A Friend Of God

TODAY’S VERSE
He has brought you into the very presence of God, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.
Colossians 1:22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What you believe about yourself is key to the way you live. And what you believe God thinks about you can help the way you believe about yourself. That is why Paul wrote his letter to the Colossian church. He wanted us to know who we are. Paul starts, saying that we were the very enemies of God, separated by our evil thoughts and actions. But just as quickly, he shares that God, through Christ’s death on the cross, has now accepted us as His friends. In their book “TrueFaced,” the authors say it this way, “As a maturing Christian, I no longer define myself by my sin or the sin committed against me, but by who God declared me to be.” And what has God declared about you? He has declared that you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him as His friend. Today, let this reality sink deep into your heart. Let it fill you with joy and peace as you live for Him. You are God’s friend!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for declaring me holy and blameless as I stand before You as Your friend. Thank You that through the death and resurrection of Christ, Your Son, I am Your child, completely loved and forgiven of all my sins. Help me to live in this reality.
AMEN

No Burden

TODAY’S VERSE
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love this passage. The Lord bids us come and rest. How different is that? It is the complete opposite of striving. You know, striving to “earn” God’s love, or worse, “keep it” as if God is some fickle tyrant. Nothing could be farther from the heart of God. Jesus knew we would be weary and carry heavy burdens. It is part of living in this world. But He never meant that living for God would be the cause of the burden. No, He said, if we would take His teachings and live them, we would find rest for our souls. In “Desiring God’s Will,” Dr. David Benner writes, “Hearing the invitation, everything within me wants to draw near and receive the gift of love that Jesus represents – not out of obligation but out of a soul-aching desire. And each time I do, my heart is slowly but progressively more aligned with the heart of God – God’s desires becoming my desires and God’s will becoming my will.” So today, quit trying to earn His love. You already have it. Don’t strive to please Him so He won’t abandon You; he will never leave you. Today, rest in His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for not believing You. Forgive me for making a mockery out of Your unconditional love for me. Thank You that your love for me is real, I don’t have to earn it, it is not a burden. Help me rest in your love today.
AMEN

Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. – May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.
II Peter 1:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love Peter’s faith in Christ. He went from a follower of Christ to an apostle. And in his eyes, Jesus went from an itinerant Rabbi to Messiah to his Savior and Lord. What was his secret? How did he grow in his knowledge and experience of Christ? It was God’s grace. The very favor of God was given to him so he could grow in the Lord. The same is given to you. God has poured His knowledge into your mind and heart through the person of the Holy Spirit. Why? Because He has chosen to be gracious toward you. Today, accept His Divine assistance. Invite God to “give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your grace. I need Your Holy Spirit to give me more and more grace and peace as I grow in my knowledge of You. Help me, guide me, instruct me, I pray.
AMEN

Give Praise

TODAY’S VERSE
But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore, you did not desert them.
Nehemiah 9:17 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The story of Nehemiah in the Old Testament is about the redemption of God’s people. The people were scattered. They had disobeyed God, and He allowed calamity to come upon them. But in God’s timing, He called Nehemiah to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so the people could come back together as a nation. When they were done rebuilding the walls, they had a great celebration. Nehemiah writes, “Standing on the stairs were the Levites—who called with loud voices to the LORD their God and said: ‘Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. – Our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love.” They celebrated God, who is forgiving, gracious, and compassionate. What do you celebrate about God? What is it about God that brings a smile to your face and joy to your heart? If you can’t think of anything, then think on this. God has never given up on you; He will never desert you; He is always slow to anger and will always keep His covenant of love with you. Today, take pause and give praise.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your gracious love toward me. Thank You for Your forgiveness and compassion. Thank You that You will never desert me but will keep Your promise to always love me.
AMEN

Doing God’s Will

TODAY’S VERSE
Do the will of God with all your heart.
Ephesians 6:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You can do something half-heartedly, or you can give your total self to it. You can participate in something out of sheer obedience or because you are deeply passionate about it. Paul was asking the church members to do God’s will, but not just do it, do it with all their hearts. In his book, “Knowing God’s Will,” David Benner writes, “Only love was capable of empowering Jesus to choose God’s will over his own when faced with the agony of death. – Spiritual disciplines that emerge simply as acts of the will are likely to be self-serving and legalistic. What God desires is external actions that spring from inner longings for relationship and intimacy, for this is His desire for us. This was what the Father found in the heart of Jesus. And it is the motive that we can find in our life as we follow Jesus and live in His Spirit.” Today, ask God to birth in you a fresh desire to follow Him, deep love and intimacy with Him that directs the way you live. Today, “do the will of God with all your heart.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know You more and more so that I develop a more profound love for You. Then enable all my actions to come from the love that you birth in my heart.
AMEN

