Come Boldly To God

TODAY’S VERSE
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:15,16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The author of Hebrews uses the High Priest as a model of Christ. It was the High Priest who represented the Israelites to God, confessed their sins, and gave an offering for their offenses. To do this, he would first have to confess his sins. He would have to make a sacrifice for his own failings. Then, after his own cleansing, he could represent the people. You see, there was a limit to what the High Priest could do. He couldn’t help the people stop their sins. He could not meet the individual needs of the people. Today, God has created a better way. He has sent Himself to be our High Priest. God, in the person of Jesus Christ, came once for all time and sacrificed Himself so we could be forgiven. More than that, Christ is on the Father’s right hand, interceding for our every need. He knows your weaknesses, so He gives you complete access to His love, power, mercy, and grace. If you know Him, you can confidently say that He is “my” Savior. When Christ became your High Priest, He made it personal. Today, come to God’s very throne. Come to the one who loves you and has everything you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for sacrificing Your Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ. I thank You for knowing who I am, You know my weaknesses, and You still love me. I especially thank You for promising to care for my every need with Your mercy and grace. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Talk With God

TODAY’S VERSE
My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.
Psalms 27:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a glorious invitation! Two elements to an invitation can make it special: who is inviting you and what you are asked to do. In both cases, today’s invitation is extraordinary! First, it is God who is inviting. David said that his heart heard God’s invitation. Have you? Have you sensed that call of the Holy Spirit to come and fellowship with God? He bids you come to Him. God desires your fellowship, but you must come. Second, we see that God has invited you to talk with Him! So many times, we talk “to” God, not “with” Him. What kind of friendship would you have with someone if you did all the talking? That is not fellowship; it is not a relationship. God Almighty has asked you to talk with Him. You can share your innermost thoughts and then wait and listen to what He has to say. God wants to commune with your heart if you will let Him. Today, God has invited you to come talk with Him. Stop now and start a conversation, talk with Him, listen, and let it begin a lifelong dialog.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your invitation to come and talk with you. Today I come to share my own thoughts and situation and to listen. Talk to me God, I want to hear from You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

Follow God

TODAY’S VERSE
Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Choices can make all the difference in the world. We are constantly taking in data, predicting, and making decisions. There are so many choices each day we cannot keep count. However, some choices are more critical than others. Vanilla or chocolate ice cream may not affect your world one little bit. But moral or legal issues can alter your life. The friends you choose and the things you choose to do can steer the direction of your life. Who you will marry, college choices and career choices are life-altering milestones. But the one choice that guides all others is your choice to follow God or not. Moses calls it “choosing life”. And like many major choices, they are only as good as the thousands of little choices you make to support your decision. You can decide to cross the ocean in a sailboat, but it is the daily choices you make in re-correcting your course that get you to the other shore. In the marriage ceremony, we ask the groom, “Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking every other, keep to her only, so long as you both shall live?” He can say, “I do” but it is only as good as him getting up every day and saying, “I will!” Moses said that you can choose life by making a choice to love God, obey Him and committing yourself firmly to Him. Today choose to follow God in all you do because “choosing to follow God is the key to your life.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I choose You. I choose to live for You. I choose to follow you in all that I do. Guide me, direct me. Give me the strength to do this, in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Forgiveness

TODAY’S VERSE
Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.
Psalms 32:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What hope is found when we decide to stop doing something wrong. What peace is ours when we set out to make right those wrongs that we have committed. What joy we experience when we unburden ourselves of things that have held us, prisoner, in the dungeon of guilt? David paints the picture of inner turmoil and anguish we bring upon ourselves when we store the toxic emotions of a guilty conscience. He writes, “When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.” But later, David writes, “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!” Where there is pain, there can be joy. Where there is guilt, there can be forgiveness. Today, come to God with anything that is bothering your conscience. Don’t go another day without experiencing the joy from a heart forgiven.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the substitute death of Christ for my sins. I know I can bring any of my wrongdoings to You for Your complete forgiveness. Lord, hear my prayers of repentance and restore joy deep into my soul.
AMEN

Renewed

TODAY’S VERSE
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Colossians 3:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul starts this passage by writing, “But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.” What a list. And how many times have we tried to do this? The only way we can successfully eliminate these negative characteristics is by getting rid of our old sinful nature. However, the best way to “put off” our old nature is to focus on “putting on” the new! But how? We can do it by getting to know our Creator God and becoming more like Him. God has put in us the capacity to know Him. His Holy Spirit inside us guides us, and as we attune ourselves to Him, the renewing of our mind takes place. Today, spend time with God. Get to know Him and experience His presence and immense love for you. Let Him speak to your heart. As you do, you will experience yourself becoming renewed.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to know You more. I want to experience Your presence more. I want to be renewed more and more so I can be like You.
AMEN

