Choose Today

 TODAY’S VERSE
“Choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Choose today whom you will serve. Many people treat Christianity as if it was a “once for all” decision. We decide to receive Christ as our Savior and that is it. We are “born again” and then we go on auto pilot. But the term “born” indicates that it is the beginning of a life long process not the end! Christianity starts with a single choice but is followed by a life time of choosing to live for Him. The trouble is our life becomes such a routine that we make choices out of habit. Worse, we don’t even see our behavior as a choice any more. We are just responding as if we were programmed. We need to wake up to the fact that we do have choices. If you have been going down the wrong road you can stop today and CHOOSE to go a different direction. Have you been depressed? The good news is that CHOOSE to be happy. Have you struggled with wrong choices? You can CHOOSE to come to God with your problem and He will help you make the right choices. You have a choice because God gives it to you. All the power of God is available and waiting for you to make a choice. What will you choose today?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you that I do have a choice. I can choose to follow you every day. Help me see all the opportunities ahead of me. Help me to see all of the hundreds of actions I make every day as choices. Thank you that with your Holy Spirit I am not powerless, I don’t have to be the victim of negative habits. I pray that today Father, you will help me, guide me, and give me strength to choose wisely in everything I do. In Jesus Name.
AMEN

God Loves Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.”
I John 4:10

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is one thing to “say” you love someone. It is another, to really love them. You see the real language of love is not found in some poetic phrase. The language of love is in our actions. Love needs to be a verb. So when I say, “God loves you!” I am referring to much more than some simple sentiment. I am referring to the fact that you are important to God. You are special to Him. Paul shares that “God demonstrates His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” When we are at our worst, when we are farthest from Him, His love for us is still there. God sent Jesus to be the sacrifice for our sinfulness, so we could have a legitimate relationship with Him. So we could experience His love and begin to express our love back to Him. Have you received His love? Have you made it personal? If not acknowledge the fact that He loves you today. Thank Him for providing a way for you to come before His Holiness, cleansed, forgiven and as His child. Jesus said it best, “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, God gave the right to become children of God.”
If you believe that He died on the cross for you, then receive His death as a substitute for you by acknowledging it as a fact and thanking Him for it today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I have heard the words, “God loves me” before. Today I want to make it personal. I want you to know how thankful I am that you sent Jesus to be my substitute, so I could come before you Holy and blameless. So that I could be “born again” as your child. Today, I receive these words into my heart, “God loves me!” Help me to really understand it and all the joy that it brings. In Jesus name I pray.
AMEN

Rejected Wisdom

TODAY’S VERSE
“This is what the LORD says: ‘Stop at the crossroads and look around.
Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.’ But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’”
Jeremiah 6:16

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.”
James 1:5-8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a bitter truth in these passages. The truth, that so often we are just playing spiritual games with God. We come to a crossroad in life where we need to ask for wisdom. We go through the spiritual motion of wanting His wisdom, but as soon as the pressure is off, as soon as we think we are in the clear, we choose to go our own way again. Or as James suggests we ask for wisdom but all the while we are still hanging on to what we want. We are torn between God and the world. We waver and our own worldly desire usually wins.
How can we break this cycle? How can we really understand God’s wisdom for our life and then follow it?
I believe it is my falling down at His feet, telling Him the truth, asking for forgiveness and then asking Him to direct us, guide us and empower us to follow Him. It is by spending time with God, listening to Him and accepting the guidance of His Holy Spirit. We follow Him one crossroad at a time. We live for Him, one request for wisdom at a time. We start to say “Yes” to Jesus one day at a time. Why not start today?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, so often I have good intentions. I want to follow you. I ask for wisdom. I come to the crossroads with all the intention in the world to go down the right road and then something happens. I get torn inside and start to doubt. I start to waver, to be tempted to go another way and pretty soon I am far from the wisdom I so desperately sought. Help me Lord. I want to follow you. I ask you to guide me today. Help me to have your wisdom for today and follow it. Today Lord, I choose to follow you.
AMEN

