Abide In His Love

TODAY’S VERSE

As the Father has loved me, I also have loved you: abide in my love.
John 15:9 (DARBY)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Where do you abide? According to Merriam-Webster, “abide” means continuing in a place, to sojourn. In this situation, Jesus refers to continuing in a particular state of mind. This gives us a lot of choices. It is not uncommon to find ourselves having painful emotions like fear, anger, disgust, bitterness, or doubt. But do we have to stay there? Are we choosing to abide in that emotional state? Instead, as Jesus abided in the love of the Heavenly Father, He invites us to do the same with His love. He offers His own life as an example. What a picture. You can feel the love bond that God the Father has with His Son. And as you read about Jesus, you can sense that Jesus has the same love for us. Is there a better place to abide? Is there a better place to call home than the loving arms of Jesus? Today, find your rest in Him. Find that peace that passes all understanding. Abide in Jesus and the incredible love He has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your love. Thank You for allowing me to abide in Your love and experience all the peace, joy, and faith that comes with it. Help me abide there today.
AMEN

Receiving His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way.
Colossians 1:10 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a fine line between doing good to earn someone’s affection and doing good because you already have it. Take God. He created us out of love. He has redeemed us out of love. We don’t have to earn His favor. We become His child through the acceptance of His finished work on the Cross. From then on, it is love and gratitude that motivate us. But some of us have a hard time receiving that kind of unconditional love. What kind of marriage would it be if we had to constantly earn our spouse’s love? Wouldn’t it be a shame to have a spouse who loves you so much, and yet, because you couldn’t receive that love, you constantly feel as if you must earn it? It is the same way with God. Yes, Paul asks us to “live a life worthy of the Lord” and to “live in a way that pleases God.” But nowhere does it intimate that we should live this way to earn His love. Instead, the Apostle John wrote that we should love God because He first loved us. Today, rejoice in the love that the Father has for you. Love God because His love for you is secure.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your love. Thank You that I don’t need to earn it. I don’t have to live under fear and condemnation; rather, I can simply enjoy Your favor. Help me to truly receive Your kindness and Your abiding love.
AMEN

Be A Blessing

TODAY’S VERSE
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What would you do if you were given two potions, one that could cure cancer and the other that would make people deathly sick? You would give every person living with cancer you could find the cure and, no doubt, do away with the poison. Yet what do we do with our words? With each sentence, there is the potential to cure or destroy. We can use our tongue to heal those hurting, bring joy to a broken heart, or give hope to those suffering. We could also choose to use unwholesome words that tear down, wound, and destroy those that get in our way. James writes, “Sometimes it (the tongue) praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!” Today, be careful with what you say. Use the wonderful gift of language as a blessing to others, not a curse.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me use my tongue as a blessing. Direct my mouth with Your power and help me use my words to share love and peace with others.
AMEN

Discernment

TODAY’S VERSE
O Lord, listen to my cry; give me the discerning mind you promised.
Psalms 119:169 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We need many things in life, but one of the most important is discernment. Things are seldom the way they appear. How important is it, then, to know the mind of God when we are in various situations? Solomon told us in Proverbs that we need to seek wisdom. We need to go after it like we would golden treasure. James writes that if we lack wisdom, all we need to do is ask God for it. What a gift. What love that God would not leave us here clueless! The Psalmist asks God to “give me the discerning mind you promised.” God promised, are you asking? Today, stop and seek the wisdom of God. Ask Him for discernment in all you do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I need Your wisdom. How I need Your understanding. I desire Your discernment to see me through this day. Thank You that You will give me the discerning mind you promised.
AMEN

Lord, Open My Eyes

TODAY’S VERSE
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber – The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
Psalms 121:2, 3, 7, 8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I once saw a little boy crying hysterically, afraid that his father abandoned him in a large crowd of people. I remember thinking how odd it was because his father was standing right next to him. It was at a zoo, and the boy was focused on the fountain before him. In his concentration, he lost focus on his father, so when he stopped looking at the fountain, he thought he was alone. He felt frightened, and, in his despair, he cried with his eyes closed. As he cried, he was not aware of his father’s presence. It was not until the father picked the child up that he opened his eyes and returned to joy. How often are we like that little child? Something frightens us. It could be a confrontation, an anxious thought, or worse, some dread of future things. Faith seems to go out the window when our mind gets in that state. It is as if we stepped out of the presence of God when, in reality, what we did was shut our eyes. The Psalmist decided to go into his day with eyes wide open. He writes, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble!”  He affirms his faith by believing, “The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” Today, open your eyes. Wipe away your tears. Look up; the Lord is here! He will watch over you and keep you from harm. Put your trust in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, make me conscious of Your presence so I will put my faith in Your precious promises. The promise that You will watch over me and protect me. The promise that You love me. Help me today, to open my eyes to Your power and love.
AMEN

