Look Behind Anger

TODAY’S VERSE
And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.
Ephesians 4:26-27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Anger is a powerful emotion. It becomes a “sin” when it controls us. Paul says if held onto, anger can give a foothold in our life to the devil. When decisions are made out of anger, they can rarely be correct because it is impossible to be angry and loving simultaneously. God wants us to act in love. Here is the truth. Anger is not the real issue. It is a secondary emotion. We get triggered, and off we go, out of control when behind the anger, we are really fearful, sad, disgusted, or feeling ashamed. Anger does not solve that. Today, don’t sin by letting anger control you. Ask yourself, “What am I really feeling behind the anger?” and let God heal that.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, you know all about my anger. You also know about my wounds and other emotions that are bothering me. Help me, Lord. Heal me of these painful emotions. Help me know the truth of Your great love for me that I might not give a foothold to the devil.
AMEN

Tender Mercies

TODAY’S VERSE
He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
Psalms 103:4

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever had untender mercies? You know where someone gives you a break but humiliates you, threatens you, and assures that you know you owe them? That is not tender mercies! But here, the Psalmist is saying that God’s mercy is tender. Think of that word—Tender– a tender touch, a tender kiss, a tender look—God’s is a tender mercy! How can I begin to express how tender His love is for you? God comes to you with His tender mercy and is ready and able to forgive you for all your transgressions. David, in another part of the Psalms, wrote, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” Today, don’t shy away. Come to God for His forgiveness. Come to God for His love. Let Him pour out on you all of His tender mercies.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your tender mercies. How I love You, how my heart praises You for all Your love toward me.
AMEN

Hear Me

TODAY’S VERSE
Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help.
Psalms 86:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How wonderful that we don’t have to go through this life alone. We were created for a relationship with God, and He desires that we come to Him with our needs. In this chapter, David asks God to answer, protect, save, and be merciful to him. Why? Because according to David, God is, “So good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.” David knew the heart of God, and He trusted Him. Therefore he could finish this chapter by writing, “Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry. I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me.” Today, take advantage of such love. Come to God with your deepest needs. Cry out to Him. God is there and will hear your prayers.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank you that I can come to You with my deepest needs. Answer me, protect me and be merciful to me, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Come To Your Senses

TODAY’S VERSE
God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
II Timothy 2:25-26 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever felt God nudge you? You know, the feeling in your stomach that something is not right. The twinge in your conscience that says, “This is wrong.” The circumstance that goes haywire and wakes you up from your spiritual stupor. The concern from a friend that gently warms you of impending danger. God uses these and more to help us repent. And in that single acknowledgment that God is right and we are so desperately wrong, He leads us to the truth. We come to our senses and can flee the trap that Satan had for us. How good God’s grace is. He saves us from the penalty of our sin and often the consequences of our sinning. Today, say with David, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father God, thank You for watching over me. Thank You for helping me see the error of my way and leading me to repentance. Today, help me live for You.
AMEN

God’s Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.
Romans 5:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can do a lot with our sins. We can rationalize them, ignore them, glorify them, obsess about them, flaunt them, regret them or repent of them. No matter what we do with our sinful behavior, the Bible makes it clear that our sins separate us from God. The good news is that God can do one thing with our sins that we cannot. He can forgive them, no longer counting them against us. He does that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. God, in His grace, forgives us of all our sins. Paul wrote it this way, “So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Today, acknowledge any wrongdoing. Bring it to Him; knowing this, our sins will never exhaust God’s grace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You, dear Lord, for Your amazing grace. Thank You that Your grace is greater than all my sins, and if I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me of all my sins and cleanse me from all my wrongdoing.
AMEN

