What Do You Want?

TODAY’S VERSE
What do you want me to do for you?
Mark 10:49-51 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Today’s verse was one of the first passages I ever preached on. I was a teenager giving a gospel message. I still remember, to this day, the impact this simple passage had on me. Here was this blind man sitting by the road, and he heard that Jesus was coming by. He started shouting out to Jesus. The disciples tried to make him quiet down, but nothing could shut him up. Jesus tells them to bring the man to Him. I love what happens next. Jesus looks at him and asks the blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man answers, “I want to see.” What appealed to me then as a teenager still appeals to me decades later. It was the sincerity of Jesus and the invitation to tell Him what the blind man wanted. This is the same Jesus that we pray to. It is the same heart of Christ that bids us to come to Him. It is the same power available that asks such an open-ended question. Today, see Him passing your way. Sit before Him and answer His question, “What do you want me to do for you?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, I thank You for coming my way today. I thank You for caring so much for me that You ask me what I need from You. I come silently before You and share my request. – Thank You, Lord, for hearing the desire of my heart.
AMEN

Lord, Revive Us

TODAY’S VERSE
Give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.
Acts 4:29-30 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
And we wonder why the early church exploded. Could it be that prayers like the one that Peter prayed made a difference? Listen to the fervor. Listen to the pleading with God that He would show up in powerful, magnificent ways. Listen to the commitment and dedication of the early disciples. I believe God wants the same from us today. Programs are good. Books and seminars are very helpful. But what we need is to come to God in the same sense of mission that Peter did. Look at what happened after they prayed with such urgency. “After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.” When is the church going to become missional? When will we see that we are His ambassador called to share Christ’s love with a dying and hurting world? When we do, we will see the same results Peter and the early church saw.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, give me great boldness in sharing your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power, and may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.
AMEN

Grace and Power

TODAY’S VERSE
Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people.
Acts 6:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
If given a choice, which would you rather be filled with? God’s grace or God’s power? At first, it seemed obvious that I would choose God’s power. His mighty power can do more than we could ever imagine. With this power, Stephen did amazing miracles and signs among the people. Oh God, fill me with Your power! But upon second thought, what good is the power of God without His grace? His grace is what guides the power. It is His grace that forgives, sets free, and loves. It is very possible to know about God’s power and grace and not live for His glory. However, if I were filled with God’s almighty grace, I am convinced His power would follow. Grace is the power of God to change lives. Grace is the power of love. Grace is the vessel that God’s power chooses to flow through. So today, let us pray that God would fill us with His grace so His power will work through us in amazing miracles and signs.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Jesus, fill me with Your grace. Not a small part of me, all of me. Help me be completely led by Your grace. I pray that Your power, led by Your grace, would flow through me to those in need. Lord, You did it in the early church. Bring revival again today. Rain down your grace and power, I pray. Begin it in me.
AMEN

God’s Power Today

TODAY’S VERSE
For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.
I Corinthians 4:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can sure do a lot of talk. We talk about change. We talk about revival. We talk about outreach. But the truth is, talk alone won’t change anything. And if nothing changes, nothing changes. The New Testament Church exploded because it was more than talk. It was action. The early Christians tapped into the power of God, and it was God’s power working through His people. God’s power to heal the hurting. God’s power to answer prayers. God’s power to change people. God’s power to give boldness and strength even in the face of persecution. God’s power is available to us as well. We serve the same God, and He is on the same mission to love the world through His church. Today, might our hearts cry, “Lord, help me live by Your power!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, give me the faith to believe You for great and mighty things.
I pray that Your power will flow through me to those in need. Father, might Your Kingdom, with all of its power, come. Might Your will be done on earth today, as it is in Heaven!
AMEN

Lord, Do It Again

TODAY’S VERSE
LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known.
Habakkuk 3:2 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is on your bucket list? Before you die, what do you want to see done? When I consider all that I would like to see, the thing that I long for the most is to see God work in all His power. Like Habakkuk, I stand in awe of God and all He has done. I read the Bible, and my heart cries out, Lord, do it again in our day. I long for signs and wonders to manifest to those who don’t believe. I long for revival to break out in the Church and see God’s people loving their neighbors as they do themselves. I pray that God would bring back the fervor of the New Testament church. I stand in awe of His deeds! I pray that God will renew them again in our day and time and that it might start with you and me!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh, Mighty God, I come in the name of Jesus and ask You to renew Your mighty deeds in our day. I stand in awe of You and all You have done and pray that You will do it again in this generation. Use me as an agent of your love and power, I pray.
AMEN

Be Like Elijah

TODAY’S VERSE
Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
James 5:17-18

TODAY’S COMMENT
I love how James starts his example of Elijah and his miraculous prayer life. He says, “Elijah was a man just like us.” No wonder we feel pressure to be a super saint. We go to church with the halo just right and “S” on our chest. But that was not the point James was trying to make. James was really saying, “There are no perfect people needed to get God’s work done!” I am sure that the image of Elijah that James had in his mind wasn’t just the praying for rain to stop and start again, not just the fire coming from heaven to consume the altar, not just the flour and oil that continued to be supplied to the widow and her son; nor was it just the image of Elijah asking God to raise the widow’s son from the dead. I am sure that James also remembered that Elijah was afraid of Jezebel’s threat to kill him and ran, fleeing for his life. He knew Elijah became exhausted and sat down under a tree and prayed that he would die. James knew that Elijah was a person just like you and I. Elijah had emotions that could lead to despair. He had depression, doubt, and fear. Like us, Elijah exercised doubt and faith, fear and courage, victory and defeat. But James also saw God work through Elijah’s life and prayers. God used Elijah even with his imperfections. God can do the same for you and me. We do not have to be perfect. We do not have to pretend to be something we are not. We can be honest with God about our deepest feelings and fears, like Elijah. God will meet us where we are and give us strength to live for Him. Be real with God today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for the example of Elijah. What a wonderful testimony of Your grace. How You took this person who could be so courageous one moment and so afraid the next, and used him for Your glory. Father, use my life. I give it to You in all its complexity and contradictions. Thank You that I do not have to be perfect, just available. Use me for Your glory, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Be Still

TODAY’S VERSE
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Mark 4:39-41

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I have never been on a stormy sea. I can only imagine how fierce the storm must have been. Here are seasoned fishermen and they were exceedingly afraid. Now it did not help that they were going across the lake. The deep part of the lake in the center regions was referred to as the “abyss.” Many frightening fishermen stories were based on journeying into the abyss. Add to that the fact that they left in the evening. It was dark! Finally, they were going to the “other side”. Everyone knew what the “other side” was. It was where that horrific demon processed person lived in the caves. Jesus knew where they were going and fell asleep on the back of the boat. The storm was fast, furious and fierce and they cried out to Jesus. What they saw happen next was shocking to them, and they had seen healing miracles! Jesus stood and commanded the sea to be still! And it did. Now I don’t know about storms on the sea, but I know about storms inside the “sea” of my mind. There is an abyss, there is an “other side” that frightens all of us. Dread, fear, worry, remorse, addictions, obsessive thinking; it seems that our ship is going to sink. When you feel all is lost, do what the disciples did — cry out to Jesus. Name your fear, tell Him exactly what it is that you dread; be specific with your doubts. This same Jesus that said to the sea “Be still” says to you, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, You calmed the sea; please calm my troubled heart with the peace only You can give. I take the horrific storms of my life and submit them to Your command. You say “peace be still” so I choose not to be troubled or afraid. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
