Choose The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.
Psalms 56:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How often do we think of light as being life-giving? It is when all there is, is darkness. Without the light, we would be in peril. Without light, how would we avoid pending danger? The trouble comes when we get used to the darkness. We feel that what little light there is, is enough. But how distorted it is. There is no color, no definition, no beauty. Shapes are often obscure, and we can end up hurting ourselves. But the word “light” in today’s verse is only a metaphor. It is walking in the presence of God that the Psalmist is writing about. It is being conscious of God and letting Him lead us in everything we do that guides, sustains, and protects us. His light is life-giving. Today we have a choice. We can choose where we want to walk. Will we walk in the darkness, or will we choose the light?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to live in awareness of Your presence. Help me to walk in your life-giving light.
AMEN

He Is Listening

TODAY’S VERSE
I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
Psalms 116:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are a lot of reasons to love the Lord. But one that we often take for granted is His listening ear. The Psalmist wrote that he loved the Lord because God heard his voice and prayer for mercy. He painted a picture of God bending down to listen like an endearing grandfather does his grandchild. How we underestimate God’s loving attention. Studies have shown that shame in a young child is often related to the lack of response from their caregiver. The child made a bid for attention, and the caregiver paid no attention. The child’s conclusion is one of shame, “there must be something wrong with me.” Not so with God. When He hears our voice when He bends down to listen to our very whisper, how our soul responds in love. Today, spend time with God. He longs to hear your voice.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for being there when I pray. Thanks for Your loving attention to the needs of my heart. I love you, Lord.
AMEN

I Want To See

TODAY’S VERSE
As the man came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said, “I want to see!” And Jesus said, “All right, receive your sight! Your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus, praising God. And all who saw it praised God, too.
Luke 18:40-43 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a gift. I love the fact that Jesus said, “What do you want me to do?” Knowing the power of the person asking, the man asked for the extreme gift, “I want to see!” What a request. What an answer. Jesus said, “Alright, receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Jesus has the power to answer our prayers too. I thought of those of us who are not blind. Our eyes work, but what do we see? How many of us suffer from emotional or spiritual blindness? What do we see? Do we see opportunities? Do we see God’s gracious hand in our affairs? Do we see a world with joy, kindness, and love? Or is our vision skewed? We need our blindness healed. We need corrected vision. Where we see doubt, we need to see assurance. Where we see sadness, we need to see joy. Where we see fear, we need to see peace and courage. Where we see hate, we need to see love. Where we see shame, we need to see beauty and purpose. Where we see the darkness of despair, we need to see the light of hope. Today, Jesus is here. He is asking, “What do you want me to do for you?” Tell Him, “Lord, I want to see!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I walk around so blind to the spiritual reality you have for me. I need corrected vision. Holy Spirit, renew my spiritual sight that I may see the truth You have for me. Help me to see hope, joy, peace, and love.
AMEN

Walk In The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
You have kept my feet from slipping. So now I can walk in your presence, O God, in your life-giving light.
Psalms 56:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It makes a difference where you walk. I’ve hiked in many different terrains, in all kinds of weather, but the hardest of all was along a mountain path in the dark. There is nothing more treacherous than walking along a cliff when it is slippery and pitch dark. Some of our team tried to make it and slipped down the side of the mountain. Life can be that way too. How many times does it feel we are on a slippery path in the dark? All around us is dangerous, but we can’t see the path. David knew what that felt like, but he cried out to God. Today we have a choice. We can keep slipping trying to make it on our own, or we can do what David did. He decided to trust God and walk in His presence. He chose to walk in God’s life-giving light. You can too. Come to God today; He will stop you from slipping. He will lead you from the darkness into His life-giving light.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Father, how often I end up on a slippery path in the dark. Thank You for loving me and providing a way out. I come to You now and ask that You keep me from slipping. Help me today to walk in the awareness of Your presence, in Your life-giving light.
AMEN

Shine The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
As Christ-followers we have a Holy purpose! We are part of a Holy Mission. Evil forces have invaded the earth’s domain leaving mankind in darkness. Yet God, in His mercy, has called you and me to bring the light to the world. Each of us to the part of the world He has put us in. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. – Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Perhaps all this sounds over the top. Something you would see in a “Lord of the Rings” type epic. But the reality in this world is that most people are in a spiritual battle, struggling with sin or its effects, spending their time in spiritual darkness. Imagine being in utter darkness when all of a sudden someone comes by offering you eternal light. Being in blindness now you can see. That is the mission of the light bearer. People are searching for a light to illuminate their soul and God has asked us simply to shine the light. Live out our inward reality where other people can see it. Love others the way Christ loves us. Lay out our platter of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, so others can partake. Jobs are great, careers wonderful. If you have a vocation you are blessed, but you will never find a higher calling than bearing the light. Today, might God allow you to shine His light in every area of darkness you come in contact with.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for shining Your light into my dark world. Help me not forget. Today, help me carry Your light and shine it on all those in the darkness around me.
AMEN

