God’s Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
Psalms 27:4 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to get in a rut and seek second best. It can be that way in our Christian experience. We get trapped seeking the “results” of knowing “about” God instead of the joy and peace of “knowing” God. We turn our Christian walk into rituals, behaviors, and experiences that bring us some sort of security that all is well instead of knowing Him and the peace that He can give. In his book “The Pressure’s Off” Larry Crabb writes, “You, therefore, live with uncertainty and pressure, and you demand to know the way to live that will make your life work as you want. You maneuver; you do not trust. You negotiate; you do not worship. You analyze and interpret to gain control over what happens; you do not depend. You seek the better life of God’s blessings over the better hope of God’s presence.” Today, might we seek to know and enjoy God’s presence over anything else.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I have sought Your blessings more than Your presence. I have sought what I can gain from knowing about You instead of knowing You. Help me, Father, Your presence is the blessing I seek.
AMEN

His Grace Is Sufficient

TODAY’S VERSE
But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you.”
II Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I never get used to God’s grace! Grace is God’s “unmerited favor” toward us who believe. In other words, He lavishes His love on you and me for no other reason than He “wants to.” His love is perfect. God’s grace is His purposeful manifestation of perfect love toward us. Paul came upon a tremendous burden in his life and sought relief from God, but instead of getting his request, God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you!” He asked for relief from a situation, but he got so much more. He received grace from God that was sufficient to meet his every need. In his classic book, “Addiction and Grace” Gerald May writes, “Grace is the invincible advocate of freedom and the absolute expression of perfect love. – For Christians, grace is the dynamic outpouring of God’s loving nature that flows into and through creation in an endless self-offering of healing, love, illumination, and reconciliation. It is a gift that is often given in spite of our intentions and errors. At such times, when grace is so clearly given unrequested, uninvited, even undeserved, there can be no authentic response but gratitude and awe.” Today, may you be conscious of His grace toward you. May you sense it in His attention, mercy, peace, strength, and love He directs toward you. Today, might you truly hope in this, His grace will indeed be sufficient for whatever will come your way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how amazing is Your grace! Thank You that no matter what comes my way today, You promised that Your grace toward me will be sufficient enough to see me through. I praise You for Your grace of love, of forgiveness, of mercy, of peace, of joy, of strength, and of provision. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Supernatural Love

TODAY’S VERSE
He has told us about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you.
Colossians 1:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We get so used to hearing that we are supposed to love others that we think we must do it ourselves. But in today’s verse, we glimpse where the real power comes from. God’s Spirit in us strives to guide us, teach us, and create a love for others in our hearts. Why should that be so surprising? After all, the Apostle John reminds us that God is not only the source of love. He is love. God Himself manifested in His Spirit in us moves us to love. Jesus modeled this God-driven kind of love. John writes, “We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.” So today, love others. But don’t do it in your own power. Ask God to give you a Spirit-led love for those around you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit of God, reach deep into my heart and birth in me a love for others that only You can produce. I want to love as Jesus did. Fill me with Supernatural love, I pray.
AMEN

Remember

TODAY’S VERSE
But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his counsel.
Psalms 106:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a difference between memory lapse and apathy. We can be sincere about something and forget a few details. However, if we fail to show up, be involved, or forget information repeatedly, then our sincerity is in doubt. It can be this way with Christ. It starts with other things choking out our passion, emotion, or excitement about Christ and then leads to a lack of interest in or concern for things of God.  In the Old Testament, the people of God allowed themselves to forget what God had done in the past. The lessons of faith that they should have incorporated into their lives were never cultivated. It wasn’t long before they began living like God didn’t exist at all. What can you do to protect your soul from this spiritual apathy? How can you take deliberate steps to preserve your Christian walk? You do it by being disciplined in your spirituality. It is your remembrance of His promises, the recalling of the many miracles you have witnessed, the active reading of the scriptures, and spending time with God seeking His counsel that will keep you from falling. These spiritual disciplines will protect you when facing temptation. They will be your guide when you have hard decisions to make. May the remembrance of all He has done for you, give you the confidence you need to continue to follow Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me remember all You have done for me so I can seek Your counsel and allow You to guide me as I go through this day.
AMEN

A False God

TODAY’S VERSE
“You will not surely die,’ the serpent said to the woman. ‘For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:4-5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Since Adam and Eve, humanity has been tempted to think they could become a “god.” However, in his book, “The Gift Of Being Yourself,” David Benner makes a fascinating observation. He points out that in the Garden of Eden, it was not the act of trying to be like God that was a sin. It was the act of thinking they could be like God without God. Truth is we are commanded to be like Christ. We are to emulate the characteristics of God, such as love, mercy, and justice. But we are never told that we can do that without the help of God and His Holy Spirit. David Benner writes, “Adam and Eve wanted to be God without God, a likeness that was based on independence rather than surrender. – What we get when we choose a way of being that is separate from God is the life of the false self. – The false self is the tragic result of trying to steal something from God that we did not have to steal. Had we dared to trust God’s goodness; we would have discovered that everything we could ever most deeply long for would be ours in God. Trying to gain more than the everything God offers; we end up with less than nothing. Rejecting God, we end up with a nest of lies and illusions. Displacing God, we become a god unto our self. We become a false self.” I am so glad Jesus came. He said, “I am the way, truth, and life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” He came so we could know God. It is His truth, His life that enables us to be more like Him. Today, examine yourself. Are you following Christ and letting Him influence who you are, or are you busy creating your own life apart from God?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for all the times I have tried to set myself up as my own God. Today, I ask You to speak to my heart and help me get back on track with You. Guide me in everything I do so I will become the person You want me to be. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Spiritual Victory

