Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Comfort is only as good as the source of the comfort. The word comfort means to “come next to.” The best comfort comes from someone who has the power to comfort you. Like the police officer who says, “You are safe now.” The Doctor who says, “Your test came back negative, you will be okay.” Paul is encouraging the early church to be comforted because God is the source of our comfort. He writes, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles.” Are you troubled today? Come next to God and let Him comfort you. Are you weary and don’t know what to do? Move toward God, lean upon Him, and let Him wrap you in His arms. He will comfort you. Are you at the end of yourself, too frozen to move? Turn your head in His direction, whisper with your thoughts, and He will hear you. He is the merciful Father and the source of all comfort. Today, come next to Him and be comforted.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am coming next to You. I need Your arms; I need Your face, I need Your voice. Comfort me, dear merciful Father, of all comfort. Strengthen my arms, give courage to my legs, help lift my head up. Here I am, comfort me I pray.
AMEN

Divine Love

TODAY’S VERSE
Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside. I was so foolish and ignorant-I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you. Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.
Psalms 73:21-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Lies, false assumptions and unfounded predictions can drive us to despair. The fear, anger, and sorrow they bring cause us to do questionable things. In today’s verse, the Psalmist was torn up inside. What he believed made him bitter, foolish, and even ignorant to God. However, when He came to his senses, he saw how bad he was before God and repented. Have you been there? You know, those times when you think God should have given up on you? But please, let it sink in, God doesn’t give up! The wonderful truth is that God forgave the Psalmist. God comforted, counseled, and continued to guide him. The love he experienced from God caused him to write one of the most beautiful verses ever written about God. “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” Today, might this same reality sink deep into your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, my heart cries, “Hallelujah, what a Savior!” I know I don’t always live the way I should. I know many days my attitude is all wrong. But today, I know You forgive me. I know that You will never abandon me. I know that You are committed to my maturity. Help me remember this as I live out this day.
AMEN

Sufficient

TODAY’S VERSE
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
II Corinthians 12:8-9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t understand suffering. Pain, heartache, sadness seem so antithetical to the love, joy, and peace that we claim is the Christian experience. I don’t understand why our first and only stop isn’t Heaven instead of earth. But here we are, and in this world, we do have tribulation. All of us have crosses to bear. In his book, “Desiring God’s Will,” Dr. Benner writes, “We experience good and bad in our childhood. But Jesus’ invitation is to accept the givens of our lives and follow Him. We experience love and betrayal in our marriages and friendships. But Jesus’ invitation remains the same, to accept the givens and follow Him. – We want to either fight against the suffering or ignore it. What Jesus asks is something quite different. – We can choose to acknowledge the suffering rather than ignore it. And while holding it, we can choose to look toward God. If we do, we discover God looking toward us.” The mystery in all of this is God’s grace. Grace stands between us and our pain. It is the salve for our breaking heart. It is the presence of God amid our darkness. It is the strength in our weakness. God promises it will be sufficient. He promises. Today, don’t turn away. Quit running. Lay down your burden and follow Christ. He is sufficient.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You. Only You can be my strength. Only You can give me the grace I need. I look to You, dear God, for You promised, Your grace will be sufficient.
AMEN

Love

TODAY’S VERSE
So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
Matthew 7:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes I get it all backward. I come to God with a need asking Him for help. Then for whatever reason, the thought comes to me that I am unworthy of God’s graciousness. This shame causes me to doubt whether God would want to do anything good for me. It takes all my faith away. However, when I read this passage, I realize it’s not about me! It’s about God. God is love, and it is His love for me, not my worthiness, that needs to be my focus. And why not? Even fathers, as imperfect as we are, know how to give gifts to our children. Jesus used this as His illustration pointing out that if we, in all of our limitations and sinfulness, know how to do good to our children, how much more will our heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him? God loves you. He loves you and desires to provide you with what you need. All He wants you to do is ask. Today, ask. Ask without shame or doubt. Your heavenly Father adores you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for Your love. Forgive me when I let insecurities and lies lead me to a place of unbelief. Help me focus on Your love and rest in the fact that I am intrinsically lovable. Thank You, dear Father, for making me that way and giving me so many wonderful gifts.
AMEN

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

TODAY’S VERSE
Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
I Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In his book The Power Of Habit, Charles Duhigg talks about “keystone habits.” A keystone habit is a habit that brings about a cascade of changes resulting in a considerable outcome. Exercise is a keystone habit. It affects our energy, attitudes, health, body image, many things that can result in a significant change in our life. The practice of planning our day the night before can cause many small behaviors that result in a substantial change. Thankfulness is a Spiritual Keystone Habit. Can you imagine what would happen in your life if you created a habit of gratitude and thankfulness? You would be more open to God’s direction. You would stop letting anger, worry, and fear derail your life. You would be more optimistic and open to opportunities to move through your situations instead of getting stuck in them. Thankfulness is a spiritual discipline that will change everything! But more than that, giving thanks in all our circumstances is God’s will for your life! Today begin to develop the keystone habit of thankfulness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how often I react to life with negativity and discouragement. I know that You want me to give thanks in all things, but so often I fail. Today, help me Lord build the habit of gratitude and thankfulness so my life will glorify You.
AMEN

