What Do You Really Need?

TODAY’S VERSE
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
II Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Need. That is certainly a relative word. We have taken the word “need” and have turned it into everything from a wish list to a whim. Larry Crabb addresses this in his book, “The Pressure’s Off.” He writes about what we really need. He writes, “Nothing wrong with desiring safe airplane flights and warm marriages and a decent income. But none of these things, none of our hopes for a “Better Life of Blessings”, represents God’s priority agenda – We need only to be safe from any power that opposes God’s agenda for our lives.” And what agenda do we need? Dr. Crabb shares three needs that God wants for us; radical forgiveness, supernatural love, and spiritual might. The good news is that God can grant you these needs. Through His grace, God provides all of the forgiveness, love, and might you will need to be involved in His good work. Today, lay aside those “other needs” that you think are so important and ask God to meet your actual needs of forgiveness, love, and spiritual might.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need You and Your spiritual provisions of forgiveness, love, and spiritual might more than anything else in the world. Help meet my real needs today. In Jesus’ name.

Choose Wisely

TODAY’S VERSE
Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!  You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Choices can make all the difference in the world. We are constantly taking in data, predicting, and making decisions. There are so many choices to make each day we cannot keep count. However, some choices are more critical than others. Vanilla or chocolate ice cream may not affect your world one little bit. But moral or legal issues can alter your life. The friends you choose and the things you choose to do can steer the direction of your life. Who you will marry, college choices and career choices are life-altering milestones. But the one choice that guides all others is your choice to follow God or not. Moses calls it “choosing life”. And like many major choices, they are only as good as the thousands of little choices you make to support your decision. You can decide to cross the ocean in a sailboat, but it is the daily choices you make in re-correcting your course that get you to the other shore. In the marriage ceremony, we ask the groom, “Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking every other, keep to her only, so long as you both shall live?” He can say, “I do” but it is only as good as him getting up every day and saying, “I will!” Moses said that you could choose life by making a choice to love God, obey Him and committing yourself firmly to Him. Today, choose to follow God in all you do because “choosing to follow God is the key to your life.” 

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I choose You. I choose to live for You. I choose to follow you in all that I do. Guide me, direct me. Give me the strength to do this, in Jesus’ name.

Mockery

TODAY’S VERSE
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it. When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
Matthew 27:28-31 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who were these guys? Were they regular working guys with families to support? Were they patriotic servants of Rome? Were they just some guys trying to do their job? Whoever they were, they acted according to their beliefs. They weren’t followers of Jesus. They did not ascribe to His teachings. Instead, they mocked His claims to be King of the Jews. They beat Him, spit on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. But we are believers. And yet, I can’t help but ask, “How do I treat Jesus?” No, I don’t spit on Him, but do I follow His commands? I haven’t hit Him with a stick, but do I confess my sin and keep a clean conscience with Him? I don’t put a crown of thorns on His head, but do I worship Him in daily prayer? I don’t mockingly call Him, “King of the Jews” but do I make Him king of my life today? The question is, “Who hurts Jesus more, the soldiers who beat Him, spit on Him, and led Him away to be crucified, or the believer who ignores Him and lives as if Christ never existed at all? Today, remember He died for you; He gladly took all the pain and mocking so you could know Him deeply and personally. Today, worship and serve Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have mocked You with my life. Forgive me for the times I have spit upon You with my indifference. I confess my apathy and ask for You to rekindle a fire in my heart today. I want to follow You. I want to live for You.
AMEN

Peace Not Control

TODAY’S VERSE
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Perfect peace. Just the thought of it calms my heart. It is a peace that comes from maturity. It is peace from knowing God in deep and intimate ways. I used to think it was control. If I could just control things I would have peace. I must avoid those things from the past that haunt me. I must keep appearances and not let anyone know the real me. I must worry and try to control the future, so I am not a victim again. What a trap. And this lack of peace, this need for control, brings all its friends to my front doorstep. Anger, bitterness, jealousy, loneliness, despair, and anxiety all congregate, waiting to get into my mind. How wrong I have been. The more I try to control, the more I need to control. Instead, with the peace from God in my heart, I no longer have to be in charge. This is perfect peace. Today, trust in God. Bring Him all your control issues. He knows your situation. He knows your past and future. Fix your thoughts on Him and His incredible love for you. Let Him give you a lasting, mature, and perfect peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You now. I want to experience your peace. I give up control and turn my situation and life over to You. In Jesus’ name.

God, Increase My Inner Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.
Ephesians 3:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul the Apostle prayed this prayer for the church in Ephesus two thousand years ago. He prayed that God would use His mighty resources to strengthen them with POWER in their INNER BEING. Can you think of anything that we need more than that? All around us, there is strife, stress, conflicts, and confusion. We often find ourselves going up and down emotionally. It is easy to get sucked into this world’s problems and forget that there is a God who cares, loves us, and can strengthen us. To make it in this world, we need a mighty reservoir of strength on the inside, where we live. And how does God impart His strength into our lives? Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. According to Paul, it is the job of the Holy Spirit to give us the internal strength we need. This same Spirit that intercedes for us. This same Spirit that leads us into all truth. This same Spirit that is our comfort. This same Holy Spirit will give us the strength we need on the inside. Ask Him to strengthen you with His power today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I know You are real. You are our Holy God’s Spirit that comes and takes residence in us upon our conversion. I confess I have ignored You. I repent and ask Your forgiveness. I ask You now, O Holy Spirit, to come in all Your power and give me strength today in my inner being. Might I live in the fullness of Your power even now. In Jesus’ name.

