Be Not Afraid

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?”
Psalms 27:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Sometimes we just need to answer the question.  The Psalmist asks, “Who should I fear?” It could be phrased, “Why should I be afraid?” It would seem that the question is rhetorical. Why with God, we should not fear anything and yet many times fear blinds our eyes to the truth around us. I remember seeing a little boy who thought he was lost. He was in a crowd and start screaming. I was only a few feet away. He cried hysterically. I was going to help but I knew that his father was standing right next to him. The little child was so overcome with fear of abandonment that he cried so hard, he could not see his father right in front of him. It wasn’t until the dad picked him up and hugged him for a few moments that the boy took comfort in his father’s arms. Fear is like that. When we fear, it blocks out all other reality. Here is God, our light and salvation, and yet we act as if we are lost in utter darkness. We are in the stronghold of God’s love and yet fear blinds us from the reality of our salvation. Is this your reality? What is it that you fear? Rebuke it right now. Look into the eyes of Jesus. Let His light penetrate your mind and heart. Let Him be your stronghold. Hear Him say, “Arise and walk in peace.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I admit that I let my emotions overwhelm me. I do not allow myself to fully understand what it means that You are my light, salvation and stronghold. Forgive me, Lord. I want Your peace. I want Your joy. I want to know You more fully. Even today let me experience Your presence in my life. I ask You to make me fully aware of Your love and power. I give myself to You, Jesus; help me not be afraid.
AMEN

What Have You Asked For?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”
John 16:24 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
I’m not sure which is sadder:  a person who never gets a chance to have what he or she desires or a person who had all the chances in the world and never took one? Here we are with a God who is all wise, all powerful and all loving. We also have Jesus Himself saying, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” And yet what do we do? What have we asked for lately? Jesus is not talking about a magic lamp that we rub three times and make wishes for our own pleasure. We aren’t to ask God for things with wrong motives. Instead, Jesus is suggesting that we have a fellowship with His Father which is so rich and deep, that we end up aligning our will with His. When we know His will, it will bring us deep joy and great pleasure to ask God for it. We will be about the business of making His will done on earth as it is in Heaven. What at home, work or in your church can you ask God for? What can you ask for your family, friends and co-workers that would be in alignment with His will? Pray that God would give you insight into His will and a Holy boldness to ask for it. When you do, Jesus said, “You will receive, and your joy will be complete.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I ask You to help me know what to pray for. Help me to know how to pray for my family, friends and co-workers. Help me pray about my relationships, career and ministry. Speak to my heart and then give me the faith to ask You . Help me not to be like the person who had so many chances in life but never took one. Help me to ask You for something special today! In Jesus’ name.

Staying On Course

TODAY’S VERSE
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
II Timothy 3:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
God has not left us alone to wander through this world as helpless victims. He has given us His word to instruct and guide us. God does not wait until we make a mistake and then discard us. He has given us His word to rebuke and correct us. God does not leave us the way we are. He has given us His word to train us. Life is like a journey. There is a trail we can follow that will get us through the wilderness. Through His word, God shows us the trail to go on. His word also lets us know when we wander from the trail. The Bible shows us how to get back on the trail again. Finally, the scriptures show us how to stay on the trail and not wander off in the first place!. Read His word. Make it a part of your daily routine. Through it, He will teach you everything you need to know about living this life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for Your word. Please help me understand what the scriptures are saying. Help me apply it to my life. Holy Spirit, use the Bible and teach me, rebuke me, correct me and train me. Help me be the person You desire me to be. In Jesus’ name.

Do You Really Know Him?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”
II Peter 1:2-3 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Do you know Christ? I don’t mean “know of Christ”, but do you know Christ to the point that knowing Him deeply influences your life? Look at today’s verses. Peter is saying that we will experience an abundant amount of grace and peace through our knowledge of Christ. He then goes on to say that our knowledge of Christ will set loose the power of God and give us everything we need for life and godliness. I love that phrase, “EVERYTHING WE NEED FOR LIFE AND GODLINESS!” Some things? Almost everything? No, everything we need for life! This is no small claim. Peter is saying that our knowledge of Christ is crucial to everything we need in life. So what does knowledge mean? Peter was using the Greek work that means a full knowledge, a deep participation by the knower in the object known so that it powerfully influences him or her. This is more than an acquaintance or a casual relationship. It is a passion to know, really know, God. It is a hunger for His word, a longing to spend time in His presence, an openness to dialog freely with Him and listen for His voice. There is so much to gain by knowing Him, really knowing Him. You can start to know Him more today. He is waiting for you to try.
 
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I confess my lack of spiritual knowledge. I have not taken the time I should to really know You. I haven’t been real with You nor have I let You be real with me. But today, I want to start. I want to know You, really know You. I want to hear Your voice. I want to sense Your presence in my life. I want Your scriptures to come alive in my mind. Father, I want to know You as Father. Help me know You.  In Jesus’ name.