Supernatural Love

TODAY’S VERSE
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Colossians 3:12-13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Christianity is so much more than a religion. It is a Holy calling. But contrary to so many images of religious zealots, we are not called to violence; we are called to a radical life of love. Jesus made this clear in His example, and the Apostle Paul did in his teachings. We are God’s holy people, and He has asked us to permeate our life with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. And not just with each other. We are to love the world in the same way He does. We are to love the unlovely. We are to love the needy. We are to love those that despise us, those that use us, those that come against us. We are to love those that disagree with us, those that are different than us, those that hurt us. This is a calling, and He who called us can empower us to do it. It is His Holy Spirit that lives in us to do His good pleasure. So today, call upon God to help you live a life of love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You have called me to be Your ambassador of love. I confess I cannot do this in my power. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and empower me to see with Your eyes and to love with Your heart. Because of Jesus, my Lord, and Savior.
AMEN

Show Me Your Glory

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” – Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”
Exodus 33:14-15, 18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The people of God had sinned. While Moses was on the mountain top receiving the ten commandments from God, the people were rebelling by creating an idol and worshipping it. God was angry and was going to destroy the people. However, Moses pleaded with God to spare the people. Finally, God told Moses to take the people away without Him lest His fierce anger comes against them. Moses knew better than to lead these people without God’s guidance so he asked to reconsider and lead the people with His own presence. Even more, Moses asked God to show him His glory. Oh, that we would seek out and depend upon the presence of God the same way Moses did! What a difference it would make in our life. In his book “Experiencing Healing Prayer”, Rick Richardson writes, “Do you long to be filled at the core of your being with more strength, more substance, more hope? You may feel an urgent need for immediate help and practical steps. But I implore you to realize that knowing God, practicing God’s presence, and seeking God’s life is more important to your healing than anything else in all the world.” C.S Lewis, in his book “Miracles”, writes, “The presence of God is the most real thing we ever encounter.” Today, decide like Moses not to go any further, not to consider any new direction, without being conscious of the presence of God. Might we pray, “Lord, show me Your glory.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know so little about Your presence. All I know is I don’t want to take another step without really knowing You. Lord, help me become aware of Your Glory. Reveal Yourself to me. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Renew My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting
away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been at the bedside of someone dying from a dreadful disease? It is tragic to watch someone’s body shut down. Over time they begin to waste away. But there is another form of wasting away that is just as tragic. It is the wasting away of our soul. If not careful, we can find our inward person end up in despair, confusion, and helplessness. Our body is but a container for who we are. Paul reminds us that even if we waste away physically, it is crucial that we don’t lose heart. How? By renewing ourselves inwardly day by day. Today, don’t spiritually waste away! Spend time with God, meditate on His word, let His promises soak deep into your soul, and replenish your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need You to renew my heart. Replenish my soul with Your word and Your love. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, I pray.
AMEN

God’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are two ways to look at today’s passage. The first is the most obvious. God in His omnipresence is everywhere you go and nothing can separate you from Him or His love for you. It is God-dependent. God has taken on the challenge always to love you no matter what outward circumstances you may be in. And He can do this because, as John writes, “God is love.” But there is another reality that is hidden in today’s verse. That is your own “inward state awareness of God’s love.” As you mature, you assimilate your circumstances and influences around you. You allow them to create in you an inner state of being. It is like a person who has a loving caregiver knows, even when they are separated for long lengths of time, they are still loved by that person. The love was just as real in the person’s absence as in their presence. This is because, over time, the consistency of the love of their caregiver had become part of their inner state of being. How much more can this be true of God? God has created you with the ability to know His love. Know it in such a profound way that even in dire circumstances, you can experience His loving presence. As you fellowship with God and get to know His heart, His love will create in you a trusting confident state of mind. You will be convinced that what Paul said is true. Nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your deep love for me. Thank You for allowing me the privilege of knowing You and having Your love become a part of my very being. Help me to trust in that love.
AMEN

What Do You See?

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do you see? A lot of it depends on what you are looking through. Each of us comes to the Scriptures with different lenses. We see through our experiences, beliefs, senses, and personality. So although scripture is true, we may have a skewed view of it. For example, in today’s verse, what do you believe? When you close your eyes, do you see God as a mighty one who will save you? Or do you have some doubts as to His ability or desire? Do you see God as rejoicing over you with gladness? Is He exulting over you with loud singing? Is He ecstatic in His love for you? Or do you have a hard time feeling like a recipient of that kind of attention from God? Finally, can you picture God quieting you with His love? Does the very thought of God bring peace to your heart? God’s word is true, but unless you read it and challenge your emotional thinking, you will not align your real beliefs with God’s. Today, ask God to help make His word clear to you and start to see what He has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, as I read Your word, help me to see what You really want me to see and to believe it with all of my heart. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
