Harvest Of Joy

TODAY’S VERSE
Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.
Psalms 126:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Having hope doesn’t mean we don’t feel emotion. It doesn’t mean things are going to follow our timetable. Life is hard. Bad things happen, but God is still on His throne. I can’t imagine how it must have been to be a Jew when Jerusalem fell to its enemies. To be taken captive and become a slave in a foreign land would be overwhelming. Generations would come and go and yet no answer from God. Finally, the city was rebuilt and the Jews began to return to their city once again. The Psalmist wrote, “When the LORD brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream! We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy.” Their hope that was planted with tears, returned in a glorious harvest of joy. I know it can seem hard to believe when everything around us seems to be in ruins, that we would ever have joy again. But the mystery is this. As we plant seeds of hope, of faith, of perseverance, even if our circumstances don’t change, we do. God promises we will produce a harvest of joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for all the seeds of hope You have helped me plant. I know there will a harvest with shouts of joy. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Seek Him

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you.” declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 29:12-14

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a mystery to knowing God. His love draws us to Him. God has made it abundantly clear that “whosoever will” may come to Him; but this is the beginning, not the end. If we are to follow Him, be His disciple, take knowing Him seriously, then He demands preeminence in our life. Solomon knew this. He prayed for Godly wisdom. He sought it more than anything else God could offer him and God gave it to him. He writes that it is the same for us. We must want to know God more than anything else. We need to “call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding”. He assures us that knowing God will come when we look for Him like we would look for silver and search for Him like we would search for hidden treasure. Jeremiah says it another way. He says that we will find God when we seek Him with all our heart. How much have you wanted to know God? What treasure are you seeking? What has your heart sought after? If God is going to be a serious part of your life, if you are going to live in His wisdom, then you must make knowing Him a priority. God didn’t say we had to be smart, wise, rich, talented or gifted to know Him. The only requirement is desire. Turn your desire toward God. When you do, He promises, “I will be found by you.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I admit I have let my desire wander. I have sought for fools’ gold. I have put other priorities ahead of knowing You. I come today and seek You with all my heart. Father, I yearn for Your wisdom. I desire to have understanding. I want to know You more than anything else. Teach me, guide me, lead me. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

His Perfect Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do you think about? Where do you fix your thoughts? God expects us to consider what we think and judge it according to His word. Trouble comes into our life and we begin to fear. When it does, we have a choice to make. Will we remain in fear? Will we let it escalate into panic? Or will we obey today’s passage and trust in God, fixing our thoughts on Him? When we do, He promises us peace. Not just any peace, His perfect peace. It is the same way with anger, jealously, doubt and a hundred other thoughts that come into our life every day. Today, when negative thoughts come to your mind, begin a new habit. Trade them in for peace. How? By giving the thoughts to God and then choose to trust in Him by fixing your thoughts on His love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father, help me trade my negative thinking for Your perfect peace. Today, help me to fix all my thoughts on You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
Luke 24:32 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who do you read scriptures with? Who explains the truths to your inner most being? These men had read the scriptures before. They knew of the Messiah but when Jesus shared with them, when He shared the truths of the word and how it applied to God’s great plan, their hearts burned within them. Isn’t that what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote, “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand.” God wants more for us than Bible knowledge. He desires understanding. He wants to spend time with you, through the power of the Holy Spirit, and enlighten you. Today, I pray that you will spend time with Jesus. Ask Him to warm and enlighten your heart with understanding.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I come to You today for I am thirsty. I am hungry for understanding. I need Your instruction, Your enlightenment, Your truth to invade my heart and make me more like You. Help me as I meet with You.
AMEN

Sin

TODAY’S VERSE
Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
Romans 1:29-30 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I read today’s verse and I think, “Lord be merciful to me a sinner.” Just when we think there is a pecking order of sins and ours isn’t that bad Paul comes along and shows us how bad we need Jesus. Just when our self-righteous mask starts to feel comfortable, Paul helps us peel it off. We are human. We sin. But God saves. He forgives. He fills us with the Spirit and helps us live the way He wants us to. Today, look in the mirror of today’s verse. Confess any sin and accept God’s forgiveness and grace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, be merciful to me. Forgive me for all my wrongdoing. Help me, through Your love and grace, live for You.
AMEN

