Come Boldly

TODAY’S VERSE
Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. – So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 2: 18; 4:16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life has stress. It begins when we are born and continues up unto the day God takes us home. God knew this, so He created us to be resilient, returning to peace and joy from painful emotions. How is this done? By turning to Jesus. He knows our stress. We can bring it to Him. Jesus, who Himself went through trials, suffering, and testing, is “able to help us when we are being tested!” This is why the author suggests that we come boldly to God with our deepest needs. Today you can be resilient. You can bring your stress to Him and “receive the mercy and grace to help you when you need it the most.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, thank You for Your grace, mercy, and love. Help me to come boldly to Your throne and receive the help I need when I need it the most.
AMEN

Help My Unbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
“Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” “What do you mean, If I can?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
Mark 9:22-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times do I question God? I come up against a wall, and I start to doubt. At first, it seems like it is a doubt of God’s ability. I am like the person in today’s verse, “Have mercy on us and help us if you can.” But do I really doubt His power? I believe in a God who can. I have read the Bible. I have read the accounts of God doing the miraculous. So, what do I doubt? If I am honest, I have to admit that I doubt God’s desire to help me. I suspect the depth and power of God’s love. The father was asking for mercy. He knew that God had the ability to be merciful. Perhaps what he was really asking was, “Be merciful if you can find it in your heart to do it.” It was more a question of God’s will than His ability. And I wonder which a more significant offense to God is? That I doubt His power or I doubt His desire? I seem to doubt God’s love for me more than I do His ability to do great and mighty things. Either way, I find myself in conflict and must cry out to God, saying the same thing the father did, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” Today, might we search our hearts and believe both in God’s ability and desire.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I believe but help my unbelief. Teach me more about You and Your great heart and desire so I can believe You for great and mighty things.
AMEN

Wait On The Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.
Psalms 27:14 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is hard to delay gratification. We want what we want when we want it. We have yearned so long. So, what do we do when it seems that God is silent and we can’t wait? David knew. He wrote, “Be strong and take heart.” Take heart is to be courageous emotionally and mentally. David is calling on us to be strong and brave and use all the patience and strength we have to persevere. Then he calls upon us to “take heart.” When everything in us is screaming for action, crying for resolution, and we have the accelerator pushed to the floor, we need to stop, take a deep breath and calm ourselves. We need to refocus on what is true and reconnect with God. It is in that moment, we take heart and allow God to help us regulate our emotions back to peace and joy. Today we have choices. He is here! Choose to be strong, wait for the Lord; and take heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You that You know my situation. You know my needs. Help me gain strength from this and to take heart. Teach me to wait on You and trust You to provide for me in ways that only You can. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

God Hears Me

TODAY’S VERSE
But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears.
Psalms 18:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love hope. I need hope. Every day is new, and so are the challenges. And there are a lot of things we can do to help ourselves get through the morass of issues and concerns that face us. There are a lot of different techniques and systems that will help us—new ways of thinking, new tools. But one thing surpasses every coping mechanism, every strategy, every technique, every method of problem-solving. It is our relationship with God. David knew this. He was a doer. David knew how to solve problems, yet when he was in severe crises, there was one place he went to over and over again. He went to God. David went to the arms of his good shepherd and cried out his heart. And God heard him. He writes, “Yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears.” His cries reached the ears of Heaven. So will yours. Today, don’t stop whatever is helping you but add to it the one thing that can make all the difference. In all your striving, add hope. Cry out to the Lord, and you will reach His ears.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I come to You. I come and present all my needs, all my concerns. I cannot make it without You. I cry out knowing You hear me. Comfort me even today, Lord. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

In The Light Of God’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
Remember me in the light of your unfailing love, for you are merciful, O LORD.
Psalms 25:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So much of our negative behavior is the result of false beliefs about ourselves. To sin or to be caught in sin only confirms these negative beliefs or lies that we already have. And the pain of being reminded of how we perceive ourselves causes us to put on masks or act religious – anything but let others see who we believe ourselves to be. But is that really who we are? God does not think so. He is not the one who has called you a loser, no good, damaged goods, or a mistake. God knows exactly who you are, and He loves you. How? He remembers you in the light of His unfailing love. Today, go and do likewise. See yourself and others through the eyes of God’s unfailing love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, how I long to love like You. Not just loving others, but loving myself as well. Thank You for Your mercy, Your grace, and Your unconditional love toward me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Christ’s Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love how the peace of Christ and thankfulness go together. Heartache, suffering, disappointment causes much pain. Paul knew this from being in prison, shipwrecked, starving, stoned, left for dead, and being hunted down like a criminal. And yet, through the peace of knowing Christ, Paul was able to give thanks. And why did giving thanks matter? Because giving thanks is the key to returning to joy from painful emotions and circumstances. It is handing over the steering wheel to someone else more capable than driving when we are under so much duress. And so today, give it all to Christ. Come to Him who can provide you with peace even when thanksgiving seems so far away. His peace will comfort. His peace will sustain. His peace will return you to joy and a thankful heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, it is hard to give thanks in all things. I need Your peace, that passes all understanding, to rule in my heart. Come in the power of Your Holy Spirit and fill me where I cannot fill myself. In Jesus Name, I give you thanks.
AMEN

