Live Like Christ

TODAY’S VERSE
Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.
I John 2:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How true is this? How often do we hear the word, “hypocrite” in association with Christians? Why? Because we follow a high standard. We claim to follow Christ so people assume we are going to live like Him. Why not? Isn’t that what Jesus expected? He said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works because I am going to be with the Father.” Isn’t that what Paul meant when he wrote to the church in Corinth, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” Peter wrote, “Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.” It is a tall order. Sure we will fail, but in humility, we confess and ask for His strength to help us to try again. The good news is He hasn’t left us empty-handed. He has given us the Bible. Paul wrote, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Today, let us live like Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord Jesus, I try to live like You, but I fall so short. I cannot do it by myself. Please help me, through the power of Your Holy Spirit and Your word, to live like You.
AMEN

Cravings

TODAY’S VERSE
For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
I John 2:16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Cravings. It has been my experience that most cravings have their roots in emotional and spiritual issues. Of course, by the time addictions are created there is a heavy part of the brain involved. But in their genesis, cravings stem from some childhood edict that we are flawed. This arouses certain fears that if we do, feel, or think certain things, we’ll be neglected and abandoned—which to a child is to be left to die. This is a primal fear. It stays with us because these fear-based lies are timeless and the brain will do anything to protect us from them. None of this is conscious, but the bottom line is that we “crave” certain things in order to stay alive. So, if we escape enough, have enough, or achieve enough we believe we will be safe. That’s the world’s lie. The truth is, there is never enough! Only truth from God can really set you free. Jesus is the truth, and His love will fill the emptiness, fear, frustration, anger, sadness, and disgust that have been living in your heart. Today, trade in the need for excitement and their false promises for the satisfaction that comes from the truth of God’s love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I have bought the lie. From a child, I have believed that having the most, the best, or being famous and admired would satisfy all my emotional needs. But it was a lie. Only You can satisfy. Help me know You more and find my true happiness in You.
AMEN

Godliness

TODAY’S VERSE
Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
II Timothy 3:5 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Here is a riddle? How can you be Godly without God? You can’t. Yet, that is what so many of us try to do. We read scripture. We go to church. We live a moral life. But does that make us Godly? The Pharisees followed that same program, yet Jesus constantly criticized them for their ungodliness. The secret is in the second part of the verse. We become Godly by God’s power. It is the power of the Holy Spirit alive in our hearts that teaches us, rebukes us, and corrects us. It is God Himself that helps us live for Him. Today, fall in love with God. Seek His power in your life. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead can bring you into a Holy loving relationship with God Himself. As you love Him and live in His presence, His power will make you more like Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I desire to follow You. I want to live a Godly life, but I cannot do it myself. Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit and make me more like You.
AMEN

What Pleases God

TODAY’S VERSE
And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.
I John 5:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever worked for someone that you were really in synch with? You knew what they wanted. You knew their passions, goals, and plans. This made it easy to work on their behalf. You could express their desires to others and speak for them in various business dealings. When it came to corporate affairs, you knew what pleased them. How much more should this be true in our Christian experience with God? We are His child. We have His word. We have God’s Spirit living within us. For this reason, we have been called to be about God’s business here in this world. Therefore John says that we can be confident that God will hear us when we ask for anything that pleases Him. So the first question is, “How well do you know God?” The second is, “Do you know what pleases Him?” If not, ask Him. Today, pray, “Lord, help me to know You and discern what pleases You so I can pray according to Your will.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me to know You better. Help me to know what pleases You so I can pray according to Your will.
AMEN

My Wilderness

TODAY’S VERSE
In the wilderness their desires ran wild.
Psalms 106:14

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The wilderness may seem like a great place to visit, but there is a reason people don’t live there. It is a barren place, a place that cannot sustain human life. It can have extreme weather, a place where there may not be water or nourishment. It is also a place that can test and try your very soul. The Psalmist said it was a location where the hearts of the Israelites ran wild. You may not have to worry about a wilderness where you live, but where is your soul living? Is it barely surviving in a wilderness of its own? Does it exist without the spiritual care that you need? Like the Israelites, are your desires running wild? Today, don’t settle for the wilderness when God wants to give you the fertile land of His word. Don’t settle for barrenness when God wants to give you the fruit of His presence. Come live in the Promised Land.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I confess that I have often kept my soul in a wilderness. I need a change. Come nourish my soul and give me life.
AMEN