Walk In the Light

TODAY’S VERSE

Jesus replied, ‘My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.'” – “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. John 12:35-36, (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Hiking in the darkness is vastly different than hiking in the daytime. Once on a primitive hiking trip, I had to walk an injured person out of the woods to a hospital to get stitched up. It took most of the day. In order to catch up with the rest of the group, we hiked back on the trail during the night. Unfortunately, with so much use, my flashlight became very dim. What a hike! Winding up the mountain, roots form the large trees crossing in the trail, cliffs, animals, ravines, what would be difficult to navigate in daylight became unbearable in the dark. Slowly, using what light we had, we eventually made it back to base camp. How? By focusing on the light! You see, even with dim light, we could see the four or five feet ahead of me. It didn’t matter that thousands of acres were in darkness, I only needed to see the five feet in front of me. Even though our flashlight was dim, no matter how hard it tried, the darkness could not penetrate the light I had. In today’s passage, Jesus told us to, “Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you.” The darkness of sin, doubt, despair, and confusion are always trying to trip us up so we have a choice to make. We can focus on the darkness or we can turn the light on! Might we decide to turn the light of faith, His word and prayer on, living in the joy of knowing Jesus.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how dark my world can become. Help me to remember to turn on the light of faith, prayer, and Your Word so I can navigate the trail You have in front of me today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Light Up My Darkness

TODAY’S VERSE
You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.
Psalms 18:28 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be unpredictable and messy. Every one of us has some drama in their life. We all have a story. We would rather have control over our situation, but so often we are simply left in the dark, wondering what to do. David experienced this. He had his difficulties, but instead of staying in the dark, he turned to God for help. He cried out to God and God became his light. He wrote, “You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.” Today, if things become unclear, if you are bombarded with problems, or if dark clouds start to clutter up your sky, turn to God. He will light your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for being a light in my life. Whenever I have been left in the dark Your light has been right there. Thank You for being a lamp for my path showing me where to go. Guide me today I pray.
AMEN

Are You Shining THe Light?

TODAY’S VERSE
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Matthew 5:14-15

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is the purpose of light? It is to invade the darkness. That’s right. We often fear that darkness is going to overcome us but the truth is darkness does not have power. It does not attack us. Darkness can only happen when there is an absence of light. So, what have we done with the light that God has given us? Do we put it on the hill so all can see? Do we go to the darkest places we can find and let the light of love and the gospel shine forth? No. Instead, we build our own islands of light, good for us but no others. We build our fortress in order to keep the darkness out when in truth there is enough light for everyone. We could prevent the darkness but we have hoarded the light. Might we hear God’s call – be GIVERS of the light! Rise up, use your spiritual gifts – give away the light – invade the world’s darkness. Today, give away hope, peace, love, joy, and God’s good news – GIVE AWAY THE LIGHT!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh, Father, Maker of Light, You have invaded my dark heart, but I am guilty of hoarding it. Forgive me. Help me to invade the darkness and give away Your light. Might all around be delivered from darkness!
AMEN

Search Me

TODAY’S VERSE
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Who are we? Who are we that the God of the universe would be interested in a relationship with us? Yet, this is exactly what today’s passage implies. It is an open invitation to you and me to sit before God and pour out our heart. David knew how prudent it is to let God search our most inner thoughts, emotions, and imaginations. We can come to God without reservation and trust that He cares; that He is interested; that He is able to show us any correction that we need. And the good news is that through this process of being transparent with God, He will lead and direct us. Do you have that kind of relationship with God? If not, you can start today. He stands at the door of your heart and knocks. Open it, invite Him in so He can know you and lead you in the way you should go.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, it is so hard to say, “Search my heart.” I don’t want to slow down. I don’t want to be vulnerable. But, if I cannot trust You with my heart, who can I trust? Forgive me for running from You. Help me be still. Lord Jesus come, search me, know my thoughts and lead me in the way You want me to go.”
AMEN

Be The Light

TODAY’S VERSE
You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Matthew 5:14-15

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Light. You never really appreciate it until you are in the dark. We take light for granted. I remember one night having to hike deep in a forest on a mountainside. I had to get to a destination by morning and all I had was a dim flashlight. All night long I appreciated every ray that emanated from the head of that lifesaving light. The next day on the way back I saw that I had walked for miles along the top of a deep ravine. Without the light, I am sure I would have perished. As Christians, we are the light for the world. We are the illumination on the path that leads through the wilderness along the dangerous ravine. Jesus reminds us that we must not hide the light but instead should put it where everyone can see by its brightness. He concludes with this command, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Today you have a choice. You can contribute to the darkness of those around you or you can be the light. There is no neutral ground. When God gives us an opportunity, might we shine the Love of Christ to those around us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that today You would shine Your light through me. Guide me to the darkness that You want me to shine upon. Help me see the needs around me and respond with Your love and compassion so others will praise Your name.
AMEN