Move In Closer

TODAY’S VERSE
And Peter followed at a distance.
Luke 22:54 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Is that how your spiritual life seems? Jesus was taken away by an angry mob. Most of the disciples scattered in fear. Peter, too was fearful, but at least he decided to follow Jesus, albeit at a distance. Fear does that. We become consumed with it. We think of the past and our failures, and as a result, we look to the future with more pessimism. This worry and fear cause us to miss the present closeness of the Lord. We don’t give up our faith, but its relevance to influence the immediate is lost in all our anxiousness. Today decide to move in closer to Jesus. He has not abandoned you. He has not turned His back. Peter failed to remember what Jesus had told him only hours earlier. “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail.” Jesus also intercedes for you. There is no reason to keep at a distance. Instead, you can do what the author of Hebrews tells us to do. He writes, “Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I confess I have been following You at a distance. I have let fear, doubt, and worry take the place of my faith. I come today in obedience, boldly to Your throne and ask for Your mercy and Your grace. Thank You for interceding for me. Thank You that You have promised to help me when I need it the most.
AMEN

Walk In The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
You have kept my feet from slipping. So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.
Psalms 56:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It makes a difference where you walk. I’ve hiked in many different terrains, in all kinds of weather, but the hardest of all was along a mountain path in the dark. There is nothing more treacherous than walking along a cliff when it is slippery and pitch dark. Some of our team tried to make it and slipped down the side of the mountain. Life can be that way too. How many times does it feel we are on a slippery path in the dark? All around us is dangerous, but we can’t see the path. David knew what that felt like, but he cried out to God. Today we have a choice. We can keep slipping trying to make it on our own, or we can do what David did. He decided to trust God and walk in His presence. He chose to walk in God’s life-giving light. You can too. Come to God today; He will stop you from slipping. He will lead you from the darkness into His life-giving light.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Father, how often I end up on a slippery path in the dark. Thank You for loving me and providing a way out. I come to You now and ask that You keep me from slipping. Help me today to walk in the awareness of Your presence, in Your life-giving light.
AMEN

Less disbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder.
Luke 24:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There were reports that Jesus had risen from the dead, and the disciples found it very disturbing. It was one thing to see Jesus raise Lazarus from a tomb, but Jesus from the crucifixion? His death was so brutal, so hateful, and now they feared for their own lives. Perhaps the most disturbing was the “How?” questions echoing in their heads. “How could someone who loved so much die so despised? How could someone so supernatural die so naturally? And so, they had a hard time believing. Even when Jesus “showed up” in the Upper Room, they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Aren’t we the same way? We hear of a miracle or witness one, and don’t we react with disbelief and wonder at the same time? Where did this unbelief come from? We need to be more like the man to whom Jesus said, “Everything is possible for one who believes.” The man turned to Jesus and said, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Today, choose to have less disbelief and more joy and wonder.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my unbelief. Help me be filled with more joy and wonder at all You are and do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Perfect peace

TODAY’S VERSE
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Every day is a new day. It is a do-over. That means that today you can choose to move toward peace. You do this by trusting God, trusting that no matter how you feel, no matter what the circumstances that God can still give you peace. He promises. Now peace may not take away the problems you are facing. Peace may not change any consequences you have or change the events of the past. But the peace that God offers passes our understanding. It keeps our hearts and mind. It supersedes our circumstances. It brings hope where there seems to be no hope. Today, come to God, fix your thoughts on Him, trust Him, and He will fill your heart with peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, you know my heart. You know my circumstances. You know my needs. I come to You today and am fixing my thoughts on You. I ask for Your peace to fill my heart and mind. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
AMEN