Kindness

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you?
Romans 2:4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can you imagine if God dealt with us according to our behavior? Who would stand a chance? And yet so many use the wrath of God to motivate us into submission and obedience. Fear works but it doesn’t produce the kind of response God is looking for. He created us to be objects of His love and grace. So Paul asks a very specific question. He asks, “Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you?” He was disturbed wondering, how could anyone know the mercy and grace of God and not be motivated to live for God? Paul continues with another question, “Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” It is His grace, His kindness, His tolerance and patience that motivates us to turn from our sin and follow Him. Today, take time to notice. Take time to consider how kind and patient God has been toward you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, forgive me for not focusing on how kind, tolerant and patient You have been with me. Help me Lord to understand Your great kindness toward me so I will turn from my sin and follow You.
AMEN

What Are You Living For?

TODAY’S VERSE
Let me live so I can praise you.
Psalms 119:175 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you living for? If someone asked you that question what would your answer be? There are numerous answers, some better than others. Many people are driven to success and materialism. Others are looking for more simplicity. Some look for spirituality, while others live for various causes. Paul wrote that for him to live was all about Christ. Christ was everything to him. The Psalmist wrote that he wanted to live so he could praise God. There are many things that we can live for. Many of them are good, however it is not always a matter of either or. It is more about what Paul wrote to the church. He said, “That in everything he might be preeminent.” Today, consider why you are living and decide to make praising God and having Him first in your life a priority.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, let me live so I can praise You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Speak Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
I Samuel 3:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever put yourself in Samuel’s position? Have you been at a place where you really desire to hear a word from God? God loves you and wants to communicate with you. He speaks through His word, the Bible. He also speaks to your heart through the Holy Spirit. Dallas Willard in his book Hearing God concludes, “Direction will always be made available to the mature disciple if without it serious harm would befall people concerned in the matter or the cause of Christ. If I am right, the obedient, listening heart, mature in the things of God, will in such a case find the voice plain and the message clear, as with the experiences of the friends of God recorded in the Bible. This is a claim that must be tested by experience, and anyone willing to meet the conditions and learn from failures as well as successes can put it to the test.” Today, open your heart to hearing from God. Commit yourself to spend time with God in Bible reading, meditation and prayer. Build a deep and trusting relationship with Him and ask Him to share His heart with you. Say with Samuel, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” When you come to God in this way, you will hear from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I give my heart to You and desire to know You better. I desire to hear from You. I long to discern Your direction in my life. I come and say with Samuel, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Anticipation

TODAY’S VERSE
I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love.
Psalms 119:124 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Anticipation. It makes a difference in the way we think and behave. If we anticipate rejection, ridicule and anger from someone, we might behave in a certain way. If we anticipate someone’s indifference, avoidance or abandonment, we would react differently. It begs the question, how would we behave if we anticipated God’s unfailing love to who we are and what we do? His unconditional love changes everything, but only if you believe it. Today, mediate on the fact that God wants to deal with you in His unfailing love. Let it affect the way you live.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your unfailing love for me. Help me to really understand it so I will anticipate Your loving reaction to me and live accordingly. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

That People Would Know God

TODAY’S VERSE
“O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
I Kings 18:36-37

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Elijah challenged 450 Baal worshippers to a contest. Elijah and the Priests of Baal would put up two altars complete with offerings and whichever, Baal or Jehovah, would call down fire from Heaven onto the sacrifice was the real God. Elijah was confident that it would be Jehovah because he was doing what Jehovah commanded him to do. Today our faith in God is on trial more than ever before. God has given us commands too. Not a command to call fire down from Heaven but to live our Christian life out in front of the world. Why should we love others? Why should we care? Why should we live a life exhibiting the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Because, like Elijah, we are servants of the Most High and we are to do what He has commanded us to. God’s great compassion is exhibited through our lives. As we love others, in the name of Christ, they see the love He has for them. How can we do anything else? We who were snatched from our sinfulness, brokenness and alienation from God, how could we not love others and pray for them to know God in the same way we do? Elijah cries out to God in a broken voice and says, “Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” Do our hearts weep over those that do not know Him? Do we live our life so that others would see our life and recognize the Savior’s influence? Oh that God’s holy fire would fall from the sky today through our acts of love and kindness. Might He receive the Glory and might people turn to Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, like Elijah, I come to the altar of sacrifice. Might You use me today to love, to sacrifice, and care for those in need. Might others see my life today and come to know You, the true and living God. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
