Real Hope

TODAY’S VERSE
Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
Daniel 10: 12-13

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love this passage because of the hope it gives. There are two great truths to learn from this passage. The first is that God hears the cry of our heart. The angel assures Daniel, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.” What a precious reality is painted by the angel. Since the very first time Daniel set his mind in the direction of God, the Lord was aware and heard his prayers. He does the same with us. The second truth is that God works on our behalf even if we don’t understand His timing. The angel saw it as a delay. He was detained for twenty-one days by other duties. Daniel was fasting and praying that God would rescue him quickly. He no doubt was wondering what God was doing. However, from God’s perspective the angel arrived right in time. God was in control and all worked for good. Perhaps my brother Rodney Ovitt says it best in his commentary on this passage. He writes, “To me, this doesn’t diminish my faith or cause me to doubt God’s power and might. It just broadens the mystery! There is so much that we don’t understand and so much going on in the cosmos that we must simply trust God and know that He will see us through to the end.” God will see you through to the end. Do not grow weary, do not give up. Hope yet in God; He is aware of your prayers.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, it is so hard to wait. I cry out to You and it seems that there is no answer. My heart despairs and is tempted to grow bitter. Forgive me, Lord. Help me to understand what You showed Daniel. You are conscious of my situation and Your solutions are always on time. Thank You, Father, that You do hear my prayers and that I can trust You with the timing of Your answer. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Why Should I Fear?

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid?
The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?
Psalm 27:1

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David is asking a rhetorical question, at least for him. David is pointing out that God is our light and salvation, our fortress, protecting us from danger. Therefore it begs the question, “Why should I be afraid?” However, many of us do not know God in that way. We’ve never read the end of the chapter. David ends the Psalm by writing, “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” It is in the waiting that our strength is renewed. It is in the waiting that things become clearer. In the waiting, we learn more about God and His love for us. He is the answer. He is the light. He is the fortress. David knew this because He had waited many times on God. In fact, David was called “a man after God’s own heart.” That is where the light is. That is where the fortress is. Today, wait and get to know God’s heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I often seek answers when I should be seeking You. Help me wait on You and know You as my light and salvation, refuge and strength.
AMEN

A Grand Invitation

TODAY’S VERSE
My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is a prayer to you? Is it a time to request God for needs that you or others have? Perhaps it is thanksgiving, where you praise God for all you have. These are undoubtedly right and legitimate reasons to pray. But prayer is more than that. It is more than talking to God. It is a grand invitation to talk with God. It is a request from the heart of God for communion. The Psalmist’s heart heard God say, “Come and talk with me.” God is saying the same to your heart. The Psalmist said, “Lord I am coming.” What will your heart say? Today, commune with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I have heard you say, “Come and tale with me.” I come, Lord, my heart is open; commune with me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Splendor Of His Holiness

TODAY’S VERSE
Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
Psalms 29:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So often, we are taught to “Fear” the Lord. He is Holy and to be deeply revered. But there is another side of His Holiness that bids us come close. There is a splendor to His presence. Something about His power, majesty, and might that is greater than awesome. It has a magnificence that is beyond our imagination. It is a splendor that can take us beyond our comprehension. We worship, and with our souls, we can see His beauty, the radiance of His love for us, the warmth of His presence, and soon the absolute splendor of being with Him. Oh, today, linger longer; wait for it. Open the eyes of your heart and be amazed!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh, Father, how marvelous You are. Help me to worship You in the splendor of Your holiness. Because of Jesus.
AMEN

God Listens To You

TODAY’S VERSE
I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
Psalm 116:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever felt that nobody listens to you? It is very demoralizing to think that we are so insignificant that what we say doesn’t matter. But according to today’s verse, that is not true. Not in the least! The Psalmist is overwhelmed by God’s attention. It is the very reason he loves God. The result is that he declares he will pray as long as he has breath. So the question is: If God is listening, why aren’t we talking? Think about it. How many conversations do you have with God in a day? How relevant is God in your life? Do you defer to Him for wisdom? How much time do you spend letting God know about your situation? How much time do you spend showing Him your deep appreciation for all He has done? Today, know that God hears you. Know that He bends down to listen to you specifically. Might you respond with the same joy as the Psalmist and declare, “I will pray as long as I have breath!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father God. Forgive me for the times I have not come to You. Thank You that You love me and desire to hear my prayers. I come to You today with a renewed commitment. I want to commune with You in new and fresh ways. Help me, Lord, to share with You more.
AMEN

Where Are You Walking?

