Encouragement

TODAY’S VERSE
But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us.
II Corinthians 7:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We all need encouragement. With all the pressure and stress we live under, it is easy to become frustrated, disillusioned, and discouraged. But most of our discouragement comes from a mindset that does not include God with all His love and power. God makes all the difference in the world. Today include God in your plans. Speak to Him about your frustrations and disappointments. Bring Him all your needs. Ask Him for wisdom and discernment. As you do, you can say with Paul, “God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged me.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Lord, remind me of Your love for me. Help me to understand Your power. Help me to lean on You and not my understanding. Here is my heart; encourage me, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Truth

TODAY’S VERSE
Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.
Psalms 86:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is hard to learn if we are not teachable. Fear, anger, jealousy, depression, doubt, and shame can keep us from believing the truth. Giving in to temptation, selfishness, being materialistic, and being full of pride will keep us from living the truth. David wanted to know the truth. More than know, he wanted to live the truth. Because of his desire, he asked God for the two things he knew would help him accomplish the task. He asked God to be his teacher, and he asked for a pure heart. Today, pray what David prayed and live according to the truth.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, teach me Your ways that I may live according to Your truth. Grant me a pure heart that I may honor You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

God Is With Me

TODAY’S VERSE
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
II Corinthians 13:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul beautifully closes his letter to the church in Corinth with a wonderful blessing for the people. It incorporates the whole Godhead. He begins by blessing them with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace in the form of unmerited mercy and forgiveness of all we have done. With this grace, we begin to comprehend the love of God. We let our roots grow down into God’s love and receive the power to understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. If this isn’t enough, Paul invites us to fellowship with God through His Holy Spirit. This communion is life-changing and possible because God puts His spirit in us. What a marvelous plan, an extraordinary reality, God in all His fullness fellowships with us. So today, let this blessing sink deep into your heart, “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord help me be conscious today that the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit is with me. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

What Controls You?

TODAY’S VERSE
Christ’s love controls us.
II Corinthians 5:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Christianity was never meant to be a nominal religion. It is a call to radical discipleship. Not a forced dictatorship where we become unwilling subjects but rather a volunteer commitment out of gratitude and thanksgiving for all the love that has been given to us. Paul put it this way, “He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.” So what are you living for? Today, let Christ’s love control you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Christ, thank You for Your death and resurrection. Thank You for forgiving me of all my sins. Today, I submit to You. Let Your love fully control the way I think and act. AMEN

Choose The Truth

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue you. Don’t let him fool you into trusting in the LORD by saying, ‘The LORD will surely rescue us. This city will never fall into the hands of the Assyrian king!’
Isaiah 36:14-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
King Sennacherib of Assyria sent his chief of staff to go and intimidate King Hezekiah and the people in Jerusalem. The King of Assyria was going to lay siege to the city and had heard of God’s protection. He also knew that God wouldn’t need to protect them if they surrendered, so he used fear and intimidation to get them to distrust God’s faithfulness and strength. That is how Satan works. He tempts us to doubt God and His truth. “Did God really say?” is what he asked Eve in the Garden of Eden. “If you really are the Son of God” is how he began his temptation of Jesus. What are you struggling with? Where are you being attacked? What is Satan saying to you? What doubts are you tempted to believe? Remember Satan is the “Father of lies” and Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.” Today, choose the truth. Believe in God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, so often, I am assailed with doubts and lies. I am tempted to give up and give in. Forgive me, Lord. I believe; today help my unbelief. I choose truth.
AMEN

Plant In Good Soil

TODAY’S VERSE
The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity.
Luke 8:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus told the parable about the farmer that planted some seed. Some of the seed fell on the footpath and the birds came and ate it. This represented Satan who comes and distracts and discourages us with doubts right from the start, stealing the seed that was planted. Some seed landed on stone. It sprouted fast because of the warmth and some moisture trapped in the rocks. Everything seemed right until the roots tried to grow. They couldn’t because the rocks were in the way. The rocks represented temptations that keep us from following Jesus. Perhaps the illustration that is most prevalent for us today is found in today’s verse. This is the seed that was cast into the weeds and thorns. The weeds represent the cares, riches and pleasures of this life that come and choke out our spiritual growth. How is the seed that was planted in your heart? Is it being nourished and cared for through prayer, the scriptures and a personal relationship with Christ? Today, examine your spiritual life. Get rid of anything that is impeding your growth and let the seed grow in the deep rich soil of your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for letting doubts, distractions, temptations and cares for this world impede my spiritual growth. Today I rededicate myself to You and open my heart to receive deep spiritual growth. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Knowing God

