Spiritual Wisdom and Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
Colossians 1:9-10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Do you desire to live in a way that will always honor and please God? Do you want to produce every kind of good fruit with your life? These are high and lofty goals that Paul wrote for the church. But how do we achieve such spirituality? We do what Paul did. We pray and don’t stop praying that we would know God better and better, gaining spiritual wisdom and understanding. It is through knowing God in this deep and intimate way that we will live the life He desires for us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please give me spiritual wisdom and understanding so I can know You better and better, honoring and pleasing You. Help me produce the good fruit that You desire in my life. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Recorrect Your Course

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness.
Psalm 141:4

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever noticed that you can start something correctly, but over time, things change? It can get that way with life. I remember going across a big lake in a canoe. It was October cold and raining. The house was across on the other side of the lake, but you could barely see it. I started toward it, but it rained so hard that I couldn’t see it anymore. I panicked, wondering what was wrong. I finally looked way to my left, and there it was. The wind and waves had driven me off course. Even with all my paddling, I was going in the wrong direction. I had to recorrect my course. I had to do it several times in order to make it to warmth and shelter from the storm. It is easy to get off course in life. The waves and wind of everyday circumstances can take us where we don’t want to go. Today, come to God, get in the word, pray. Spend time recorrecting your course.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how my heart can drift from You. Help me today recorrect my course. I need You to navigate my life.
AMEN

Choices

TODAY’S VERSE
Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.
Joshua 24:15 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Choices can make all the difference in the world. Of course, not all choices are equal. It probably won’t matter much if you had meatloaf or fish for dinner. However, what you choose to commit your life to does. Jesus constantly challenged us about our commitments. We can measure our commitments by looking at what we consider important. Jesus said it this way, “Where our treasures are, there will our heart be also.” So what do we have to choose today? Will you choose things that matter? Will serving God permeate the choices you make? Given other options, will you choose God’s peace, joy, and love? Make choices based on the things that God values. Today, choose whom you will serve.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know that I don’t always make good choices, but today, I choose You. I choose to follow You. I pray that You will help me make the right choices.
AMEN

Holy Spirit

TODAY’S VERSE
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil,’ which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.
Galatians 5:16-17

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The fight between good and evil can get old. This is especially true when we are talking about our behavior. Which of us has not experienced the struggle between the Holy Spirit inside us and what Paul calls our “sinful nature”? Paul points out the difference in outcomes between both. He writes, “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. – But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The point is clear. Paul says that we need to let the Holy Spirit guide our lives to see the Spiritual results that our heart desires. Today, yield to the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to assist you in everything you do. Focus on the fruit of the Holy Spirit and watch it grow.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit alive in my heart. I confess my struggle with my sinful nature and ask that the fruit from fellowship with the Holy Spirit will grow in my life.
AMEN

Patience And Endurance

TODAY’S VERSE
Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.
Colossians 1:11

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In his letter to the Colossians, Paul admonishes the Christians to “live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way.” He then tells them how. He says to exercise “great endurance and patience.” Endurance and patience are pleasing to God. Having both is a lot easier when there is hope. When things seem to be going our way, it is easy to endure. It is during difficult situations where all seems lost, where hope is nowhere to be found, that we must trust God and be strengthened in a way that only He can do. We come to Him, with all His glorious might, and choose to deliberately be patient and endure. It is an act of faith, one that is pleasing to Him. Today, trust God and His power, put your situation into His hands, and choose to be patient and endure.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me trust in Your power and might and exhibit patience and endurance today in all I do.
AMEN

Direction

TODAY’S VERSE
Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.
Psalms 25:4-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are so many paths to choose from. Wouldn’t it be nice if we just had to make one turn and never had to ask for directions again? But that isn’t going to happen. Life has too many variables, and we are given free will. We were destined to make choices. The good news is we are not alone. We don’t have to make decisions all by ourselves. We can be like David. As a mighty warrior and later as King, David had to make many decisions. Although he had the right to decide whatever he wanted to, David knew that having God’s guidance was the only way to make good decisions. He prayed that God would show him the right path. David asked God to be specific and point out how he should go. God would guide Him by teaching David the truth. As David meditated on God’s word and character, he would put more trust in God. This trust would result in hope and direction. Today, you have many different directions you could take. Stop and commit your journey to Him. Ask God to guide and direct you in all you do and say. He will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I commit this day to You. You know all the decisions ahead of me. Grant me wisdom and show me the paths I should take. I put my hope and trust in You.
AMEN

He Is Our Guide

TODAY’S VERSE
I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.
Psalms 16:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever had a deeply complex situation way over your head, you were not sure what you would do, and then someone familiar with your situation showed you the way out? I’ve been blessed with a few guides in my day. Nothing is worse than being in a deep forest and not knowing where you are. In wilderness training, I was thankful to have a guide who knew every square inch of the deep forrest we were in. Life is like that. Every day has new challenges. When you think you know the terrain, you turn a corner, and “bam,” you don’t know where you are. Panic, frustration, doubt, and fear start to set in, and then you remember, “Why am I worried? The Lord is my guide!” And He is. David believed this. He knew what it was to depend on God. David certainly knew what it was to be in circumstances where he wasn’t sure which way to turn. So, he blessed the Lord, who was his guide. This same God who instructed him during the night will instruct you. Today, try it. Call out to God for wisdom, instruction, and help in all you do. He will be your guide.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, be my guide. I need Your wisdom, Your strength, Your guidance. Thank You, Lord, that You love me and long for me to come to You for help. I come now, Lord Jesus.
AMEN

Peace Not Control

TODAY’S VERSE
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Perfect peace. Just the thought of it calms my heart. It is a peace that comes from maturity. It is growing into peace from knowing God in deep and intimate ways. I used to think it was control. If I could control things, I would have peace. I must avoid those things from the past that haunt me. I must keep appearances and not let anyone know the real me. I must worry and try to control the future, so I am not a victim again. What a trap. And this lack of peace, this need for control, brings all its friends to my front doorstep. Anger, bitterness, jealousy, loneliness, despair, anxiety they all congregate waiting to get into my mind. How wrong I have been. The more I try to control, the more I need to control. Instead, with the peace from God in my heart, I no longer have to control. This is perfect peace. Today, trust in God. Bring Him all your control issues. He knows your situation. He knows your past and future. Fix your thoughts on Him and His wonderful all-providing love for you. Let Him give you a lasting, mature, and perfect peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You now. I want to experience your peace. I give up control and turn my situation, my life over to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, it’s not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me; I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can be better at my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship when we should be praying for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then wait to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life-changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest, and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You honestly and openly. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.
AMEN
