Answered Prayer

TODAY’S VERSE
“We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.”
II Corinthians 1:11

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Prayer. How many times are we tempted to think that it doesn’t matter? How many times does it feel as if our prayers are bouncing off the ceiling, not affecting any outcome? Yet, we see in today’s verse that Paul is saying, “You are helping us by praying for us.” Now Paul knew where the real credit belonged. He confesses that his confidence is in God, who continues to rescue him; but he is quick to add that praying to God is that catalyst that causes the power of God to prevail. God designed it that way. Our almighty, all knowing, all powerful God has chosen to allow His power to be used at the point of our involvement. He chose you and I to be His co-laborers, His agents in this world, charged with the responsibility of invoking His power. After all, Jesus himself taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” Paul said, “Many people will give thanks because God answered so many prayers for our safety!” Let me ask you, “How many people will give thanks because you prayed on their behalf?” It’s not too late! Start praying today. Pray for your family, pray for your friends. Pray for those at work. Pray for your church. When you are done, pray some more. God desires our prayers. He desires to work out His will in harmony with our requests.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I feel like Your disciples who asked You to teach them to pray. I am so ignorant, so inexperienced, so naive about prayer. Holy Spirit, teach me, guide me, instruct me. Help me to know what to pray. Give me the faith to trust You. Today, embolden my heart to pray in a way that brings You glory and works on behalf of those that so desperately need Your touch. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Hope In Him

TODAY’S VERSE
“From the depths of despair, O LORD, I call for your help. Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer. – I am counting on the LORD; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.”
Psalms 130: 1,2,5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Where would we be without hope and faith? And yet faith and hope is not enough. We can have faith in the wrong thing. We can be hoping where there is no hope. But the Psalmist knew who he believed in. He knew the character and power of God, so when he was in his deepest despair, he would cry out to Him. He could count of God to hear him. He writes to Israel, “O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is unfailing love.” It was God’s unfailing love that kept him going. It got him up in the morning and allowed him to put one foot in front of the other, even when he did not know where he was going. Even in his depths of despair, God’s love sustained him. Today, bring your needs to God. Call on Him for help. Count on Him to come through. Today, put your hope in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I come and put my trust in You. I am counting on You, Lord, and Your unfailing love to sustain me. I have put my hope in You.
AMEN

Re-correct Your Course

TODAY’S VERSE
“That is why the LORD says, ‘Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.’ Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.”
Joel 2:12-13

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Attitudes and behavior. How easily they can get us off course. Left unchecked, we can find ourselves far from where we wanted to be. It is like that in sail boating. You don’t get to the other side of the lake in a straight line. Storms, waves, the wind . . .  all send you off course. Instead, you have to constantly readjust your sails, re-correct your course, in order to reach your destination. In life it is our sinful behavior and attitudes that separate us from God. It was this way in the parable of the Prodigal Son. It was the son who decided to leave home and rebel against the father. But there is hope. Jesus said that the son was at a low point, feeding the pigs and “then he came to his senses”. He thought of his father’s love and mercy and decided to go back home. God, through the prophet Joel, says that we can do the same thing. “Turn to me now,” God says, “while there is time.” Do you feel far from God today? Do you feel off course? Come to Him, come in repentance, come in true sorrow, ask for His forgiveness, ask Him to help you re-correct your course. When you do, listen to the promise Joel makes, “He is merciful and compassionate, slow to get anger and filled with unfailing love.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my attitudes and behavior. You know how I have wandered off, far from You. But today, I have come to my senses. I want back. Thank You for Your forgiveness and unfailing love toward me. Holy Spirit, help me to re-correct my course. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

He Is Listening

 TODAY’S VERSE
“I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!”
Psalms 116:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are a lot of reasons to love the Lord. But one that we often take for granted is, His listening ear. The Psalmist wrote that he loved the Lord because God heard his voice and prayer for mercy. He painted a picture of God bending down to listen, like an endearing grandfather does his grandchild. How we underestimate God’s loving attention. Studies have shown that shame in a young child is often related to the lack of response from their caregiver. The child made a bid for attention and the caregiver paid no attention. The child’s conclusion is shame, “there must be something wrong with me.” Not so with God. When He hears our voice, when He bends down to hear our very whisper, how our soul responds in love. Today, spend time with God. He longs to hear your voice.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for being there when I pray. Thanks for Your loving attention to the needs of my heart. I love you, Lord.
AMEN

Open My Eyes

TODAY’S VERSE
“And Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
II Kings 6:13-17

TODAY’S THOUGHT
This a great Biblical story. The King of Aram was at war with Israel and every time they made a military move, God told Elisha, who told the Israelites. It was so bad that the King of Aram thought he had a spy in their midst. But the officers told the King, “No, Elisha is telling the Israelites our plans.” So the King was angry and asked his armies to go get Elisha. Elisha’s servant saw the army approaching on horses and chariots, surrounding their camp and he was scared to death. But Elisha saw a heavenly reality that made all the difference in the world. He was at peace and asked God to give the servant the same perspective. The Lord opened the servant’s eyes to the heavenly reality of their situation. Can you imagine how he must have felt? It would be like a person who was raised in the deep jungle seeing America for the first time. Telephones, videos, automobiles, restaurants, airplanes. How different the two worlds are. Yet, what do we know of heaven? What do we know of God’s power available to us? What do we know of His infinite riches and power toward us who believe? It made all the difference when the servant saw the heavenly resources there on his behalf. Would it make a difference in your day today if you knew more about the Heavenly reality waiting to bust in on yours? I pray for you what Elisha prayed, “May God open your eyes so you may see.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess, I spend much of my time blind to Your presence. Blind to Your power. Blind to Your heavenly reality all around me. Help me Lord, to see all of Your vast love and resources You have available for me today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Show Me The Way

