Meditate

TODAY’S VERSE
“I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.”
Psalms 145:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I am sitting one hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean. And yet, with all the activity that this vacation has had so far I have yet to spend twenty minutes in front of it’s mighty power. Tonight I walked out the door and down the path and within seconds I could hear the pounding of the waves on the shore. Standing along a guard rail, I looked down at the water coming in wave after wave and lets it’s reminder of God’s mighty love and power fill my heart. Tomorrow I plan on sitting on the sand and just being there soaking it in. How is it we can be so close to something and not take the time to capture it’s essence? David knew the answer. We major on the minors. We don’t take the time to contemplate and muse on the important things in life. David wrote, “I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” David took the time to devote focused attention to God and His wonderful attributes. He took the time to pay attention to God. He dared to stop and reflect, to ponder on God’s almighty power, splendor and miracles. And when he did, he was a better man for it. You see focusing on God does not make God powerful, no more than my looking at the ocean makes it so majestic. It only allows us to see and know the mysteries of what has always been there. Today, don’t miss another moment. Don’t let another day go by without seeing and focusing on all that God is and all the love He has for you. He is majestic, He is full of glorious splendor and His miracles abound.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to know You and Your glorious splendor. Help me stop and meditate on You. Help me focus my attention, love and devotion toward You. Guide me into a deeper knowledge of You I pray.
AMEN

How Do You Wait?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.”
Psalms 37:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Waiting can be hard, especially when we find ourselves in difficult situations. The trouble is what we add to waiting. It is wait plus fretting; wait plus stewing; wait plus conniving; wait plus brooding. Instead, David adds God to the waiting. He says to be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him. That means if we are going to add anything to waiting,it should be wait plus faith; wait plus prayer; wait plus hope; wait plus the peace that passes all understanding. Is there something that you are having trouble waiting on? Are you fretting, stewing, conniving or brooding? If so, give it over to Jesus. Be still before Him and wait in faith, hope and peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, it is so hard to wait. Forgive me for fretting, stewing, conniving and brooding. Help me instead to trust You. I surrender my situation to You. Today I will wait in faith, hope and peace. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Wounded Healer

TODAY’S VERSE
“God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”
II Corinthians 1:3-4

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love the term “wounded healer.” It was coined by Henri Nouwen in his book by the same name. It conjures up the image of a person that comes along side of someone and shares “healing” with great understanding, compassion and empathy. Why? Because they have been in the same situation. They share the same wounds and scars. They know the other person’s pain. But Paul is going a step farther than just being a wounded healer. He is suggesting that we be a “healed healer!”  There is great empathy and compassion in being wounded and helping another with their wound, but besides empathy and compassion there is hope, health and wholeness offered by a healed healer. Paul states that God is the merciful father and the source of all comfort. As we come to Him and receive comfort, we are to go and give this same comfort to others. As God heals us, we share that healing. Should we be full of empathy? Yes, much so. Should we be compassionate? Yes, we of all people. Should we be patient, kind and understanding? If we are not, then we have forgotten that it was by His grace that we were healed. When God comforts us, we are grateful, humbled and full of joy. Make His comfort complete by comforting others in the same way. May we never forget His mercy. May we never forget to treat others in the same way He has treated us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, God of all comfort. Thank You for the many times You have comforted me. Forgive me for not being as compassionate and patient as I should toward others. Forgive me for forgetting how much You have done for me. Help me today to extend that same comfort to others that You have given to me. Help me love those that You bring into my path today in the same way that You love me.  In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Be Amazed

TODAY’S VERSE
“All the people were amazed and said to each other, ‘What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!”’
Luke 4:36 (NIV)
“When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”’

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Are you amazed yet? Not everyone was. In today’s passage when people heard Jesus’ teaching, witnessed His miracles, sensed His immense love, they ended up saying, “What authority and power!” And before Jesus left the earth and said “All authority was given to me,” it says that some people worshipped. But it also states that some doubted. Isn’t that just like us? We worship and we doubt. We trust and we fear. We have hope and we despair. What can make the difference? What can take us from doubt to worship? Spending time with Him. It was those that were with Him, watching and listening, that experienced His power and His authority. Those that “heard” Jesus say that all authority was His, well, they just heard it. Today, let yourself be amazed; spend time with Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I come today to be amazed. I want to know You, know Your love, know Your power. Open my eyes, open my heart to all that You are. I come and worship You.
AMEN

Praise Him Today

TODAY’S VERSE
“I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.”
Psalms 145:1-5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever praised the Lord? No, I mean really praised the Lord? It could have been a quiet, sweet praise that brought tears to your eyes. Perhaps it was a shout-out-loud, hand clapping exuberance. If you haven’t been praising the Lord lately, today would be a great time to start. David said that he praised God everyday. Why? Because David knew that God was worthy of his praise! We, too, can praise God. Just start to think of all the goodness in your life. Think of all that you have. Think of those most precious to you. Think of the fact that today you are alive and as long as you are alive, God has a purpose for you. If that is not enough, think of the fact that God loves you unconditionally. He has forgiven you of all the wrong you have ever done through the sacrificial death of His son. Finally, think of how almighty God is. Think of how awesome He is. His wisdom, majesty, power and greatness are without limit. So what is stopping you? Right now, stop and praise the Lord. Tell Him how much you love Him. Tell Him how great and majestic He is and how thankful you are to have a relationship with Him. He is worthy of our praise.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Almighty, glorious, everlasting, majestic God. I come now to bow before You. I come to praise Your Holy name. I come to lift up my voice from the depth of my soul and say, “Hallelujah ” I thank You for who You are and for what You have done in my life. I thank and praise You for all that I have and for all that I am. I thank You for Your love for me, for Your death on the cross for me, and for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. I praise You, God, for Your greatness. Truly, You are worthy of all my praise. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Powerful Possiblities