Filled With God’s Knowledge

TODAY’S VERSE
“We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.”
Colossians 1:9-10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Being filled with the knowledge of God is crucial to our Christian experience. But how does this happen? How are we filled with the knowledge of God? F.B. Meyers writes, “God’s impressions within and His word without are always corroborated by His Providence around, and we should quietly wait until those three focus into one point.” We gain knowledge as we quiet ourselves to listen to God, read His word for understanding and follow His leadings as they are played out. Dallas Willard in his book Hearing God shares, “So our union with God – His presence with us, in which our aloneness is banished and the meaning and full purpose of human existence is realized – consists chiefly in a conversational relationship with God while we are each consistently and deeply engaged as His friend and co-laborer in the affairs of the kingdom of Heaven.” This is what Paul is talking about. We listen to God, muse on His word and practice His presence as we go about living for Him. When we do, He will give us wisdom and knowledge, the fruit of good works and all the strength and power we need. Does it get any better than that?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, is it true? Can I really be filled with your knowledge and wisdom? Can my life bear good works? Can I really have Your strength and power in my life? This is what I desire. Please help me, Lord, with the discipline I need to quietly spend time listening to You and reading Your word. Help me even today to converse with You throughout the day. Help me experience Your presence. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Pursue Godliness

TODAY’S VERSE
“Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.”
I Timothy 6:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you pursuing? What demands your attention and devotion? What occupies your time? What do you spend your resources on? What area of your life gets your very best? The answer to these questions speak volumes about your spirituality. Paul, speaking to Timothy, encourages him to spend his life pursuing spiritual goals. He writes that he should pursue righteousness and a Godly life. In doing that he also tells him to pursue faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Could Paul be serious? What about fame, wealth, knowledge, success, significance and security? What about a hundred other noble goals? Why think about it. If we pursued Paul’s list, what would happen? What would we end up like? I am convinced, if we focused all our intentions on the list Paul gives us, our life would be of the highest calling. We would be living life the way Jesus did. There are good pursuits but there is only one life on this earth. If we believe anything about Christianity, then let’s pursue a life like His. Today, make it a goal in everything you do to pursue righteousness, Godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me pursue You and the life You want me to live. Help me live the way Jesus did. I need Your Holy Spirit to guide me, help me and give me the strength to pursue a godly life. In Jesus’ name.

Filled With Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.”
I Timothy 1:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you filled with? There is such a danger in our society to turn our Christian experience into an intellectual experience. We fill our head with facts, rules and knowledge about God. But Paul warns that there is more than knowledge. He wrote that, “some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions.” Instead we see that the goal of Paul’s teaching was to fill us with love. A love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience and a genuine faith. How exhilarating. How challenging. A love that is pure in its motives, beliefs and trust. A love that is quick to do no wrong to others but if it does, it is just as quick to repent and keep a clear conscience. And a love that is bigger than ourself because it is inspired and energized by faith in God Himself. Today, might we know God’s word and have a grasp of solid Biblical teaching in a way that we become filled with love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know Your word and might it sink deep in my heart making it pure, in my conscience making it clear and in my faith making it genuine.

Trust In His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“Let all who fear the LORD repeat: ‘His faithful love endures forever.’ In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and set me free. The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Yes, the LORD is for me; he will help me.”
Psalms 118:4-7

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a marvelous passage. Our faith is in a God who knows. Our faith is in a God who is able. Our faith is in a God who cares. Our faith is in a God whose love endures forever! A tragic situation faced our family. My middle son was in critical condition after being hit by a car. My youngest son was shook to the core and that night before he went to sleep asked me to pray with him. I prayed with all my heart. Afterward, as I was leaving he asked me, “That won’t really make a difference, will it?” I know he believed but he was as fearful as I was. I looked at him and said, “Yes, I believe it makes a difference. I always pray for God’s power. I ask for His power, but I trust in His love.” Like the Psalmist we too can pray in our distress and the Lord, He will answer. The Lord is for you, you can trust in His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I don’t know everything that is going on. I can’t see the future. I know I often waiver in my faith. But Lord, I know in my distress, I can call upon You. Help me with those special burdens I am carrying. Most of all, help me today to really trust in Your love. In Jesus’ name.

Focus On Believing

TODAY’S VERSE
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
Ephesians 3:20-21

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Which are you? The glass is half empty or the glass is half full? When it comes to reading today’s verse, it
really makes a difference. It is easy to let our “half empty” attitude take a “glass is full and running over”
type of verse we have today and bring it right down. What do you think when you read, “Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine”? Bill Johnson in his book When Heaven Invades
Earth writes, “Faith is not the absence of doubt. It is the presence of belief.” So maybe today we shouldn’t worry about our doubts. It’s okay to have them. We all do. But for today, perhaps we should just focus on believing what God has said. He CAN do more than you and I can ever imagine.  Ask God to help you believe this today. Give Him your worries, fears and problems. Let Him control your life. He is more than able!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today, instead of trying to rid myself of doubt, I choose to believe You are able to do more than I can ever imagine. Today I choose faith. Today I choose to trust You. Today I choose Your love for me and will live in this hope, that You are alive and are able. In Jesus’ name.

Speak To Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. – Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.”
Psalms 119: 11, 18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God has created us in such a marvelous way. He has given us the ability to use sounds and letters combined in ways that can be understood by a community of people. And not just verbal communication; we can use the written word to learn by as well. God created and uses this marvelous, complex language to communicate to us both emotionally and rationally. Paul wrote to Timothy that “all scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Today, might we take the time to hear from God in ways that bring deep joy and meaning to our life.
 
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for the gift of language. Speak to my heart. Let me hear Your voice so I can live for You.