The Victory Is His

TODAY’S VERSE
“Perhaps the LORD will help us, for nothing can hinder the LORD. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”
I Samuel 14:6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We all have our wars to fight. Saul and his 600 men were trying to defeat the mighty Philistine army with thousands of soldiers. It was a bitter war. Saul and his 600 men were pinned down and trapped. Saul’s son, Jonathan summoned his armor bearer and felt that they sould go and fight the army. His famous battle cry was, “Perhaps the LORD will help us, for nothing can hinder the LORD. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” With faith, Jonathon and his armor bearer went to the Philistine outpost and took on twenty soldiers. Then something miraculous happened. The Philistines vast army in the camp became confused, panicked and afraid. God added an earthquake and all the army fled being chased by the Israelites.
In the midst of difficult times, we need to be reminded that, “Nothing can hinder the Lord.” When the odds seem overwhelmingly against us we must remember, “He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” Today, count on the Lord. Let Him help you in your own private conflict. He can win the battle!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, you know my personal battles. You know how overwhelmed I can get. Lord, I know that nothing can hinder you. You can indeed give me personal victory whether I have many resources or only a few! Today I submit myself and my situation to you and ask that you would provide for me in miraculous ways.
AMEN

A Conversation With God

TODAY’S VERSE
“But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”
Micah 7:7

TODAY’S THOUGHT
He hears our prayers. He hears and the very fact that He hears assures us that He in turn answer us. Prayer is not a one way street. Prayer was never meant to be a list of demands or an message we leave on an answering machine. Prayer is a conversation. Leanne Payne in her book, Listening Prayer, writes, “That our God is faithful to hear and answer all prayer is something I want to shout from the housetop.” Dallas Willard in his book, Hearing God, writes, “A Biblical Christian is not just someone who holds certain beliefs about the Bible. He or she is also someone who leads the kind of life demonstrated in the Bible: a life of personal, intelligent interaction with God.”
We worship the God who listens. We serve the God who answers. Our God desires a conversation. Isn’t it time you really talked to Him. Today, talk to God. Share with Him your concerns, desires and hopes. But don’t just pray. Converse with Him. Ask Him questions and listen for answers.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I come to you to have a conversation. You have called me your “friend” so I come as a friend. As I pour out my heart to you, as I strike up a conversation, tune my heart to hear your reply. Fill my heart with your peace, joy and hope. Might I experience your loving presence during our time together. In Jesus Name I pray.
AMEN

The Battle Is In the Mind

TODAY’S VERSE
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5

“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Philippians 4:8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When it comes to the many struggles in life, the real battle is often in the mind. James writes, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (James 4:1) That is why Paul tells us to demolish those thoughts that stand against what God wants for us. We are in a Spiritual battle and need to take every stray thought captive and repent, correct it the way God would have us correct it. If I am hating someone, I need to capture the hateful thoughts, realize that they are wrong, ask forgiveness and choose not to hate. Paul also gives us a second way to win the victory in the battle for our mind. He instructs us to discipline our thinking so it focuses on thoughts that are worthy of praising God for. Those thoughts that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable and excellent. Anger, bitterness, hate, jealously, fear, anxiety; these negative emotions can literally kill us. They are joy robbers. The suck the life right out of us. Greed, selfishness, pride; thoughts that are worldly, keep us from living for God. The good news is that God has not left you powerless. You have a choice. Take responsibility for your thought life. Capture the negative thoughts and focus on the good ones. Today, choose your thoughts wisely.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, so much goes on in my head. Help me today dear Jesus, to bring every thought captive and realign them to where they are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable and excellent. In Your name I pray.
AMEN

Make Every Effort

TODAY’S VERSE
“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.”
Ephesians 4:2-3

