Don’t Be Deceived

TODAY’S VERSE
You say, “I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!” And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.
Revelation 3:17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to deceive ourselves. Look at the Pharisees. They thought they were doing everything God required of them to be holy, and yet Jesus constantly pointed out how far they had missed the target of true Holiness. It was that way with the church in Laodicea. In Revelations, it says they were rich and had many things and felt they didn’t need a thing. However, God pointed out to them that they were deceived. In reality, they were spiritually wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. What about us? How can we avoid becoming deceived? We must spend time with God. We open ourselves to hear His voice, read His word, and spend time in introspection. We humble ourselves before God, spend time with Him, and listen to His leading. When we do, He will guide us. He will correct us. He will help us discern what we need to change. Today, ask God to make you aware of your spiritual condition. Might we pray what David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me be honest with myself and with You. Help me see if there is anything offensive in me and then lead me on a more spiritual path. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Perfect Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It’s easy to fret. We are a predicting machine. We are always observing, calculating, and predicting the future. Trouble is that much of the time, our predictions of doom and gloom are wrong. All the worry, fretting, and precautions are for naught. Most of what we worry about doesn’t happen. But look at all the time wasted. Look at the lost opportunities for joy and peace. Our depression looks at the past. Our anxiety looks at the future. We forget to live in the now. That is why Isaiah said that we should fix our thoughts on God. If we want to experience God’s perfect peace, we need to trust in God. The way we trust in Him is to focus on His love, His strength, His ability. When we focus on His love and power, our worries will pale in comparison. He will keep us in His peace. Like a person sailing a sailboat, when the winds come up and the waves toss us back and forth, keep your eyes on the shore and constantly re-correct your course. You will reach your destination.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, when I begin to worry, help me correct my thoughts and meditate on Your love and power. Help me fix my eyes on You and put my trust in You. Thank You, Lord, that the result will be Your peace.
AMEN

My Own Eye

TODAY’S VERSE
And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t agree with everything Freud wrote. There is, however, one of his observations that I think has some truth to it. Freud wrote about “projection,” the action of pointing out faults in others that we have ourselves.” Have you ever caught yourself criticizing someone and suddenly realized that you exhibit the same behavior? Jesus warned us about pointing out other people’s faults and ignoring our own. He said not to point out the little failings in other people while we have huge issues to deal with in our own lives. He mastered the use of hyperbole by comparing a speck in another person’s eye while we have this massive beam in our own. How funny this must have sounded to His audience, yet how true! We so often take offense at other’s shortcomings when we have glaring inconsistencies in our own lives. Today, let us examine ourselves. Let us come before God and ask Him to point out our own “sins” and deal with them before we worry about someone else’s behavior.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for judging others. Help me to bring myself to you and allow Your Holy Spirit to work on my behavior. Lord, make me more like You.
AMEN

Dual Citizenship

TODAY’S VERSE
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.
Ephesians 1:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We live in two worlds. Yes, we are here on earth, but our life in Christ exists in the heavenly realm, where our spiritual blessings come from. God decided this destiny for us a long time ago. Paul writes, “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.” We are a product of God’s sovereign will, and He has chosen to bless us with every spiritual blessing. Blessings like forgiveness, grace, peace, joy, the fruit of the Spirit. These are Spiritual gifts for us to enjoy here and now, sent from the very throne of God. We are united with Christ, and this union is the intertwining of both worlds, so we can say boldly with Paul, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.” Today, might the realization of your Heavenly citizenship bring you joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You, Father, for creating and blessing me with every Spiritual blessing. I know that these are gifts from Your very throne and that You determined to bless me before the world was even made. Thank You for making me part of Your plan. Thank You for Your eternal love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, it’s not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me; I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can improve my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship when we should pray for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes, we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then waiting to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life-changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You honestly and openly. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.
AMEN

Love Others

TODAY’S VERSE
While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and ‘sinners’ came and ate with him and his disciples.
Matthew 9:10 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So often, we forget that God loves all of humanity. Jesus exemplified this. We get so caught up in our Churches, small groups, and Bible studies, our own subculture, that we can’t remember how to relate to those outside the church. Jesus expects us to be good neighbors. He desires that we share His love with those who don’t know Him. The Pharisees did not get it. They were offended that He ate with “sinners.” In response to their distain Jesus said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” There are people all around us in need. Broken hearts, addictions, depressed, lonely, angry, poor, hungry. Wonderful people, needing someone to stop and show mercy and love. Someone to invite them in and eat with them. Someone to be their friend. God has called you and me to be that someone. Today, let Jesus love someone through you. Look around and ask God who He wants you to befriend.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your love and mercy in my life. Help me go and give the same to others. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Your Own Journey

