and learn emotionally, spiritually, and experientially. This is a renewing process. Whether our day is exhilarating, full of joy and wonder, or we go through pain, disappointment, and sorrow, God is there. Whether good or bad, we never stop living for Him. As we do, He promises to renew our spirit day by day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Christ, I want to be like You. Help me mature. Help me this day be renewed in my mind, spirit, and heart. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
