Praise God

TODAY’S VERSE
Praise the LORD! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us celebrate, let us rejoice, let us give him the glory!
Revelation 19:6-7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How excited are you about knowing God? You would think we would be ecstatic, but instead our joy is minimal. I have seen sports fan get more excited about their teams wining a championship than most churches do during worship. This is because in reality most of us only know about God. Sure, we have asked Him to be our Savior, but we haven’t taken the time to really know Him. We know nothing of His power, wisdom or glory. How then can we say with John, “The Lord our God, the Almighty reigns”? If we are going to celebrate God, if we are going to rejoice because of Him, then we need to know God in a deep and personal way. This will only happen if we spend time in His presence. In His presence He will reveal Himself to us. In His presence we will learn of His power, wisdom and His glory. In His presence we will learn to praise, celebrate and rejoice in Him. So today stop everything. Stop and for one moment become conscious of His presence and consider who He is. Sense that He is the Almighty one. Feel how worthy He is of all our praise. For just a moment consider how great He is and then know this; He loves you! The Almighty One loves you, so go ahead, celebrate, rejoice and give Him the glory!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for not appreciating You enough. You are the Almighty One and You reign on high. I rejoice that I know You and come to You with joy and celebration. You are worthy of all my praise and I give You all the glory.

True Light

TODAY’S VERSE
“If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God. But watch out, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves by your own fires. This is the reward you will receive from me: You will soon fall down in great torment.”
Isaiah 50:10-11 (NLT)

“Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
II Corinthians 11:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When we are in the dark, we tend to think that any light will do. But that is not true. I started one night on a four hour hike into a deep forest along a mountain trail. I had no choice, I had to go. But to my dismay, all I had was a flashlight with poor batteries. As the light failed, the walk ended up more like eight hours. You can’t tell me that the kind of light you have doesn’t make a difference. It was the hardest trek of my life because the light I had was no good.  The prophet Isaiah is warning us that when it gets dark, we need trust in God, not our own light. How often can we become deceived by good sounding logic? Paul warns us that Satan comes to us masquerading as an angel of light! Today there are all kinds of self-help messages. While a lot of what is said is good, nothing can replace the light of God, His word and His presence. Spend time with Him. Use His light. Nothing else will light up your path like the light of Jesus and his word. 

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, You said that You are the light of the world.  Please come today and direct my path. Show me the way. Keep me from falling prey to a deceiving light and false direction. I commit myself and my journey to You.

Being Real

TODAY’S VERSE
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
I John 1:8-9

TODAY’S THOUGHT 
Why would John write, “If we claim we have no sin”? Who would ever claim that? Who in their right mind would think that they do not sin? The truth is that those of us in the church are close to doing that very thing. We come to a point where we feel we need to live a certain way in order to be a follower of Christ. Now while there is virtue in trying to live a righteous life, we will never be sinless. So there becomes a temptation to try and hide any “sins” that we may have. There seems to be fear of humiliation or a shame that comes with “falling from Grace.” This makes it hard for Christians to be honest and open with each other. Perhaps John’s message today would be something like, “There are no perfect people in the church, so don’t pretend you are without sin. Go ahead and confess to God and each other. Christ is faithful to forgive you.” In order to be real, we need to come to God and confess our sins, admit our needs and get the help we need. It is in sharing our struggles and helping each other that we experience true Christianity. Then we help others in the way we were helped. This is what people are looking for. They will think, “Finally, someone who is real! Someone who knows what I am going through and can help me.” The sooner the community knows that there are no perfect people allowed at church, the sooner they will feel comfortable enough to come. They, too, can experience the same grace, love and forgiveness that we feel.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my situation. You know my shortcomings. Help me keep it real with You. Help me confess my sins so that I might experience Your freedom and forgiveness. And then, Father, help me help others, in the same way You have helped me. Bring revival, Lord, to my church. Help us embrace our shortcomings, confess them one to another and accept Your forgiveness. Might we be a witness of Your grace throughout our community and to all who enter our doors. In Jesus’ name.

Thinking Right

TODAY’S VERSE
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You have heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” I think in reality, “We are what we think.” Thoughts, whether conscious or on a more hidden level, affect the way we feel, perceive reality, act or react. Thoughts help create our moods, attitudes and beliefs. Anger, jealously, pride, envy, sadness, rebellion – these and many other negative emotions or behaviors have their root in the way we think. That is why it is so important to be aware and take responsibility for our thoughts. Paul instructs us to consider that our mind is in a spiritual war. Because of that we are to demolish any rouge thoughts that set itself up against Godly thinking. We are to take our thoughts captive and put it through a Godly filter so it becomes the way He would have us think. Paul also gives us a list of the kinds of thoughts we should dwell on. We should dwell on thoughts that are noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. We have a choice; we can rule our thoughts or we can let them rule us. Today, let Jesus be the Lord of your thought life. Let Him help you with the way you think.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I bring you my mind and my sub-conscious mind. Help me bring all my thoughts into the light of Your Holy Spirit. Today, dear Lord, help me dwell on thoughts that are noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy.  In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Light and Truth

TODAY’S VERSE
“Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me.”
Psalms 43:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What if you were in total darkness? How precious would the light be? What if everything you heard was lies and deception? How welcomed would the truth be? We need God’s guidance. We need Him to help us make it through the maze of life we find ourselves in. The great news is that God wants to guide us. He wants to give us light for our path and truth as our navigator. All we have to do is receive it. Today, come to God. Spend time with Him. Ask Him to shine His light into your darkness. Ask Him to give you His truth about all that you are worried and stressed about. He loves you. He will guide you, He will lead you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that You will shine Your light into all the dark areas of my life. Help me see. Give me Your truth to correct my misunderstandings. Lead me in the right direction, I pray.

