Are You Shining THe Light?

TODAY’S VERSE
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Matthew 5:14-15

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is the purpose of light? It is to invade the darkness. That’s right. We often fear that darkness is going to overcome us but the truth is darkness does not have power. It does not attack us. Darkness can only happen when there is an absence of light. So, what have we done with the light that God has given us? Do we put it on the hill so all can see? Do we go to the darkest places we can find and let the light of love and the gospel shine forth? No. Instead, we build our own islands of light, good for us but no others. We build our fortress in order to keep the darkness out when in truth there is enough light for everyone. We could prevent the darkness but we have hoarded the light. Might we hear God’s call – be GIVERS of the light! Rise up, use your spiritual gifts – give away the light – invade the world’s darkness. Today, give away hope, peace, love, joy, and God’s good news – GIVE AWAY THE LIGHT!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh, Father, Maker of Light, You have invaded my dark heart, but I am guilty of hoarding it. Forgive me. Help me to invade the darkness and give away Your light. Might all around be delivered from darkness!

Everything We Need For Life and Godliness

TODAY’S VERSE
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him.
II Peter 1:3 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times have we felt inadequate in a situation? If only there was something that could help us? It is easy to feel this way about our spiritual life. How can we live for God? How can we live this Christian life the way He wants us to? By ourselves, we can’t. But the good news is, “He has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” How? Through knowing Him and His promises. What a blessing! Capture the scope of what Peter is saying, he has “given us everything we need for life and Godliness!” Today, spend time and get to know God. Talk to Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. If you will spend time getting to know God, you will find that He does indeed have everything you need for life and godliness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I want to live the life You want me to, but I can’t do it by myself. I need You. I need Your promises. Reveal Yourself to me today and in the days to come, so I can get to know You more and more and live the life You desire for me.

We Need To Walk The Talk

TODAY’S VERSE
What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
James 2:14-18

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a world in such need, but we are so busy we don’t see it. We are so inwardly focused, so concerned about our own welfare, we don’t stop to help others. That is not the way of Christ! Our churches should be making huge differences in our communities, but we don’t. Often we are trying to be the best church in the community. But the author, Eric Swanson challenges us and says that instead, we should try to be the best church for and with the community. That is Christ’s way. When will this change? It can change TODAY if you and I decide to do something. Today, we can make a difference in someone’s life if we just open our eyes and hearts. We can encourage others in our church to make a difference. May God help us to “walk our talk.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me see other peoples’ needs with Your eyes. Bring someone into my life today who needs help. Give me the mercy to stop, the wisdom to know what to do and then the love to do it. Thank You, God, for all You have done for me; help me do for others.

Trust, Delight, and Commit

TODAY’S VERSE
Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this.
Psalms 37:3-5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a spiritual rhythm in these three verses. It really speaks to the soul. It is like drinking a tall, cool glass of water after coming in from a steamy, hot day. Somehow trust, delight, and commit seem to go together. Today, start with trusting God. Give everything over to Him. Let go, trust Him. Then stop and delight in Him. Feel His love. Let Him give you deep joy. Delight in His presence. Finally, bow before Him and commit everything to Him. Put your life in His hands. And you know what? He says He will give us the desires of our heart. It doesn’t get any better than this!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I come to You now and trust You with all my concerns, and worries. I choose to delight in You. I commit myself joyfully into Your hands. Thank You that You have promised that if I trust, delight and commit to You, You will give me the desires of my heart.

Don’t Fool Yourself

TODAY’S VERSE
So get rid of all immoral behavior and all the wicked things you do. Humbly accept the word that God has placed in you. This word can save you. Do what God’s word says. Don’t merely listen to it, or you will fool yourselves.
James 1:21-22 (GW)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
With today’s multitasking world it is hard to focus on anything for more than five minutes. Interruptions have become a fact of life. There are emergencies, just-in-time deadlines, and we make judgments on the fly and hope that they stick. Well, if we are going to make it spiritually, we have to be intentional. It isn’t good enough to hear the Bible, a verse here, a sermon there. We need to know the Word of God. And then, most importantly, we need to do it. Start today; make a commitment to study the Bible and apply it to your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I know that it is Your joy to help me learn the Word of God and apply it to my life. I invite You to be my teacher, guide and mentor. Please help me start today to make the Bible a priority in my life. In Jesus’ name.

