Come Boldly To God

TODAY’S VERSE
Since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him.
Hebrews 10:21-22

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In the Old Testament, the High Priest offered sacrifices to God for the forgiveness of the sins of Israel. Each year, the High Priest would go through the ceremony, waiting upon God to see if indeed the sacrifice would be accepted. Then Jesus came. God sent His own Son, Jesus, to be the new Great High Priest. It was His blood, shed on the cross, that paid for our sins once and for all. No more annual ritual. It was finished when Christ died and rose again from the dead. Jesus opened the door for us to have a deep and personal relationship with God. In today’s passage, it says, “Since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him.” Have you ever stopped to consider what this really means? It means that you have a personal invitation from God to come right into His presence anytime that you want. Today, don’t just read His word. Don’t just pray. Today, come boldly to God’s throne and enjoy His presence. He has forgiven your sins and is waiting for you to come and know Him, fellowship with Him, worship Him, and live for Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the sacrifice of Your only son, Jesus, making it possible to forgive all my sins. Thank You for allowing me to come right into your presence. Help me, Lord, to know You better. Help me today to fully understand Your love for me. I pray this in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Tender Mercy

TODAY’S VERSE
 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
Isaiah 42:3 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How great it is that we can come before an Almighty and Holy God, totally unworthy, full of sin and rebellion, and yet experience such love, mercy, and forgiveness. David knew this. After getting a married woman pregnant and then purposely having her husband killed in battle, David realized how far he had wandered from God. He then comes to God in repentance, praying, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.” And that is precisely what he experienced. God was gracious to him. God forgave him and had mercy upon him. Isaiah knew about this kind of love as well. He paints a word picture illustrating God’s mercy toward us. He writes, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.” How gentle we would have to be, not to break a reed that was already bent? How careful would we have to be not to extinguish a smoldering wick that has already lost its flame? Isn’t it good to know that this is God’s attitude of mercy and grace toward us? Doesn’t it bring joy to your heart to know that you can take anything you have or have not done and confess it to Him and experience His tender mercy? Today, might the words of Jeremiah, in Lamentations 3:22-23, fill your heart with joy and peace. He wrote, “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to you today with all my sins and wrongdoings and give them to You. I thank You for Your tender mercy. I thank You for Your forgiveness and compassion toward me. God, I understand that it because of Your great love that I am not consumed. Truly, Your compassions never fail, they are new every morning.
AMEN

Restore me

TODAY’S VERSE
Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
Psalms 80:3 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Children of Israel had abandoned God. They turned their back on God and began to worship Idols. God was angry at their betrayal. But a few of the people cried out to God. They repented and pleaded with God for mercy. The author cries three times in this Psalm, “Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.” And God did. He has done the same for me. How often have I turned my back on God with unbelief, doubt, fear, and even apathy? How many times have I wandered far from God, pursuing other objects of affection, ignoring His love for me? And yet, God loved me when I was farthest from Him? I snarled at His hand of affection, yet He reached down to me again.  Likewise, God hears your cries. He is waiting for you to call out to Him. He loves to answer the prayer of repentance. Might your prayer be today, “Turn me again to Yourself, Oh God; make Your face shine upon me that I might be saved.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, restore my soul to You. Forgive me for the times I have wandered far from You, and have mercy upon me today. Shine Your face upon me that I might sense Your love, mercy, and forgiveness. Lead me back to You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

God’s Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven times.”
Matthew 18:21-22 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Our God is the God of second chances and more. Here is Peter coming to Jesus. He asks what he thinks is a very serious question. “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Peter was going out on a limb. Seven times is a lot of forgiveness. But Jesus responded in a way only God could. He told Peter, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven.” Forgiving someone seven times is incredible, but the grace of God is so much more than we can comprehend. Peter heard about it that day, but later he experienced it. Three times Peter denied Christ, and he was forgiven. Three times Jesus had to tell Peter to “feed my sheep” until Peter fully understood his mission. Finally, in the book of Acts, God had to show Peter three times the vision of a blanket with non-kosher food on it, while telling him to eat the food. God was patient with Peter. How has He been patient with you? What has He forgiven you of? Where has God exercised grace in your life? Today, appreciate the extraordinary grace of God in your life. Truly, He is the God of grace, a God of many chances.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for Your amazing grace. How patient You are with me. How forgiving You are. How wonderful Your love and mercy have been to me. Thank You for forgiving me more than seven times seventy.

