Can or Can’t?

TODAY’S VERSE
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can or can’t? They are two opposite pathways. They take you to very different places. “Can’t” takes you into the territory of doubt, despair, and eventually hopelessness. We can’t; they can’t, and soon, we believe that God can’t. Paul knew this. That is why he spent his life encouraging unbelievers to follow Christ and believers to increase their trust in Christ throughout their whole lives. And Paul was the consummate example! He trusted Christ for everything. And everything is what he expected. That is why he proclaimed, “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Today, decide to join Paul. Make your motto, “Through Christ I can.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me change my “can’t” to “can.” Help me trust in Your strength and not mine. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

He Is Our Guide

TODAY’S VERSE
I will bless the LORD who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.
Psalms 16:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Ever had a deeply complex situation way over your head, you were not sure what you were going to do, and then someone who was very familiar with your situation showed you the way out? I’ve been blessed with a few guides in my day. There is nothing worse than being in a deep forest and not knowing where you are. How thankful I was to have a guide who knew every square inch our deep terrain. Life is like that. Every day has new challenges. Just when you think you know the terrain; you turn , you turn a corner, and “bam, know where you are. Panic, frustration, doubt and fear start to set in and then you remember, “Why am I worried? The Lord is my guide!” And He is. David believed this. He knew what it was to depend on God. He knew what it was to be in circumstances where he wasn’t sure which way to turn. So, he blessed the Lord who was his guide. This same God who instructed him during the night will instruct you. Today, try it. Call out to God for wisdom, instruction, and help in all you do. He will be your guide.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father be my guide. I need Your wisdom, Your strength, Your guidance. Thank You, Lord, that You love me and long for me to come to You for help. I come now, Lord Jesus.
AMEN

Joy and Quiet

TODAY’S VERSE
My heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. – You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.
Psalms 16:9, 11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We were made for rhythms of joy and quiet. David is a perfect example. His heart was full of joy and peaceful rest. But what was his secret? Was it his circumstances? Was it his wealth? Was it the adoration of thousands of followers? No, David’s joy and peace came from enjoying God’s presence. In God’s presence, he felt a love and grace that overwhelmed him with joy and reverent rest. This pleasure of living in God’s presence allowed David a rhythm of joy and rest. You can experience the same. Today, spend time in God’s presence. Meditate on His love for you. Let His presence bring you the same joy and quiet that it gave David.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You now. I want to experience the joy and peace of Your presence.
AMEN

Approaching God

TODAY’S VERSE
Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.
Ephesians 3:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How do you approach God? It often depends on your presuppositions of who God really is. Is He some mean, unreasonable disciplinarian who is watching your every move? Is God some detached, non-involved creator who has no desire to relate to you? Perhaps your view of God is that of a Santa Claus to whom you give your wish list and hope to get nice things in return. Perhaps worse than any of these, the God you worship is unpredictable. You never know if and when God will show up and what kind of mood He will be in. What we believe about God has a lot to do with how we come to Him. In today’s passage, Paul is writing about his faith in God. He says that because of Christ, we can come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. The author of Hebrews says it best. He writes, “So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” So today, rejoice and join Paul in saying, “Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your love for me. Thank You for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which have made it possible for me to come boldly to You. So I come to You now, Lord. Fill me with Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, it’s not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me; I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can improve my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship when we should pray for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes, we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then waiting to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life-changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You honestly and openly. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.
AMEN

Who Is Your God?

