Overcomer

TODAY’S VERSE
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
I John 4:4 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The early church was persecuted for their faith. Many were ostracized from society, living in poverty and starvation. Others were imprisoned. Many were martyred for their faith. But ironically, this persecution caused the church to flourish. It forced them to band together and have a bond of love that the world has never seen again. It was an infectious witness to those around them. Instead, what was more of a spiritual challenge for the church was Satan’s battle for their mind. It was an all-out assault on the truth of the Gospel. When this passage was written, many people challenged the core of Christianity. Some said that the death of Jesus was not enough and that we still had to obey the Jewish law. Others said that Christ was not the real Messiah, or Christ was not the Son of God. Today, it is the same story. In his book, “Bondage Breaker,” Neil Anderson reminds us that our battle with Satan is not a power struggle but a truth encounter. Satan comes to us as the father of lies. We are assaulted by one lie after another. Doubts and half-truths constantly attack our minds. But we need not despair. Why? Because John wrote that we are from God and have overcome all these falsehoods and lies of Satan. How is that so? Because Christ in you is greater than Satan and his spirits of deception that is in the world. Today, when lies, doubts, and half-truths come your way, resist them. Tell them to flee from your mind and focus on the more incredible thing, the truth of Christ and His love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You, Lord, for Your strength and power. Thank You for protecting me. But also, Lord, thank You for Your truth and the fact that You are greater than Satan and his lies. Lord, fill me with Your truth.
AMEN

Offering

TODAY’S VERSE
Accept my prayer as incense offered to you, and my upraised hands as an evening offering.
Psalms 141:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are many things you can do with your life. You have skills, knowledge, and experiences that will afford you many different and unique occupational opportunities. However, there is one vocation that God has put in the hearts of all who follow Him. It does not require skill, special knowledge, certain aptitudes, or pedigree. It only requires a heart that loves God. He has called you to be a Priest. You have been given the sacred privilege to come before God in humble adoration. Dressed in a robe, cleansed by the blood of Jesus Himself, you stand before God, forgiven and accepted as His child. There you are before God, your prayers received by Him as an incense offering, bringing Him extreme pleasure. As you praise Him, your hands reach up to Him in a Holy embrace, received as an offering of love and praise. There is nothing God desires more. No offering has ever been so precious to God as your adoration, praise, and prayers. Come today as God’s Priest and offer Him your love. Come into His presence, love Him, talk to Him, adore Him – it is your sacred privilege.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come before You now with a humble heart. Hear my prayers. Receive them as a sacred offering. I lift up my hands to You in love and adoration. Please accept my praise as a Holy sacrifice to You in all Your majesty. I worship You today as my Lord and my God.
AMEN

Oblivious To God’s Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Every time I visit Southern California, I am overwhelmed by the number of people I meet there who seem oblivious to the fact that they live in paradise. The mountains, sun, and surf are all around them, but they don’t see it. All they see is the everyday struggles of life. It is like that with God’s grace. We can get so bogged down with life that we don’t see all the grace that God has brought into our lives. Not so with the Apostle John. Instead John starts out his Gospel with an overwhelming appreciation for the grace that God has for us. He writes that we have all received grace from God manifested in “one gracious blessing after another.” He introduces this manifesto of grace in contrast to the Law that was given through Moses. Moses gave us the Law, but Jesus gave us God’s grace. This grace was manifested in God’s unfailing love and faithfulness toward us through the death and resurrection of Christ. What about you? How is your life? Are you experiencing God’s unfailing love? Are you aware of His many blessings? Do you appreciate His faithfulness toward you? Or have you been like the person walking a few miles from the beach, totally unaware of all its beauty and serenity? Today, stop and take the time to consciously acknowledge God’s many blessings given to you. Rejoice in His wonderful grace and faithfulness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for taking Your love and faithfulness for granted. Thank You for Your unfailing love and grace toward me.
AMEN

Mockery

TODAY’S VERSE
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” And they spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it. When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.
Matthew 27:28-31 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who were these guys? Were they regular working guys with families to support? Were they patriotic servants of Rome? Were they just some guys trying to do their job? Whoever they were, they acted according to their beliefs. They weren’t followers of Jesus. They did not ascribe to His teachings. Instead, they mocked His claims to be King of the Jews. They beat Him, spit on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. But we are believers. And yet, I can’t help but ask, “How do I treat Jesus?” No, I don’t spit on Him, but do I follow His commands? I haven’t hit Him with a stick, but do I confess my sin and keep a clean conscience with Him? I don’t put a crown of thorns on His head, but do I worship Him in daily prayer? I don’t mockingly call him “King of the Jews,” but do I make Him king of my life today? The question is, “Who hurts Jesus more, the soldiers who beat Him, spit on Him, and led Him away to be crucified, or the believer who ignores Him and lives as if Christ never existed at all? Today, remember He died for you, He gladly took all the pain and mocking so you could know Him in a deep and personal way. Today, worship and serve Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have mocked You with my life. Forgive me for the times I have spit upon You with my indifference. I confess my apathy and ask for You to rekindle a fire in my heart today. I want to follow You. I want to live for You.
AMEN

What Do You Treasure?