TODAY’S VERSE
And so I walk in the LORD’s presence as I live here on earth!
Psalms 116:9

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Where are you walking? It is easy to walk and not be conscious of where we are. I was hiking on a mountain trail in a dark green lush forest. It was a beautiful sunny day, and yet as the afternoon set in, it suddenly dawned on me that I spent most of my time looking down at the trail, watching out for roots, rocks, and snakes, trying to forge ahead and make my destination. We have a negativity bias. I never looked up at the trees or saw all the beautiful panoramic views of the valley below. I missed a whole day of breathtaking scenery because of my preoccupation with potential dangers in the trail in front of me. Our God is magnificent. His love is unfathomable. And yet, if we are not careful, we will find ourselves walking through this life worried about everything, never really aware of His loving and protective presence. Today, let’s make a conscious effort, like the Psalmist, to walk in the Lord’s presence as we live here on earth!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am so sorry for missing so much of your love. I have not been consciously aware of your grace and Glory because I have been preoccupied with a negativity bias. I forgot that you love me and will protect me. You are the true source of joy, love, and life itself. Today, Lord, I come back. I want to walk the trail with you, fully conscious of Your presence. Oh, Holy Spirit, help me to that end, I pray.
AMEN

Servant of the Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:38

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a shock it must have been to Mary. First, to see an angel would have been an incredible experience. But to have that angel say that you would have a baby through Immaculate Conception and that the baby would be God in the flesh would have been incomprehensible. But instead of trying to get her mind around it, Mary let her faith understand. In love, trust, and obedience, she submitted to the word of God through the angel. How did she do it? A better question may be, “Why did she submit to such an inconceivable experience?” She could say, “Let it be to me according to your word,” because she was confident in who she was. Before this ever happened, she had made up her mind that she was a servant of the Lord. What a difference it makes in our life when that issue is settled. You see, the word “No” and “Lord” cannot go together. The only possible answer to the Lordship of Christ is, “Yes, Your will be done.” Today, come to God as young Mary did. Say, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I desire Your will in my life. Like Mary, I come to You today and say, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
AMEN

Why Worry?

TODAY’S VERSE
I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
Psalms 34:4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Anxiety and fear can play havoc in our lives, so we worry. It is so ironic that we think worry will squelch our concerns, but in reality, it keeps them alive. Deep in our hearts, we feel we cannot face our painful emotions. We are afraid of our fear! Our fear must not be accepted or expressed lest we go out of control, be humiliated, rejected, or worse. And so we worry and do everything we can to avoid our painful emotions. But David knew the cure for worry. It wasn’t running from our feelings; instead, he took his fear directly to God. And God heard him and delivered him from all of them. God can do the same for you. Today bring your fears to God and stop worrying.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, forgive me for my incessant worrying. Today I seek You and bring You all my fears. Take them and help me to trust in You.
AMEN

I AM

TODAY’S VERSE
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”
Exodus 3:14 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The stage was set. Moses was standing in front of a burning bush that was not being consumed. A voice said, “Take off your shoes for this is Holy Ground.” Then God revealed Himself to Moses. God wanted to go to Pharoah and ask him to release all the Jews from slavery. Moses doubted whether the people would accept him as a leader, so he asked God, “Who can I say sent me?” God said to tell them, “I Am sent you.” “I Am who I Am.” I AM! It says it all! He is before all things, below all things, above all things, after all things. God is the strong one, creator, Most High, Father, King of Kings, the Way the Truth and the Life, Love, Holy One of Israel, Great Shepherd, Alpha and Omega, our healer, Redeemer, Savior, and protector. Today you are on Holy ground. This same great and mighty “I AM” loves you. Stop and worship Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy One. Who am I that You would love me and allow me to know You, You the Great I AM? How I love You. How I worship You. How I Praise You, my dear and precious Lord.
AMEN

Free Fall

TODAY’S VERSE
I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
Psalms 94:18-19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Ever feel like you were slipping? My son and I were free climbing a small cliff, and he lost his grip. I was on a ledge just below and caught him. We both breathed a sigh of relief, and up he went again to the top. I was there to support him. He was my son, and I wasn’t going to let anything happen to him. The psalmist knew about slipping. That emotional freefall when assailed by doubts and the loss of hope. But he also knew about God’s love. When life seemed out of control, he cried out to God, whose unfailing love supported him. When doubts assailed him, causing him to lose his emotional balance, God’s comfort renewed his hope and brought him happiness. Today, don’t let slipping scare you. Bring all your doubts and fears to God, and let him comfort you and renew your hope.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for being there when I am slipping. I trust in your unfailing love and ask you to renew my hope and happiness. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