A Clear Conscience

TODAY’S VERSE
Cling to your faith in Christ and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.
I Timothy 1:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If we want to live a joyful Christian life, we must keep our conscience clear. We have a large propensity toward rationalizing away our attitudes and behavior. We will do anything to keep from feeling guilt over something we have done. We bury any negative emotions, and before we know it, our conscience has been seared. But the truth is we end up paying a toll for our lack of repentance. Like the person in today’s passage, our faith becomes shipwrecked. This isn’t what God intended. He made us to enjoy His grace. Christ is the perfect sacrifice for our sins, and His blood shed on Calvary has made it possible to have our conscience clear for all of eternity. All He asks is that we repent, confess our sins to Him, and accept His forgiveness and unconditional love. What is it that has alienated you from God? Today, bring it to God. Confess it and ask His forgiveness. For your own sake, keep your conscience clear.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father help me keep my conscience clear with You. Convict me of sin, and by Your grace, lead me to repentance. Thank You, that when I confess my sins, You are faithful and willing to forgive me of every transgression.
AMEN

Overwhelmed

TODAY’S VERSE
I cry out to the Lord; I plead for the Lord’s mercy. I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles. When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn.
Psalms 142:1-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever felt overwhelmed? I talk to people every day who feel that way. Divorce, hunger, disease, addictions, homelessness, debt, trauma, every day, people come to our church for help. And it should be that way. The church is God’s representative on earth. We should be telling everyone that God deeply cares about their personal affairs. David knew this. He was overwhelmed with life and all the challenges it had for him, yet he knew he could turn to the Lord. He cried out to God and pleaded for mercy. And God listened. Jeremiah attests to this. In Lamentations 3:22-24 Jeremiah writes, “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” What an overwhelming truth. God’s faithful love NEVER ends, and His mercies NEVER cease. I can’t even begin to get my brain around that. And the beauty is, every morning I wake up, God is there, with all His love and mercy waiting for me. Today, when you need to, cry out to God. Pour out your complaints to Him. Tell Him all about your troubles. He has a new day of mercy and love waiting for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am so glad I can come before You and share all my burdens. I am so grateful for Your mercy and faithfulness. Thank You that they never cease but are new every morning. Praise You, Lord.
AMEN

Oblivious To God’s Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Every time I visit Southern California, I am overwhelmed by the number of people I meet there who seem oblivious to the fact that they live in paradise. The mountains, sun, and surf are all around them, but they don’t see it. All they see is the everyday struggles of life. It is like that with God’s grace. We can get so bogged down with life that we don’t see all the grace that God has brought into our lives. Not so with the Apostle John. Instead John starts out his Gospel with an overwhelming appreciation for the grace that God has for us. He writes that we have all received grace from God manifested in “one gracious blessing after another.” He introduces this manifesto of grace in contrast to the Law that was given through Moses. Moses gave us the Law, but Jesus gave us God’s grace. This grace was manifested in God’s unfailing love and faithfulness toward us through the death and resurrection of Christ. What about you? How is your life? Are you experiencing God’s unfailing love? Are you aware of His many blessings? Do you appreciate His faithfulness toward you? Or have you been like the person walking a few miles from the beach, totally unaware of all its beauty and serenity? Today, stop and take the time to consciously acknowledge God’s many blessings given to you. Rejoice in His wonderful grace and faithfulness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for taking Your love and faithfulness for granted. Thank You for Your unfailing love and grace toward me.
AMEN

My Own Eye

TODAY’S VERSE
And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t agree with everything Freud wrote. There is, however, one of his observations that I think has some truth to it. Freud wrote about “projection,” the action of pointing out faults in others that we have ourselves.” Have you ever caught yourself criticizing someone and suddenly realized that you exhibit the same behavior? Jesus warned us about pointing out other people’s faults and ignoring our own. He said not to point out the little failings in other people while we have huge issues to deal with in our own lives. He mastered the use of hyperbole with the comparison of a speck in another person’s eye while we have this massive beam in our own. How funny this must have sounded to His audience, yet how true! We often take offense at other’s shortcomings when we have glaring inconsistencies in our own lives. Today, let us examine ourselves. Let us come before God and ask Him to point out our own “sins” and deal with them before we worry about someone else’s behavior.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for judging others. Help me to bring myself to you and allow Your Holy Spirit to work on my behavior. Lord, make me more like You.
AMEN

Get Right With God

TODAY’S VERSE
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
Romans 3:22-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Are you right with God? This is a serious question, yet most of us don’t spend much time thinking about it. Somewhere along the line, we have developed our own theory of how to be right with God. It usually involves doing some good, at least more good than we think we have done wrong. But the Bible tells of a different plan. It talks of a God who loves us and has made a way that we can be forgiven. It shares how receiving Christ as our personal Savior will bring us into right standing with Him. By putting our faith in the sacrifice of His son, Jesus, on the cross, we become God’s child and are born again into His family. This brings us into a whole new relationship with God, and we are made right with Him. Today, you can have this relationship. Accept Christ as your personal Savior, ask Him to forgive your sins, and make you His child. Put your faith in Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross for you and you will have a right relationship with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I accept Christ’s death on the cross for me and ask You to forgive all my sins. I accept Christ as my Savior, and put my faith in Him. Take my life and help me live it for You.
AMEN
