An Open Door

TODAY’S VERSE
Open for me the gates where the righteous enter and I will go in and thank the Lord. These gates lead to the presence of the Lord, and the godly enter there.
Psalms 118:19-20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
An open door can make all the difference in the world. How many times have you sought solutions, answers, or any form of direction, and nothing seems to appear? If only something would open up. And all the while, God is there bidding us come to Him and find the truth. But it’s not good enough to just have an invitation or an open door. You must go in. The Psalmist understood this. He cried out to God to open the gates into His presence, and when God did, he entered. He entered into the presence of God and fellowshipped with Him. For us, every day is an opportunity to enter into the sweet presence of God. But it’s our choice. We can walk by or enter the door. Today choose to stop and spend time with God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for opening the door for me to fellowship with You. Lead me into Your presence, so I might know You more.

Comfort Me

TODAY’S VERSE
God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Comfort. How often we long for it. It is one of our greatest needs. Every day has its challenges. We find ourselves on an emotional roller coaster constantly in need to regulate our emotions. We try all types of solutions but to no avail. Only real comfort soothes us, consoles our breaking heart, reassuring us that all will be okay. Only comfort supports and encourages us in the face of conflict. Only comfort gives us relief in affliction and lasting consolation to our weary soul. But comfort is only as good as the comforter. It is no comfort when a dying man says, “Try my medicine.” A person who is lost is no comfort to someone else seeking directions. In today’s verse, we find that it is God who is our “merciful Father and source of all comfort.” It is God that comforts us in all our troubles. It is God and His love for us that returns us to joy. It is knowing Him, in all His majesty, that gives us hope and assurance. It is knowing that we are the objects of His unfailing love that makes Him the source of all our comfort. And with this comfort, we, in turn, can comfort others. Today, come to God. Bring all your burdens to Him. Give Him your emotions and let Him comfort you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am in great need of Your comfort. Only You can satisfy. Only Your love can bring what my soul needs. Comfort me, I pray. In Jesus name.

Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The battle is in our minds. Truth versus lies. False assumptions verses God’s promises. Negative predictions versus faith. Roots of bitterness, jealously, fear, and shame versus the mind of Christ. And though all these strongholds can be overcome by God’s power, how much better if we never let negative thinking get that far. We can if we follow Paul’s advice. He asks us to “demolish arguments and every pretense that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” A stronghold begins with a simple negative thought. Then, instead of renouncing it, we make a subtle agreement with it. “God doesn’t care.” “I can’t do it.” We start to generalize using words like “never, always, and every.” Oh, not a stronghold yet, but if we don’t disagree with the thought, what are we really doing? Soon we begin to ruminate and start to build on the negativity. Before you know it, we have created a full-blown story. We have “set ourselves up against the knowledge of God.” God wants us to renounce and correct negative unbiblical thinking. Today, commit your mind to God. Let His Holy Spirit work with your thinking and bring it into alignment with His word.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. I commit my thinking to you. Holy Spirit rule in my mind. Help me know and believe Your truth so I can make all my thoughts obedient to Christ.

Never Abandoned

TODAY’S VERSE
The LORD will not abandon his people – for it has pleased the LORD to make you his very own people.
I Samuel 12:22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t know how it could be any clearer, yet if you struggle, as I have, with issues of shame and abandonment, this verse will seem like some vague concept you can’t quite get your thoughts around. However, I have come to believe that even in the most fearful of us, the Lord can meet us, open our eyes to the truth, and give us hope and peace. “The Lord will not abandon His people.” Don’t just read these words, feel them. Drop your guard, relax your shoulders, take a deep breath, and as you exhale slowly, let the emotion of this tremendous promise sink deep into your chest: “God, our Father, will not abandon you.” And if that is not enough, hear the author say, “It has pleased the Lord to make you His very own people.” And that you are! Today, know deep in your heart, “You are God’s child, and He will never, never, never abandon you.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for my fear that you will abandon me and a lack of trust in Your love. I renounce this, Lord. Today, I accept the fact that it pleased You to make me Your child and that you will never leave me. I praise You, Lord, for this.

Filled With The Spirit

TODAY’S VERSE
Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power.
Luke 4:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When I read today’s passage, I can’t help but think, “If Jesus needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit, shouldn’t I?” Paul writes about this very thing. He writes, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” What does this mean? The key is in reference to being drunk on wine. There is only one way to get drunk. You get drunk by being “filled” with alcohol until the amount that you consume has you under its influence. This is not a casual drink that is in moderation. It is in excess to where you become drunk. So what is he saying about our life in the Spirit? Paul says that instead of getting drunk with wine, let us have the same insatiable appetite for the guidance and fellowship of the Holy Spirit. When we meditate, read, pray and commune with the Holy Spirit enough, which is more than a casual occurrence of reading a few verses of scriptures, we will begin to be “filled” or under the influence of the Holy Spirit’s leading in our daily living. It is interesting, the tense is not a “one-time” filling, but means “be filled and keep on being filled.” We do not get drunk on wine once for the rest of our life. The effect of the wine soon dissipates. If our goal is to be continually drunk, we would have to continually drink the wine. To stay “filled” or influenced by the Holy Spirit, we need to stay in communication and fellowship with the Holy Spirit continuously. Today, commit yourself to the work of the Holy Spirit and ask Him to fill you and guide you throughout this day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I recognize that you desire to fill me and completely guide my life. I give You control. Come Holy Spirit, fill me, I pray.