TODAY’S VERSE
Peter asked Jesus, ‘What about him, Lord?’ Jesus replied, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.’
John 21:21-22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life is a journey with many twists and turns. And it is different for each of us. We all travel different roads. If we are going to live the way He desires, we must be willing to follow Him. In his book “Sacred Companions”, David Benner writes, “It is impossible to specify precisely the route that has to be followed in a soul’s journey of transformation. This is because rather than following a map, in this journey we follow a person – Jesus. Jesus does not tell us where to go; He simply asks us to follow Him.” Jesus compared us to sheep. He said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” When Peter worried whether John’s journey was going to be similar to His, Jesus rebuked Peter and said, “What is that to you? As for you, follow me.” It is the same for us today. We don’t need to be concerned with others and what God has for them. All we have to do is get to know God, understand His purposes for us, and begin to follow Him. Today, obey His command to “follow me” and seek God’s direction for your journey.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me follow You. Give me the wisdom, courage, and understanding I need to participate in the journey You have for me.
AMEN

Praise God With Your Whole heart

TODAY’S VERSE
Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise His Holy name.
Psalms 103:1

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to live day by day and never really take the time to praise God. Part of this is because we have relegated worship and praise to one hour a week. We have segmented our lives with spirituality being only a tiny part. Even when we participate at church in corporate worship, it is often just an intellectual assent. The words barely sink in. It is not wholeheartedly. This is not the way God intended our worship to be. Instead, God wants us to praise Him with everything inside us. David wrote, “Let ALL that I am praise the Lord!” This includes our emotions, knowledge, and personality. He wants us to praise Him with our “whole” hearts. It is not a “half hearted” affair. God wants our all. Everything we are and hope to be. Today, praise God for all that He is. Praise Him for what He has done. Praise Him with everything you have; praise Him with your whole heart. Truly God is worthy!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come now to praise Your Holy name. I praise You for all that You are. I praise You from my whole heart. I sincerely love You and praise You with everything inside me. Praise You Lord!
AMEN

You Have Value

TODAY’S VERSE
So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.
Matthew 10:31 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We are valuable to God! Why is it that I wrestle with that so much? Why can’t I accept that God’s love defines my value, not my performance, material belongings, or status? I have value because God says I do! The lack of believing in our value causes us to create a false self. In “The Deeper Journey,” M. Robert Mulholland Jr. writes, “As our false self manages our life, we fear that we might not be valued. If our false self’s identity is rooted in our performance, then our value must be rooted in how well we perform. – To the extent our false self guides our life, we fear others. Life with others is a constant threat to our false self. – Others are constant threats to that fragile structure we have created to provide ourselves with identity, meaning, value, and purpose.” Jesus came to declare how valuable we are. He would not have wasted His life and died the horrible death He did for something of little value. No, He came to redeem the most valuable thing to Him in the whole universe, the human race. Today, know that God loves you. Know that you are valued by Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for loving me and creating me with value. Might the thought that I am valuable to You change my life today and set me free from the fear and bondage of trying to earn Your love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Love God

TODAY’S VERSE
You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.
Luke 10:27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God created us for a relationship with Himself. His purpose is for us to love Him. Specifically, we are to love Him with all our heart, soul, and strength. But how do we do this? In his book “Sacred Companions” Dr. Benner writes, “To know God we must think of Him, not simply about Him. We must learn to spend time gazing on Him, being still before Him and focused on Him. And we must learn to listen to Him. These disciplines of loving attention form the basis of the development of a love relationship with Him.” But what do we do if we find it hard to love God with all our hearts? Dr. Benner suggests, “God doesn’t want me to try to be more loving. He wants me to absorb His love so that it flows out from me. And so I return again to knowing myself as deeply loved by God. I meditate on His love, allowing my focus to be on Him and His love for me, not me and my love for Him.” Today, let your love for God grow by being still before Him and focusing on His incredible love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your love for me. Help me to understand it more fully so I can learn to love You with my whole heart.
AMEN