Keep It Real

TODAY’S VERSE
Then he said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts.
Luke 16:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to perform. We play different roles depending upon which play we are in. At work, we are one person, at home another. At school, we adapt to the particular people around us, and at church, we put on the righteous role. The question is, “who are we?” When we quit coping, quit people-pleasing, stop posturing and posing, who are we? If you know Jesus, you are a child of God, a citizen of heaven, a disciple of Christ. This is not pretending. It is a reality. When you dedicated your life to Christ, you became a citizen of another world. Integrity, love, truth, justice, morality, purity are virtues of His kingdom and run counter to what we, as humans, have come up with by ourselves. That is why in the very next verse, Jesus says, “What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.” Today, Jesus invites you to keep it real. You don’t need to act, perform or appear to be something you are not. Instead, give Him your heart. Confess and repent of any sin, live for Him, and love others. This is what God is looking for.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, keep me from pretense and posturing. I want to live for You in all I do. Help me to this end, I pray.
AMEN

Jesus Cares For You

TODAY’S VERSE
But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.
Luke 22:32 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus knew that Peter was going to deny Him. He knew who Peter was. He knew Peter was human and struggled in the same way that you do. So what did Jesus do? He pleaded in prayer for him! He prayed that Peter would not become so discouraged that he would give up. Instead, Jesus desired that Peter would repent and turn back to God. And then, in renewed faith, Peter would go and help others. This same Jesus comes to you. He knows your life. He knows your struggles, and He is pleading in prayer for you. He wants you to repent and turn back to Him. Jesus doesn’t define you by your past, your faults, your weaknesses, or your sins. Neither should you! God deeply loves you, and His death and resurrection have taken away all your sins. This is good news. This is grace. Today believe it, accept it, and strengthen others with God’s grace in the same way He has strengthened you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, thank You for pleading in prayer for me. Thank You for Your loving kindness toward me. Thank You for Your forgiveness of all my sins. Please help me to share this truth with others so they will be strengthened too.
AMEN

My Sins

TODAY’S VERSE
Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
Romans 1:29-30 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I read today’s verse, and I think, “Lord be merciful to me a sinner.” Just when we think there is a pecking order of sins and ours isn’t that wrong, Paul comes along and shows us how bad we need Jesus. When our self-righteous mask starts to feel comfortable, Paul helps us peel it off. We are human. We sin. But God saves. He forgives. He fills us with the Spirit and helps us live the way He wants us to. Today, look in the mirror of today’s verse. Confess any sin and accept God’s forgiveness and grace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, be merciful to me. Forgive me for all my wrongdoing. Help me, through Your love and grace, live for You.
AMEN

Bondage Of Sin

TODAY’S VERSE
Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 7:24-25 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
A part of our human condition is our propensity toward sin. Paul shared that this fight between good and evil made him miserable. He explains, “The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.” How true is that? Cravings, habits, emotional stress can lead to all kinds of sin. Fear, worry, insecurity creates an atmosphere where misbehavior grows. Anger, ignorance, prejudice, hatred can lead us into relational strife and discord. Paul asked the right question, “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” More importantly, he gave the right answer when he wrote, “Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” The truth is we are powerless to handle our sinful nature by ourselves. We need to turn our will and life over to Christ. He came to forgive us and set us free.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, my sin has me baffled. I need You to free me from this bondage of sin in my life. Come Jesus, forgive me and help me live the life You have called me to.
AMEN

Drifting

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t let me drift toward evil.
Psalms 141:4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Drifting. It can take you by surprise. You think you are heading in the right direction, but suddenly you are somewhere you don’t want to be. You could be crossing a large lake in a canoe and think you are heading toward your destination, but the boat’s drift will take you way off course. There are only two cures. The first is to not drift in the first place. This is what the Psalmist asked God to help him with. Stay away from things that take you in the wrong direction. Get rid of anything that starts you to waiver. The second is to re-correct your course. When you feel yourself drifting, you correct yourself and move back toward your destination. The scriptures, prayer, meditation, good Christian fellowship all help us re-correct our path. Today, check your bearings. Where are you spiritually? What can you do to get back on course? What can you do to stop from drifting?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me not drift away from You. Help me continually re-correct my course.
AMEN