Focus

TODAY’S VERSE
Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Hebrews 12:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How serious are you about Jesus Christ? How committed are you to living the kind of life He asks you to? It is easy to “talk” about following Jesus, but living for Him is another story. He hasn’t asked us to join a club. We were never asked just to become a “member.” Following Jesus is not a hobby or spectator sport. Instead, Christ asks us to be His disciples. We are called to be disciples with a mission to spread His word and love to everyone we can. The author of Hebrews illustrates this with the metaphor of an athlete. He writes that we must strip ourselves of those things that prevent us from running our race. And when we run, we must run with endurance. But what really makes the difference, what motivates us to keep our course, is focus. We focus on the love of Jesus. He was the one who started us on this journey, and He will see us through. In his book, “365 Days of Power” Rick Renner shares a confession of dedication. Today, make this your confession. “I declare by faith that I am more deeply in love with Jesus Christ today than at any previous moment in my life. My affection for Him is so deep that I will never turn back to the life from which I’ve been delivered. I have no relational obligations greater than the sense of obligation that I feel for Jesus Christ. He saved me, redeemed me, delivered me, and changed me—and I vow to serve Him for the rest of my life! I declare this by faith in Jesus’ name!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You have heard my confession. I thank You for the call You have on my life. Help me today to focus on You and the mission of love You have me on. Loosen everything from me that prohibits me from living the way You want me to. Help me run the race You have put me in with endurance, keeping my eyes on You.

Remember His Power

TODAY’S VERSE
They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.– They did not remember his power.
Psalms 78:42

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What is worry other than forgetting the power and promise of God? The legacy that the Jews, who fled from Egypt, left for their children is that they forgot about the power of God. All the miracles, all the provisions they had experienced, and yet they were guilty of murmuring, complaining, and idolatry. They lived as if God did not exist. Jesus came many centuries later and still found the same lack of faith. He was born amongst a people who did not know the all-powerful God. So He showed them. He taught them not to worry about their needs because God would provide for them. He taught them to seek Him first, and everything they needed would follow. Jesus lived among them for three and a half years. They saw the miracles, heard His teachings, experienced His power and yet, like the Jews in the wilderness, “They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. They did not remember his power.” What about you? When situations come today that force you to take pause, will you fear or have faith? Will you remember all that He has done, or will you worry in unbelief? Today, remember that the God of all power and provision is the same yesterday, today, and will be tomorrow.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I thank You for being the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I thank You for Your power continuing today as it has in the past. I know that You can provide, protect, and keep me from falling. In faith, I give my life to You. In Jesus’ name.

Rescue Me

TODAY’S VERSE
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate, I do.– What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Romans 7:15, 24-25 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times have we found ourselves in this dilemma? We sit in the aftermath of some mess we have just created and wonder, “How in the world did I get here?” Paul knew what it felt like to utterly fail at trying to change his behavior. Who can’t relate to this passage? At the end of the day, we all felt like the “wretched man” that Paul was writing about. In his book, “Learning To Tell Myself The Truth” Dr. William Backus explains it this way: “The sinfulness of human nature, man’s deepest spiritual disorder, involves a quarrel with God. Springing from this rift are underlying false beliefs about God and His attitude toward us (Spiritual misbeliefs), which in turn lead to untruthful thoughts, thoughts that affect our feelings and behavior and created difficulties in our relationship with others.” Out of these core misbeliefs, come all sorts of evil. But Paul doesn’t stop there. He asks, “Who will rescue me?” Then, he gives a resounding answer, “Jesus Christ our Lord.” Backus says this: “The reality of sin and its effects in our daily lives is not the final word. As Christians, we have the ultimate good news, the key to a healthier spiritual core.” Today, come to Christ for cleansing. Accept His total forgiveness. Ask Him to point out any Spiritual lies that are dragging you down. Throw off “wretched man” type thinking and accept His grace, love, and forgiveness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, You know my temptations, struggles, and failures. I confess I have believed lies about You that I need to get rid of. Help me know what they are and begin my inner cleansing. Thank You that Jesus Christ has rescued me.
AMEN

