We Need To Walk The Talk

TODAY’S VERSE
What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
James 2:14-18

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a world in such need, but we are so busy we don’t see it. We are so inwardly focused, so concerned about our welfare we don’t stop to help others. That is not the way of Christ! Our churches should be making huge differences in our communities, but we don’t. Often, we are trying to be the best church in the community. But the author, Eric Swanson, challenges us and says that we should try to be the best church for and with the community instead. That is Christ’s way. When will this change? It can change TODAY if you and I decide to do something. Today, we can make a difference in someone’s life by opening our eyes and hearts. We can encourage others in our church to make a difference. May God help us to “walk our talk.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me see other peoples’ needs with Your eyes. Bring someone into my life today who needs help. Give me the mercy to stop, the wisdom to know what to do, and the love to do it. Thank You, God, for all You have done for me; help me do for others.
AMEN

Do His Work

TODAY’S VERSE
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When was the last time you did something for the Lord? He loves you. He cares for you. God wants to work with you to do His will. Paul reminds us, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Doing His good works in His time and His strength is what we were created for. It is where we will be the most fulfilled. It is where we will have the greatest peace. Today, work with God. Find out what He wants you to do and join Him. Ask God to guide you, direct you and lead you. You were created to do His good works.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I realize that so much of what I have done has been on my own. Today I know that I am Your workmanship and that You created me to do Your good works. I ask You to take charge of my life. I invite you to guide me in all I do. I commit this day and all of its activities to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Imitate The Love Of Christ

TODAY’S VERSE
Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.
Ephesians 5:1-2

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You have heard it said, “Imitation is the best form of flattery.” Have you ever watched a child imitate their father or mother? They are so serious. They pick up subtle nuances that we would never expect them to. They do not judge; they just imitate what was acted out before them. This is what we have been asked to do. We are to imitate the love of Christ. We are to love the way He loved. Paul describes that kind of love. He says love is patient, kind, not jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love doesn’t demand its own way, is not irritable, and doesn’t keep a record of wrongdoing. Love endures, doesn’t lose faith, never gives up, and is always hopeful. If we want to imitate Christ, we must love. Might Christ help us imitate His love today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, help me to imitate You in everything I do. Help me especially love the way You love. Guide, direct, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I can follow Your example with those I meet today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Servant of the Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:38

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a shock it must have been to Mary. First, to see an angel would have been an incredible experience. But to have that angel say that you would have a baby through Immaculate Conception and that the baby would be God in the flesh would have been incomprehensible. But instead of trying to get her mind around it, Mary let her faith understand. In love, trust, and obedience, she submitted to the word of God through the angel. How did she do it? A better question may be, “Why did she submit to such an inconceivable experience?” She could say, “Let it be to me according to your word,” because she was confident in who she was. Before this ever happened, she had made up her mind that she was a servant of the Lord. What a difference it makes in our life when that issue is settled. You see, the word “No” and “Lord” cannot go together. The only possible answer to the Lordship of Christ is, “Yes, Your will be done.” Today, come to God as young Mary did. Say, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I desire Your will in my life. Like Mary, I come to You today and say, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
AMEN

Care and Share

TODAY’S VERSE
Do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing?
I Corinthians 11:22 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul was concerned about the selfish practices of some of those that were coming to their Christian fellowship and worship service. They were being gluttons, getting drunk and totally ignoring the needs of the poor that were there. It was a form of discrimination that angered Paul and brought shame to Jesus Himself. Paul wrote to them saying that humiliating the poor by ignoring their needs, flaunting their riches in front of them and not having compassion on them was the same as despising the church and bringing disgrace upon it. God cares for the poor and needy. The question is, “Do we?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for ignoring those in need and bringing shame to You and Your church. Help me to care and share the way that brings glory to Your name.
AMEN

A Big Challenge

TODAY’S VERSE
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
James 1:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some passages of scripture are more challenging to live out than others. We can read, “Love one another,” and go away, not doing anything. We deceive ourselves or, at best, let ourselves off the hook because it is not specific enough. I can believe I am “loving” someone and be way off base. However, James writes today’s verse fairly straightforwardly. He says that we need to be quick to listen to others. We need to wait before we speak. Then he adds, be very slow at getting mad. How better life would be if we followed James’ wisdom. But just in case we don’t understand how serious he is, James adds this admonition, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” So today, let’s do what the word says and be quick to listen, slow to speak , and slow to become angry.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to be quick to listen, slow to speak , and slow to become angry.
AMEN

Your Work

TODAY’S VERSE
I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Philippians 1:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God finishes what He started. And here is the good news, God started a good work in you! He began it before He created the world. The Bible says that you are His masterpiece created for His good works. Be encouraged, for you are a work in progress, and He is not finished with you yet! Seek His will. Get out of yourself and live for Him. Ask Him, “Lord what do you want me to do?” Remember, He has begun a work in you, He desires to continue it. Today, let Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for choosing me to work for You. Help me live out this Holy calling You have created me for. I give You my life, Lord, so please work in and through me for Your glory. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Loving Fellowship

TODAY’S VERSE
We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through.
I Thessalonians 3:2-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Fellowship is critical to living our Christian life. Paul sent Timothy to the Thessalonians to encourage them in their faith and strengthen them. Godly fellowship can do that. How seriously do you take your responsibility as a brother or sister in Christ? How important do you see your role when it comes to those God has put in your life? Part of your responsibility as a disciple of Christ is to be Christ to those around you. You have an enormous God-given capacity to make a difference. God has put you in the lives of those around you so you can strengthen them, encourage them in their faith and keep them from being shaken by all the troubles they are going through. After all, isn’t that what God has done for you?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me be conscious of those around me. Help me look for opportunities to encourage others in their faith, give them the strength to move on, and keep them from being shaken by all the troubles they are going through. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

His Love Makes Us Love

TODAY’S VERSE
For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
Psalms 103:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you considered how much God loves you? Knowing and experiencing His compassion changes us. It is the foundation from which we mature. It is the frame of reference from which we draw compassion. Knowing God’s love helps us love others. We can be patient with others when we understand what David means when he writes, “He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.” We can forgive others when we believe, “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” Knowing and experiencing God’s love for us empowers us to love more. Oh, to know the riches of His mercy, the depths of His grace, and the magnificence of His love. These are the pearls of great price. Today, behold the wonder of His compassion and contemplate His goodness toward you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, how I thank You for Your unfailing love toward me. Thank You for not punishing me for my sins or dealing harshly with me as I deserve. How I praise You for removing my sins as far from me as the east is from the west. Thank You for Jesus, my Savior. Help me love others in the same way. In His name, I pray.
AMEN

His Servant

TODAY’S VERSE
And the Lord replied, “A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them.”
Luke 12:42 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus has called you to follow Him. But do you understand that this means you are to be His servant here on earth? Do you take seriously the tremendous privilege and responsibility that comes with that? Your first and foremost job on earth is to discern His will every day and then do it. He wants you to be faithful in following Him, taking the tasks He has given you with all seriousness and sensibility. Today, decide that He is Lord of your life and you are His servant. Commit to being His faithful and responsible servant managing all He gives you to do. This indeed is your noble calling. And praise God, what He calls you to do; He will empower and equip you to do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for calling me to be Your servant. Help me be faithful in living this out. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
