Joy and Quiet

TODAY’S VERSE
My heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. – You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.
Psalms 16:9, 11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We were made for rhythms of joy and quiet. David is a perfect example. His heart was full of joy and peaceful rest. But what was his secret? Was it his circumstances? Was it his wealth? Was it the adoration of thousands of followers? No, David’s joy and peace came from his enjoying God’s presence. In God’s presence, David felt a love and grace that overwhelmed him with joy and reverent rest. You can experience the same. Today, spend time in God’s presence. Meditate on His love for you. Let His presence bring you the same joy and quiet that it gave David.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You now. I want to experience the joy and quiet peace of Your presence.
AMEN

Approaching God

TODAY’S VERSE
Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.
Ephesians 3:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How do you approach God? It often depends on your presuppositions of who God is. Is He some mean, unreasonable disciplinarian who is watching your every move? Is God some detached, non-involved creator who has no desire to relate to you? Perhaps your view of God is that of a Santa Claus you give your wish list to and hope to get nice things in return. Possibly worse than any of these, the God you worship is unpredictable. You never know if and when God will show up and what kind of mood He will be in. What we believe about God has much to do with how we come to Him. In today’s passage, Paul is writing about his faith in God. He says that because of Christ, we can come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. The author of Hebrews says it best. He writes, “So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” So today, rejoice and join Paul in saying, “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your love for me. Thank You for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which have made it possible for me to come boldly to You. So I come to You now, Lord. Fill me with Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name.

The Gift Of Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a gift! Jesus said He was leaving us with a gift of peace of mind and heart. What a gift that we so desperately need. In his book, The Way Of The Warrior, Erwin McManus writes, “With simplicity and wisdom, he cuts between the two things that steal our peace, for the greatest enemies of the peace within are worry and fear. – While worry will rob our joy, fear will steal our freedom – When we are anxious, we lose our strength. When we are afraid, we lose our courage.” Who of us doesn’t worry? Who of us doesn’t have fear? Jesus said that in this world, we will have tribulation! But in today’s verse, Jesus also says that we will have His peace. Paul writes, “ Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.  Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Coming to God in prayer is the solution for all our anxiety and troubling fears. It is a wonderful gift from Jesus. The only trouble with a gift is that you have to receive it. Don’t let Jesus’ gift to you sit there unopened! Lay down your worries and fears. Accept His peace today.  

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, You know how I worry and fear. Today, I come and lay all my worries and fears before you. Take my anxiety; I accept Your gift of peace of mind and heart.

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, it’s not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me; I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can be better at my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship when we should be praying for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then wait to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life-changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest, and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You honestly and openly. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.

Who Is Your God?

TODAY’S VERSE
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
Psalms 18:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What you believe about God makes a difference. Not in God, but in the way you live. Your comprehension of God has everything to do with your faith and hope in this world. Look at what David believed. He saw God as his rock, fortress, savior, protection, shield, power, and safety. How do you think this affected his attitude during a crisis? Time and experience had taught David well. All the trials he went through only made him stronger and deepened his beliefs about the God who is there. The God who cares. The God who is able. What is God to you? Is He your rock, fortress, and protection? Do you come to Him when the world gets too harsh? Is God your power? Can you trust in Him to supply all that you need for each and every day? David felt so, and so can we. Today, step out in faith. Ask God to reveal Himself to you and give you a fresh faith like David had. When you do, you will find God to be all that you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please reveal Yourself to me. Help me see what David saw. Help me see You as my rock, fortress, savior, protection, shield, power and safety. Help me step out in faith and trust You today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Wholeheartedly

TODAY’S VERSE
Acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.
I Chronicles 28:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to say that we are a Christian. It’s another to follow Him wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, in many cases, we fall short. But that is not the way God intended it to be. We have been called to follow Christ in how we think, feel, and behave. David knew the seriousness of following God. When he commissioned his son, Solomon, to build the Temple, he challenged Solomon to live Godly. King David told him to acknowledge God as the Lord of everything and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and a willing mind. God doesn’t want pretense; He wants sincerity and authenticity. That is why He searches our hearts and motives. Might our prayer be that of David’s at the end of Psalm 139. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Today, decide to serve Him wholeheartedly.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the opportunity to serve You. Help me to be true to You and to serve You with wholehearted devotion and a willing mind. In Jesus’ Name.