Trust And Obey

TODAY’S VERSE
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt.
James 1:5-6 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever had people you are close to making a decision, a decision about something you know a lot about, yet they never asked your opinion? Have you ever been asked your opinion and then totally ignored? Have you ever been asked to “weigh in” on a decision only to have to “buy in” to a decision you disagree with? It is hard when you are ignored or when decisions are made that you think should have been different. What about God? How does He feel about people who never ask for His opinion on anything? How about people who pray a desperate request, never really intending to listen? Or worse, what about those who ask God for wisdom and treat His answer as simply a “weigh-in,” deciding later to ask God to “buy in” to their decision contrary to what God suggested? Do you ask God for wisdom or go about your life without His opinion? If you do ask God for wisdom, do you listen to it, or are you off to something else, not really listening for an answer at all? Finally, if you ask for wisdom and hear God’s voice, do you “obey” it or “weigh” it? James tells us to ask God for wisdom and then believe God will give it to us and not doubt His answer. Today, when you need wisdom, ask God, really ask Him. Then, listen to what He says. When you hear, follow His path. It is like the old Hymn says, “Trust and obey, for there is no other way. To be happy in Jesus, just trust and obey.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know I don’t ask You for wisdom as I should. And when I asked, I often ignored you. Forgive me, Lord. I know I need Your wisdom for this life and ask that You give it to me. Then, Holy Spirit, guide, direct, and empower me to do what Your wisdom dictates. In Jesus’ Name.
AMEN

Temptation

TODAY’S VERSE
And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
James 1:13-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Temptation. Who has not felt its sting? Who has not been knocked in the gut and brought to their knees by this cancer of our soul? What keeps us in such bondage is the mistaken belief that temptations are “out there”. We see them as external enemies sneaking around, waiting to ambush us. Now, it is true that we have an enemy of our very soul, the devil, and he does seek to devour us. However, James shares that the root of our temptations comes from within us. James says that “temptations come from our desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions.” We can blame the magazine publisher or the movie producer, but it is our lust, our own unmet needs or misguided thinking that has caused us to dwell on pornography. It is our own misbeliefs and internal dialog that keep us coming back to drugs so we can self-medicate. That is why Paul makes it clear that God is the one that must help us. He writes, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” What God’s grace does not prevent, because of our humanness, God’s grace forgives. The Apostle John wrote, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Today, let Jesus untie the ropes that bind you. Like Peter, get up from the cell you are in. You are free! You have been liberated. Hear the words of Jesus, “Arise and sin no more.”  “My son, my daughter, go, your sins have been forgiven you!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear liberator of my soul, I bring you my shackles. Take them. I bring you the key to my heart, unlock it. Heal me from the inside. Defeat my misguided thoughts, cast down the enemy of my soul. I look to you, who knows me better than I know myself. By your power, in your grace, because of your mercy, free me, forgive me. In Jesus’ name, I pray.

No Shame

TODAY’S VERSE
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:1-2 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Shame and guilt have so many of us in bondage. If it is not actual shame, it is the fear of being shamed. Yet feeling shameful is not the way of life God has chosen for us. David knew this. In today’s passage, David is appealing to God to forgive him. He came to Him with complete abandonment, crying out for mercy, asking God to cleanse him from all his sins. He was counting on God’s unfailing love and compassion. Likewise, we come to God through the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, asking that all our sins be forgiven. But do we actually believe that happens? Are we honestly forgiven? We need to get to that same place of trust that David was in. We need to know and experience the freedom that comes from the forgiveness of Christ. David accepted himself as clean. Will you? Live in His forgiveness today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I refuse to believe that You are ashamed of me or that you will abandon me because of my transgressions. I confess my sin and accept the death of Christ on the Cross as the substitution for my wrongdoings. Help me, Lord, rise, not in arrogance, but humility, knowing that I am cleansed and accepted by Your unconditional love. I choose to accept myself as forgiven and not ashamed. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