TODAY’S VERSE
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:21

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Where are your priorities? What is important to you? You can pretend to believe certain spiritual truths, but what you treasure usually gives you away. Jesus is warning us that it is easy to get caught up in this life and not really look at the whole picture. We are not just part of this physical world. We are part of a much larger system. We are part of the Spiritual realm. We are connected with eternity and, therefore, need to integrate what we believe in this life with a Heavenly perspective. The question that we need to ask ourselves is, “What do we really care for?” “What is important to us?” “What do we treasure?” When we answer these questions, we will find our heart. Then, we need to ask ourselves a tough question. “Does our heart reflect Christ’s values or the worlds?” If we are going to follow Christ and be His representative in this world, then our heart needs to reflect on what is important to Him. Today, might we check our heart’s priority and realign what’s important to us to be more in tune with Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father help me love what You love. Help me live with Your priorities foremost in my thinking. Help live for You today.
AMEN

What Do You Want?

TODAY’S VERSE
What do you want me to do for you?
Mark 10:49-51 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Today’s verse was from one of the first passages I ever preached on. I was a teenager giving a gospel message. I still remember the impact this simple passage had on me. Here was this blind man sitting by the road, and he heard that Jesus was coming by. Nothing could shut him up. He started shouting out to Jesus. The disciples tried to make him quiet down, but Jesus told them to bring the man to Him. I love what happens next. Jesus looks at him and says to the blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man simply answers, “I want to see.” What appealed to me then as a teenager still appeals to me decades later. It was the sincerity of Jesus and the invitation to tell Him what the blind man wanted. This is the same Jesus that we pray to. It is the same heart of Christ that bids us to come to Him. It is the same power available that asks such an open-ended question. Today, see Him passing your way. Sit before Him and answer His question, “What do you want me to do for you?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, I thank You for coming my way today. I thank You for caring so much for me that You would ask me what I need from You. I come silently before You and share my request. – Thank You, Lord, for hearing the desire of my heart.
AMEN

My Own Eye

TODAY’S VERSE
And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I don’t agree with everything Freud wrote. There is, however, one of his observations that I think has some truth to it. Freud wrote about “projection,” the action of pointing out faults in others that we have ourselves.” Have you ever caught yourself criticizing someone and suddenly realized that you exhibit the same behavior? Jesus warned us about pointing out other people’s faults and ignoring our own. He said not to point out the little failings in other people while we have huge issues to deal with in our own lives. He mastered the use of hyperbole with the comparison of a speck in another person’s eye while we have this massive beam in our own. How funny this must have sounded to His audience, yet how true! We often take offense at other’s shortcomings when we have glaring inconsistencies in our own lives. Today, let us examine ourselves. Let us come before God and ask Him to point out our own “sins” and deal with them before we worry about someone else’s behavior.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for judging others. Help me to bring myself to you and allow Your Holy Spirit to work on my behavior. Lord, make me more like You.
AMEN

Get Right With God

TODAY’S VERSE
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
Romans 3:22-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Are you right with God? This is a serious question, yet most of us don’t spend much time thinking about it. Somewhere along the line, we have developed our own theory of how to be right with God. It usually involves doing some good, at least more good than we think we have done wrong. But the Bible tells of a different plan. It talks of a God who loves us and has made a way that we can be forgiven. It shares how receiving Christ as our personal Savior will bring us into right standing with Him. By putting our faith in the sacrifice of His son, Jesus, on the cross, we become God’s child and are born again into His family. This brings us into a whole new relationship with God, and we are made right with Him. Today, you can have this relationship. Accept Christ as your personal Savior, ask Him to forgive your sins, and make you His child. Put your faith in Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross for you and you will have a right relationship with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I accept Christ’s death on the cross for me and ask You to forgive all my sins. I accept Christ as my Savior, and put my faith in Him. Take my life and help me live it for You.
AMEN

The Joy Of God’s Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
You have given him the joy of being in your presence.
Psalms 21:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a gift. God has given us the capacity to experience His presence. Like an antenna picks up the signal sent to it, God has given us His Holy Spirit, enabling us to know Him. But no antenna in the world would pick up a signal if none were sent. This passage is more about God than us. It is God that sends His presence out to us. It is God who desires our fellowship. Does that grab you? Let me say it again, the God of the universe not only allows us an audience with Him, He desires it! And when we respond, we find out what David knew. There is extreme joy in being in His presence.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for seeking me out. Thank You for allowing me to enjoy Your presence. I pray that I may experience the joy of Your presence more and more.
AMEN

Can or Can’t?

TODAY’S VERSE
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can or can’t? They are two opposite pathways. They take you to very different places. “Can’t” takes you into the territory of doubt, despair, and eventually hopelessness. We can’t; they can’t, and soon, we believe that God can’t. Paul knew this. That is why he spent his life encouraging unbelievers to follow Christ and believers to increase their trusting Christ with their whole life. And Paul was the consummate example! He trusted Christ for everything. And everything is what he expected. That is why he proclaimed, “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Today, decide to join Paul. Make your motto, “Through Christ I can.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me change my “can’t” to “cans.” Help me trust in Your strength and not mine. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