Increase Your Inner Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.
Ephesians 3:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Two thousand years ago, Paul the Apostle prayed this prayer for the church in Ephesus. He prayed that God would use His mighty resources to strengthen them with POWER in their INNER BEING. Can you think of anything that we need more than that? All around us, there is strife, stress, conflicts, and confusion. We often find ourselves going up and down emotionally. It is easy to get sucked into this world’s problems and forget that there is a God who cares, who loves us and who can strengthen us. In order to make it in this world, we need a mighty reservoir of strength on the inside, where we really live. And how does God impart His strength into our life? Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. According to Paul, it is the job of the Holy Spirit to give us the internal strength we need. This same Spirit that intercedes for us. This same Spirit that leads us into all truth. This same Spirit that is our comfort. The Holy Spirit will give us the strength we need on the inside. Ask Him to strengthen you with His power today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I know You are real. You are our Holy God’s Spirit, that comes and takes residence in us upon our conversion. I confess I have ignored You. I repent and ask Your forgiveness. I ask You now, O Holy Spirit, to come in all Your power and give me strength today in my inner being. Might I live in the fullness of Your power even now. In Jesus’ name.

Give This Day To God

TODAY’S VERSE
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
Psalms 143:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Do you start your day hearing a word from God about His unfailing love? Do you start your day trusting in Him? Do you ask Him for direction, protection, and instruction for the tasks that are ahead of you this day? If not, why not start today? No matter what your yesterdays were, no matter what you fear for tomorrow, there is nothing stopping you from committing this day to God. You can begin a new habit of thanksgiving and expectation today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, in the quietness of this moment, let me hear You confirm Your unfailing love for me. Right now, I put my complete trust in You. Show me the way I should go and rescue me from any trouble today. Please teach me to do Your will. In Jesus’ name.

Search Me

TODAY’S VERSE
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Who are we? Who are we that the God of the universe would be interested in a relationship with us? Yet, this is exactly what today’s passage implies. It is an open invitation to you and me to sit before God and pour out our heart. David knew how prudent it is to let God search our most inner thoughts, emotions, and imaginations. We can come to God without reservation and trust that He cares; that He is interested; that He is able to show us any correction that we need. And the good news is that through this process of being transparent with God, He will lead and direct us. Do you have that kind of relationship with God? If not, you can start today. He stands at the door of your heart and knocks. Open it, invite Him in so He can know you and lead you in the way you should go.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, it is so hard to say, “Search my heart.” I don’t want to slow down. I don’t want to be vulnerable. But, if I cannot trust You with my heart, who can I trust? Forgive me for running from You. Help me be still. Lord Jesus come, search me, know my thoughts and lead me in the way You want me to go.”

More Than This World

TODAY’S VERSE
He has also set eternity in the hearts of men.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is something about this world that causes us to yearn for the next. We were never meant to live here without belief in the next. God created us for more than just this. He created us to be eternal. A soul that never dies. He has etched it deep into our hearts. C.S. Lewis wrote, “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” The good news is that Christ came to make a way to prepare for the next life. He is the only one who lived in both. He is God and human in one. He made a way, through His death, for us to co-exist with a Holy and Almighty God. So much so that we now can come to God and call Him Father. That’s what children do. They call their Father, “Father.” And they long to be home. Listen to that inner voice and respond to your Father in Heaven.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I do hear another voice. It is from a distant land, and I do long to know more about it. There has to be more than what I can see around me. I come today and ask You to make me more conscious of Your presence. More aware of Your power and mystery. I invite Your Heaven to invade my earth and help me become a citizen of both. Awaken my soul to Your heavenly reality. In Jesus’ name.

Help Me Believe

TODAY’S VERSE
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Faith is not easy. If it was, it wouldn’t be “faith”. However, the more we get to know the object of our faith, the more we can “become sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see”. How well do you know God? Do you spend time with Him? Do you trust Him? It’s not always what we “believe” that affects our lives; sometimes it is what we don’t believe. If you do not believe God loves you deeply, if you do not believe that He will do all He says He will, if you do not believe that He will never leave you or forsake you, then your prayer needs to be like the man who came to Jesus to see his boy healed, “I believe, Lord. Help me overcome my unbelief.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I believe but I need You to help me overcome things that I am having a hard time believing. I want to know, love, trust and believe You more and more. In Jesus’ name.