Slow To Speak

TODAY’S VERSE
“Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.”
Psalms 15:1-3

“If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.”
James 1:26

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Lord puts a premium on what we say. James warns us, “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” David makes a list of the qualities of a holy life and includes speaking the truth, refusing gossip and not speaking evil of others. It is so easy to let what we say get out of hand. We say Jesus is the “Lord of our life.” Jesus would ask, “Am I the Lord of your tongue?” Today, give God control of your words. Make a conscious effort to weigh what you say in order to honor Him. James said it best when he wrote “be quick to listen and slow to speak.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I give You control of my tongue. Please help me guard my mouth today. Help me be quick to listen to others and slow to speak. Help me weigh carefully everything I say that I may be a testimony of Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Light Or Darkness?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!”
Matthew 6:22-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I have studied psychology all my life and I have never heard a truer statement than what Jesus said in this passage. How deceived we can become. We look at what we think is reality and all the time we have filters that we are looking through. Anger, sadness, jealousy, fear, abandonment, hurt and a hundred other emotions, attitudes, perceptions and impressions skew our view of what is true. We think we are seeing in the light and all the time it is darkness. And Jesus warned us, “If the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!” That is why He gave us the Holy Spirit and His word. The Holy Spirit is our teacher and guide, showing us the way. The word of God is our filter in which to see the world. Together they keep us in the light. Today, come to God. Ask Him to help you see the truth of your own situation. Ask Him to be your guide so that you will know which way to go. May His light penetrate your darkness and set you free.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I need You. I need Your light to penetrate my darkness. Guide me, lead me, show me the way to go, I pray. In Jesus’ name.

Promises

TODAY’S VERSE
“Stay here for now, and may the LORD help you keep your promise.”
I Samuel 1:23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We live in a world that doesn’t honor its word. This is especially true of a promise that was made with the wrong motives; a promise that is more like “let’s make a deal” than it is a serious commitment. We either want something and will manipulate with a promise in order to get it; or we try to avoid certain consequences and use promises as currency to buy our way out of trouble. But this is not the way Jesus taught us. He said to make our “Yes” a “Yes” and our “No” a “No”. It is also easy to fail at keeping our promises when we have the best of intentions. There are so many distractions, so many important things vying for our attention that we can begin to serve the “urgent” at the expense of the promises we made. Integrity is key to the Christian life and we need to repent when we stray from keeping our word. Today, let us repent of our unkept promises and recommit ourself to follow through on what we say we will do.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me keep my word. Help my “Yes” be a “Yes” and my “No” a “No”. Might I serve You by keeping my promises.

Show Me the Right Path

TODAY’S VERSE
“Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Remember, O LORD, your compassion and unfailing love.”
Psalms 25:4-6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life is a journey. We are not settlers in this world. Heaven is our final destination. Instead we are called to go through life as an ambassador of heaven, a soldier in God’s army, a sojourner commanded to give away God’s peace and love. And the journey can get messy. That is why it is so important to learn to navigate, to solve problems and to discern what to do next. David is crying out that God would direct his path. But notice that it is a special kind of leading. He said, “Lead me by your truth and teach me.” Jesus said that truth would set us free. So much of our hardships, misdirection and hurts in this life are due to deception and denial. We need to pray that God would show us the truth and then teach us through each experience. This is how we derive our faith and hope in Him. They are learned behaviors that God imparts as we are led by His Spirit in each situation we find ourselves in. Life is a process. We succeed and make progress by learning. David learned to put his hope in God and trusted that God’s compassion and love would not fail. That is what we need to do. May God lead you by His truth today and point out the road for you to follow. May He teach you more about the depths of His compassion and unfailing love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your guidance today. Show me what road to follow. Guide me by Your truth and teach me to trust You. I put my hope in You and your compassionate unfailing love.

You Are His Masterpiece

TODAY’S VERSE
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
Ephesians 2:10

TODAY’S THOUGHT
For every truth there is a lie waiting to deceive us. Why is it so much easier to believe a lie? Why can doubt have so much impact on belief? A million people can believe the truth and yet one dissenter will get the nation’s attention. It is that way in the spiritual realm. Paul writes that we are significant. Specifically, “we are God’s masterpiece created to do the good things he planned for us to do” and what do we believe? Be honest, don’t we often believe we are no good, inferior, damaged goods and even hopeless? Where did that come from? It didn’t come from God! If we want to change what we believe, we must renounce the lies. Do it today. Lift up your heart and say it out loud, “I renounce the lie that I am no good, inferior, damaged goods or hopeless.” My friend, it is time to believe the truth about yourself. You are significant. You are a masterpiece made by God Himself. He absolutely loves you and desires you to accept the love He has for you. Renounce the lies; today choose to believe the truth.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, my Father. I confess I have believed lies about myself. I renounce these negative thoughts and feelings and command their power over me to be broken in the precious name of Jesus Christ! I choose to accept the truth, that you personally created me as a masterpiece to do the good things you have sent me here for. Thank you, dear Father, for giving me significance.