Realization

TODAY’S VERSE
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
John 14:20 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
A realization is different than assuming something. You can think you “know” how difficult something may be and later explain, “I never realized how much work it was going to be!” Knowing can be academic or theoretical, whereas realization is experiential knowledge. Actual realization is an awakening. It is an “aha” moment. We can “know” all about Christ but realize His presence is something totally different. Jesus explains that because He rose again from the dead, we should realize He is equal with God the Father. Jesus also says that because we believe He has a special relationship with God the Father, we should realize He has a special relationship with us. As God the Father is “in” Jesus, Jesus is “in” us. Here is the crux of the matter. When will we start living as if the Almighty God of the Universe is living in us? When are we going to realize all that is ours in Christ? It is not too late. Today, meditate on God’s love for you and His desire to live in and through you. Ask Him to help you realize what that should mean and how you should live.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for your presence in my life. Thank You for making me Your child. I pray I may fully realize what it means to have You alive in me.
AMEN

Holy Spirit

TODAY’S VERSE
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil,’ which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.
Galatians 5:16-17

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The fight between good and evil can get old. This is especially true when we are talking about our behavior. Which of us has not experienced the struggle between the Holy Spirit inside us and what Paul calls our “sinful nature”? Paul points out the difference in outcomes between both. He writes, “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. – But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The point is clear. Paul says that we need to let the Holy Spirit guide our lives to see the Spiritual results that our heart desires. Today, yield to the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to assist you in everything you do. Focus on the fruit of the Holy Spirit and watch it grow.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit alive in my heart. I confess my struggle with my sinful nature and ask that the fruit from fellowship with the Holy Spirit will grow in my life.
AMEN

Seek Him First

TODAY’S VERSE
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33 (NASB)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It’s easy for us to assume God’s will instead of asking Him for it. The truth is that God’s ways are not always our ways. Jesus said to seek His kingdom and righteousness before anything else. So, if we want to live out God’s will, we must seek God first. A quarterback has the same goal as his coach. They both want to win the game. But the Coach is better versed in the game. He has more experience and a more comprehensive view of the whole game. If the quarterback is going to do his best, he needs to work in harmony with the coach. How much more should we align our behavior and attitudes with God Almighty? A hurtful situation, a wayward son, a sudden illness, a loss of a job. Life has many twists and turns. When they come, stop and seek God. Let Him know your thoughts, your apprehensions, your fears, and your frustrations. Come to Him, seek Him first, and He will direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess I do “my own thing” so often. I do not take the time to know your will. I just assume I am doing the “right” thing. Forgive me. Help me stop when tempted to run in a certain direction. Help me to seek You first.
AMEN

The Lord’s Face

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
At first, this just seems like a benediction you hear after Sunday church. A nice platitude to give you some hope throughout the week. But when you stop to read this passage, it becomes a tremendous reality you must consider. Why? Because believing this passage can change your life. It starts by stating that God wants to bless and keep you. What a wonderful reality. You can come to God knowing that His full intent is to bless you. But then the author adds a very personal twist. He is saying that God wants to make His face shine upon you. This means that God Almighty is fully aware of you and is turning His face deliberately toward you so you can make complete contact with Him. What an invitation. Today, right now, God has turned His face toward you. His goal is to be gracious toward you and give you peace. He is looking, will you look back? Stop now, experience the presence of the Lord.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for taking such a personal interest in me. I want to know You better. Please be gracious toward me, help me experience Your face shining upon me, and give me peace.
AMEN

What Do You Really Need?

TODAY’S VERSE
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
II Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Need. That is certainly a relative word. We have taken the word “need” and have turned it into everything from a wishlist to a whim. Larry Crabb addresses this in his book, “The Pressure’s Off.” He writes about what we really need. He writes, “Nothing wrong with desiring safe airplane flights and warm marriages and a decent income. But none of these things, none of our hopes for a “Better Life of Blessings”, represents God’s priority agenda – We need only to be safe from any power that opposes God’s agenda for our lives.” And what agenda do we need? Dr. Crabb shares three needs that God wants for us: radical forgiveness, supernatural love, and spiritual might. The good news is that God can grant you these needs. Through His grace, God provides all of the forgiveness, love, and might you will need to be involved in His good work. Today, lay aside those “other needs” that you think are so important and ask God to meet your real needs of forgiveness, love, and spiritual might.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need You and Your spiritual provisions of forgiveness, love, and spiritual might more than anything else in the world. Help meet my real needs today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