More Than This World

TODAY’S VERSE
He has also set eternity in the hearts of men.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Something about this world causes us to yearn for the next. We were never meant to live just here. God created us for more than just this. He created us to be eternal. A soul that never dies. He has etched it deep into our hearts. C.S. Lewis wrote, “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” The good news is that Christ came to make a way to prepare for the next life. He is the only one who lived in both. He is God and human in one. He made a way, through His death, for us to co-exist with a Holy and Almighty God. So much so that we now can come to God and call Him “Daddy.” That’s what children do. They call their Father “Daddy.” And they long to be home with him. Listen to your inner voice and respond to your Father in Heaven.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I do hear another voice. It is from a distant land, and I long to know more about it. There has to be more than what I can see around me. I come today and ask You to make me more conscious of Your presence. More aware of Your power and mystery. I invite Your Heaven to invade my earth and help me become a citizen of both. Awaken my soul to Your heavenly reality. In Jesus’ name.

Baby Steps

TODAY’S VERSE
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
II Peter 1:5-8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you bought the lie? Do you sit around wishing there was something you could do about your spiritual life? Do you feel helpless to live the kind of life Christ has asked you to? Well, there is good news! You and I do not have to be victims of satanic attacks or the pull of our old nature. God, in His word, has suggested a better way. He tells us to make every effort to “add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.” Every effort, I can live with that. Every effort means that we really try. It acknowledges that there may be setbacks, but that is okay. Get up and make every effort again! That is what Peter means when he writes that we need to possess these qualities in increasing measure. He is talking about baby steps. We make every effort, fall down, get up, and make every effort again. When we do, look at the hope; look at what God promises. He says if we make every effort to increase our faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love in baby steps, it will keep us from being ineffective and unproductive in our Christian walk. Today, you can claim this promise for yourself. Don’t buy the lie. You can live for God today. You can make a difference, one baby step at a time.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I want to live for You but acknowledge that I keep tripping up. Help me take my faith and add goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love in baby steps. Holy Spirit, convict, guide, and give me the discipline to begin living for You today. In Jesus’ name.

Filled With God’s Knowledge

TODAY’S VERSE
We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
Colossians 1:9-10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Being filled with the knowledge of God is crucial to our Christian experience. But how does this happen? How are we filled with the knowledge of God? We gain knowledge as we read His word for understanding and quiet ourselves listening to God. Dallas Willard, in his book Hearing God shares, “So our union with God – His presence with us, in which our aloneness is banished, and the meaning and full purpose of human existence is realized – consists chiefly in a conversational relationship with God while we are each consistently and deeply engaged as His friend and co-laborer in the affairs of the kingdom of Heaven.” This is what Paul is talking about. We listen to God, muse on His word, and practice His presence as we live for Him. When we do, He will give us wisdom and knowledge, the fruit of good works, and all the strength and power we need. Does it get any better than that?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, is it true? Can I be filled with your knowledge and wisdom? Can my life bear good works? Can I have Your strength and power in my life? It is what I truly desire. Please help me, Lord, with the discipline I need to spend time listening to You and reading Your word. Help me experience Your presence. In Jesus’ name.

Search My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Bible says David “was a man after God’s heart.” What a tribute. Contrary to what we might think, this was not because David was perfect. He knew how easily he could fall into sin. He remembered how God had to wake him up from an immoral stupor through the rebuke of Nathan, the Prophet. If anyone could have created the slogan “No perfect people allowed,” it was David. David had to give up the “perception of perfection” in order to renew a close relationship with God. When God convicted David of wrongdoing, David repented, asking God to be merciful. To stay in a close relationship with God, David decided to allow God to speak to him about his behavior. He prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” How about you? Do you feel far from God? Who moved? What is stopping you from coming back? Is it pride? Is it anger? Is it the false notion that you don’t need to? Let us join David in becoming a person after God’s heart, not through the mistaken ambition of perfection, but through the daily, honest, and open relationship with God that allows Him to search us, point out what we are doing wrong, and then lead us along the path of following Him.

Father, I come to you today and pray what David prayed so long ago, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

Fulfill Your Purpose

TODAY’S VERSE
With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
II Thessalonians 1:11-12

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Did anyone ever ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Or have you ever taken a test to help you determine your passions and purpose in life? You could spend your whole life trying to find your purpose, that perfect job, or the fulfillment of your childhood dream and never come close to what Paul was praying for the Christians in Thessalonica. What a magnificent prayer. The good news is that you can pray the same thing for yourself. God has called you to serve Him, and you can pray with Paul “that by His power He may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.” Can you imagine that? You see, this is God’s genuine desire for you to use His power to help you fulfill every good purpose of yours. The result is that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in your life! So, what good purpose do you have today? What act prompted by your faith will you engage in today? Might God empower you by His grace to do all He has called you to this day so that He will be glorified.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You that You can fulfill every good purpose of mine and every act prompted by my faith! What an exciting thought. Please help me understand what this really means in my life. Help me not to waste this precious life You have given me. Might I live it today for Your glory. In Jesus’name.