God Cares

TODAY’S VERSE
Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
I Peter 5:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It seems so counterintuitive. Give your worries and cares to someone else? That is precisely why you are worrying. You don’t have anyone to give your cares to! Who do you trust? Who can take all your cares, concerns, everything you worry about, and “Poof!” they’re gone? And yet Peter comes along and says that you can give all your worries and cares to God! More than that, Peter gives you two reasons why you can trust his advice. First, it is God he is talking about. It is nothing for Almighty God, the Master of the Universe, to handle your situations. But the second reason is just as convincing. Peter insists that you can bring your cares to God because He lovingly cares for you. What a glorious gift. What a tremendous blessing. So today, come to God and give Him all your worries and cares. He really does care for you!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father God, I come to You with all my cares. I bring all my worries to You. Today, I put my complete trust in You, because I believe You care for me.
AMEN

All My Troubles

TODAY’S VERSE
I cry out to the Lord; I plead for the Lord’s mercy. I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles. When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn.
Psalm 142:1-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I wonder, when Peter wrote, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you,” if he didn’t have today’s verse in mind. King David knew what troubles were. From being a shepherd boy protecting his flock from wild animals to being hunted like a fugitive by King Saul, David had his trials. As a King, he dealt with war, famine, drought, and the people’s complaints. But David also knew that God was the solution. He cried out to God, sharing his complaints and troubles. He pleaded for God’s mercy and received it over and over again. When he was overwhelmed, he cried out to God because he was confident of this one thing; the Lord knew which way David needed to go. Today, in all your struggles, turn to God. Pour out your heart to Him. He will show you the way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I need You. You know my troubles. You know my complaints. You also know the way I should turn. Help me, guide me, direct my path, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

What Do You Desire?

TODAY’S VERSE
I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead.
Philippians 3:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do you aspire to? What desires do you have? It is an important question, but the answer is more important. The best desires are the ones that result in many benefits. What if you were granted a wish? Wouldn’t it make sense to ask for unlimited wishes? Paul’s desire was similar. He wanted something that would have a continuous impact on his life. He wanted to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead! He wrote, “Yes, everything else is worthless compared to the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with Him.”
Today, desire what can change and guide all of your life, knowing Christ and the His resurrection power.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, please help me. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead.
AMEN

Respond To Him

TODAY’S VERSE
I was ready to respond, but no one asked for help. I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am!’ to a nation that did not call on my name.
Isaiah 65:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If we were honest with ourselves, we would remember times when we thought, “Where was God? Why wasn’t my prayer answered? Why did this happen to me?” It is easy to feel these feelings and have these questions when tragedy catches us off guard. But today’s verse poses an opposite scenario that has a lot of bearing on this spiritual dilemma. The Prophet Isaiah quoted God saying He (God) was ready to help us, but no one asked for help. Nobody was looking for Him. God was asking for humankind to respond to Him, but nobody did. God wants a relationship with us, but do we want one with Him? He is so much more than a 911 call when an emergency strikes. He is the God who is there, the God who loves us and wants to impart to us wisdom, understanding, and deep spirituality. And ironically, it is these very things that get us through difficult times. Today, God is waiting. He desires fellowship with you. Will you call on Him?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, forgive me for my apathy. Forgive me for not responding to Your calling out to me. I come today and ask that You would guide me, teach me, and fellowship with me. I desire a deeper relationship with You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Repentance

TODAY’S VERSE
Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight.
Psalms 51:4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a difference between being sorry for my sins and repenting. Repenting is about God. Being sorry is about me. It is my pride that causes shame. What will people think? What will happen to me? Will I be rejected, abandoned, or forsaken because of what I did? This leads to embarrassment, humiliation, and fear. But David felt something else. He felt deep Holy remorse. He saw the true nature of his behavior. It was a sin against God. That insight led him to repentance. What freedom comes when I see my behavior as an offense against God. Why? Because He is the one who created me. He is the one who has paid for all my sins. He is the one who has been offended and the one who still loves me unconditionally. Today, when you think of your sins, look into His face. See Him. See His broken heart and then see the cross. That same heart is full of love and forgiveness for you. His love leads to true repentance.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to see the true nature of my sin. It is against You that have I sinned. Thank You for Your love and complete forgiveness. Help me to live my life for You.
AMEN