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6
My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
Proverbs 4:20-23

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Is the Bible just an ordinary book to you? Just some old religious sayings? Perhaps a few good stories, but really nothing to take too seriously? If so, let me challenge you to reconsider your view. You see, there is a wisdom that only comes from God and it comes from reading, meditating and committing yourself to what it says. This wisdom is the secret to life! Today, heed what Solomon is saying when he writes, “Trust in God, don’t lean on our own understanding. Pay attention to what His word says, listen closely, let it penetrate deep into your being,” If you do this God will bless you. God will direct your way. His word will give you life and healing. Your reading and understanding will help you guard your heart and determine the course of your life. Start today, make a commitment to read and study God’s word, the Bible.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my life, my situation and circumstances. You know my emotions and my thoughts. I need You. I need Your wisdom. I need Your understanding in order to make it through the day. Help me guard my heart by reading Your word. Let Your words that I read sink down deep into my soul and guide me, protect me and give me direction. Show me the way I should go, even today, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Choices

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:4-6
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”
Hebrews 1:1

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are many choices to make in life. How are we to integrate our faith into making major life decisions? First, we see in this passage, that we are to “trust in the Lord with all our heart.” This is more than head knowledge, it is experiential knowledge. This “knowing” has gone past our brain into our experience so that it finally resides in our inner being. It is not a “blind faith,” it is what the author of Hebrews calls “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” It is out of our relationship with God that we “seek His will in all we do” and God is faithful to lead us and show us which path to take.  What is it that you need help with? What is it that you need to decide? Seek God’s help today. Pray over the issue at hand. Seek counsel, apply wisdom, pray much and then allow Him to guide you. Let Him work in your heart and mind. He promises He will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, some decisions are so hard. I find myself so many times baffled at what to do. Situations where I have dug myself into a hole, consequences of other people’s sins, circumstances beyond my control – all of these have often left me rocking. Father, help me trust in You with all my heart today. Increase my faith. Impart Your wisdom to me and lead me in the way I should go. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

To Do Today

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
I Thessalonians 5:16-18

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Not sure what to do today? Don’t know which direction to go in or where to start? In today’s passage Paul has given us a tremendous “to do” list. In fact, he is emphatic about our doing it. He uses the words “always”, “continually” and “in all circumstances.” Look at what he says we should do. “Be joyful always!” We think of joy as an emotion but, in fact, many times joy is an act of the will. We can choose to see the glass half full, the trip almost finished, hope right around the corner. We can choose hope and experience the presence of Christ in our life which will result in joy!  Paul then says, “Pray continually.” Prayer is more than an occasional ritual. It is the communication that comes out of a vibrant, authentic relationship. It is a conversation with the living God that goes on all day. God really is with us and we talk to Him continually. Finally Paul writes, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Giving thanks is that expression of gratitude we give to God when we decide to give Him the glory for the good around us and trust Him with the bad. When things go right, we praise Him and when we are not sure about our circumstances and are upset, it is the voice of reason that says, “I thank you, God, that you are trustworthy.” Today add to your list of these important  things to do: be joyful always, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, above all else today, I choose to be joyful. I also commit myself to pray throughout the day as things come to my mind. And Father, today I will deliberately be conscious of giving You thanks in all my circumstances. Help me to this end. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Anxiety Or Peace?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:7
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Isaiah 26:3

TODAY’S THOUGHT
As hard as we try, we can’t control everything. Circumstances happen, situations arise, consequences catch up with us. Anxiety or peace? Because of God, we do have a choice. God makes all the difference in the world! Peter tells us to cast all our cares on God. I love the imagery. You throw something light — you cast something heavy. We are to take our heavy load of worry and anxiety, use all our strength and faith and cast it onto Jesus. Let Him take it. Why? Because He cares for us. Why? Because He is able to keep us in perfect peace. Isaiah shared the secret to peace. He said to fix our thoughts on God and trust Him. What is it that you are worried about today? Cast it onto Jesus. Trust Him with it. Fix your thoughts on His love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You that I can cast all my cares on You. I thank You that You care for me and that You are able to keep me in perfect peace. Take my situation; I trust You with it. I choose to take my focus off my worries and fears and put it on You and Your love. Give me Your peace today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

The Battle Is In The Mind

TODAY’S VERSE
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Philippians 4:8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When it comes to the many struggles in life, the real battle is often in the mind. James writes, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (James 4:1) That is why Paul tells us to demolish those thoughts that stand against what God wants for us. We are in a spiritual battle and need to take every stray thought captive and repent; correct it the way God would have us correct it. If I am hating someone, I need to capture the hateful thoughts, realize that they are wrong, ask forgiveness and choose not to hate. Paul also gives us a second way to win the victory in the battle for our mind. He says that we need to discipline our thinking so it focuses on thoughts that are worthy of praising God for. Those thoughts that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable and excellent. Anger, bitterness, hate, jealously, fear, anxiety – these negative emotions can literally kill us. They are joy robbers. They suck the life right out of us. Greed, selfishness, pride, and thoughts that are worldly keep us from living for God. The good news is that God has not left you powerless. You have a choice. Take responsibility for your thought life. Capture the negative thoughts and focus on the good ones. Today, choose your thoughts wisely.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, so much goes on in my head. Help me today, dear Jesus, to bring every thought captive and realign them to where they are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable and excellent. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