TODAY’S VERSE
“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.”
Ephesians 1:19-20

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How would it change your life if you really understood the power God has for you? Can you imagine someone only living on $10,000 a year when they had a million dollars given to them and placed in their bank account? It would be foolishness to have a million dollars and never understand all that you could do with it. Yet what must God think, when He has deposited into our life account His incredible power, and we never avail ourself of it; we only live on a fraction of what He has supplied us with? How different would our life be if we really begin to understand how He wants us to use His power? Pray today that God would open your eyes to all that He wants to do in your life through His powerful possibilities.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me to understand all the power You have for my life. Help me see how I am a steward of that power, how You want to use Your power in and through my life. Please, Lord, give me the faith today to ask for Your power exhibited in my life. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

More Than Coping

TODAY’S VERSE
“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.”
II Thessalonians 2:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So many times I feel a deep need in my heart. It may be a tugging, or an anxiousness. Perhaps a tightness in my neck and shallow breathing. I may give out a deep sigh. If I stop to reflect, I may be able to get in touch with the thoughts and feelings going on. If I did, I may be able to apply today’s verse to my situation. But instead of comfort from God, I choose to cope or escape into other things. Isn’t this at the root of lust, cravings, our drive for success and other addictions? Isn’t this why we tend to procrastinate, over compensate, or just vegetate? We want comfort. We want to know that we are okay, loved and will never be abandoned. We want that primal feeling that all is well and people are happy to be with me. And so we search, seek and try to find comfort in all the wrong places. But praise God, Paul gives us hope. He prays, what I want to pray over you and myself, “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.” Today may you receive His wonderful comfort and strength deep into your inner being.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I cannot find real comfort on my own. I cannot find the strength I need in myself or the other substitutes I use. I need You. I need Your comfort and strength. Come, oh Lord, and comfort my soul. Make me conscious of Your presence. Fill me with Your strength. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Trust In His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Let all who fear the LORD repeat: ‘His faithful love endures forever.’ In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and set me free. The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Yes, the LORD is for me; he will help me.”
Psalms 118:4-7

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a marvelous passage. Our faith is in a God who knows. Our faith is in a God who is able. Our faith is in a God who cares. Our faith is in a God whose love endures forever! A tragic situation faced our family. My middle son was in critical condition after being hit by a car. My youngest son was shook to the core and that night before he went to sleep asked me to pray with him. I prayed with all my heart. Afterward, as I was leaving he asked me, “That won’t really make a difference, will it?” I know he believed but he was as fearful as I was. I looked at him and said, “Yes, I believe it makes a difference. I always pray for God’s power. I ask for His power, but I trust in His love.” Like the Psalmist we too can pray in our distress and the Lord, He will answer. The Lord is for you, you can trust in His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I don’t know everything that is going on. I can’t see the future. I know I often waiver in my faith. But Lord, I know in my distress, I can call upon You. Help me with those special burdens I am carrying. Most of all, help me today to really trust in Your love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Worthy Of His Call

TODAY’S VERSE
“So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do.”
II Thessalonians 1:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
This is one of those passages that really help you focus in on what’s important. What is my purpose? Why was I born? What possible significance can my life be? All these are answered in this short passage. Here we see a prayer we can pray for our life. “Oh Almighty, loving God, please enable me to live a life worthy of Your call.” And He has already equipped us to do this. In another passage Paul tells us that the fruit, or the result of living in the power of the Holy Spirit, is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Can you imagine the life we would live today, if we would ask God to produce that fruit in our life? This would be worthy of His calling on our life. And God would give us power to do all that our faith prompts us to do. Paul then assures us that the result of living this way is that the name of Jesus will be honored. And how do we know this can happen? How can we possibly think that this passage is meant for us? Paul concludes this passage with this assurance, “This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.” It is His grace. It is His love and desire for you to live a life worthy of His call.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to be filled with Your Holy Spirit, to bear the fruit of Your Spirit in my life. Help me live this day worthy of Your call. Thank You for Your grace and may Your power accomplish all the good things that You prompt in my heart through faith.
AMEN

Speak To Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. – Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.”
Psalms 119: 11, 18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God has created us in such a marvelous way. He has given us the ability to use sounds and letters combined in ways that can be understood by a community of people. And not just verbal communication; we can use the written word to learn by as well. God created and uses this marvelous, complex language to communicate to us both emotionally and rationally. Paul wrote to Timothy that “all scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Today, might we take the time to hear from God in ways that bring deep joy and meaning to our life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for the gift of language. Speak to my heart. Let me hear Your voice so I can live for You.
AMEN