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can you imagine if everyone in the church would take these words to heart? What a witness of God’s love we would be. Paul is sharing how we should behave as a church. He writes that we are to always be humble, gentle and patient with each other. This is not easy. That is why he says that we need to make allowance for each other’s faults and to make “every” effort to be united and bound together in peace.
How about today? Who is it that bothers you? Who gets under your skin? When you catch yourself talking bad about someone, who is it? What commitment can you make to be humble, gentle and patient with that person? What efforts can you put forth in the next week to keep yourself united with them in the Spirit? This is where it needs to start. May God grant you the courage and strength you will need today to step up and make every effort to be united and at peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I desire be to humble, gentle and patient with those that bother me. Help me focus on your love so I can make allowances for the faults of others. Help me Lord to make every effort to be united in the Spirit, binding myself with others with the bonds of peace.
AMEN

Anxiety or Peace?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:7

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Isaiah 26:3

TODAY’S THOUGHT
As hard as we try, we can’t control everything. Circumstances happen, situations arise, consequences catch up with us. Anxiety or peace? Because of God we do have a choice. God makes all the difference in the world! Peter tells us to cast all our care on God. I love the imagery. You throw something light. You cast something heavy. We are to take our heavy load of worry and anxiety, use all our strength and faith and cast it onto Jesus. Let Him take it. Why? Because He cares for us. Why? Because He is able to keep us in perfect peace. Isaiah shared the secret to peace. He said to fix our thoughts on God and trust Him. What is it that you are worried about today? Cast it onto Jesus. Trust Him with it. Fix your thoughts on His love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank you that I can cast all my cares on You. I thank you that you care for me and that you are able to keep me in perfect peace. Take my situation, I trust you with it. I choose to take my focus off my worries and fears and put it on you and your love. Give me your peace today.
AMEN

To Do Today

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
I Thessalonians 5:16-18

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Not sure what to do today? Don’t know which direction to go in or where to start? In today’s passage Paul has given us a tremendous “to do” list. In fact he is emphatic about our doing it. He uses the words, “always”, “continually” and “in all circumstances”. Look at what he says we should do. “Be joyful always!” We think of joy as an emotion but in fact many times joy is an act of the will. We choose to see the glass half full, the trip almost finished, hope right around the corner. We see hope and experience the presence of Christ in our life and choose joy! “Pray continually.” Prayer is more than an occasional ritual. It is the communication that comes out of a vibrant real relationship. It is a conversation with the living God that goes on all day. God really is with us and we talk to Him continually. “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Giving thanks is that expression of gratitude we give to God when we decide to give Him the glory for the good around us and trust Him with the bad. When things go right we praise and when we are not sure about our circumstances and are upset, it is the voice of reason that says, “I thank you God that you are trustworthy.” Today add to your list of things to do; being joyful, praying and giving thanks.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, above all else today, I choose to be joyful. I also commit myself to pray throughout the day as things come to my mind. And Father, today I will deliberately be conscious of giving you thanks in all my circumstances. Help me to this end I pray in Jesus name.
AMEN

Choices

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:4-6

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”
Hebrews 1:1

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are many choices to make in life. How do we integrate our faith into the major life decisions we make? First we see in this passage that we are to “trust in the Lord with all our heart.” This is more than “head knowledge.” It is experiential knowledge. This “knowing” has gone past our brain into our experience so that it has finally resided in our inner being. It is not a “blind faith” rather it is what the author of Hebrews calls “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” It is out of our relationship with God that we “seek His will in all we do” and God is faithful to lead us and show us which path to take.
What is it that you need help with? What is it that you need to decide? Seek God’s help today. Pray over the issue at hand. Seek counsel, apply wisdom, pray much and then allow Him to guide you. Let Him work in your heart and mind. He promises He will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, some decisions are so hard. I find myself so many times baffled at what to do. Situations where I have dug myself into a hole, consequences of other peoples sins, circumstances beyond my control, all of these have often left me rocking. Father, help me trust in you with all my heart today. Increase my faith. Impart your wisdom to me and lead me in the way I should go. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus.
AMEN
