Live Like Jesus

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”
Philippians 2:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The world is looking for Jesus. People love what Jesus stood for and how He lived His life. It is the way we live that turns off the world toward Christianity, not Jesus. Paul knew this. It was the love and grace of Jesus that consumed him. And he knew if we were going to make any impact in the world at all, if anyone around us was going to come to Jesus, then it would have to be through an accurate portrayal of the person we name our self after. If we are Christians, then Paul says that we “must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” And what was this attitude? It was an attitude of love and selflessness. Paul said it this way, “Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”  Today, let us humble ourself and live as Jesus would. Might He live in and through us so much that people would have to take a second look, mistaking our love for the Lord Himself.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me to live the way You would. Help me have the same attitude that You do. Help me live for You so much that those around me will be compelled to know You as I do.
AMEN

Friendship

TODAY’S VERSE
“There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.”
Proverbs 18:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The more I study the scriptures, the more I study human behavior, the more I am convinced that we need healthy relationships. Our brains, our capacity for joy, our spirituality all function best when we are in healthy authentic relationships with God and others. Have you ever noticed the difference you experience when some one graces you with a social smile compared to someone who looks you in the eyes and communicates a real empathy? Friendship is real. With friendship, we can be real. Jesus said to His disciples, “I have called you friends.” He wants to be the same with you! Today, focus on being a friend with God and others. Be real, be authentic, build trust and empathy. True joy comes with relationships.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to build true friendships with You and others. Give me the love, courage and strength to do this, I pray.
AMEN

Praise God

TODAY’S VERSE
“Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise His Holy name.”
Psalms 103:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
It is easy to live day by day and never really take the time to praise God. Part of this is due to the fact that we have relegated worship and praise to one hour a week. We have segmented our lives with spirituality being only a small part. When we do praise it is often with just an intellectual assent. It is not wholeheartedly. This is not the way God intended our worship to be. Instead, God wants us to praise Him with everything that is inside us. David wrote, “Let ALL that I am praise the Lord!” This includes our emotion, knowledge and personality. He wants us to praise Him with our “whole” heart. It is not a “half hearted” affair. God wants our all. Everything we are and hope to be. Today, praise God for all that He is. Praise Him for what He has done. Praise Him with everything you have, praise Him with your whole heart. Truly God is worthy!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come now to praise Your Holy name. I praise You for all that You are. I praise You from my whole heart. I sincerely love You and praise You with everything inside me. Praise You Lord!
AMEN

Rest In Him

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”’
Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
How many times have we qualified for this passage of scripture? Difficulties in life can get us all down. Relationships, finances, worries about the future, guilt over the past. There are so many contributors to the stress we find ourselves under. Jesus knew what it was to be under duress. He felt the fatigue from endless ministry. He grew exasperated over the religious controversy surrounding His ministry. And yet with all the pressures and temptations He was under the Bible made it clear that He did not sin. Who better to come to for rest when we are weary? Today Jesus offers you relief. He knows you are weary and often carry heavy burdens. He says, “Come and I will give you rest.” Rest in Him today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know how often I am weary and heavy burdened. You know I need rest. You promised if I came to You that You would give me the rest I need. I come Lord Jesus, I come to You with all my burdens. Please give me rest to my soul.
AMEN

Pursuing Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life.”
Psalms 23:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Psalms 23 is perhaps the most popular passage in the Bible. Parts like, “Though I walk through the shadow of death I will fear no evil” make it a favorite at funerals. At the end of the chapter there is a glorious verse. Usually it reads, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” It sounds so poetic but do we really understand the meaning? Today’s passage says it in a slightly different way, a way that really brings out the true meaning. It reads, “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life.” See the difference? It is not some passive “following”. It is not a result of any good we have done. Instead, it says that God “pursues” us with His unfailing love and goodness. Not just temporarily, but all the days of our lives! He pursues you. If you ignore Him, He pursues, if you take Him for granted, He pursues, even if you turn your back on Him, His unfailing love and goodness pursues you. Today, live in the joy that God is pursuing you with His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Oh Father, thank You for Your pursuing me with Your unfailing love and goodness. Today, help me live in the joy of that reality.
AMEN

His Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
“You have endowed him with eternal blessings and given him the joy of your presence.”
Psalms 21:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Here we see King David writing a psalm about God’s blessing in his life. David felt blessed because God gave him the joy of being in His presence. Joy comes from deep bonded relationships, especially with God. That is why we were created. God desires our fellowship. He has endowed each of us with eternal blessings that come from the joy of His presence. But do we even pay attention to God? Much like a marriage, you can choose to enjoy each other’s company or you can keep busy ignoring each other’s companionship and wonder years later why the love is gone. Today, choose to be conscious of the presence of God. Choose to stop and meditate on who He is and the infinite love He has for you. When you do, you will find true joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, make me conscious of Your presence. Help me to experience today the deep joy of knowing You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and fill my heart with Your love.
AMEN

Praise God

TODAY’S VERSE
“Praise the LORD! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us celebrate, let us rejoice, let us give him the glory!”
Revelation 19:6-7 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
How excited are you about knowing God? You would think we would be ecstatic, but instead our joy is minimal. I have seen sports fan get more excited about their teams wining a championship than most churches do during worship. This is because in reality most of us only know about God. Sure, we have asked Him to be our Savior, but we haven’t taken the time to really know Him. We know nothing of His power, wisdom or glory. How then can we say with John, “The Lord our God, the Almighty reigns”? If we are going to celebrate God, if we are going to rejoice because of Him, then we need to know God in a deep and personal way. This will only happen if we spend time in His presence. In His presence He will reveal Himself to us. In His presence we will learn of His power, wisdom and His glory. In His presence we will learn to praise, celebrate and rejoice in Him. So today stop everything. Stop and for one moment enter His presence and consider who He is. Sense that He is the Almighty one. Feel how worthy He is of all our praise. For just a moment consider how great He is and then know this; He loves you! The Almighty One loves you, so go ahead, celebrate, rejoice and give Him the glory!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for not appreciating You enough. You are the Almighty One and You reign on high. I rejoice that I know You and come to You with joy and celebration. You are worthy of all my praise and I give You all the glory.
AMEN

Grace, Truth and Time

TODAY’S  VERSE
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Jesus came to earth to be our Savior. He came to give us an abundant life. The way He does this is through the very expression of who He is. We see this in today’s passage. Jesus, or as John calls Him, the Word, came from the Father, took on a human form and was full of grace and truth. It is grace that saves us. Grace that sustains us. God’s grace that forgives us. But it is His truth that corrects us, directs us and as Jesus said, “Sets us free.” Dr. Henry Cloud talks about this in his book, “Changes That Heal.” He claims that it is the combination of God’s grace and truth that gives us the balance we need to live an emotionally healthy life. Grace without truth would never lead to true change. Truth without grace would never allow us the space we need to fail and start over. We need both. Dr. Cloud adds one more ingredient. He adds time. How wise. When we take the grace of God to forgive, the truth of God to guide and we add time, true maturity results. Today may we rejoice in God’s wonderful plan for our spiritual growth.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I thank You for Your wonderful amazing grace that loves me unconditionally. Thank You for Your truth that has as its aim, my maturity. And Father, thank You for the time and patience that You have given me in order that I may mature in You.
AMEN

Filled With His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”
Romans 5:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
It’s possible to have someone love you and not be able to comprehend it. I know. For whatever reason, I was able to love others, tell others about God’s love, but when it came to really feeling that same love, I experienced a major block. A sense of shame, false guilt and emptiness would come over me if I was forced to acknowledge that anyone loved me. I could hear the words “I love you”, but could never get the emotions through my defenses. It was after this awareness that the grace of God and the ministry of the Holy Spirit gently brought me to the place where I could experience God’s unconditional love. But it was not easy. How about you? Do you know that God loves you? If so, do you know it in a deep and personally felt way? Has the Holy Spirit filled your heart with His love? If not, do not despair; talk to God about it. Ask the Holy Spirit to work in your heart and make you more and more aware of the unconditional love that God has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know You love me, but today I want to know with my heart. I need Your Holy Spirit to minister to me in ways that help me understand deep in my soul that I am loved. I give You my heart; fill it with Your love. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Joy and Quiet

TODAY’S VERSE
“My heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. – You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.”
Psalms 16:9, 11 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
We were made for rhythms of joy and quiet. David is a perfect example. His heart was full of joy and peaceful rest. But what was his secret? Was it his circumstances? Was it his wealth? Was it the adoration of thousands of followers? No, David’s joy and peace came from his enjoying God’s presence. It was in God’s presence that he felt a love and grace that overwhelmed him with joy and reverent rest. It was this pleasure of living in God’s presence that allowed for David’s rhythm of joy and rest. You can experience the same. Today, spend time in God’s presence. Meditate on His love for you. Let His presence bring you the same joy and quiet that it gave David.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You now. I want to experience the joy and peace of Your presence.
AMEN