Experience The Love Of God

TODAY’S VERSE
Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?
Luke 24:32 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When was the last time you experienced the presence of God? I mean more than just head knowledge, but a time you really felt His presence? You see, we were meant to know God, not just know about Him. Isn’t that the way it should be with someone you love? Isn’t real love more than “head” knowledge? Love was meant to be experienced, not just studied. It’s the same with God. Stop and close your eyes, and focus on a time you felt the presence of God. When you get that image, relive it again in your mind. Do you remember what it was like? Did your heart burn within you? Paul writes, “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” He says that knowing God’s love surpasses knowledge. If that doesn’t warm you up, what will? We were meant to experience God or as Paul says it, “be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” I pray that today, you will be conscious of His presence and have a deep and meaningful relationship with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I long to know You more deeply and intimately. Make me conscious of Your presence. Reveal more of Yourself to me. I pray that I may grasp all the love You have for me. In Jesus’ name.

Surrender

TODAY’S VERSE
Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God.
Romans 6:12-13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes, we emphasize the wrong thing. We try to stop the darkness instead of turning on the light. We punish negative behavior and never reward what is done right. We save our money so tightly that we don’t spend money on great opportunities that come our way. It seems that Paul was going to do the same thing. He writes, “Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin.” Now, how hard is that? How joyful will that experience be? Don’t get me wrong, Paul is entirely correct! We must watch sin in our lives. We dare not get loose with our lives and live out sinful whims. But there is a better way. Paul finishes his thoughts by saying, “Instead, give yourselves completely to God.” How much better is that? There is real wisdom here, a real balance. If we give ourselves completely to God, will He not help us with the sin issue? Won’t the Holy Spirit guide and direct us toward a righteous life? It is like the old saying, “Love God and do as you please.” If we truly love God, we will only do what honors Him. So today, let’s combat sin in our lives differently. Let’s resist sin by completely giving ourselves and everything we do and think today to God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You today and surrender to Your control. Guide me, direct me, help me live the way You want me to. I give myself completely to You.
AMEN

Recorrect Your Course

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness.
Psalm 141:4

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever noticed that you can start something correctly, but over time, things change? It can get that way with life. I remember going across a big lake in a canoe. It was in late October and cold and raining. The house was across on the other side of the lake, but you could barely see it. I started toward it but soon couldn’t see it anymore. I panicked, wondering what was wrong. I finally looked way to my left, and there it was. The wind and waves had driven me off course. Even with all my paddling, I was going in the wrong direction. I had to recorrect my course. I had to do it several times to make it to warmth and shelter from the storm. It is easy to get off course in life. The waves and wind of everyday circumstances can take us where we don’t want to go. Today, come to God, get in the word, pray. Spend time recorrecting your course.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how my heart can drift from You. Help me today recorrect my course. I need You to navigate my life.
AMEN

Doing His Will

TODAY’S VERSE
Now may the God of peace—may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.
Hebrews 13:20-21 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Isn’t it exciting to know that God is more interested in you doing good than you are? He is so invested in your success that He has equipped you with everything you need to do what He wants you to do. In fact, the author of Hebrews says that God will produce in you every good thing that is pleasing to Him through the power of Jesus Christ! No wonder the author could finish this passage by saying, “All glory to Him forever and ever! Amen.” Today, you can bring glory to God by living how He has called you to. Ask Him to help you do His will. Ask Him to provide all the power you need to do every good thing that pleases Him today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for equipping me with everything I need to do Your will. Thank You for Your power that You make available to me so I can do every good thing that is pleasing to You. Give me the strength to live for You this day. Give me the wisdom to know what to do, the courage to follow through and the faith to trust You with the outcome.
AMEN