TODAY’S VERSE
But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
Psalms 86:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who is God to you? If I asked you to write down five attributes of God, what would you write? Many would choose omniscient (all-knowing), omnipresent (present everywhere), omnipotent (all-powerful), immutable (unchanging), and Holy. It sounds like a list from a Theology Exam. That’s because we pride ourselves on knowing about God. But David was a man after God’s own heart. More than knowing about God, David knew Him. So when David made his list, he wrote, God is compassionate, full of mercy, slow to get angry, filled with unfailing love, and faithful. It is important to know about God but imperative to know Him. Today, meditate on God’s compassion, mercy, patience, love, and faithfulness. Know Him as David did.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I know that you are Holy, all-powerful, all-knowing, unchanging, and everywhere. But Lord, I also long to know You, to know your love, mercy, patience, compassion, and faithfulness. I want to know You in a deeper, more profound way. Here is my heart, Lord; fill me.
AMEN

Listen

TODAY’S VERSE
I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guard post. There I will wait to see what the LORD says and how he will answer my complaint.
Habakkuk 2:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Troubles were everywhere. The Babylonians were coming against the Jewish nation. They were brutal and Habakkuk the prophet was complaining to the Lord. “Lord aren’t you listening. Will you let them get away with this forever? Will they succeed forever in their heartless conquests?” But then he stopped and went to the watchtower to stand guard. And while at his post, he declared that he would wait to see how the Lord would answer him. Habakkuk knew the secret to listening to God. It is in asking the right questions. In his book, ‘Experiencing Healing Prayer’ Rich Richardson writes, “Learn to recognize that God is concretely present with you and then to ask good questions of this very present God. Then wait until he speaks into your heart and mind.” Jesus, Himself said, “I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me.” Today, tell God your complaints, ask Him relevant questions then wait patiently for God to answer.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I confess that I have many complaints, but I don’t wait for You to answer. Today I come with an open mind and heart. Speak to me I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Respond To Him

TODAY’S VERSE
I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’ to a nation that did not call on my name.
Isaiah 65:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If we were honest with ourselves, we would remember times when we thought, “Where was God? Why wasn’t my prayer answered? Why did this happen to me?” It is easy to feel these feelings and have these questions when tragedy catches us off guard. But today’s verse poses an opposite scenario that has a lot of bearing on this spiritual dilemma. The Prophet Isaiah quoted God saying He (God) was ready to help us, but no one asked for help. Nobody was looking for Him. God was asking for humankind to respond to Him, but nobody did. God wants a relationship with us, but do we want one with Him? He is so much more than a 911 call when an emergency strikes. He is the God who is there, the God who loves us and wants to impart to us wisdom, understanding, and deep spirituality. And ironically, it is these very things that get us through difficult times. Today, God is waiting. He desires fellowship with you. Will you call on Him?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, forgive me for my apathy. Forgive me for not responding to Your calling out to me. I come today and ask that You would guide me, teach me, and fellowship with me. I desire a deeper relationship with You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

I Believe

TODAY’S VERSE
Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
John 11:26 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Martha’s brother had died. When Jesus came to Martha’s house, she said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” What an amazing faith she had. And yet, Jesus felt compelled to ask her if she believed that those who believe in Jesus would never die. Her answer was immediate, “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” It is one thing to say someone else is going to be with Jesus forever, but when faced with your own finiteness, what do you believe? Will you live with Him forever? Martha personally knew Jesus as the Messiah, the one sent from God, and it impacted her faith. Today, how much more should we have faith? We have the benefit of the scriptures that teach us so much about Jesus. We have the Holy Spirit, the very indwelling of our Holy God’s Spirit, to guide us into all truth and bear witness of the truth of Jesus and our eternal life with Him. Today, let the faith of Martha be your example and hear the words of Jesus, “Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, thank You for Your love, sacrificial death, and resurrection. Thank You for Your promise of eternal life to all who believe. Lord, I believe.
AMEN