TODAY’S VERSE
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
Psalms 18:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What you believe about God makes a difference. Not in God, but in the way you live. Your comprehension of God has everything to do with your faith and hope. Look at what David believed. He saw God as his rock, fortress, savior, protection, shield, power, and safety. How do you think this affected his attitude during a crisis? Time and experience had taught David well. All that he went through only made him stronger and deepened his beliefs about the God who is there. The God who cares. The God who is able. What is God to you? Is He your rock, fortress, and protection? Do you come to Him when the world gets too harsh? Is God your power? Can you trust in Him to supply all you need every day? David felt so, and so can we. Today, step out in faith. Ask God to reveal Himself to you and give you a fresh faith like David had. When you do, you will find God to be all you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please reveal Yourself to me. Help me see what David saw. Help me see You as my rock, fortress, savior, protection, shield, power, and safety. Help me step out in faith and trust You today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Light Up My Darkness

TODAY’S VERSE
You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
Psalms 18:28 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can be unpredictable and messy. Every one of us has some drama in our life. We all have a story. We would rather have control over our situation, but so often, we are left in the dark, wondering what to do. David experienced this. He had difficulties, but instead of staying in the dark, he turned to God for help. David cried out to God, and God became his light. He wrote, “You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.” Today, if things become unclear, you are bombarded with problems, or if dark clouds start to clutter up your sky, turn to God. He will light your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for being a light in my life. Whenever I have been left in the dark, Your light has been right there. Thank You for being a lamp for my path and showing me where to go. Guide me today, I pray.
AMEN

Filled With His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Romans 5:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It’s possible to have someone love you and not be able to comprehend it. I know. For whatever reason, I could love others and tell others about God’s love, but when it came to feeling that same love, I experienced a significant block. A sense of shame, false guilt, and emptiness would come over me if I were forced to acknowledge that anyone loved me. I could hear the words “I love you” but could never receive it. I could not get the emotional reality of it through my defenses. Deep in my heart, I didn’t believe I was lovable. It was after this awareness that the grace of God and the ministry of the Holy Spirit gently brought me to the place where I could experience God’s unconditional love. But it was not easy. How about you? Do you know that God loves you? Have you received it? Do you know it in a profound and personally felt way? If not, do not despair; talk to God about it. Ask the Holy Spirit to work in your heart and make you more and more aware that God has made you lovable and showered you with His unconditional love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know You love me, but today I want to know with my heart. I need Your Holy Spirit to minister to me in ways that help me understand deep in my soul that I am lovable and unconditionally loved. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

What Spirit Do You Have?

TODAY’S VERSE
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
II Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What attitude are we letting control our lives? With the rise in crime, a faltering economy, and a tight job market, it is easy to let fear, doubt, and insecurity fill our hearts. When we do, we find ourselves paralyzed, unable to live by faith, and stepping out to trust God. It was the same way in Paul’s time. There was poverty, persecution, sickness, and government unrest. It would have been easy for the churches to be gripped by fear, but Paul insisted they had another choice. Why? Because of God! God makes the difference. It is God who gives us power, love, and self-discipline. Is there any more potent combination? God gives us His power. This is an unlimited source of strength for whatever we set out to do. Then He adds to it, love. This is the most significant force in the universe. People armed with love can overcome any odds. Finally, God has given us the ability to be disciplined in doing His will. With our consistent, disciplined use of His power and love, what should we be afraid of? Today, put off any fear and timidity and let God’s power and love guide your journey.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I thank You for not giving me a spirit of fear or timidity. Instead, Lord, You have given me power, love, and self-discipline. Help me use them today.
AMEN

Living For Jesus

TODAY’S VERSE
I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their thought. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
John 17: 20-21 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
John 17 was more than a prayer Jesus prayed. It was His mission statement. His goal was to spread the thought that a loving God had salvation for all people to all ends of the earth. He knew that this would only happen if we worked together. Through an oneness of purpose and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we can spread His message to all the ends of the earth. In his book, “The Deeper Journey” M. Robert Mulholland Jr. writes, “Union with God results in our being a person through whom God’s presence touches the world with forgiving, cleansing, healing, liberating and transforming grace. – The world will not believe in Christ because of our sound theology, our correct Creed, our well-defined dogma, our rigorous religiosity. The world will believe when it sees Christlikeness manifested in our life.” Today, might we commit ourselves to being a more effective witness for Christ through our unity, faith, and love?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me live for You. Help me join other believers in a deep, loving relationship so that together, we will be a witness to Your love, grace, and truth.
AMEN