But God

TODAY’S VERSE
We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside. But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us.
II Corinthians 7:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Two words. Two words that can turn everything around. Two words that make all the difference in the world. Two words, that are available to us at any time. Paul is beside himself so he writes, “We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside.” He paints a bleak picture, with seemingly no hope, and then he writes two words, “but God.” All would have been lost, “but God.” There would have been no hope, “but God.” There is nothing that could be done, “but God.” It was God. The God who encourages those who are discouraged encouraged him. And He will do the same for us. Today, let God be the difference. Let God give you all the encouragement you need. Let God be God in your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, you know all about me. You are the one that makes all the difference in my life. Thank You for being the God of all encouragement. Encourage my heart today.

God Is in The Waiting

TODAY’S VERSE
I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken. – O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How do you wait? I have to admit that I do not always wait with patience. I do not always wait with faith. Often, when I have to wait, anger, worry, and fear are my companions. Not far behind are murmuring and complaining, waiting to have their say. Why is that? Why is waiting so hard? It is because I forget that it is God I am waiting on. Worse, I behave as if He doesn’t exist. David was different. He said that he waited quietly before God. Why? Because, if David was going to be victorious, he knew it would be because of God. God was his rock, salvation, fortress, and refuge. David knew the peace that came from trusting God, and he implores us to do the same. He says, “Trust in God at all times. Pour out our heart to Him.” What a difference this will make. As we pour out our concerns, worries, fears, doubts, all that is on our heart to God, He will reassure us. He will guide us. He will give us the peace we need. Today when the pressure is on, when you are under the gun, and you have to wait, try waiting quietly on God. He will be your rock. He will give you the victory.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my impatience. Forgive me for leaving You out of my life. Help me to remember that You love me and care about the details of my life. Today help me, as I wait patiently on You.

His Grace Is Enough

TODAY’S VERSE
Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes it is hard to hang on. Tragic news, delayed answers, unfulfilled dreams, disappointing outcomes; it is easy to get discouraged. But God knows what we are going through. He invites us to share our cares with Him. We can call upon God’s great love, goodness, and mercy to sustain us. Even Jesus knew what it was to throw Himself at the mercy of God. When facing His eminent torturous death, He cried out to His father, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” And though He died, God’s grace never left Him. The Father took the cup of death from Him when He rose from the dead. What is it you need relief from? What has you down and discouraged? What is it that seems so overwhelming? Bring it to Jesus. Lay your burden at the foot of the cross and hear Jesus say to you, what He said to Paul, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” Might you find His grace enough for you today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that no matter what my circumstances, You promise that Your grace will be sufficient for me. Your wisdom will guide me. Your love will embrace me and draw me to Your side. I choose to live my life today in that reality. In Jesus’ name.

Holding On

TODAY’S VERSE
Since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Holding on. Have you ever felt like that’s all you can do? Things are out of control. You are not sure what to do? The question is, “What do you hang on to?” The author of Hebrews says that we should “hold firmly to the faith we profess.” But this is not some “blind” faith. Instead, we hold on to a faith that is in a God who cares and empathizes with our situation. Jesus knows what it is to be human, to suffer, to be tempted, to be abandoned, beaten, and killed. He also knows how to love unconditionally, to forgive every imaginable sin, to be tempted and not give in, and to rise from the dead. Is it no wonder that the author gives one of the most incredible pieces of advice ever given? He writes, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence.” He is suggesting that you can come boldly right into the presence of God without the worry of repercussion. And what will you get when you enter right into the very presence of God? He promises that you will receive mercy and find grace to help you in your time of need. So today, when you feel anxious or worried, hold on! If you find yourself alone and depressed, hold on! If everything you hear is negative and panic sets in, hold on! If you become angry and bitterness starts to fester, hold on! Hold on to His mercy and grace; they will never fail.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You and hold on today. I thank You that You are the great High Priest that never sinned but became the perfect sacrifice for my sin. I place my faith in You, dear Father, and come to Your throne of grace with confidence. Thank You for Your mercy and grace that is always there in my time of need.

Say, “No” To Anxiety

TODAY’S VERSE
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Anxiety can ruin a day. Most of our anxiety centers around something terrible we think will happen. Of course, this would make anyone anxious; but the truth is that most of the time the terrible things we think will happen, don’t! That is the dilemma. We believe so many lies. No wonder Jesus said that the truth would set us free. So what is our definition of terrible? Basically, it is something that we think will be more than we could ever endure. It is a frightful dread. It is beyond human endurance, worst than anything we can imagine. According to William Backus in his book, “Telling Yourself the Truth,” there are four areas of anxiety. They are Fear of losing someone’s love. Fear of making someone angry or upset. Fear of public embarrassment. Fear of pain and death. Now Jesus comes along and says, “Don’t let your heart be troubled.” Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about ANYTHING!” Backus suggests that you can minimize your fears until you see them for what they are, lies, and do not be anxious. So, today realize that you have a choice and choose not to be anxious. Today believe the truth that you can trust God and choose not to be anxious. Today when anxiety comes, know that the terrible dread that it conjures up is a lie and follow Paul’s instruction, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I give You my anxious heart. Forgive me for believing so many lies. Help me change my core beliefs and bring them in line with Your word. Today I choose faith and bring all my anxieties to You.