TODAY’S VERSE
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.
I Peter 5:8-9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a spiritual reality that we need to be aware of. Peter warns us that we are in a battle and that “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” The good news is that God has given us everything for the victory. He has given us His Holy Spirit to guide us, His word to teach us, and His presence to protect us. As a result, we can obey Peter when he tells us to be self-controlled and alert and to resist Satan standing firm in the faith. James tells us that if we “resist the devil,” the devil will flee from us. So, today, let us resist the lies of Satan, stand firm in our faith in God, and be victorious.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that the Spiritual battle we are in has already been won. Thank You for providing all I need for victory. Help me today to stand firm on Your promises, to be self-controlled and alert, and to resist the schemes of Satan.
AMEN

A Little Faith Counts

TODAY’S VERSE
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’”
Matthew 17:20 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Faith can move mountains. But how much faith? Today’s passage reminds us that even the smallest amount of faith counts. It comforts me that Jesus was talking to people with very little faith and Not chiding them. Instead, He loves them. He says, “Because you have just a little faith let me encourage you!” He then uses the “mustard” seed to illustrate how even a “little” faith can be used. He chose the mustard seed because it was one of the smallest seeds he could find. In another passage, He said, “But when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree.” The seed was like a speck of dirt and yet Jesus insisted that even a little speck of faith can be used by God. He concludes, “Nothing will be impossible for you!” We need faith. When all seems hopeless we reach out in faith. When our back is up against the wall, we cry out in faith. When unsure of what to do, we step out in faith. As we do, God will be there. Don’t be discouraged with little faith. Simply plant it in today’s soil like a mustard seed and let God do the rest.

TODAY’S PRAYER
God, You know how feeble my faith can be. I am so glad that You can take it and use it. As You do, please help my faith grow so I may believe You for even greater things. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Christian Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God has a vested interest in our maturity. He has saved us from the penalty of our sins and has set us apart for His service. He is involved in our lives, protecting, encouraging, teaching, and guiding us. He has given us apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to prepare us for His service with the ultimate goal of becoming “mature, attaining the fullness of Christ.” But will we follow? Will we listen? Will we do what it takes to mature in Christ? In his book, “Living From The Heart Jesus Gave You,” Dr. James Wilder suggests that we have a role to play in our maturity in Christ. He writes, “Now the job of maturity is quite another matter. While God is certainly instrumental in guiding and blessing our maturation, it is our job, bestowed upon us way back in the garden, to mature. Maturity is not a spiritual gift, nor is it a by-product of salvation. It is something we as Christians must work on our entire lives.” So, what are you doing to mature in Christ? Are you feeding your soul on the word of God? Are you learning from teachers and preachers? Are you in fellowship with other Christians who hold you accountable for your growth in Christ? Are you spending time with God in prayer and meditation? Today, take some steps to mature in your spiritual life with Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me mature in You. Help me seek You more, know You more, and love You more. Help me today and every day to do something that will help me mature in You.
AMEN

Worshipping God

TODAY’S VERSE
I come to your altar, O Lord, singing a song of thanksgiving and telling of all your wonders. I love your sanctuary, Lord, the place where your glorious presence dwells.
Psalms 26:6-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David knew what it was to worship God. Even as royalty, as busy as he was, as complicated as his life was, he did not forget to spend personal time with God. He remembered being a shepherd out in the fields, worshipping God with songs and praise. Years later, David wrote today’s passage, sharing about the same kind of worship. He writes, “I come to your altar, O Lord, singing a song of thanksgiving and telling of all your wonders. I love your sanctuary, Lord, the place where your glorious presence dwells.” It is easy to get in a rut learning all about God but never spending time knowing Him. It is great to love Bible study. Who doesn’t love an inspiring sermon? It challenges us to live for God. But in all the learning and doing, we also must love spending time worshipping and praising Him. Today, spend time in His presence. Come to His altar and spend time in praise and communion with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I love Your word. I love serving You. But in all my haste, I must confess, I often forget to love You. I haven’t spent the time in Your presence. I haven’t taken enough time to worship You. Forgive me, Lord. Today, may I worship You and spend time in Your presence.
AMEN

He Will Answer

TODAY’S VERSE
I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God. Bend down and listen as I pray. Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways.
Psalms 17:6-8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some things only God can do. That is why we need to come to Him. When we do, we must put our faith in His ability to answer our prayers. In his book, “Living From The Heart,” Dr. James Wilder elaborates, “God is the only one who can ultimately save us, sanctify us, and deliver us from evil. –  When we let God do His work, things happen rather perfectly. But when we presumptuously take over His territory, things tend to crumble all so quickly.” Today, like David, may we pray to God because we know He will answer. If we do, He will show us “His unfailing love in wonderful ways.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your unfailing love. You have shown it to me in so many ways. Today, I bring you my needs and all my cares. I come to You because I know You will answer. Your grace is amazing, Your love never-ending, Your power all-sufficient.
AMEN