Divine Love

TODAY’S VERSE
Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside. I was so foolish and ignorant-I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you. Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.
Psalms 73:21-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Lies, false assumptions, and unfounded predictions can drive us to despair. The fear, anger, and sorrow they bring cause us to do questionable things. In today’s verse, the Psalmist was torn up inside. What he believed made him bitter, foolish, and even ignorant of God. However, when he came to his senses, he saw how bad he had been before God and repented. Have you been there? You know, those times when you think God should have given up on you? But please, let it sink in, God doesn’t give up! The wonderful truth is that God forgave the Psalmist. God comforted, counseled, and continued to guide him. The love he experienced from God caused him to write one of the most beautiful verses ever written about God. “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” Today, might this same reality sink deep into your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, my heart cries, “Hallelujah, what a Savior!” I know I don’t always live the way I should. I know many days my attitude is all wrong. But today, I know You forgive me. I know that You will never abandon me. I know that You are committed to my maturity. Help me remember this as I live out this day.
AMEN

My High Priest

TODAY’S VERSE
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:15-16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What you believe about God makes all the difference in the world. The author of Hebrews shares one of the most poignant views of God in all of Scripture. He uses the illustration of a High Priest who stands between God and us. But not a High Priest that has the same frailties as us. Instead, a High Priest who faced all the same testing as we do, but without sin. A High Priest who paid the price for our sins so we could come boldly to God the Father and receive His love and forgiveness. And who is this High Priest? It is Jesus. It is Jesus who has made it possible for us to know God. Possible to receive mercy and forgiveness. Possible to find God’s grace when we need it the most. So today, listen to the author of Hebrews and come boldly to Jesus. Come for His mercy. Come for His cleansing. Come for His forgiveness. Come for His grace. He is waiting.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, thank You for being my Great High Priest. Thank You for Your death on the cross. Thank You for forgiving me. I Praise and Worship You for all Your grace given to me.
AMEN

Do You Know God?

TODAY’S VERSE
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Isaiah 40:28-29 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
At first glance, you can read today’s passage and think that the author is asking a rhetorical question. Who hasn’t heard that the Lord God of the Universe is the everlasting God, creator of the ends of the earth? If you were going to believe in a God, wouldn’t you want an all-powerful one? No doubt, you would desire God to be the everlasting creator who never tires and has an understanding that is beyond our comprehension. But to be complete in your belief in God, you would need to understand that God is also compassionate to those in need, giving strength to the weary and helping those who are weak. It is this mighty, merciful God that Isaiah is asking about. He asks, “Do you not know? Have you not heard?” Otherwise, have you let the reality of this magnificent God change your life? It is by hoping in the LORD who loves you that you will renew your strength. Trusting the Almighty God who never tires of being merciful to you will cause you to soar on wings like eagles. Isaiah assures you will run and not grow weary; you will walk and not be faint. Today, put your faith and trust in our everlasting God, the creator of the earth, the God who never tires of being compassionate toward you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, how I praise You for who You are. You are everlasting, the creator of the earth. Thank You for caring for me and giving me strength.
AMEN

Don’t Worry

TODAY’S VERSE
Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.
Romans 12:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus warned us, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.” Life is, well, life. It comes with all the ups and downs. But we must remember what Jesus said next. He said, “But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” What comfort. This is why Paul could write to the church in Rome, urging them to rejoice in their hope. But not just a half-hearted hope. He said a hope that is confident in its outcome. With this confidence, he wrote that we could also be “patient in trouble.” This kind of patience comes out of the awareness that God is there and that He cares. That is why Paul finishes his instructions with, “Keep on praying.” God is greater than our worries. Today, when troubles come, be confident in your hope. Be patient and talk to God about your problems. He will guide you. He will comfort, He will give you strength.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that when troubles come, I can come near to You. I can be confident in my hope that You care, and will guide me and help me. Help me today to be patient and bring every worry to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Desire

TODAY’S VERSE
Then they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. – They shouted out their oath of loyalty to the LORD with trumpets blaring and rams’ horns sounding. All in Judah were happy about this covenant, for they had entered into it with all their heart. They earnestly sought after God, and they found him.
2 Chronicles 15:12, 14-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Desire is a critical factor in our walk with God. In today’s passage, we see how excited the Hebrews were about living for God. They entered into a covenant to know God with all their heart and soul. That is how God wants us to desire Him. He wants us to long for His fellowship. He wants us to desire Him above everything else. And the exciting fact is that God himself helps us with our desires. In “Desiring God’s Will,” David Brenner writes, “Hunger for God will not go unanswered, because it is a gift from God. Our longing is already an answer from our heart as it is stirred by God’s Spirit. No one who seeks God fails to find God, because she or he is already found by God. In seeking we are found. In longing we express God’s desire, God’s longing evoking our own.” John wrote, “We love him, because he first loved us.” How marvelous, how mysterious. We desire God because He desires us. Today, joyfully set your heart toward Him. Desire His fellowship, desire His love, desire His Lordship.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I desire to seek You with all my heart. I desire to know You, to love You, and to live for You. Help me to this end, I pray.
AMEN
